Sons of Sinclair #4

Highland Beast

Rate this book
Bàs Sinclair is the cold and brutal hand—and sword—of justice across the Highlands. He has one destiny: to bring fear into the hearts of guilty men. But when he is called to execute a midwife for her crimes, he cannot raise his weapon. For Bàs already knows this lovely, part-wild creature. After all, she gave him his first and only kiss…

Shana Drummond will do anything to protect her beloved sister. Now her cruel, merciless brother-in-law has called upon Bàs to have Shana killed for crimes she didn’t commit. She can’t reconcile the cold, lethal warrior before her with the gentle one she met—nay, kissed—only days before.

But mercy from Bàs can only lead to one thing: war among the clans. A war that will test allegiances, tear families apart, and challenge everything Bàs knows about himself and his heart. Because once this Highlander knows love, nothing will stop him from keeping Shana safe…even if it means destroying his own destiny.

I am Heather McCollum, writer of 16th and 17th century Scottish romance full of adventure and intrigue, sprinkled with humor, history, and spice. Brawny Highlanders and feisty heroines are my favorite characters!

I am also a mom of three kids, dog-mom of one rescued geriatric golden retriever, and wife of one 6 foot 4 inch Highlander. When I’m not trying to help my kids make it through the day, baking things I see on The Great British Baking Show, or writing, I’m usually educating women on ovarian cancer (I’m a nine-year survivor).

I love kilted heroes, chai lattes, and eating buttered air-popped popcorn for dinner on Friday nights (my dog loves this one too).

3 sad stars. This was good but I wanted it to be better.
I love a tortured, misunderstood hero. A sweet on the inside man who is forced by cruel outside forces to be a killer against his nature. Bás was this hero in spades and his story had the potential to be epic and heartbreaking but sadly, I spent much of it being bored and frustrated. This author just did not get there for me, she got close and had some good elements to make this work but the story was too bogged down in convoluted intrigue and various side characters that the romance was lacking and the redemption for the horseman of death was slightly underwhelming.
I’m disappointed.
I liked Shana, as a heroine, she was great and strong and the idea of her being a midwife helping bring forth life and who balanced out Bás was a great one, but the execution did not culminate in a satisfying way. The chemistry between these two could have been hotter and I really think the author made a huge error not making Bás a virgin. She almost made him a virgin, why didn’t she go the whole way and make him completely inexperienced? It fit with his story and his background and his whole entire personality to have avoided and waited so why didn’t the author do it? It’s like she was too afraid to make him seem less manly so had to throw in a previous, one time sex partner and it was terrible. Bás wouldn’t have slept with someone who had been given as a gift to him. That’s just distasteful. I wanted him to be too noble to accept such a gift. Gah!
Anyway other than that the beginning was really slow and the couple was hardly together in the book. I needed more from the romance and less from the intrigue. The whole plot with her sister and her husband and child had little to do with these two as a couple and I found it very uninteresting.
Ugh I’ll say it again, this was good but this could have been better.

Bàs Sinclair is the hand of justice across the Highlands. Shana Drummond will do anything to protect her sister and nephew. Now her cruel, merciless brother-in-law has called upon Bàs to have Shana killed. But, after getting to know Shana, will Bàs be able to raise his sword to her, or will he risk a war among the clans to save her and change his destiny?

This is the fourth book in the Sons of Sinclair series. This is my first read from this author and I felt it could be read alone, although all the other family members appear and it probably would have increased my enjoyment to have read their stories, too.

I really loved this book! At the beginning, readers are introduced to the hero as a sweet little boy who was emotionally wrecked by his father and forced to become an executioner. Now grown, he’s living alone in the woods surrounded by animals when the heroine shows up on his property, running away from her brother in law with her sister’s just-born baby. I liked the pacing of this story a lot and felt like it became very exciting towards the end. There was an excellent balance between the characters and I loved how Shana helped Bàs find peace.

I couldn't love Bás anymore. He was such a misunderstood hero, tortured from infancy by his father's ideas. He is still a sweetheart even do he has lived a life of death and pain. I loved this one so much! And Shana was such a strong heroine that she never judged him by tales of him, she judged him by understanding and getting to know him. As always, Joshua steals the story.

