Sanang #1

Dragon Awakening

Rate this book
A K-pop idol with an awakening dragon within
A vampire who is not dead
Sparks fly when they meet

Sen
I saw him in semi-darkness. My prey was so beautiful. So alluring. Tousled, wavy dark hair obscuring his closed eyes. Thick, long lashes making half moons above his high cheekbones. Lips that were dark red from a touch of rouge. His body moved sensuously with the music. Unhurried, languid, and expressive.

Mireu
Had I ever gone against a vampire so ancient? The strength I sensed in him was intoxicating. Of course, it didn’t help that he ticked all my boxes. Tall, toned body with the face of an angel. Long, wavy, dark hair with hints of auburn highlights that I could run my hands through. His green eyes were sinfully large with long thick eyelashes, his nose long and straight, his skin flawless, and… he had these lips that looked infinitely kissable.

Sanang is a K-pop group composed of five idols with special abilities that fight against dark creatures. This is the first book in the Sanang series.

I really wanted to like this book. And there should be a lot to praise. But... well, either I am being too harsh or the book did not really use its potential and really develop.

I am not sure I can properly express why I didn't really connect to the story or characters although that... would kind of be a lie? The more I think about it, the more I can pinpoint some pretty real concerns that stopped this book, in my eyes, from becoming not just good but great.

Characters are certainly the first aspect. While not being familiar with the original series this one is a spin-off off, I... don't think that should matter? I sometimes got lost and the only thing that saved me was that the characters were pretty "simple". I shelved Bin as "shy" and... that is that even though he must have some depth. Hidden. There were just too many characters, too little time. (I mean, to nerd, there's a reason each Avenger got a separate film before the film itself, that is why it was so good, because you felt connection and maybe admiration for each individual). But even this first book showed quite overtly how this is all going to play out with the two groups getting fixated their obvious soulmates. So he's going to get his book, just like other members and throughout it all, I just hope their relationships will be a bit better.

This one was all drama, no, melodramatic. In a bit artificial fashion, like when you have your two protagonists but you don't know why they can't be together so you make up some Super Dramatic reason that falls apart the second someone touches it. It was all "I can't be with you" and "I want to be with you" - from both of them and the emotions that should have been powerful just felt... silly? Hollow? Absurd? Like seeing a crying child reaching for his tedy bear. That's like, right there in front of him. But wait, he would have to stand up and take it. And that's just not possible. And you want to feel bad for the kid but... well, it's their decision to suffer.

Also, when they were together, they mostly just got naked, so as a reader, it felt more superficial.

The book even avoided the whole vampire hunter falling for a vampire by basically creating another special kind of vampire that are good. Go figure.

The maybe last big issue was Information Distribution - a combination oversharing and info dumps coupled with miscommunication. One second, I was reading about things I Don't (Yet?) Care About, the other I had to listen to someone repeating things or remembering some moment in their past... than the two morons met or talked and you knew, you just knew everything could be so much better if they only shared this super basic information. So of course, they didn't. It's bad enough when it happens in a relationship, but there it's at least realistic. Here, it was just frustrating and instead of doing that hand-just.kiss-thingie, you end up mentally pushing them to finally reveal the truth, nay, to admit to what is so obvious but would mean there would be no conflict because the characters would be more prepared for what is to come.

I mean, the moment I saw there were only about forty pages to the end and they were preparing for some event, I knew what was going to happen. Honestly, there are a bit too many transparent moments and moves and a bit too heavy... handling. Authors plot, sure, that's how you create... the plot. Sorry, bad joke. But sometimes, you can see the ploting, you can see the author pretty much pushing characters into a certain outcome. (Characters said it's fate and yes, it should be! but that's when it feels natural but, maybe partially because of switching between the two POVs, you knew too much and it felt... you could see the "manipulation" and how it was all "orchestrated") It's not a good look on any book.

The K-Pop aspect kind of says it all - it could have been a cool one, and yes, it made their lives even more hectic than just being hunters, but the reader never sees it, there's no rockstar vibe, there's just private planes and that one reason they went to USA. It just feels so... underdeveloped that you ask yourself why it had to be there, only coming up with a conclusion "because it sounded cool" and that applies to a few things in the book. The book just didn't commit to anything properly and instead of providing us with an interesting mix, it was more of a mess. Even the few glimpses of this book actually happening in Seoul and their culture not being the usual American one, it just barely affected anything.

So basically, I feel like there were many great ideas that just never reached their full potential. Maybe I should have just said "this is a romance-focused book, the other aspects are pure decoration" and leave it at that, not sure why I felt the need to expound on these issues in this pretty random book, but here we go. *sigh* I really should get back to my own writing if my creative energy feels suppressed enough it bursts at the barest hint of a provocation.

