Deranged Imposter

Rate this book
“I’m nothing but yours.”

They have an unspoken understanding. Nobody comes between them.

They’ve been together for so long, soulmates in some aspect. Best friends of fifteen years, yet some things never change.

Isabella knows the young boy she met has grown into a fine man, taking “tall, dark, and handsome” to its most literal meaning with pride. While he’s still selfish and possessive of her attention, there are moments when his devotion devours her, too.

But for Mikah, it’s complicated.

When he looks into the mirror, the man staring back isn’t him; he comes and goes like a ghost, lips always with a taunting smile as his eyes sketch distortions, framing depravity as innocence.

It stems from love and commitment to fear.

A secret won’t break them apart. No, Mikah worked too hard to become her most important person.

Suspicion, doubt, and worry will have her running back to him. He can protect her and give her everything she wants. She knows no one cares about her more than he does.

She should’ve noticed the subtle changes.

This story, it's different from all Crown's so far.
First of all, there's no age gap (though if wasn't referred in the book, personally I didn't notice because it's not the author focus), the main characters "live together" since "forever", Isabella (7 years) and Mikah (10 years old).
Isabella parents went to work for Mikah an Zico parents.
There's also Zico, Mikah identical twin.
There's no sex scenes, only in epilogue (so you if like to read hot stories, this is not), though there's tension between them through all the book.
There's also a skeleton in the closet, what happened to Zico?
And is Mikah Zico, or is he Mikah?
This is a psychological story that doesn't give us any answers, and it's mind-blowing.
I loved it!

As always, this author manages to have very dark and fascinating romances that catch and hold my attention. The entire book has a sense of foreboding, and I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop.

This is the story of Isa and Mikah. Isa is the daughter of a blue collar family that works for Mikah's family. She grew up with Mikah and his twin brother Zico, and they were inseparable until tragedy struck and a certain "incident" took Zico away at a young age. Isa and Mikah continue to be inseparable, having a codependent relationship and finding comfort with each other, while avoiding mention of Zico or that incident.

Our "hero," Mikah is completely obsessed with Isa, and has been in love with her since they were kids. Isa on the other hand, while clearly attracted to Mikah, is in complete denial and is afraid of deepening their relationship due to self esteem issues and fear of losing their friendship. Most of the book consists of Isa dancing around their unresolved sexual tension like a professional flamenco dancer 💃. The mental gymnastics Isa goes through to try to pretend Mikah "just thinks of her as a friend" would honestly be impressive if it didn't get a bit annoying by the end. All this tension and I'm here screaming at the book like:

As for our "hero," Mikah. Although he might seem like a relatively normal and romantic hero at first glance (especially compared to Ms. Crown's other "heroes" she writes about), make no mistake - this guy is coo coo and crazy toxic and possessive. Here are some gems from our hero:

Her graduation is nearing, and she’s already researching places to nurture her passion. I hate it. I want her eating out of the palm of my hand; I’ll feed her, so she won’t have to lift a finger.

The sole reason I let her go to Arkansas was for the mandatory passing grade. I made her call me day and night, no less than five texts throughout the day, and explain what progress they had accomplished.

I fail to see how anyone can get close to her with me melding myself to every patch of her skin. I’m confident I can obliterate men’s interest in her with a stern talk.

Opening the box, it reveals a dainty anklet. The chain and clasp are reinforced, so there is no worry about it being lost. The jewelry erases the confusion on her face, and she lifts her leg for me to clip it on.
Now, I can track her location down to centimeters.

... and it only goes downhill from there.

As you can probably guess based on the title of the book, there's more to the dark past relating to Mikah and his twin than Isa knows. Now here's the thing - I'd say the following are SPOILERS, except... uhh... I honestly have no idea what exactly happened, even at the end. I feel stupid not really understanding it, and wish more clarity was given at the end. Maybe Ms. Crown wanted to be vague due to fear of the big reveal being too cliche? But the obsessive reader in me NEEDS TO KNOW WHAT THE TRUTH IS. This is basically just gonna be me all week:

So basically, it's confirmed at the very end that current "Mikah" is actually the real Zico. No one could tell the two apart, except Isa noticed small hints but was in denial (such as the left-handed vs. right-handed thing). It's also implied that Zico killed the real Mikah out of jealousy so he could possess Isa all to himself. This is heavily implied from the slit throat hallucination of "Zico" in the mirror. The body was found in Zico's childhood secret hideout, which no one knew the location of except the real Zico... and yet the current Mikah magically finds this body 15 years later when he estimates it's around time for him to marry Isa. He ordered a DNA test to prove it's Zico and it comes back positive... but it was explicitly mentioned that they share the same DNA, so of course it would. After "Zico's" death, Isa noticed but repressed the memories of "Mikah" having an evil triumphant look whenever adults or family would look away. And from "Mikah's" point of view, he has no emotions over his twin dying, and only pretends that he does so he can manipulate Isa into doting on him. Dude is a psychopath that killed his twin so he wouldn't have to share Isa, and is mostly upset that Isa hasn't moved on in her grief.