Highland Beast by Heather McCollum is an enchanting and heartwarming journey featuring the last son of the Sinclairs, Bàs, and Shana Drummond, a mid-wife accused of witchcraft and murder.

Bàs Sinclair and his brothers are known as the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse. Bàs wields an ax and sword while wearing a human skull mask. He brings swift justice as the clan's executioner, dutifully keeping up the ruse that he's the mighty Horseman of Death. But he is much more than the feared harbinger of death he was raised to be. Away from his family and clansmen, he can be himself, a softhearted and gentle warrior who loves animals. Bàs is an endearing hero with plaguing insecurities who I quickly fell in love with!

As for the heroine, Shana Drummond she is a young woman in need of protection. Bàs and his loyal animals quickly become her sanctuary. Shana's bravery and compassion challenge Bàs to conquer his demons and dispel his self-hatred. She sees through the carnage to the charming highland warrior he truly is. Shana is a strong and relatable female lead who I admired.

Bàs and Shana's story is truly heart-melting! I loved how their relationship slowly evolved yet they were completely captivated by each other from the start. They are opposites in every way but their differences are what makes them perfectly matched. Prepare to be swept away as this fierce scot and bonny lass discover harmony, fitting all their broken pieces together to find everlasting love.

A highly recommended stand-alone historical highland romance by the talented Heather McCollum!! 5 STARS!!

I really liked this book! This is my first book by Heather McCollum and I already know it will not be my last. I want to read the rest of this series as soon as I can get my hands on them! These characters were perfection. Bas is Death, while Shana is a midwife and brings life into the world. These two were complete opposites, but they balanced each other in such a great way. I always have a soft spot for male characters who believe they cannot be loved.

The plot was engaging. I did feel like I lost a little interest in the last 100 pages, but the ending was very good and picked back up. I do feel like this focused more on the characters than the plot. The characters developed more than the plot did. However, there was still a plot, which I liked.

This book was super easy to read. I flew through it very quickly because it was such a well written book. While this is the fourth in the series, it can be read as a standalone; however, the characters from the first 3 books in this series are side characters that show up a lot in this book.

A couple triggers to be aware of are death and pretty much everything to do with giving birth/pregnant. It goes into a lot of detail about births, so just be prepared for that since Shana is a midwife.

“there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death…”

I’m always a soft touch for a story with a maligned highland hero and a feisty heroine. Particularly for Shana Drummond who sees through the public persona of the Sinclair brother named Death to the true man inside. Set in the 1590’s in Northern Scotland.
As a five year old child, his father called him to his purpose with the words, “Ye became the Horseman of Death the day of your birth, the day your mother died giving ye life. ’Twas why I named ye death, Bàs.”
Bàs is known as the Fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse, the Sinclair brother named Death, and trained to be just that, to be the clan’s executioner. Fearsome to behold, mounted on a pale horse, an unparalleled fighter, men quaked when he and his cohort, a spectre of biblical proportions, were aimed towards them.
Bàs sadly and lovingly maintains a garden of rocks, a silent monument to his victims in a highland dell. With a wolf as his companion, Bàs’ fierce outer persona is seeking to come to grips with his inner poet, attuned to beauty and nature. He’s bearing a great sadness.
Shana is a midwife who steals away from the Oliphant clan to save her sister Ivy’s newborn babe from her brutal husband Erskine Oliphant, who knows the child is not his.
The meeting of these two will change both their lives.
A tale of misunderstanding, of love and acceptance, of Beauty and the Beast.
I loved every minute of it!

Bàs Sinclair is the cold and brutal hand and sword of justice across the Highlands. He’s built himself a home on the edge of his family's lands where he can be himself & care for his animals. One day he finds an unconscious young woman & a young baby, when she recovers she leaves to rescue her sister, Ivy. Then he is called to execute a midwife for her crimes, he cannot raise his weapon. For Bàs already knows this lovely, young woman. Now her cruel, merciless brother-in-law has called upon Bàs to have Shana killed for crimes she didn’t commit. But mercy from Bàs can only lead to one thing: war among the clans.
The fourth book in the series & it’s easily read on its own. Bàs has been something on an enigma throughout the series & I loved getting to know the real man & it was a revelation as he's nothing like the image he's portrayed for years, he melted my heart when Hamish died. Shana is a woman who has known grief but has become stronger because of it. I loved that Shana saw the real Bàs & I loved how they grew closer & fell in love. Their journey to a HEA wasn’t smooth but it made for an enthralling read. There’s a horrid villain who did get his justly deserved comeuppance