I can't wait to find out more about all of them, but I'm happy Mireu is happy and taking something for himself instead of only being for duty and responsibility. I agreed with him that if he kept as he was and his dragon didn't force the issue with their Mate he would have ended up black like the other Imuri.

I found this quite unique in that I haven't read many books with this much folklore, pop culture, and supernatural types mixed together in quite this way. I'm intrigued to see where it goes from here.

While I was engaged most of the time because things did seem to progress, there was so much that didn't progress at a reasonable pace. The bond and connection was really well done, the communication was not. And that was mostly on Mireu's part because they were the one who was constantly holding back and doubting themselves, their dragon, and their mate's absolute conviction. I do think that hesitance is important in stories like this because it gets rid of the unbelievability of a lot of the insta-love stuff, but the level of hesitance here was overplayed.

For all the words in the story I felt like there weren't really enough. I found myself wanting more of Sanang's interactions, dynamic, interplay, and personalities. The same for Sen's group with all the interesting characters introduced there. Though some of them may have been introduced in the slightly related series, it was something that was definitely missing in this story.

As for the actual plot, it was pretty engaging when we finally got around to it nearly 3/4 of the way through the book. Overall I think this was a pretty good start to a new series that I'm interested in continuing, but in all honesty, if I do pick it up, it'll likely sit on my TBR pile for a bit until I feel like spending longer than necessary to read it. While this wasn't a really long book it felt long and that's...not awesome.

Being a K-Pop group is great cover for traveling the world to hunt bad supernatural beings. Also makes it really hard to find time for yourself. So of course the first time Mireu gets away in ages, he has to run into an ancient vampire who also is apparently his mate. And he's flying back to Korea tomorrow, and may have accidently let his dragon mark the vampire.

Sen, the not really vampire but really close but better being, cannot believe he has found is mate again. Yes, he's been popping up throughout time. Not always a man, but always human, except this time. Not sure what, but definitely not human. And what are the chances Sen is also in a supernatural hunting group? Except his is composed of other supernats like him who want to stop those causing problems. Cue Sen's trip to Korea to help stop an ancient evil dragon that was locked away generations ago.

Lots of struggle between family/cultural obligations and hearts desire. Also a lot of parallels of Mireu understanding and accepting his dragon as learning to love one's self. This book gets dragged down a little, because you can tell it is a first in there series. You will also get a sense of the other future couple pairings, it's not that subtle. Was disappointed that the climax battle was skipped over. You get a little bit of a recap after the fact, but I think that was a big missed opportunity.

I really enjoyed this book! This is a new to me author and I am definitely adding them to my list. It is technically a spin-off but I didn't have any trouble following along or understanding. This book is about Sen and Mireu. Sen is a Vampire who is super old and Mireu is a dragon in a k-pop group whom the entire group hunts creatures…because why not. They meet and Sen feels a soulmate pull between them. Sen is part of Taiser and also hunts creatures. So they have quite a bit in common. This book has action, adventure, romance, fantastical creatures, and great world-building. Definitely recommend this book and can't wait for the next book (definitely going to read the Taiser series now!)

A Good Start

A new to me author and I have to say, the world building and character development were both really well done, I enjoyed the characters, both main and secondary.
The only problem I have is that the same thoughts and feelings seemed to keep repeating, but I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next.

Overall, this book was good. I felt there was just a smidge too much holding info back from the reader to increase the punch of the big reveal, so that got kind of annoying. I am excited to read the next book! So awesome to see Sett get his atarav, he’s a sweet guy. I wasn’t sure at first if this was set in the Tasier world but I really like that series too so I’m glad it is. Recommended!

This is the first in a new series, which is itself a spin-off from the Tasier series, and as such is set in the same universe with a crossover of characters which have already appeared in that series. The main core of characters are new, however.

This is Sen and Jin (Mireu)'s story and serves as an introduction to the Sanang world. Jin is a K-pop star with a hidden life as a hunter of creatures, which is how he meets Sen, as he's hunting what he thinks is a vampire when he meets Sen in a club. Sen is a different type of vampire, born and not bitten and as such intrigues Jin enough that they spend time together rather than Jin just hunting him.

I can honestly go a bit hot and cold with dragon shifters, fated mates and the like but this is on the whole done well, if not a bit insta-love for me. I like a bit of build up and this was pretty much on the spot, mate bond, done. (I realise this is just me though). I liked Sen, and Jin and liked the idea of the dual life hunting and performing.

