The Payback

Sage

Three years ago, the Mafia murdered my first love and shattered my chance of happiness. I won’t stop searching for the gunman until justice is served, even if every step toward the killer is a step into the gaping jaws of Philly’s notorious underworld.

If only the new guy in my building, AKA Mr. Tall, Dark, and Annoyingly Alpha, would leave me and my secrets alone. My body might want him, but my head knows better. I’ve lost too much to risk giving my heart away again, especially to someone as deliciously tempting as Brandon Lewis.

When the Mob catches on to my revenge plans and delivers a deadly ultimatum, my persistent new neighbor discovers we share a common enemy. Brandon might be an incredibly skilled hacker, but why isn’t he scared of taking on the most dangerous men in the city? And how does a computer geek get the body of a warrior, bullet scars and all?

Teaming up with the fierce, overprotective man next door becomes a proposition too appealing to resist. Except the more I get to know Brandon, the more I realize he’s the last person I could let pay for my foolish mistakes. If it happened again, neither of us would survive.

“Sage”—he shook his head— “you shouldn’t look at me like that.”

His voice dropped an octave and echoed off the marble tiles.

“Like what?” The words were barely a whisper.

“Like if I kiss you right now, you won’t push me away.” His thumb traced lazy circles over the apple of my cheek. “Like if I carry you to the bed, strip you naked, and put my mouth on all the places I’ve been dreaming about, you won’t stop me.”

The Payback is a romantic suspense novel about Sage, a woman healing from the traumatic events of a mafia drive-by shooting that left her boyfriend dead on the sidewalk next to her, and Brandon, an ex-military special ops hacker searching for the people who trafficked his sister.

Already, the synopsis should give you the impression this book was heavy. I wasn’t expecting the mental health rep and trauma in this book. While it’s not that long, I felt it dragged in places because it is a slow burn romance and they do a lot of hacking/cyber stuff in this book. There was definitely action, heat, and plot, but I just felt like it was slow in parts and I had a hard time keeping my attention throughout reading.

Sage is bad ass, though. While she is healing from the loss of her boyfriend and plotting her revenge, I felt like the “grumpy” side of her was a little to pervasive. I found myself thinking that she was insufferable for like 70% of this book. But, when she shut it down, I really enjoyed her character.

Sweet, caring, protective Brandon 🫶 I loved him so much. He was supportive but also let Sage do things on her own. There was minimal controlling for an “alpha” mmc, which was definitely refreshing.

The villain didn’t get a lot of page time which was kinda sucky. The climax was totally entertaining and let me tell you there’s definitely payback. 😉

🛡️ Audiobook Review: The Payback

Series: Team Zulu Book 2
Genre: Military Romance / Romantic Suspense / Mafia
Narrators: Kai Kennicott and Stephen Dexter

🦸🏼‍♀️ Heroine Spotlight: Sage Allen

Sage Allen isn’t just a survivor—she’s a woman forged in fire. After losing her boyfriend Kieran to a mafia drive-by and nearly dying herself, Sage emerges with a singular mission: justice. With the police compromised and the FBI dragging its feet, she takes matters into her own hands. Balancing her criminal justice thesis and a Justice Department internship, Sage is no amateur. But guilt gnaws at her—she blames herself for Kieran’s death, all because of a detour to a rare bookstore in a dangerous neighborhood. Her vow? Never fall in love again. Love, after all, nearly killed her.

🦸🏻‍♂️ Hero Spotlight: Brandon Lewis

Brandon Lewis is a man haunted by absence. Discharged from Team Zulu’s black ops unit, he returns to Philadelphia not for peace, but for purpose. His sister vanished two years ago, and every lead has crumbled—until now. A whisper of mob involvement reignites his hunt. Armed with hacking skills and tactical grit, Brandon infiltrates the underworld, determined to uncover the truth and exact revenge. But Philly isn’t just a battleground—it’s a graveyard of memories, and Brandon’s ghosts are waiting.

📃 Plot Pulse

When Sage and Brandon collide—literally—it’s electric. A near-death moment on a Philly sidewalk sparks a connection neither of them is ready for. Both are emotionally barricaded, driven by vengeance, and allergic to vulnerability. Yet fate has other plans. Their targets overlap, their missions intertwine, and when Sage’s pursuit puts her in danger, Brandon steps in—not just as a protector, but as someone who understands her pain. Their chemistry simmers beneath layers of trauma, mistrust, and reluctant hope.