I just love this series! The Sons of Sinclair series is about 4 brothers who were raised to believe they were warriors like the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse. This book is the 4th in the series about the youngest brother, Bas. Bas in gaelic means death. He rides a pale horse just as in the prophecy and wears a skeleton mask to show he represents death.
Bas feels he is unlovable because he wreaks of death.
Shana is fleeing an abusive brother in law who is threatening her sisters baby. When she starts being pursued by wolves she climbs a tree to escape. She gets the baby tied up to a branch and starts to climb herself when she slips, falls, hits her head and knocks herself out. But she is rescued by Bas. He takes her and the baby home to recover.
Shana has no idea who Bas is, other than a kind man who rescues both man and beast in distress.
Will her opinion change when she finds out he is known as the Executioner of Death.
I loved seeing these two get to really know each other and grow to love each other.
Can't wait for the last book in the series.

I love Heather McCollum and have been anxiously awaiting this novel about the misunderstood 4th brother of the Sinclair Clan... and I'm sad to say, this was not what I hoped it would be.

The steam was lower than usual, the connection was less compelling than usual, the adventure/romp/problems lacked excitement, and the conflict and stakes were written high, but fell short on an emotional level.

Instead of a fun romp with witty banter, this was a slow and tedious tale about a misunderstood warrior who is the feared bringer of Death, who meets a desperate lass, with some problems, that he falls for because every other person in the world is afraid of him, and because she doesn't know who he is, she just sees him for the super hottie that he is. Sigh. She falls for him pretty easily. He falls for her... there's a not very interesting complication where he's known for being the bringer of death and she's a midwife, so bringer of life... but otherwise there's a plot against her sister, that spills on to her, but I was never worried that she was in real peril or that the Sinclair bros wouldn't get her and her sister out of it.

There's a lot of time is spent on animal care, birth descriptions (gross), a muddy cow rescue, a kidnapping, a subsequent rescue, and finally professions of love, and a marriage.

The The Devil of Dunakin Castle, was a similar tale, but had a more exciting pace and set of problems.

I'm not rating it, because as I said, I love Heather McCollum and love that so many others are loving this novel and want her to keep writing. I hope that she finds her way back to the fun of Highland Conquest if there are more in this series.

I may need more executioner heroes in my HR after this one because Bàs Sinclair is the cinnamon roll who could also kill you hero of my dreams.

This is a book I plucked out of the middle of a series with no prior knowledge of any of the characters and their backstories and this book still worked for me. There are four brothers who are characterized as the Four Horsemen by their dad. Sweet squishy animal loving Bàs is given the unfortunate title of Death since his mother died delivering him. Sadness.

Shana’s sister got knocked up by her lover since her abusive and impotent husband couldn’t get the job done. But after delivering her son, asks Shana to take the baby and run because abusive and impotent husband is mega scary and wants to hurt her and the baby. Shana does as her sister begs and finds herself on Death’s doorstep. But she doesn’t know Bàs is an executioner, she just thinks he’s crazy animal loving sensitive guy and Obvs they need to make out.

There’s a lot going on in this story politically. Wars and clans clashing and blah blah blah. That aspect of the story dragged for me, but overall I enjoyed this book and the twist at the end that I appreciated. The romance is really great and I just loved Bàs and Shana. Poor man just needed someone to be like HEY BRO! Forgive yourself! And I loved Shana’s patience and kindness that helped him get there 🤧

