Recovering attorney James Asher just wanted to be left alone by the world as he wandered the West, living out his days in complete solitude. An aspiring screenwriter found him and persuaded him to work with her to co-write a screenplay about his unusual career and life. He reluctantly agreed to talk about his tragically heroic past as long as she agreed to tell it true. It did not turn out as either had hoped. Written in screenplay format, this story is the unintended result of their I’ll-fated “collaboration.”
Janitor. Truck driver. Pipefitter. Lawyer. Tour guide. I’ve been many things in my life. Unconventional and interesting are the most apt adjectives for my journey. I practiced law for twenty years, concentrating on representing victims of sexual abuse in civil litigation. I have seen the worst of humanity. I have seen the best of humanity. Along the way, the highs were pretty high, and the lows were pretty damn low. I also handled other types of cases and encountered crazy, goofy, unbelievable and hilarious people and situations. A few years ago, a friend suggested that I should write my stories down. I plan to write all of it. The highs, the lows, the wins, the losses, the heartaches, and the joys. My goal is foremost to educate, but also to entertain. My first book, Taming the Lion Tamers: The Inside Story of a Landmark Sex Abuse Case was not only the pinnacle of my legal career, but a microcosm of my life at the Bar. Together with my friend and colleague, Gregg Meyers, we took cases no other lawyers wanted and then utilized innovative and unconventional tactics that sometimes made sense and other times seemed crazy, but our track record speaks for itself. By conventional measures, we were successful with many verdicts and settlements in the millions of dollars. By our own measure we were successful because, on behalf of our clients, we routinely demanded and were able to obtain nonmonetary concessions from all types of organizations that implemented policies and procedures to make this world safer for kids. We did that because we care. If you are looking for formulaic legal thrillers, there are plenty of other authors out there for you. If you are looking for real world stories about complex litigation, sprinkled with unorthodox strategies, out-of-the-box thinking, and a heavy dose of humanity, I invite you to check out my books. All are not filled with heavy duty stuff. In the near future, I will be publishing several more books about individual cases, a collection of wacky, but true, stories from my career and a deeply personal story about my struggle to reemerge back into society from a very, very dark place that I slipped into because of the work I immersed myself in. The toll for me was heavy, but I don’t regret a thing. If I was able to save or protect a single child, then my burden was worth it. And if one single parent, teacher, coach, or administrator learns anything from my stories and thereby makes the world safer for kids, then my life’s work has been meaningful.

This book is written in a screenplay format which makes it different from the “norm” and almost makes you feel privy to a story in a way you would not normally have. The story itself is so inticing and adds such a twist. I won’t say more as I don’t want to give spoilers, but I would definitely recommend it.
