The Daltons #2
On a Midsummer Night
He broke her heart once. She cannot allow him to do so again…
Beth Dalton has made a lovely life for herself, and found fulfillment and a fortune creating holiday cards that charm Victorian high society. Now, she’s ready for an adventure. So, when she’s invited to spend the social season in London, she agrees. But she never thought the gentleman courting her cousin would be her brother’s best friend—the man who once shattered her heart...
Henry Ramsgate isn’t an idealist anymore. His father’s deathbed confession took care of that. Now, he’s ruthlessly determined to secure his career and future success—even if it means trading his hand in marriage for a promotion. All was going according to plan, too, until he encountered his first love. The woman he once hoped to marry…
He thinks love is a luxury he can’t afford. She thought she’d never love again. Can Beth and Henry overcome their past and Henry’s dark secret? Or will their second chance at happily ever after end as painfully as their first?

An utterly delightful & emotional read. Whilst this engrossing read could be read on its own it does make for a wonderful second in the series. I ‘m so glad Henry & Beth have had their second chance romance & now hope Oliver will find love too. Both Beth & Henry have secrets but as they realise their feelings they know secrets need to be shared. I also liked Lucy who began to show maturity. A very well written captivating romance. Which had me reaching for the hankies at the end
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

A perfect bite of a novella. Beth and Henry are sweet cinnamon rolls that must be protected at all costs. I loved the progression of their relationship as they reconnected and learned to let down their walls around each other. I did think that the barriers to their relationship were overcome far too easily, and some of the conflicts ended too conveniently, but for such a short book, there was a lot of heart here. Liana de la Rosa has such a lovely, easy writing style. I’m so glad that she was picked up by traditional publishing and it makes me more excited to pick up her most recent release.

I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of Liana De la Rosa's latest and I stayed up late to read it all in one indulgent sitting! If you've read The Daltons, #1, you'll love meeting Beth again. Beth is a fabulous heroine––strong, independent, effervescent––and she's living her life on her own terms. When the man she loved and believed she would marry shows up in her life again courting her cousin, sparks fly.
Like all De la Rosa's novel, there's sumptuous detail, lyrical prose, well-rounded entertaining characters, and an excellent, unique story. If you love second chance romances, you'll love Henry and Beth's story! Highly recommend.

A wonderful quick read. It has great characters in Beth, Henry and Oliver. Beth is witty and fierce. She is is an independent thinking young lady who wants the opportunity to make her own decisions. Henry is a young man in crisis. He finds himself trying to atone for the sins of his father. The story centers on a plot that gives Henry and Beth a second chance at a relationship. They have to confront the things that are keeping them apart and reach for their happily ever after.

Beth Dalton has found a happy life being single & has also, secretly made a success of a greeting card business that has charmed society ladies. She is going to London to spend a social season with her younger cousin. All is going fine until she discovers a new gentleman is calling on her cousin & it happens to be her brother's best friend who broke her heart years ago.
Henry Ramsgate was devastated when his father revealed secrets on his deathbed - it has been a few years but, in that time, he has ruthlessly secured his career & set his mother & sister up in schooling & a nice lifestyle. Now, he needs to marry to ensure a promotion that will secure success. All was running smoothly until he met his first & only love & the woman he had hoped to marry.
Beth & Henry have a bumpy road, but Henry is so strong with emotions that he shares & Beth is so strong with a brain that shows how thoughtful, kind & smart she was. It's a wonderful HEA & I highly recommend this second chance love story. I voluntarily read & reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts & opinions are my own.

This is only my 6th book by Liana De La Rosa and all the books she currently has out. I didn’t pick up her books until 2020 but I noticed she actually wrote her first one in 2017 so needless to say she doesn’t write often. Only 6 books in 5 years.
I’ve enjoyed her writing and her stories. This was a good read. I enjoyed reading it and I liked the characters. Not a super steamy read but there is some sex; short but well written.
She has a new series coming out in April 2023 so looking forward to that.