💘 What Hit Home

• The motorcycle scene? Cinematic and gut-punching. Sage’s PTSD flashback and Brandon’s instinctive rescue felt raw and real.
• Loved the continuity with the previous book—seeing events unfold through Sage and Brandon’s eyes added emotional texture and narrative depth.

🧐 What Fell Flat

• Sage’s emotional resistance dragged a bit. Her constant denial of her feelings—even mid-relationship—felt repetitive. The “will this make things weird?” refrain started to wear thin.

🎧 Narration Notes

Dual narration by Kai Kennicott and Stephen Dexter brings Sage and Brandon to life. Kai’s voice is expressive and engaging, even if her male character tones blur slightly. Stephen’s deep, resonant delivery is a standout—he’s one of my go-to male narrators for a reason.

📝 Final Takeaway

This audiobook blends grit, grief, and slow-burn romance with a pulse-pounding plot. Sage and Brandon are two broken souls chasing justice—and maybe, accidentally, healing. If you love emotionally complex characters, mafia intrigue, and a dash of reluctant romance, this one’s worth the listen.

Oh Brandon you have my heart ❤️

This is book 2 of the Team Zulu series but it can be read as a stand-alone, part of the story does run alongside book 1 but like I said you can just pick this up and get straight into Brandon & Sage’s suspenseful scorching journey to HEA/HFN.

This is a reverse grumpy/sunshine, romantic suspense storyline.

Sage is determined to find a killer that took her first love from her, when her heart was broken 3 years ago, she became so obsessed on finding justice and not putting herself in a position for her heart to be broken again that when a sexy mysterious new neighbour moves in she’s not ready for the feelings this brings.
I adored her roommate Lettie she was a blast! She was the light to Sage’s darkness, and how Lettie spoke to Brandon aka “muscles” was hilarious.

Brandon is keeping secrets to who he truly is, when Sage needs help. Brandon steps up, but he has a battle on his hands. I would have jumped Brandon bones very early on in the friendship, he was lovely, and at times I was shouting at the book for Sage to open herself up to him and what they were feeling.

It was great to see the grouchy but loveable Shep from book 1, this is building into a very good series, I’ve adored both book 1 & now book 2, can’t wait for the next one! This author has gone straight into my auto buy list!

Highly recommend 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I usually don't read Romantic Suspense much but when I saw the blurb to The Payback I was intrigued. Brandon and Sage were a great combination. I enjoyed the reverse Grumpy/Sunshine trope and the fact that Brandon was a hacker.

Overall this story was good. It was suspenseful and sexy and definitely a slow burn. I'm glad I gave this author a try! I'm so excited to try more from this author in the future! 4 stars! ~Ratula

3.75 stars--THE PAYBACK is the second full length instalment in Julie Weaver’s contemporary, adult TEAM ZULU romantic suspense series focusing on the former members of an under cover Black Ops Unit known as Team Zulu. This is security specialist/IT hacker Brandon Lewis, and Sage Allen’s story line. THE PAYBACK can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

NOTE: Some of the events of THE PAYBACK cross over with, and run parallel to some of the events in book one THE HIT.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Brandon and Sage) THE PAYBACK focuses on the take down of the Wolf Street Mafia. Three years earlier Sage Allen’s boyfriend was gunned down in a drive by shooting, a shooting Sage attributed to the Wolf Street Mafia. In the hopes of taking down the people responsible Sage changed her major in college, and spends her free time stalking the Wolf Street Mafia. Meanwhile security specialist Brandon Lewis is on the hunt for the people responsible for the death of his sister, a hunt that crosses over with our story line heroine. When Brandon reluctantly agrees to work side by side with Sage Allen, neither one had any idea how that their partnership would result in a future relationship both personal and professional. What ensues is the building relationship between Brandon and Sage, as our couple work together to take down the Wolf Street Mafia.

Brandon Lewis is desperate to stop the human trafficking ring organized and run by the the Wolf Street Mafia but when his new neighbor Sage Allen is swept up in the chaos of the ongoing investigation, Brandon fears for her safety, and pulls our heroine into the take down of the people involved. Sage is a strong, independent and worthy ‘opponent’ for our story line hero, a woman who has prepared herself for all eventualities except falling in love.