There was a lot to like about this book, I liked the connection to Korea and how well thought out and researched it seemed to be. I liked the connection with Tasier (as I've read those books I liked that Easter Egg of Nikki).

As the first of a series I am sure there is a lot more to come of Jin, Sen and the rest of Sanang and Netru and I'll likely continue as I want to know how it all comes together. That, and I can't wait to meet Jin's Dragon too.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

A good start to the series

I liked a lot of things about this book. The concept behind it is an interesting one and I like the idea behind what appears to be behind the series long plot. When Mireu and Sen were together they had good chemistry and I particularly liked Sen as a character. He had such a quiet strength and presence that he quickly became my favourite character (though Wyn is in second place). What I had a bit more trouble with was the idea that despite having had so much training there seems to have been no real education. These guys appear to have effectively been okay with killing a bunch of people without actually knowing whether they were bad or not. I’m not sure that sets them up as particularly sympathetic heroes and whilst there were large portions of Mireu’s character I enjoyed I couldn’t help come back to the question of why he seemed to never question any of the orders he was given. Don’t get me wrong, the good guys are good (or at least it doesn’t necessarily come across that they’ve not been slowly committing species cleansing for years) and they clearly want to try to stop bad guys, but it just chafed which means this is more a 3.5 rounded up. That being said I did still enjoy the book and I’ll be reading the next in the series.

This was so good! It has everything you can wish for, dragons, kpop, fated mates, magic, vampires, other paranormal beings!

This is the beginning of a new series and I couldn't be more excited! This first one is about Sen an Ankeneh (vampire-like race) who sees Mireu (Jin), warrior protector from the original 7 families, across a club and feels the pull to him. Both of them go from 0 to 1k in a blink of an eye, Sen feels Mireu could be the next incarnation of his true love while Mireu is conflicted about what his inner dragon tells him and what he has been taught to know. Their story was cute and at times a tad frustrating because of Jin's feelings about responsibility and duty (being a warrior + being a kpop idol + having to maintain a specific image to the outside world), but overall entertaining.

It has a very good world-building and the side characters will have their own story (the name of the series is the name of the kpop group). judging by the ending, the series will have one main plot but does not end on a cliffhanger, it's more like a "to be continued..." which I'm happy with. This was my first book from this author and will not be the last!

Wonderful paranormal romance with a unique premise and incredible worldbuilding. Love the mythology and the original approach to vampire and shifter lore!! Mireu's (inner) dragon is so lovable and brave, and funny too. I loved how he was written. Mireu and Sen are amazing characters and their love is beautifully written, the kind of love that transcends time. It's impossible not to root for them instantly. There's an element of enemies-to-lovers that creates tension and sparks in the best way, but the depth of their emotional connection is quite enchanting too. Mireu and his friends are in a K-Pop band, but nothing is as it seems, and he is more than a match for the predator he's suddenly inexplicably drawn to. I loved how devoted Sen is to Mireu! The secondary characters, both Sen's friends and Mireu's, are very well drawn and intriguing and likable in their own right.
There's a link to the Tasier world, which was introduced in the author's first series, and I was delighted to see some familiar characters make an appearance.
I can't wait to see what's next in this series, or who!

I loved the world Arian Williams created with the Tasier series, so when I found out that Sanang is set in the same universe I was very excited. The two series don't seem to have a ton of character overlap so far, but they have the same fascinating mix of modern and mythical that I find so captivating. It might seem like a stretch to mix K-pop, dragons, and vampires, but Mireu and Sen made it work for them. They were downright swoony as lovers, and I fell fast and hard for their emotionally charged connection. With plenty of new lore to discover and a centuries-old evil stirring up trouble, Sen and Mireu's journey had more than a few twists and turns along the way. I'm already very invested in Sanang's success against the Imugi, and while there's still so much I don't know about the characters I've met, I can tell they're gearing up for a difficult battle ahead. Sen and Mireu's romantic journey came to a satisfying happy-for-now, but I really hope we'll get to revisit them later in the series because they still have a lot to work through before they can be together and at peace.

I really enjoyed this book. This was a new to me author. I was drawn to this book first by the cover and then the blurb. I thought a k-pop group that also hunts vampires was a novel idea. It wasn't something you read everyday, and I was disappointed. I loved the world building. Getting snippets of the backstory as it pertains to the villain, was great. We weren't given all the information just enough to tease us.
Jin, was such a badass. Our baby dragon was a treasure. I really felt for him since he is the only member without family. He has this responsibility that was thrust upon him and he does his duty even when it means given up on doing something he wants.
Sen was such a sweetheart. I loved that he wasn't a typical vampire that required blood. I found him to be adorable with how he treated Jin, even when Jin was being difficult.
I recommend this book if you want a different take on vampire stories. Also, if you love a book that's set in a foreign location.