This book was given to me by the publisher. Review is my own

Executioner, Family, Beasts, Magnificent Romance
Fantastic from the start. I can't say enough about this story other than it is magnificent in every way you can imagine. A blockbuster story that is like a whirling carousel meets a turbo charged roller coaster ride.
The characters are thrilling. Bas is incredible. How can you not love a strong highland warrior who loves animals? I fell in love with him myself. He will stay in my dreams for a long time. This thrilling sensitive story with stay with me forever.
Shana who is a midwife with wonderful skills that had my tummy gripping right along with some of the many babies that arrive, and her time in the dungeon is heart pounding terrifying.
I will say this might be the best gripping beautiful love story I have read in a long time or maybe ever.
The animals, the emotions Bas went through growing up with an abusive father, the horrible villain, the fantastic family, and so much more.
This book would make a blockbuster movie with the 4 Horsemen and all of the family of warriors and the wonderful animals.
Special mention goes to Betty the squirrel, Beo the wolf, Aunt Merida, and Hamish's burial scene which made me cry.
As you can see, I would give this story more than 5 stars if I could.
Suggestion: Ladies get out your fans.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy for my honest opinion.
A fantastic story that gave me several hours of enjoyment.

This is the fourth book in the Son's of Sinclair series. I have not read any of the other books in the series, but I feel you can go straight into this book. This is my first Heather McCollum book, and I can't wait to go back and read the other books in the series. I'm sure this book would be even better if you have read the other books, since the brothers and their wives are a big part of this book.

Bas is an executioner in 16th century Scotland. His father named him Bas, which means death. Each of his sons was raised to be the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. Bas was forced to be the Horseman of Death, even though he was a sweet and tender-hearted child. His father blamed him for his mother's death since she died giving birth to Bas. He started training Bas to be death at 5 years old. This was so heartbreaking when you see what a kind soul he has, but lives apart from his family and how everyone is scared of him.

He rescues Shanna from a pack of wolves when she is trying to save her sister's newborn baby from her husband. Bas takes her in for the night, and they share a sweet kiss. However, she needs to go back to help her sister. Bas ends up going to execute a supposed child murderer, but it is Shanna.

I absolutely loved Bas. He is such a cinnamon roll hero. He takes care of a lot of different animals. You have to love a man who is big, strong, and a badass, but loves and nurtures animals. There are so many sweet scenes with his wolf, squirrel, horses, and cows.

This book had a beautiful love story with interesting plots. There is a lot of action, a deeper look into the family, and political intrigue. Shanna helps Bas realize he is more than death and that he deserves love.

I do wish there was more spice, but it just might not be Heather's style. It was still a beautiful story, and I can't wait to read the brothers' books, as well as their sister's.

Does Bas, the Horseman of Death have a soft side? Will a woman ever love him? I am so glad that Bas got his own story so that we can see beyond that Skull mask.

This book is a bit about opposites. Bas is the executioner and Shana is a Midwife helping bring life into the world. Shana helps her sister's newborn son by running away from the evil Oliphant Clan Chief. Bas helps rescue her and the baby from a pack of wolves in the wood.

Can Bas and his Sinclair siblings keep Shana and her family safe? During all the time with Shana, it is nice to see Bas really open up to her. Can't blame him for having a bit of a complex in being blamed for so much death, but he really loves his animals since they treat eachother better than people. Of course, just like the previous books, the romance gets pretty firery when life and death merge.

This could be read as a stand-alone, but I really enjoyed seeing all the family again in this book. I hope Hannah finally gets her own book soon!

If you know me, you know that I 100% dropped everything, cancelled my plans, and skipped a school project so I could finally read Bas (Death's) story. I have to tell you it did not disappoint. 5 star read all the way!

Bas Sinclair is the youngest of the four Sinclair brothers, whose father went mad and decided to raise them to be the four horsemen right out of the bible. Each book you get more information from each brother about what that was like for them and the struggle now to find their own paths. There couldn't have been a better heroine for Bas in Shana. Shana is a midwife, who sees the love and life in the world, while Bas sees the evil and death within the world of man. I loved how through the dual POV you really got to know Bas and understand what is has been like for him his whole life, being Death, and the loneliness that comes with it.

While these books can be read as stand alone, you are doing yourself a disservice if you don't read the whole series so far in order. All the brothers and their wives come into play with each book, building a deeper world for you to fall in love with.

This is an excellent tale of hopelessness turned toward hope, despair giving way to a chance at something more, and love for a man who so richly deserves it. Bàs might be known as Death, but Death isn’t always dark and evil and scary. After all, all that dies makes way for the next thing to live, and this man is far more adept at ushering both the exiting and the arriving on this earth than anyone would imagine.