The relationship between Brandon and Sage begins as neighbors but Brandon never expected to find the Wolf Street Mafia sitting at Sage’s front door. Sage’s stalking by the Mafia has been discovered, and our heroine is about to pay the price for sticking her proverbial nose where it doesn’t belong. Sage isn’t prepared for her attraction to Brandon Lewis but Brandon becomes a means to an end as Sage continues to hunt for the people who killed the man she once loved. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate and intense.

We are reintroduced to fellow member of Team Zulu Hitman Elias ‘Shep’ Shepherd, as well as FBI Special Agent Maya Williams, the new head of the Wolf Street Mafia Dante Moretti, and his right hand man Maxim Orlov.

THE PAYBACK is a story of power and control, revenge and payback, friendships, relationships, acceptance and love. The premise is captivating and intriguing; the romance is seductive; the characters are determined, charismatic and dynamic.

I started this book first and it starts with a woman looking for the person who killed her boyfriend years ago in a drive-by shooting. It also left her with scars both physically and mentally. This all works for her until a guy by the name of Brandon moves into her apartment building and not only becomes attracted to her but wants to find out more about her. When she is caught spying on the club the mafia boss makes her work there. Now Brandon becomes more intensified in his searching and trying to get closer to her. It is not until Shep and Alesha come dragging in that I decided to go and find the first book and read that to find out what happens. When coming back to this one I still was not disappointed you do get some closure between the two main characters but you know there will be more. Overall a good story. I received this book from Netgalley.com

Oh Julie Weaver what a tale you weave! I absolutely devoured this gem of a story!

The Payback had the perfect blend of everything I love in a romantic suspense (i.e. suspense, action, alphas, twists and turns), but this one had something extra, it had Brandon.
Yes! He's the opposite from our man Shep from 'The Hit' but... Good Lord this man is just as lethal for hearts and panties.
He's smart, sexy, sweet, humorous, playful, damn swoon-worthy and a seriously protective badass alpha. I could not have adored him anymore!

I also loved the reverse grumpy/sunshine twist. Brandon is all open, sweet, playful, and Mr wears his heart on his sleeve, while Sage can be a little grumpy and closed off.
So.... At times I wanted to say move over sister I'll take EVERYTHING this man is offering, but as her story unfolded I understood why she is/was the way she is.
And.... Sadly I must admit these two together together are such a badass force to be reckoned with. The chemistry was undeniable and the banter at times was hilarious. Love them and I hope to see them pop up in future books.

Both Brandon and Sage have demons which ached my heart. Sage has a strength you can't help but admire, and damn the girl has some fight.
I loved these two teaming as the they strive for some 'payback' against those who have left them both with heavy hearts.
Another absolutely amazing story from Julie Weaver!
I can't wait for Book 3!

I Highly Recommend! No spoilers here, simply dive in and enjoy the ride.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟5-Star Adventure!!

Just when I thought she couldn't top The Hit, Julie came back swinging with The Payback and I loved every moment of Brandon and Sage's wild ride. This book had it all-- a sexy, former military hero with a touch of delicious hacker-geek chic, a feisty heroine, danger, banter and a whole lot of steamy tension. I'm loving everything about Team Zulu and can't wait to read Kane's story next!! 😊

This was fun, but also completely fantastical (truly some scenes were utterly bonkers)!

So the first 1/5 of the book is the Brandon/Sage recap of Book 1 (The Hit). Then boom massive bad news bears mafia plot, LOTS of internal monologues (kinda repetitive), some thrown-in sex scenes, lots of guilt (understandable), then some more mafia takedown, then the end.

It was just all so climatic without much fluidity. Basically, it felt rushed, like everything felt so rushed.

So yeah, it was fun, but definitely not better than the first book. I'm gonna read book 3 because I have a feeling that Kane will be hot as sin. So here's hoping!!

Readers: You do need to read this series in order.

I absolutely adored this book. It was full of drama, suspense, action and intrigue, built around a captivating storyline. I gobbled it all up. As the reversed grumpy/sunshine trope is my favourite, and it’s barely ever executed well, I was worried about how it would play out. Well, it was brilliant. Brandon was both a golden retriever and an alpha male, a supportive, funny and flirty character whilst Sage was more reserved, and distant but very capable and kind. The romance between Sage and Brandon provided both heart-warming, flirty and funny moments.