Now here's where I have massive confusion: If he was the real Zico, why did he need to murder Mikah? According to his and Isa's memories, Isa clung to Zico and leaned on him for emotional support after her parent's deaths. Resulting in murderous jealousy on Mikah's part. Unless from the start they had been swapping around? So the first boy she met (love at first sight on his part) was actually Zico? Also, why did he tattoo himself after "Zico's" death to distinguish himself? I feel like there was a calculated reason for that, but it's not clear to me why. Why did he ask Isa if she ever "broke her ankles" at the very end during the big reveal? Was that just a threat about her possibly escaping, or was it a reference to some shared memory? I'm inclined to believe the former, since it was never mentioned as a past memory. Still, I wish we had clearer answers to these questions.

As for the steam, this book had some pretty hot scenes and build up. I enjoyed Mikah being a creep and stealing Isa's panties for his jerk off sessions, or mentions of him doing stuff to her in her sleep, or him having her shampoo his hair while he secretly jerks off 🥰. I just wish there were more sex scenes between them than the one scene in the epilogue!

Safety:
* Heroine is a virgin, never had a relationship or kissed anyone else.
* Hero a virgin as well - sees no point in even looking at or using anyone else if he knew since the beginning he only loved heroine.
* No OM drama - hero gets ridiculously jealous over anyone even looking at the heroine, but makes sure she never leaves his sight and stops any love rivals.
* No real OW drama - there's a girl that keeps trying to confess her love to the hero, but the hero completely ignores her and gets pissed off when the heroine helps set them up.
* HEA with a short epilogue not far into the future. Ends on the only sex scene of them finally consummating relationship.

So I enjoyed this book more than “Scary Suitor”.

It has a formula I like: obsessive male lead, and naive heroine. Heroine definitely bordered on dense and stupid at times. Safe. Both virgins. He’s been in love with her forever.

I liked the back story with the twins. Hero was always darkly jealous of his twin brother who was close to the heroine their entire childhood, and her rock during her tumultuous home life. They looked so alike, most including the heroine could never tell them apart. He felt as if his brother was ‘stealing’ her, until one day his brother goes missing. He seems to be totally unconcerned by this, and single-mindedly focused on pleasing and possessing the heroine. This is your huge clue 🤪🤌🤌🤌 I love deranged sh1t like this.

I would've give 1 star but i didn't only because it was a really good idea of plot but BADLY delivered!
i didn't DNF it only because i was curious,seeing a few reviews.

I think he is Micah. At how possessive he was and obsessed with her i'm pretty sure he would never allow her to call him with his brother name. I'm pretty sure he killed the brother when he realized he could lose her attention to him, since they had a connection first, and then he was left out because she get closer to Zeno. There is no sense for Zeno to be Micah in any way, cuz Micah was the one with dark thoughts.

Anyway, not cool not knowing for sure.

What i hated:

- We jump wight into the story, without background. Right in the middle.
-No past chapters,barely covered
-confusing as f***
-This plot it's all over the place with lose ways
-A lot of question unanswered
-No build up relationship. They are best friends, he is obsessed and in love, she denies every thought till the end...really...literally...after 91%
-It annoyed me how she didn't even care enough to think about her feelings...but i blame the author for that...this h doesn't care enough to see the truth, she doesn't care enough to talk to him and get some answers.
- a lot of chapters ended without a conclusion or what ever, a continuation in the next chapter.
-This author trows at us , some scenes, here and there....more telling than showing, if she shows at all. LOL
-nothing romantic or sexual happens in the whole book, only at the end. meaning after 95%
-no kissing, i can't count the little peck he gave her at 70% something.

Overall? i don't want to be mean but i wish a good author do a story with a plot like this with a good delivery!!! i'm so disappointed and it confirmed me once again i have to skip this author no matter what, the other book i read where the same.