Bàs and Shana have a bit of an odd first meeting, then a near disastrous second one. And yet, she’s not afraid. She sees the lost boy in his eyes. The child who only wanted love and acceptance, yet was saddled with guilt from the start. Shana is strong and smart, though, and she’s been on the other side of Bàs’s misery, so she can give him some peace and logic that no one else has so far in his life. But while their love grows, someone wishes to destroy everything and they’ll stop at nothing to accomplish their goal.

Enjoy this trip through the past. And the love that balances war. Even the humor that comes with sadness and grief. Because these two and their families manage to deliver a story I didn’t want to put down!

4.5 stars.

This was hands down my favorite book of this series. I adore a hero who’s tough on the outside but a cinnamon roll on the inside and shockingly, Bas delivered that here. His role as executioner for his clan has made him feared and caused him to live a life of exile, even stilting his relationship with his brothers. He had experienced so much hurt and rejection from the time he was a child, and it was so nice to see him finally be seen and accepted by someone. Shana was a perfect foil for Bas, even if it did take her a bit to come to terms with what he was and accept all the parts of him. I loved seeing their relationship develop and his unwavering determination to protect her. Even better was that she was just as protective of him.

When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death…

Bas' Sinclair and Shana's story is one full of action, suspense, love, sorrow, new life, and death.

Old Chief George Sinclair loved power, wealth, and his wife Alice. He felt Scotland was his with his son's behind him, because they would represent the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse! When his precious wife died giving birth to their 4th son, the Chief went a little mad! Declaring Bas', meaning death, as the Horseman of Death since he felt his birth killed his mother.

I'm not going to put any spoilers in my review because I don't want to ruin it for anyone, especially people following this series. But what I do have to say, is that this is the best book in this series! My emotions were everywhere. I was sad, I laughed (Especially where Joshua is concerned), I cried, and I cheered! Bas' was not Death even though that's what he grew to believe. Thanks to Shana's trust and belief in his honor, which she did question with him being an executioner, he became the person he always was inside. With his brothers and sister, and especially Beo and his beast friends standing tall beside him!

This is the 4th book in the Horsemen of the Highlands series by Heather McCollum. You get to see all of your favorite characters back in action, and maybe some new additions too!

Bàs Sinclair finally learns he can be more than just the Horseman of Death in Highland Beast . The quiet and somber youngest Sinclair brother stole my heart from the first Sons of Sinclair story and I was so excited to read his book. And who else could be a match for a man they call Death than a midwife who brings life into this world?

Shana Drummond doesn’t fear Bàs and doesn’t buy into all the whispers that his touch can kill. Shana has known death, heartbreak, and fear but she has survived. On the run and desperate to save her sister and nephew, she finds refuge with Bàs. Shana is strong, smart, and determined, but even she can use help sometimes. And Bàs…the poor man was raised since childhood to be Death, to be feared, to be a monster. He hides away from the world that would shun him, more at home among the beasts. I adored Bàs who was kind, considerate, and so tortured it could break your heart. Shana sees the true man for all he is and won’t stand for him treating himself as a monster when he’s got a heart of gold. They made a good match and I liked when they were alone together because we got to see their chemistry.

I struggled with rating Highland Beast because there’s a lot I like about the characters. Bàs and Shana make a good couple, but I would have loved more time for them to explore and develop their relationship without the interference of others. As much as I love the Sinclair family, they tended to take over the page. When you add in Shana’s sister and the plotline involving her evil husband and a baby in danger, not to mention politics, intrigue, and accusations of witchcraft, then you have so much going and so many vocal characters that it pulls focus from our less flashy protagonists. The story moved more slowly than I’m used to from Heather McCollum, which was a pity since I was so excited for Bàs to get his happily ever after. At the end of the day, I liked Highland Beast but didn’t love it. I was looking for the spark I so enjoy in McCollum’s writing, along with more focus on the central characters.

This was an interesting read due to the different elements that the author added to the story. I find that most historical romances follow a couple of general formats, and while this one did as well, it also threw in some different elements that made it stand out from other historical romances. These differences will help me remember this one when other stories details fade. That being said, it still felt like something was missing from the story to keep it from being a really good read - or maybe it wasn't what was missing, but what was added? Some details seemed slightly out of place for the time period that the story was taking place.