Brandon didn’t have to do much to steal my heart. He was an incredibly loveable character, playful and sweet, both a nerdy guy and a flirt, but also lethal. Don’t let the sweetness fool you. He could’ve pretty much charmed the knickers off of anyone, but he only had eyes for Sage, and he made it pretty clear that he wanted her. He was a brilliant hacker and a former black-ops member, though he kept his job and his past behind closed doors. Whilst he was trying to find the people responsible for his sister’s death and ended up helping Sage, we not only found a funny and charming character, but someone protective and possessive with incredible attention to detail. He was both a golden retriever character and an alpha male. He was a gentleman and a beast in the streets and a gentleman and a beast in the sheets, He was a very well-rounded, multi-dimensional character. Is an alpha golden retriever a thing? If not, it should be. I’m sure Brandon had flaws but I’m way too biased to find them.

Brandon sighed, then rubbed his nose against mine. “I was done for the moment you gave me an unforgettable lap dance and followed it up by killing a bunch of mobsters.'"

Sage was pretty grumpy, distant and keeping her heart under heavy locks, but she was also incredibly strong, both mentally and emotionally, honed her physical strength to be able to use it if/when necessary, and still harboured a lovely, kind woman behind the broody exterior. Sage found it difficult to move on from her trauma and grief and wanted justice for her late boyfriend. With her heart broken and inability to trust, the walls she protected herself with were firmly in place. That was until Sage and Brandon crashed into each other. Literally. She was not ready to open up to the mysterious flirt across the hall, but she didn’t really have a choice when life brought them together with a little assistance from Brandon. Her personal journey and character development, the way she grew and healed, blossoming from a closed-off, guilt-filled, grieving person to being able to trust and wholeheartedly love again was brilliantly executed. Her mental and emotional strength was admirable. Although she was a bit irresponsible, it was understandable and sort of justified, trauma responses always differ after all.

“Okay. I’m ready.” She squeezed her lids shut.
“It’s a kiss, Sage. Not a visit to the dentist.”
One eye opened a fraction before closing again. “I know that. Hurry up before I change my mind.”

Sage and Brandon had amazing chemistry and their dynamic was absolutely captivating. Whilst Sage found Brandon’s flirty banter infuriating, or so she tried to act as if she did, it was pretty clear that she wasn’t completely unaffected. Even as they were basically strangers, Brandon was ready to help and support her when she needed it, though his protectiveness did stem from his own past. Whilst their romance was a slow(er) burn, even though Brandon was wearing his heart on his sleeves, it was completely understandable after all Sage needed to deal with her grief, anger, fear and acceptance before she could open up. But then Brandon trying to get closer to Sage and Sage trying to push him away created pretty entertaining scenes, funny moments and mouth-watering chemistry. I do admire Sage’s self-control though because Brandon was pretty irresistible.

“I’m not interested in playing games. This isn’t a one-night thing for me.” His gaze roamed my face. “I’m all in from here. You’re mine and I’m yours. No hiding, no pretending.”

And the spicy scenes… well, Brandon is wicked. Whilst the intimate scenes were sparse, I thought it was necessary. For how closed off Sage was, it would have been absolutely out of character for her to jump straight into bed with Brandon. But when they finally got to a point where trust wasn’t an issue anymore and Sage started to overcome her fears and guilt and opened up enough, it was absolutely brilliant. There was sizzling chemistry both in and out of the bedroom.

The plot was on the darker side with some heavy themes, but just like in the first book, the author did an amazing job of lightening the overall dark vibes. The romance and the banter definitely helped in lifting the weight of the heavier topics that needed to be discussed, but they were integral parts of the story, so it couldn’t have been swept under the rug. I’d advise checking the trigger warnings.

As for the side characters, I adored Lettie. The way she treated Brandon provided some hilarious scenes and her friendship with Sage was both warm and funny. I wish I could see more of her in the future. And the cameos we had from Shep and Cam, as this book was running parallel to the ending of the first book, fed my need for more Shep and Cam scenes. I really appreciated their presence.

