Amazing book! I highly recommend it. It's very intense and describes things in an epic way. Reading this book showed me how amazing Alexander the Great was, but Jesus is the real hero.

This was a brilliant book. I read it with my 9 year old and she loved it until just over half way before she didn't want to finish it. This was through no fault of the book she was obviously because she was slightly to young for this level and length of book. I would say it was more and 11 year old plus book. But as an adult I loved the book I read it until the end and I would really recommend it for adults aswell as its a brilliant history book. I would of loved to see the pronunciation of names of people and places in brackets. We had loads of fun trying to pronounce them through and asking Google aswell.it was a very good engaging book that we learnt so much from. My daughter loved going to school after reading sections telling all her friends about what she had learnt. I really do recommend this book as its really exciting and gripping, page turner. I can't wait to read more from this author.
So much praise goes to the author and publishers for producing such an amazing fact filled story that both children and adults can learn and enjoy.

Readers need to know this book for youth is history and not fiction. This is the fourth book I've read by this author and think of them as cliff notes with more pages. I can move on to adult volumes concerning the same subject matter.

Reading this with my fact obsessed 9 year old. He loved this. Would have been even better with a couple of (better) maps thrown in so we could follow Alexander’s route: there was one but it was tiny.

I've literally been waiting for a whole year to have this book arrive at the library for me to borrow as they only have 1 copy in the whole system! Another of Dominic Sandbrook's 'Adventures in Time' series, I was particularly interested to read this one as my knowledge of Alexander the Great is very limited, and I've always found that learning about a new subject is always made easier if you start with a children's book. It's why I'm a huge advocate of books like this and the Horrible Histories series even for adults - they're great primers so you can understand the basics, before getting bogged down in more scholarly tomes.

In this instance, the author hasn't gone down the route of telling the story through the eyes of various real life characters who were there, I guess because there are such limited primary sources it would have essential been fiction. However, this is a very well written narrative history, presenting the factual history in an almost 'novelisation' format. It's got a great balance between the objective factual events and the more fictionalised scenes which portray those events, and certainy kept me engaged! I can see this absolutely appealing to its target demographic; just enough battles and blood to satisfy a younger reader's curiosities, without being overly graphic, and yet still clear and concise in its storytelling.

Clearly, there are elements of Alexander's story which have been toned down or omitted to suit the target audience, so it's definitely not a comprehensive history. However, it is a very good overview of his movements and his famed conquering of large swathes of territory. But, while it does give some insight into the man as well as the myth, I was slightly disappointed that the author didn't explore Alexander's character more. For example, while two of his wives do make an appearance (plus a brief hint of a dalliance withe the Queen of the Amazons), there is absolutely no hint that Alexander may have also had male partners. I do think this is a shame; I'm not saying it needs to be explicit, but there should be nothing wrong with stating the fact that same-sex relationships were accepted and understood more than 2000 years ago.

One of the podcasts I enjoy, 'The Ancients', has a presenter who is an expert on Alexander, but where I haven't known the history I've always been a bit confused when he discusses the topic. However, having read this, some of his comments now make a little more sense! Thinking I might need to go back and re-listen tona couple of old episodes to see if I can follow them better now I have this entry-level knowledge. I have tried listening to the author's podcast, 'The Rest is History', but unfortunately I found it incredibly dull - when you've got me falling asleep whole you're talking about the Tudors, then something is definitely wrong! But his books so far have generally been far more engaging and interesting, and I really wish he'd bring some of this energy to his work aimed at the grown ups!

Was it worth waiting a whole year for? Probably not, but I am glad I've read it and it would be one I'd point others to if they want to dip their toe into the world of this historical behemoth.

What a fabulously written book! Seriously spectacularly penned and a great account of Alexander the Greats life. With all of his battles, achievements and accomplishments throughout his time, the book does such a brilliant job at relaying the epic tale of Alexander the Great.