I give it 3 stars.

5 Stars! Heather McCollum has absolutely killed it yet again! I read this book in less then 2 days! This entire series is amazing and I HIGHLY recommend it, especially if you like historical Scottish romance. This book is number 4 in the ‘Sons of Sinclair’ series and can be read as a standalone but is better if you read the series in order. I’ve been waiting for this brothers story and I’m not a patient person! This books main characters are Bás & Shana. I always felt bad for Bás, being the executioner and Horseman of Death. Shana was a wonderful, strong female main character, exactly what Bás needed and I easily fell in love with both of them. The last book in this series is the often forgotten sister Hannah and I can’t wait!! Sexy, powerful, strong Scottish warriors. Smart, strong and capable Scottish women. Fighting, battles, babies, animals, witches, hot ‘sexy times’, brotherly love, with a smile inducing HEA ending. 100% MUST READ SERIES!! Trust me, you’ll thank me! (And, you’re welcome!)

I didn't like this penultimate volume of the series at all, and in fact I don't even know if I will read the one about Hannah. Trivial characters, ridiculous story, in short, meh, and to think that I liked these four brothers of the apocalypse quite a lot at the beginning....

Questo penultimo volume della serie non mi é piaciuto per niente e infatti non so nemmeno se leggerò quello su Hannah. Personaggi banali, storia ridicola, insomma, boh, e pensare che questi quattro fratelli dell'apocalisse all'inizio mi piacevano parecchio....

This is an awesome story! Everything that'd you want in a Scottish romance: a sensitive, hunky hero; a caring, capable heroine, action, humor, and an interesting storyline. Bas is perfect! You won't want to say goodbye to him when it's over. Hopefully, we get to see him in the next book!

Highland Beast
Sons of Sinclair #4
Heather McCollum
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Bàs Sinclair has always been the cold and brutal hand of justice across the Highlands. He is the horseman of death, and he has one destiny, and that is to bring fear into the hearts of men who are guilty. But when he's called to execute a midwife for her crimes, he goes but he can't do it. For Bàs already knows this beautiful woman. Considering she gave him his first and only kiss, there is no way he can lop off her head.

Shana Drummond will do anything and everything to protect her sister Ivy and her newborn son, even if it means dying for them. Now, her cruel and merciless brother in law has called upon Bàs as the horseman of death to kill Shana for crimes that she didn't commit. Shana can't reconcile the cold, lethal warrior before her with the gentle one she met and kissed only days before.

But mercy from Bàs can only lead to one thing, and that is war. War among clans that will not only test allegiances but tear families apart and challenge everything Bàs knows about himself and his heart. Once this Highlander has known love, nothing, and I mean nothing will stop him from keeping Shana safe, even if it means destroying his own destiny in the process.

Oh my gosh, this book is phenomenal. I've been waiting for Bàs's story, and it didn't disappoint. Heather McCollum is absolutely brilliant. What a book. There was never a dull moment. It's chalked full of non-stop action. Once I started reading, I was lost. You couldn't pull me out of it if you tried. I've always liked Bàs and it seems that Shana was the perfect partner for him. I also really enjoy the fact that the rest of the family is in the book. It's like re connecting with old friends. All in all, this was an amazing book, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading historical romance. Ms. McCollum, once again, you have blown my socks off and left me in love with Bàs Sinclair. I can't wait for his sisters story.

First of all, I want to say that I freaking cannot wait for the next book which involves the only sister of the Sinclair brothers!! I know it’s going to be sooo good and hilarious!! Moving on..