The story, just like in the first book, was moving at a pretty good pace and the plot was very easy to follow. There was a healthy ratio between the inner monologues and descriptions and also the action-packed scenes. And there was a balance between the plot and the romance. When there were no action scenes to focus on, the story concentrated on the romance and the characters’ personal and joint journey. The writing style, just like in the previous book, was simple and easy to understand. As a stand-alone, that is part of a series, it focused on delivering information depending on its necessity which is why it could be read as a stand-alone without reading the previous books. However, I do believe it’s better to read them in order because it just provides more depth.

Overall, I am biased because I adored Brandon and fell in love with Sage’s character. Both are strong and capable people with so much love to give. The chemistry was there from their first meeting, and it just kept steadily growing. The romance and chemistry were captivating, and the plot was action and drama-filled. I absolutely fell in love with this book which is why The Payback got 5/5 stars from me.

Ratings of the other books in the series:

The Rescue 4/5 stars
The Hit 4/5 stars
The Payback 5/5 stars
The Heist 4/5 stars
Scarred Souls 4/5 stars
Ravaged Hearts 4/5 stars

Mid-Reading Updates!

Oh I like Brandon! I like him more than Shep in the first book so far. He is cheeky and funny. I hope he keeps it that way.

Page 89
Oh my god, Brandon really is a cheeky b@stard, and I’m here for it xD Sage on the other hand… she is supposed to be this cool chick and she is but the way she is thinking and the way she is executing things are sometimes quite irresponsible. She could do with some character development.

Page 158
“Okay. I’m ready.” She squeezed her lids shut.
“It’s a kiss, Sage. Not a visit to the dentist.”
One eye opened a fraction before closing again. “I know that. Hurry up before I change my mind.”
Lol I can’t deal with this book xD

Page 198
I can understand why Sage is pissed. Everyone reacts differently to trauma, but I feel so sorry for Brandon. That man is the epitome of patience. I just want to give him a hug!

Page 330
Oh I loved this! It had a reversed grumpy/sunshine vibe to it. Brandon’s flirty banter and Sage’s attempts at keeping a distance created brilliant chemistry. It was somewhat spicy, filled with action and romance. The pacing was spot on as the balance between telling and showing was perfect and the inner monologues weren’t overwhelming. How is this book not more popular?

Plot 5✨
Spice 4🌶️

Losing someone close to us changes us forever. This is something Sage learned the hard way. Three years ago, Sage and her boyfriend were the victims of a drive-by shooting. The shooting left Sage clinging to life but sadly her boyfriend died at the scene. Three years later the case has gone cold, and Sage feels like it was never given the attention it deserved. She gave them the perfect evidence needed to bring the killer to justice, an eagle tattoo on the shooter's arm.

At a young age, Brandon taught himself skills that would change his life forever and make him valuable to the government. Brandon has seen many horrible things that no human should have to, he has served his country keeping them safe on missions that they will never know he was a part of. However, the biggest mission he had was finding his sister when she went missing. With his skills, no one can hide from him, but he failed the one mission that was the most important. He didn't find his sister, the police in France did but unfortunately, everyone was too late.

Brandon is on a mission now to find the people responsible for the disappearance and ultimately the death of his sister.
Sage is determined to find the evidence she needs to bring the people who tore her life apart to justice, no matter the cost.
A chance encounter brings them together, but neither of them can afford weakness in the form of another person.

Will Sage's investigation finally land her in more danger than she realizes?
Can Sage overcome her grief and guilt so she can open up to the possibility of actually living her life?
How far will Brandon go to save his neighbor?
Can they crimple their enemy enough that no one has to worry about them anymore or did they bite off more than they can handle?

First off thank you to Mrs. Weaver for allowing me an arc read of this book. We were introduced to Brandon and Sage in the first book in the series and I wanted to know their story while reading that book. This book is the perfect mixture of amazing plot and steamy spice. Some of the situations that Sage and Brandon get themselves into will make you hold your breath and cross your fingers for them. I absolutely love that Sage is a badass and can take care of herself. She is Brandon's equal in every sense of the word. They both will do anything to protect each other. I think Julie did an amazing job showing how losing someone changes you and how hard it is to move forward with your life. I can't wait to see what she has in store for us in the third book.

