Puki Horpocket Presents #2

Nimi: When First Contact Becomes Last Call

Rate this book
Nimi was a nobody. Then he was the chosen. Now he's the sole survivor.

Nimi Korble endured a meteoric rise to fame, one that culminated in a tragic event seldom seen in the universe. Amazingly, he takes it all in stride, as he never sought the notoriety that doomed his species. This short interview explores what happens when a civilization completely botches first contact.

Puki Horpocket is a literary titan with a loyal fandom that stretches across the universe. His merits are unchallenged, unsurpassed, and unquantifiable.

Zachry Wheeler is a human author and terrestrial translator for Puki Horpocket Presents, a collection of legendary tales from beyond the black.

This author is a favorite of mine and he produces hilarious books. The form of the story is that the stories are basically WIKIs for a gigantic space station. That is quite an amazing bit of world building. There are only two characters but both are well designed to play their roles. While there isn’t actual action the story moves in an exciting manner. I found it difficult to put the book once I started reading it and I reached the end far too soon. I recommend this book to anyone who likes a bit of nonsensical fun in their reading. If this author doesn’t tickle your funny bone I’ll be very surprised.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

An entertaining read! Nimi is a satirical play on the first contact science fiction story oddly reminiscent of Kurt Vonnegut's Billy Pilgrim from Slaughterhouse Five. Being the chosen species representative can be a universal letdown if you let it, but Nimi has a message to help all cope.

A wonderful look at how things can go horribly wrong when reality and expectations misalign catastrophically. Definitely worth the read, and looking forward to many more.

Puki Horpocket's interviews are so enjoyable and Wheeler is a great interpreter. This one is no different! I was a bit sad that it's so short because I was just getting into it and it was over. Overall, it's a truly enjoyable read and I'm now a follower of the FYFI movement.

Greetings, Earthling!

My name is Zachry Wheeler and I'm a science fiction novelist based on Earth. I was chosen to serve as translator for all terrestrial editions of Puki Horpocket Presents, a literary series beloved throughout the universe.

It's been a great honor.

It's also been super stressful.

Decoding an alien tongue is daunting at a baseline, let alone through the prestigious lens of Puki Horpocket. He is renowned for his unique blend of commentary, interviews, and dramatic depictions. My job is to stick the landing for human readers. I sincerely hope that I do his words justice, but admittedly, I sometimes feel like a toddler translating Orwell.

The Durangoni Space Station is home to countless species and cultures, and thus, countless lexicons. Some things are universal, like beer. Other things are regional, like atmo barriers on artificial oceans. Some things are truly horrifying and do not warrant translation, regardless of their pop culture equivalents.

I did my best, but aliens be weird, y'all.

Puki Horpocket tales are chock-full of excitement, debauchery, and blatant disregard for delicate sensibilities. Fair warning: the language is lewd and the characters are crude, so keep your wits inside the vehicle and enjoy the ride.

Solid 3 stars. I’m sad, because I’m still riding the high of the greatness that was “Roy,” the first book in this series, and didn’t realize “Nimi,” this second installment, was a short story. Just 30+ pages. I want more.

It was well done for what it was. I love the philosophy behind discussed so casually between two different alien species. Nimi is a nihilist and the last of his species. This short story is an interview with him. Wish it was longer. I was left wanting more, even though I got all I needed. The story was complete as-is, I’m just a glutton for a good story and never want a good one to end. Had this story been an actual book length like Roy, it probably would’ve easily been 4 stars as I would have been more emotionally invested.

I’m really enjoying the author’s writing style -snarky and inappropriate aliens with style mixed with dark humor and intelligence. It’s fun and funny (they’re totally different, but equally important). I have the 3rd installment, “Phil,” downloaded as well so I’m moving onto Phil now. I haven’t looked at the length, so I guess we’ll be surprised.

Continue to recommend. Don’t let the 3 stars fool you -that’s my picky self-rating system. Worth the read.

humorous quick read

A story told in what could be a chapter. A quick read humorously told with the main character nonchalantly answering questions about his involvement in an event.

Nimi really is one of a kind, poor beggar and has a big following for his FYFI philosophy which I think I am now going to adhere to.

Good, but too short

Not bad, but too short. This could have been combined with other stories as part of larger collection in one book.

Not as entertaining as Roy but it's hard to be when you are as short as Nimi. Still, great writing and a hilarious character concept made it enjoyable.