This is the first time I’ve read any Highlander romance novel. And I’m glad I did! I love the fact the author Heather McCollum listed a page of Scots Gaelic/Foreign/Old English glossary to set the tone for her novel.
My heart practically broke when I read the preface! How can a father be that cruel during his long grieving? Ugh! Anyways, the story takes place many, many years ago to 1591. Imagine all that green land, fresh smells, fresh water and air. If you can, you’re there already. A young woman stumbles close by the hero’s land with a tiny babe in her arms. The lone wolf lets the hero, Bas know where the fallen woman with the babe is. Bas finds them and and takes them in. He treated her wound and helped her feed the baby which isn’t hers. Later into the night, she leaves the newborn with him, causing his quiet, peaceful, and structured life to be upturned. For years, he has lived on his land with his animals who has names (no killing animals with names:his rule) peacefully while being tormented by his past. Bas liked his life the way it is especially his job as executioner. So, his wild journey was turned upside down which ended up Bas asking for help from his older brothers and their clan in order to save the heroine, Shana and her small family. War has been declared. The villain is just an awful awful man. Oh, don’t get me started on that infamous King James VI. You thought King Henry VIII was that bad?? Oh no! James was the worst according to my memory when I was in college studying.
Anyways, this story has tugged at my heart many times over. There are kidnapping, lies, deceit, crazy brothers, babies, labors, animals with names(that’s important!) clans, accusations, iron mask, whitchcraft and many more. Will this cold hearted man learn of love and be able to love for the first time. That’s for you readers to find out! (Pssst, I keep hearing the song, everything I do, I do it for you by Bryan Adam. Very fitting, if I say so myself!)

Book Name: Highland Beast
Series: Sons of Sinclair #4
Author: Heather McCollum
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ /5

This is is probably only the second highlander type romance book I’ve read, but I’m trying to get slightly adjacent to my comfort zone and the last highlander book I read was **chefs kisses** so I thought I’d give this one a go too.

This book is part of a series of standalone books and this is the first one I’m reading, but I think it might have peaked my interest enough to go and have a look at previous books.

Bàs had a very traumatic upbringing where he and his brothers were essentially trained to represent the four horsemen, Bàs literally meaning “Death”. Luckily for us, he is actually a sweet little thing under all that killing and we get to see the softer, saving animals and making friends with giant wolves side. When Shana arrives with her little newborn nephew as they try to escape the babies father, she doesn’t know who he is or that she should be afraid.

I loved that Bàs got to experience meeting someone who didn’t already come with preconceived ideas on who and what he was. She was able to just see him as a man, not the monster he was brought up to be. Also, I am definitely annoying everyone around me as I have now started to talk like I am a highlander.

It was cute and fluffy while also giving us a lot of action and adventure as we tried to work out who was working with who and how they were going to avoid an all out civil war. Some parts were a bit cheesy, but I think that’s what make this kind of book good, yeah?

Thanks to #NetGallery and #Entangled for the free advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

*This review is based on an ARC received from NetGalley*

4.5 STARS!!!!!!!!!!!

The moment I read the word 'midwife', I knew this book was for me. I did not read the rest of the blurb. I knew I wanted to read it. (I have a particular interest in midwifery and other early practices of medicine.) So I pretty much went in blind.

Imagine my joy when this also turned out to be an absolute DELIGHT of a novel.

Set in 16th century Scotland, this is the story of Bas and Shana, two people with sad pasts, who meet when Bas' pet wolf saves Shana and a baby from non-pet wolves. What follows is a whole bunch of adventure and romance! Peppered with humorous dialogue, lots of yearning and a saucy squirrel, Highland Beast is a captivating read.

Now. Let's come to the best part of this book. AKA Bas Sinclair.
So, you know that graph with 'looks like a cinnamon roll' etc, right? On that graph, Bas would be dead center. He looks like he could kill you (scars and thunderous expression and huge man in width and length and ahem, male-parts), could actually kill you (trained to be 'death' since age 5) BUT GUESS WHAT he is actually a cinnamon roll, himbo-ish, virgin-adjacent giant of a man who has read books on how to pleasure a woman and saves and names animals on a regular basis.
He is basically a mixture of a farmer and a hit man. What a dreamboat.

Shana is magnificent, too. She tries to drug Bas like five hours after meeting him (with good reason, of course.) Total boss babe.

The book has amazing writing, an engaging plot and great characters! And the chemistry between Bas and Shanna - phewwwwwww*fans self*.Their banter is adorable, and the sex scenes are juicy and luscious! The book also offers a great view of midwifery in the 16th century, all intermingled with a riveting romance, which I loved!

My thanks to the author, the publishers and NetGalley for the ARC!
PS - I need to read Hannah's book SOON.