An achingly tender second-chance romance featuring a determined heroine artist who finds herself confronted with a past love who broke her heart, who is now a bitter and ambitious man with some secrets.
I loved the details of Beth's artistry, the postcards and her patron, and this was just a delightfully sumptuous novella.

“My secret! My horrible secret that I can’t tell anyone, including the reader! But that I will blow my entire life up over! And which will be an absolute zero nonissue given a single modicum of common sense!”
Hero’s conflict was exceedingly annoying. I liked the heroine, though, and they had good chemistry.

What makes a story interesting is turmoil and obstructions between the main leads .
This story has both.this is a second chance romance .our leads Henry and Beth loved and lost each other due to circumstances. Now both are struggling and fighting their own battles.
Henry again comes in the life of Beth as her cousin's suitor.
I like when historical authors create strong independent female leads who know their own mind and believe in themselves.
Beth Dalton is such character. She is extremely likeable.
Henry is in a fix.he knows some secrets due to which his family can be destroyed so he is trying to find solutions .his heart only beats for Beth though he is trying to secure marriage alliance with Lucy Dalton.
How are both protagonists overcome their respective problems and unite forms a very interesting plot.
A quick faced short read .I highly recommend it.

This was fine as novellas go, but I admit I was a bit underwhelmed. I don't think enough focus was spent on Beth and Henry actually getting to know each other again, and I found how everything was handled with Beth's aunt and uncle to be frustrating and a bit of a letdown, given the aunt's behavior towards Beth and the uncle's general behavior/covering up of his father stealing from Beth's family. Not really what I was hoping for from this story tbh.

Similar to the first book, this was very cute with just enough angst. My main issue is that everything ended too cleanly, it almost felt anti-climatic.

I loved the sweet second chance romance between Beth and Henry! Beth is a fun heroine with lots of passion and Henry truly appreciates her for everything she is. They both had certain problems with their families and I was a little misty eyed in the end but in the very best way ❤️

Beth glared at him. “Well, if you had given me a chance to collect my wits after you so eloquently professed your love for me and then proceeded to nobly state how you could not marry me and tarnish my future, I wouldn’t have had to come here, at night, to share how I felt about your imperious declaration.”
“‘Imperious declaration?’” he repeated, a brow rising.
“Indeed.” Beth leaned forward. “You do not get to make decisions about my future. Perhaps I love you, too, and am willing to embrace scandal to be by your side"
This was a pleasant second-chance romance but my favourite part was the heroine calling out the hero for his noble idiocy.

We read The Captain's Midwinter Bride, first in this series, and really liked this one. Maybe our expectations were too high, because this one fell (very) flat.
Beth and Henry were nearly engaged two years ago when he was called to his father's deathbed, where he learned THE WORST secret about his dad. (It is a pretty terrible secret, but it's a SECRET secret, so we readers don't find out what it is until the very end of the book. Also, no spoilers here.) In the meantime, Henry decides that it's not fair to marry Beth. He has to shore up his fortune so that if and when scandal DOES break, he will be able to weather it.
Confusingly, he's fine marrying a different woman who will have to weather the scandal along with him. (It is frustrating when MMCs in a romance put their love interests on high pedestals while not seeming to acknowledge that other women have ... thoughts and feelings?)
It's a romance, so they get their HEA, but we were a bit bored and also ended up feeling like Henry was a little bit ... dumb.
24-Word Summaries:
Meg: Two years ago Henry ghosted Beth. He refuses to bring her scandal … but he has no problem with bringing it on someone else…?
Laine: Beth and Henry went from nearly engaged to estranged when his dad died, and Beth doesn't know why. Answer: Henry is a dumb f*ck.