Written in a wonderful story telling format, this book immensely informative in a very easy to read way. It flows so well and is absolutely effortless in its retelling. It’s so enjoyable to read and you actually learn so much but it really doesn’t feel like learning!

History can sometimes be arduous and trudging to read but this was a joy. I got stuck into the book almost right away and within only a few pages I could tell I was going to love it.

It was seriously such a good idea of dispelling history to the masses and get more people reading about history! It’s brilliant for a young audience and also for older audiences too. I think just about everyone will enjoy this!

I can truthfully say now, that I feel like I know Alexander the Great and the stories of his life. It’s written like a brilliant epic, and will have you wanting to read more. I devoured the pages and loved it! Thoroughly recommend.

Thank you to the publishers and author for this book on NetGalley in return for my honest thoughts and review.

WOW!! This wasn't what I was expecting at all -like Alexander it's great!
I learnt so much whilst reading it of history, myths and fate.
It tells the story of Alexander, and life in those times.

Written in a way that helps bring the story to life
With explanations when something might give you strife
It is superb way to learn about this man.

History can be dull and boring - but now that's not true
When it is shared like this it is enthralling, too.
This is a book for anyone, a pleasure to read.

It has so much detail of life and events in those years
Of things that Alexander enjoyed and did - and what he fears.
The people who were involved and what they sought.

With details of gods and goddesses, life, food and more
This book is great for anyone who Ancient Greece wants to explore.
It is written in a way that has you turning the pages, not wanting to put it down.

What a great way to learn without it being a chore
This is the kind of book as a child I would adore
In fact, it still is one of the best historic reads I've read.

I chose to read my complementary copy of this fascinating book
And honestly highly recommend you open it and a give it a good look
I think you'll find it enthralling, what a superb read!
Something for all ages, that anyone could need.

I found this to be both an absorbing and well written narrative non-fiction book charting the life of Alexander the Great. From birth to death, this describes Alexanders world, culture, conquests and legacy in a style that reads like a novel, full of adventure and interesting characters. You get some good descriptions of the lands he conquered and the attitudes of the people he encountered as well as those of his Macedonian army. I had a very general understanding of Alexander prior to reading this and I'm pleased to say that I did learn quite a bit more through reading this, particularly about his legacy. I really enjoyed this and I'm sure children will too.
My thanks to #NetGalley and Particular Books for the ARC in return for an honest review.

I've always wanted to know more about Alexander the Great, his life and his many adventures. His story is fascinating and I was surprised to learn so much that I didn't know. His legacy really did continue for a very long time even after his death.
The book seemed a little bit childish at the start but got a lot better and was very interesting.

It definitely was an Adventure in Time and reading this I felt like I was experiencing the life of Alexander the Great in detail. So much information and insight given into his life, character and accomplishments. Children who are interested in historical characters to really get into the background rather than just key facts will love the level of detail in this.

This is my first one of the Adventures in Time series. It was pretty good. I'm not sure how kids would find it. It's great that history is being written for this demographic. I think, as a kid, I would have found fiction more accessible but I know that not all kids are like me. An important work. Kids need to be introduced to history.

An outstanding introduction to Alexander for middle school readers or high schoolers that aren't yet ready for meatier texts, but a fun read for anyone. Sandbrook always does a great job conveying a great deal of information to readers without sacrificing the page-turning, adventure narrative style.

Obviously written for a younger audience, but enjoyable for older people, too. A simply-told account of Alexander's life and conquest (which is an achievement in itself), retaining the romance and wonder in the tale of the most extraordinary mortal who ever lived.

Let's call it 3.5 stars
I expected to like this more than I did.
I found it a bit of a slog - possibly that's my fault and not the author's. And let's face it, Alexander's life WAS one long slog eastwards.

Lu à voix haute en anglais avec mon fils.

Très intéressant, comme d'habitude ! Fiston était captivé par les batailles épiques et par la trajectoire atmosphérique d'Alexandre le Grand.
