Yo. I’m Kogure Kawanami, and my life’s a living hell ’cause I live next door to my psycho ex. She may look small and innocent, but she’s got more than a few screws loose. Right now, she’s totally obsessed with my friend’s stepsister, Yume Irido.
I thought she wanted to become Yume’s sister-in-law, but now she’s tryin’ to hook up some busty chick with Irido! Doesn’t matter, ’cause it’s not gonna work anyway! The Irido siblings have a strong, unbreakable bond. Trust me—my shipping radar never fails. They won’t end up like us. True love will prevail!
Dropped a little over 50% ish through fan translation when we got Kawanami's PoV for the first time, though V1+2 were enjoyable (can see my reviews for them). At the Afterward of V2, the author mentioned that it'd be new ground I believe as he had caught up to web novel version and wasn't sure where to go from there.
And the writer seems to have chosen to focus on side characters - this is a very common clutch used in a lot of long running LNs/manga that use this to stall the main pair's development. Ex Horimiya after the couple get together, focuses more on side characters. Same for many other series.
I do not enjoy this. I think Kawanami and Akatsuki are okay ish as side friends, but as a focus of the novel, they are much less interesting/engaging to me than the MC+FMC with their dynamic. Yes K+A have a similar dynamic to the main pair, but I don't enjoy the humor of K+A, where they used to date and A is stalker ish and K is gaggy. I'd prefer they stay on the sidelines, and I really don't care for these two.
Also, V1+2 showed that MC+FMC have lingering feelings for each other. I'd prefer this to be directly addressed rather than trying to maintain this status quo.
The beginning of the volume was enjoyable. I liked MC+FMC watching house alone in the storm, and I liked Higashira's home visit and how chill the 3 were reading in MC's room. But the shopping chapter for Higashira and FMC just felt like fluffy filler, where they tried too hard to make it funny by joking about the clothes/breast size, and I really hated that chapter. Nothing really happens, and it wasn't interesting or funny.
Then there was the chapter of Akatsuki's melancholy and bonding with FMC. Again, not very interesting. I don't care that she feels a bit left out, and I know they are good friends, but I wish it didn't have such an elongated chapter to reaffirm this. I don't care for Akatsuki at all, she's not funny to me and not engaging.
Anyway, with this latest chapter focusing on Kawanami, I'm done with this. I think it's clear the author wants to flesh out the side characters, but I don't find their antics/banter funny, don't like that the author doesn't address the lingering sentiments from V1+2, and I want works to have more actual direction and development. Higashira's still a funny character (and fairly unique as I haven't come across many incompetent but semi perverted female side characters who joke so much with the lead) but not enough to save this.
Overall, disappointing given the start/premise was interesting. 1.5/5 dropped around 52% ish through fan translation.
Edit: Because of the anime coming up and free time I had, I ended up picking this back up and finishing this volume 3, but I still didn't enjoy it. Kawanami and Minami's relationship parallels the main duo's but still aren't characters I enjoyed following. The end also essentially returns the two to the "status quo", much like V1+2 did for our main duo, and I am really not enjoying that about this series. It has some cute romances, some neat ideas, and characters can be fun, but there isn't actual romantic progress. Each volume is a "tease" with hints about developing feelings, only for characters to revert to their main feelings with occasional feelings about the significant others, which I am not enjoying. I might still read volume 4 though, mainly because I do enjoy Higashira as a character, and I heard the series does get better about progression, but I didn't enjoy this volume nor the two side characters featured so heavily. The semi-twist of the main duo working together to setup these two side characters was fine but not that interesting, and the penalty game of these two side characters needing to use their old childhood names was overblown - its not that big a deal in my opinion, even if it makes them recall their childhood friend/dating days. Overall a weak and uninteresting volume. 1/5

So Mizuto and Yume are both step-siblings and ex's. So they have a lot to put up with even before friends and acquaintances start interfering with their lives. One such person is Isana Higashira who has a crush on Mizuto, but still likes to hang out. Then there is the duo of Kogure Kawanami and Minami Akatsuki who were childhood friends who got a bit too intense in the past, but are still working things out. The fun of this volume was in how crazy everyone's relationships are!
Yume's two-faced attitude from last volume did not lead to any significant reflection this volume as there were no real consequences. Higashira continues moving at her own pace despite what happened between her and Mizuto, and he (Mizuto) continues to be super cocky for a loner bookworm. Half the volume was dedicated to Minami and Kawanami's history and dynamics. Two pretty weird characters that I have a hard time getting excited about. The whole ROM expert and PTSD thing is awkward (I mean he just got feed a lot and had his balls washed). Minami is at least kind of relatable as someone who goes crazy due to being desperately lonely. Not a whole lot happened but it had quite a bit of Higashira, so yeah.