What a rollercoaster ride!! The first book The Hit with Shep and Cam was completely addictive, I didn’t think anything could get better but holy moly people Brandon and Sage’s story will
blow you away.
I loved how The Payback started alongside The Hit, showing a different side to the story and added depth.
I loved the interaction between Brandon and Sage, bringing a light hearted aspect that just endeared them to you all the more.
Brandon is a multi-functional badass. Total alpha, protector and warrior on one hand and on the other a highly experienced tech geek.
Brandon has literally gone through hell. He’s faced the worst evil and yet he still has a light-heartedness about him. You can almost picture the twinkle in his eye with the outrageous and teasing words that leave his mouth. He’s the total opposite of Shep but as brothers-in-arms they make a fantastic team.
Sage has gone through the worst life has to offer and yet she has come through so strong she’s like a force of nature. I’m a widow myself and have to say hats off to Julie Weaver in how she dealt with and portrayed the emotions of the person left behind. It was well thought out, beautifully written and loaded with respect and care.
I think Sage doesn’t realise how strong she is. Her past is clouding her thinking but watching her slowly realise how vital she is, how righteous her actions and beliefs are. She is a true testament of strength and morality. Her wounds are hidden behind a concrete wall, as many of us do, and I too ink this made her character all the more relatable and endearing.
Together Brandon and Sage are a force to be reckoned with. Their interactions both hilarious and action packed.
This story will lead you on a rollercoaster ride you won’t forget. The characters will, without a doubt walk right into your heart and become your friends.
Absolutely brilliant read.
5 stars does not do this story justice.

This is the second standalone book in Julie Weaver's "Team Zulu" series and I am loving them, everyone should have a Brandon in their lives.
Sage Allen's life would never be the same, Kieron O'Malley, her first and only love, Kieron who held her when her mother died, Kieron who stayed by her side when her dad and her sister left, was dead, killed by the Philadelphia mafia and she was to blame, Sage would destroy them, she didn't know how but she would , all she has to go on was a picture of a tattoo.
Brandon Lewis was every girls fantasy, tall, handsome with a ripped body and sparkling blue eyes, little did he know that his zany, unexpected meeting with his new neighbour, beautiful, feisty Sage was to change his life.
Ex military special ops Brandon and criminology student Sage had a common goal, destroying Dante Moretti, son of the boss of the wealthy Italian Wolf Street mafia, the mob who had corrupted the city of Philadelphia, Brandon knew that they were responsible for abducting and murdering his sister Janie.
This book follows the magnetic attraction between Sage and Brando, an attraction that Sage wouldn't face, the fight for justice, the guilt, the corruption in high places, the special bond between military colleagues, it is action packed with edge of your seat suspense, a real rollercoaster of a ride that I didn't want to end, an ending that leaves you excited for what is to follow.
Julie Weaver has written a beautiful love story laced with danger, I love the characters of Sage and Brandon, I love the often hilarious banter between them, I love how survivor's guilt has been sympathetically approached. A great story and I look forward to the next in the series.
I received a free copy of this book and my review is voluntary.

The couple: Brandon and Sage

Romance trope: romantic suspense
Series: Team Zulu
Length: 349 pages

Plot: Sage is in her last year of studies to become law enforcement and she's still seeking justice for the killing of her boyfriend three years prior. But then she meets Brandon, her new mysterious neighbor, and suddenly she's feeling things again. But his interests dovetail with hers and they soon find themselves embroiled in the mafia world, seeking vengeance for crimes of the past.

Commentary: I had trouble connecting with Sage. I think it was because she was so angry but refused to let anyone help her. And while she was skilled in some ways, she still severely overestimated her abilities, so not letting people help her was silly and in the end, harmful to her own cause. And because of what I assume is her general personality, as well as her guilt, anger, and grief, she was not very nice to people. This was like a reverse grumpy-sunshine, and I'm not usually fond of that arrangement. I did like the drone dropping evidence for the FBI agent at the end. Unrealistic, but funny.

Previous book in the series: The Hit
Next book in the series: The Heist

Let me start this review by simply saying that Ms. Weaver KNOWS how to write a deliciously sexy leading man! I read The Hit and fell in love with Shep and his broody, morally grey self. I did not believe that Brandon could top Shep, but I willingly admit that I was wrong!