I’m missing something

I really enjoy this authors writing, and she often uses antiheroes in her stories. In fact I don’t think I’ve read a story by her where is the main MC wasn’t a “bad guy.” Somehow I am able to overlook their actions because of their dedication to the h. I really enjoyed the tension in this story, with dual POV. Isa’s continued denial of what her relationship with Micha really is - not only how she feels about him but also how much dancing she does around his obvious obsession with her. In the end they both seemed to have the same level of intensity towards each other.

HOWEVER, I really need the ending explained to me.
Did Micha end his brother?
Is Micha actually Zico?
What’s with the broken ankle question? I know she fell before in high school and Micha saw and helped her…then she fell again but what’s with asking the question? And why was it framed so ominously?
Did both brothers somehow inhabit the same body after one passed - implying some sort of twin magic or haunting? Is that why Micha can be ambidextrous at times and switch his wristwatch randomly?
Why did we hear about Zico seeming to have an athletes future and we never hear from Micha how he plays sports still yet a few students remark on his excellent skills and that creepy guy from the coffee shop talking about wasted talent?.
Ahhhh! What is happening??

Childhood friends to lovers in dark romance setting plus suspenseful theme going on.. I should’ve DEVOURED this but I ended up getting confused AF at the end…..

Some parts were all over the places. This book was rather short so that didn’t help either.

SPOILERS: apparently I’m not the confused one here either because after reading some reviews, others were as baffled as I was. At first I thought this was some sort of split personality case but it wasn't. Then at the end I’m not even sure if it’s Zico or Mikah that’s still alive. I’m leaning more towards Mikah because he had that psychopath tendencies in him and he’d totally harm his twin brother because he’s not going to share Isa and his obsession with her became more apparent when she grew closer with Zico

LOVED that they were each other’s firsts. The obsession matches the plot then. I wish there was more clarity on the twin’s disappearance. Enjoyed it despite only one sex scene.
Def the first best friend book I read that did Justice to toxic attachment. Nobody was sleeping with op while being obsessed with their best friend. They both stayed true. Too much flowery language added at each individual’s musings. The story sort of Gets lost while reading long proses but overall great

1.5 stars.

good plot, bad delivery.

• the story starts in the middle, basically. we didn't know anything about the history of the characters for most of the book, we only got some info at like ~70% or smth. in this type of plot the whole book falls flat because we don't know how to feel about the characters.

• boring 🙈 it all went by SO slowly. i was waiting for the hero to make a move or do Something, but it was the same again and again for the whole book. there's a tiny tiny kiss at 70% and the first time they have sex is in the epilogue!! weird choice.

• the writing was waaay too flowery and overdone. so many adjectives and poetic sentences, it was such an overkill, and the sentences were often so abstract that they were borderline incomprehensible. the author has a tendency to be very creative in her writing style, but it usually leans toward being well-balanced.

• plot was all over the place. very confusing. the confusion is echoed by other reviewers, who all came to different conclusions. some think mikah was really zico and others think he wasn't. the title and blurb of the book is about how he's an imposter, so the fact that it's STILL uncertain means the author kinda failed in the delivery of the storyline.

First off - be advised that I cannot provide any real reviews until Fauchi says we are on the other side of the pandemic.  Opinions only here for now.  That said, here goes:

Whatintheeverylovinghell did I just read?

Ok, from the looks of the reviews and comments that I read about the book, many have pointed out the main reaction the book brings on; wait, what happened, who is it, who did it - regarding the crazy a** H, so I will no go into all of that.  I will say however, that I felt the same way I felt when I watched (and I am about to date myself here)"Sommersby."  Like - who the heck was he really?  And while the book was no way near the ABSOLUTE masterpiece of Verity, nor was I anyway near as traumatized as I was when I finished it, BUT I had a similar thought process of "wtf"...downgraded by about 98% though.  At any rate, bottom line as it relates to Mikah/Zico mindf***

***my disclaimer until (circle back to first paragraph)
Honestly, I have no energy to provide a proper review.  Chalk it up to pandemic fatigue, COVID Fog, smelling my own breath in these daggone masks for two years - whatever you want to call it.  This book just added to my exhaustion.  Not a bad book at all.  And the writing did not make me want to call an editor and unload 4 letter words I promised myself I would stop using...Mostly, I just thought about what my gen z daughter says to me, "I cannot be held accountable for much of the content I consume during the Covid-19 global pandemic."