I said it about the Tasier books and I'll say it again. I haven't got a clue what this book is about but I love it. From page one Arian Williams just manages to pull me into the words and I can't get back out until I've finished, literally reading through the night. It's just too compulsive to put the Kindle down and if I can keep my eyes open and read then I will.

Again AW draws us into an imaginary world of monsters, time travel, spirits, shifters and K-Pop stars, shakes us up and spits us out again at the end, panting and in need of the next book!!!

With the a visual picture drawn in words this book can be described as beautiful in the way AW is able to explain the worlds and times travelled through.

I loved this book and totally recommend it for your Kindle, I can't wait for book 2. xx

Dragon Awakening is set in a new Sanang universe. Sanang is a K-pop group and Mireu is a member of and a dragon shifter. Sen is Ankeneh which is a living vampire. Mireu and Sen meet at a club and hit it off, go home together and Mireu forms a bond with Sen. They are both fighting evil but neither knows that of the other. They can communicate with each other even thousands of miles apart. Loved, loved, loved Mireu and Sen!! Dragon Awakening has a fantastic group of secondary characters and I’m hoping we’ll get their stories too. Overall, fantastic! The story is well written with fantastic pacing that makes it hard to stop reading.

Dragon Awakening is the first book in the new Sanang series. Here we meet Mireu who is a young dragon and a member of a K-Pop group that also fights dark creatures. Sen who is an Ankane, an immortal vampire like race. They meet and a bond is formed between them. Not knowing that they both fight the same evil creatures, they keep many secrets from each other. Can they keep their bond with everything that is going on. We are introduced to an amazing group of side characters. I can't wait for the next book of the series. This book is well written and action packed. Any book that can make me laugh and cry out loud is one I would recommend and this one did both.

This book was an unexpected and brilliant surprise.
It was a book about fated soulmates, one being a famous K-pop singer, dragon shifter, and warrior named Mireu and the other being an Ankeneh (a type of vampire) and warrior named Sen. It had incredibly detailed world building that will make for many great future novels.
It's my favorite kind of book, one that has magic, action, mystery, romance, and a HEA. I could feel all the emotions—the sweetness, tenderness, love, desire, and want. I admit there were moments where I wanted to scream for the characters to just talk to each other, yet I understand why they kept their secrets.
The main story is resolved in this book, but an ongoing enemy is left to conquer in the future. This book is a new favorite that I will reread many times in the future. I highly recommend it.

I liked the premise for this story a lot— K-pop plus a romance between a dragon shifter and a living vampire who have an instalove level connection, a strong bond that comes with fascinating benefits, and a penchant for opposing evil—what’s not to like? The world building and character development were both really well done, and while sometimes they seem to visit, and revisit, the same thoughts and feelings more than necessary, overall, I really enjoyed the book.

This is the story of Sen and Mireu(Jin). Arian is a first time author for me and a really good surprise. Dragon Awakening is the first book in the Sanang series. I really enjoyed reading this story and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series as they are written. I loved Sen just a little bit more than Jin, love his personality. This book is beautiful with great characters, main and secondary. Loved the combination of modern mixed with myth. Really like the different spin on dragons and fated mates. Recommended.

This is a first for me from this author and I really enjoyed this book, especially when it combines my love for K-Pop and Paranormal. I like both Mireu, Sen and all the side characters mostly Bin. I loved the metaphysical bond connection concept. It was something new and I hope its added more in the upcoming books. Also this book is very sexy. There was unfortunately a lot of planning with just a little action but it didn't detour me too much. I will definitely be continuing on with this series.

Mireu is a member of a K-Pop band and is a secret hunter of all things evil. He has a dragon side that is pushy and demanding and not above pouting if the circumstance fits. Sen is an Akeneh, an ancient living vampire. Sen is in the club looking for someone to have fun with when he realizes that Mireu is looking straight at him. They have good chemistry. This story really didn't keep my attention and I'm hoping that maybe the next one will be better. I received an ARC of this book for my honest review.

Love this world. Sen met Mireu in a club and they hit it off. Sen is millennia old and he suspected that Mireu was his soulmate. Mireu is part of a K-Pop group but a dragon as well. What no one suspects that the group he belongs to are hunters that go after dark creatures. Sen is also part of a group that does the same. Tasier is mentioned but not really a big part. I cannot wait to read what is next as the big bad was not really taken care of.