"Brandon sighed, then rubbed his nose against mine. 'I was done for the moment you gave me an unforgettable lap dance and followed it up by killing a bunch of mobsters.'"

Brandon is a man on a mission, determined to take down the mob and avenge a tragedy from his past. He is a protector, all alpha male, brilliantly smart, funny and quirky with a confidence that borders on arrogant. Sage is still dealing with the emotional fall out and turmoil from a past trauma that changed her life, and she's let that fester in an anger that is bent on revenge. Brandon realizes that he and Sage have a common enemy, and this man is willing to do anything to help Sage whether she likes it or not. Ms. Weaver wrote these characters so well, that I absolutely fell in love with Brandon but at times wanted to throttle Sage! The story and the plot are so well written that you truly feel immersed in the story from beginning to end. I loved how she ties in part of the story from The Hit, as well as Shep's appearance in this book. Overall, an excellent read and I would highly recommend reading this series! Can't wait for the next!

This is the second book in this series third if you count the prequel and at times it runs parallel to the first book "The Hit" and I do recommend that you read that book first and the prequel as well

Brandon is a team mate of Shep who starred in the hit but he is the total opposite he is not only a kickarse all alpha male but he is also a tech guru and he does it all with a smile on his face and a quick joke but one thing he never jokes about is finding the monsters who killed his sister He ends up working with his neighbour Sage who is after the same people after they killed her fiancé and destroyed her life She believes she will never love again but as the two work together they realise not only are they the perfect team for revenge but they are also the perfect team for life and love if they survive to have a future together

I was waiting for this book with great anticipation and was not disappointed at all! The Payback is the second book in the Team Zulu series by Julie Weaver. It is second to The Hit and I love how she wove the stories together at a pivotal point for each story but still maintained their stand alone capability. This book has lots of ups and downs, romance, and suspense. So glad to see some more of Shep! Will be anxiously waiting for the next book in this series! This is my true review of an ARC copy of The Payback by Julie Weaver.

Oh wow, This team Zulu series is a total must read in my opinion - especially if you like romantic suspense. I blew through this book as it was that good. Brandon and Sage were both strong and had their own personal issues they were dealing with, but together, they were the bomb! It was a slow burn, and the suspense kept the story going. I wish I can find a Brandon for myself! Totally HOT!! I received an advanced reader copy and I'm leaving this review voluntarily.

Payback with interest! Wow what a rollercoaster ride of emotions and actions. Wanting Brandon but not allowing herself was such a frustrating and emotional battle. You just wanted to slap Sage at times! Brandon is an Alpha with a heart and humor. He is just absolutely fabulous. Loved having Shep come back for support. The action, romance and suspense keeps you turning the pages. Looking forward to the next mission. Loved it! Do read it!!! True review of my ARC copy.

The Payback was a great installment to the Team Zulu series. I didn’t think anyone could beat Shep but Brandon was so witty and fun. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next installment. I also can’t wait to see what Brandon and Sage abs the rest of the team have been up too. This story kept me interested from start to finish and I love how it ties into The Hit. I’m looking forward to more books by Julie.

This one was a palette cleanser for me and out of my normal reading zone.
I was a bit bored with this one. It was far fetched, dragged a bit, and did not have me on the edge of my seat.
Brandon and Sage were fine, but I'll probably forget about them in a few days.

Three years ago, the Mafia murdered Sage's first love and shattered her chance of happiness.  Searching for the gunman she teams up with her  neighbor, Brandon who is also searching for the monsters  who kidnapped and murdered his sister.
What a kickass heroine and badass hero.
Loved Brandon & Sage. Hope there will be more.
Received an advanced copy and this I s my honest opinion.

Brandon and Sage meet my happen stance but end up sharing soo much more as the story progresses. They each are on their own journey for revenge and justice that keeps them from really exploring their feelings for each other until they really have no choice. The chemistry between these two is so thick and they are always drawn to each other. While there was romance in the story there also was a great balance of action packed moments as they both deal with the mafia and all that comes with it.

I’m an animal!!! I’m obsessed this series is pure uncut GOLD!!! Please Julie I will literally read your grocery lists please I am begging you I will read anything you write. It’s a desert out here & your books are an oasis in this bland sandy storm that is this genre. Give me that sweet crisp water that is this series.