I OBVIOUSLY had to start Beth’s story straight after her parents book considering we left off on a slippery note with her.
As a second chance hater, I’m not sure how she did it but Liana has proven me wrong with both of these novellas.
This one was a little angsty at times which I 100% welcome. I think it’s extremely hard to do in such a short page count but she absolutely killed it.
Beth and Henry had met years previous and quickly fell for each other, due to circumstances in Henry’s life he feels the need to run away and start anew, leaving Beth in the dark. Fast forward Beth has taken the role of companion to her cousin Lucy and unbeknownst to her a certain suitor is due to call on her cousin…
The characters were well rounded and I felt like I had a good grasp of who they were as people, the balance between plot and romance was brilliant yet again and the tension and yearning was delicious. Beth and Henry so obviously belonged together and im glad there was no big dramatic scuffle at the end to create unnecessary drama. These two already had enough going on without it.
Again, another fabulous Liana book!

After absolutely adoring The Captain's Midwinter Bride, I was eager to learn about Phillip and Annaliese's daughter Beth, and this did not disappoint! I adored Beth and loved seeing how she interacted with her family, especially with her cousin Lucy and her brother Oliver. I always like it when there is love evident in family dynamics and there was so much love for her.
As for Henry, it took me a while to warm up to him. I just didn't really like his reason for leaving Beth but eventually, I came around to like him and I liked how he treated Beth as well. The other gripe I have is that sometimes the dialogue was used as character descriptors which felt odd. Like people don't describe the people around them if they aren't directly asked. I don't know how to explain it; it just felt off somehow.
I don't know if De la Rosa has plans for continuing this series but I desperately hope so! I would love to see a story about Oliver or even Lucy! I adore the Daltons and would read about them just hanging out honestly.

On a Midsummer Night by Liana De la Rosa is a beautifully written second‑chance romance that swept me away from the very first page. As the second book in The Daltons series, it delivers all the emotional depth and charm I hoped for, while giving Beth Dalton her moment to shine.
Beth has built a successful life for herself, only to have it upended when Henry Ramsgate—the man who once broke her heart—reappears. Their reunion is filled with tension, longing, and the bittersweet ache of past regrets. I loved how De la Rosa explored themes of forgiveness, resilience, and the courage to risk love again. Beth’s independence and Henry’s vulnerability made them a compelling pair, and their chemistry was undeniable.
This story is tender, romantic, and layered with Victorian atmosphere. A perfect read for fans of heartfelt historical romance and second chances.

A lovely second chance romance. Henry ghosts Beth immediately after proposing. He's called back home to his dying father who tells him a Terrible Secret that has him upending his life and turning his back on his friends. Beth, understandably devastated, is shocked to find him pursuing her cousin years later.
But their gravitational pull is too great. They can't get away from each other.
This is an emotional story and it's an absolutely lovely read.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was the second book I've read by Liana De la Rosa and I'm thinking she might become one of my faves. This book was adorable: angsty but not too heavy, and with all the yearning that I crave from my historical romances. I also love it when a hero pushes the heroine away "for her own good" *rolls eyes* and the heroine is like "yeah...I don't accept your resignation. I'm sticking beside you whether you want me to or not!" Henry is that kind of hero and Beth is that kind of heroine.

This is the sequel to the Captain's Midwinter Bride. Captain Dalton's daughter Beth Dalton reconnects with Henry and a heart warming romance follows. This beautiful novella also packs in strong and supportive family ties all around, which are always my favorite. The HEA was fantastic. Highly recommend for a light and uplifting read!

Loved this! The story was conventional (I guessed every turn of the plot) but the writing made it an enjoyable trip anyway. Loved our MCs, although there were times early on I wished they would communicate but they got there in the end. Would love to see stories about the brothers we've met and Lucy.

Sisterhood and family legacies
I really enjoyed this second installment in this novella duology. Beth is a fierce lady and I loved seeing her come into her own even as she guided her cousin to seek the same. Henry is such a mess but I loved seeing him come to find grace and love and release his anger. A swirling romance. I would love to see more in this world!

I LOVED this novella! It may be a quick read but it had everything you want in a historical romance: likable characters, swoony moments, and an intriguing plot. Very well written. I can't wait to read more by this author.

These characters are so wonderful, I wish we had more time with them, but I’m also happy they’re novellas so we can cut out all the lengthy drama that I’m sure would’ve unfolded had it been longer)