“I’d lose you to fairness” - Well, this line alone told me he was Zico, because Mikah met Isa first and made Zico promise that because he met her first Zico wouldn’t take her from him. Zico promised Mikah he wouldn’t take Isa from him. Like a true crazy person Zico kept his promise by becoming Mikah, thus never taking Isa from Mikah and not having to lose her to “fairness”.

Also the friend couple that died was another revealing moment because everything Mikah told the guy friend, was everything he felt about his brother and Isa.

There were so many more revealing moments, but they got lost in the convoluted language of the author.

Very good book, with subtle hints and hidden manipulation. I liked it very much, but I would have liked it more if the writer toned down on the flowery language in between connected thoughts or conversations. The author goes off on the scenic language route for so long I forgot what the heck they were talking about. It was like “hey do you want breakfast?” Inner dark talk for a whole page, past memories for another half page, emo thoughts for another half page… “yes.”… at this point I (the reader) forgot what the heck he is saying yes to.

Good book, that could have been great with a few tweaks and less flowery language.

BIG SPOILERS AHEAD LEAVE NOW IF YOU DON’T WANT THE BOOK RUINED!!!!

3.8 rating :(

Okay, so while I liked almost everything about this book there were quite a few things I didn’t like. First off the way the story jumps from one scene to the other I couldn’t keep up at times & found myself going back to re-read some parts because I couldn’t understand the flow from one to the next. Maybe it’s because i’m just ditzy & didn’t get it. & the way they just chalked the suicide of Nate & Aquarius (I don’t care for her actual name, I’m pulling a Isa) made no sense was it really a suicide?? Did Nate decide “if I can’t have her no one can” ??? Why was he the only one with a note?? Last & final “complaint” if you will, I wanted wayyyyy more answers on Zico’s death, if the family spilt so much money into finding him how come they never found his hidden spot if it wasn’t that far off from their property & not even Micah knew of it? & if it was hailing why would a 10 year old go out alone to a hiding spot. & they didn’t have no further explanation. This book could’ve definitely been longer to go into detail on these topics & just in general.

This is such a great book for people who love a hero that seems to have it all but has a single focus on the herione. The dedication that the two characters have for each other is amazing. I would call this book a slow burn, but its only eight chapters with a short epilogue. The epilogue is the only chapter with a sex scene, but it was great! I wish the book was longer or at least explained the ending a little more because I'm still confused. I think the writing to be a bit more explanatory. I think the author tried to impress upon the reader how intimate and close these two characters are through lack of explanation and some randomness in their conversations, but as a reader I want to understand and be a part of their close relationship. I think if the ending was a little clearer than this would be a 4/5 for me.

Confusing. I liked the story but it felt more than just a little confusing. Suspense is good and all, but I want my HEAs to be clear and not leave any questions in my mind

Also didn't like that Mikah didn't have any redeeming qualities like he's still studying so we don't know if he's successful in his career, doesn't cook, is messy. Doesn't give off dream guy vibes. He's obsessive and possessive but it seems dry, lacking real emotion.

The author writes amazingly, loved their other books. This one was just dry and emotionless for me

Isa and Mikah had been close friends since childhood and they were brought even closer by the disappearance of Mikahs twin Zico. But what seems to Isa as Mikahs dependence in her is really his obsession,  but when Zikos remains are discovered what will it mean? Thisbstory is captivating from the start the suspense and mystery build and in a way still remain even after the end.

What?

I didn't get something. Was Mykah actually Zico? Did Mykah kill Zico? What was the author trying to imply? I got bored and read pages before realizing I wasn't paying attention so I'm sure I missed something. This was not for me. I kept waiting for something to happen but it never did.

Strange novella.
The H “Micah” is a psychopath who apparently killed his twin brother “Zico” cause he was obsessed with the h. The H is an unreliable narrator as his memories are supposedly from “Micah’s” POV. The epilogue reveals that he’s actually Zico, which leaves some questions unanswered.

Very low steam. Sooooo much dialogue and it’s a bit all over the place. I kept falling asleep but I was holding on for this to come together but it was like let’s have this mystery. Let’s be sneaky but in a short book and it was all over the place.

DNF! I really liked the concept of this book but I just couldn't get used to the author's writing style. I didn't feel anything for the characters so I wasn't invested at all. If you can get over the way the author writes then you may like it more than me.
