Why They Call It Falling

Rate this book
Formerly the wild child of three sisters, Emma Marano grew up to be a single mom working two jobs, estranged from her mother, and lying to her friends. She’d told everyone that her daughter's father wanted nothing to do with his child, but in reality, her own inability to deal with her mistakes and shame led to the biggest lie of her life. But her daughter, Haley, is all Emma has in the world, so how can she regret keeping Haley to herself? Emma’s struggling, though, and her life is slowly imploding.

Right after high school, Justin Lee broke up with Emma Marano and joined the Army, leaving her and all her drama behind.. Years later, he stumbles upon her and what turns out to be a daughter he never knew he had. Angry and confused, he insists on having a relationship with his daughter, but to do so, he’ll need to rebuild some sort of relationship with Emma, too. As he gets to know his daughter—and Emma again—he soon realizes that his biggest mistake was leaving her all those years ago. What he dismissed as drama turns out to be a serious mental health issue, and Emma needs help. Now, Justin has to decide if he can see past her flaws and forgive her lies, and together, they’ll have to work to reclaim their love and a faith in each other and in God, or they risk losing something precious in the process.

This was a sad book at first but the ending was great! This is a second chance at love story. I thought while reading this book that the 4 year old was a little more advanced than a someone her age would be. I really appreciated that this was a clean read. As in all books there are a few characters that I think readers won’t like very much.

Thank you for the ARC, Christina! I am delighted to say I am now a Christina Sinisi "completist" and have enjoyed following the Marano sisters to their happily-ever-afters. Emma Marano and Justin Lee's romance, complicated by family disapproval, Emma's grief over her father's murder, and what Justin sees as "Emma's drama," fell apart completely when Justin left for the Army. Now a chance meeting reveals all the hurt, anger, and secrets that kept these two high school sweethearts apart for five years. Desperate to co-parent a daughter he did not know he had, Justin must work to forgive Emma and forge a relationship with Haley. Frightened that Justin will try to take Haley from her, Emma must face her mistrust and hurt and ultimately the depression that has plagued her for years.

Romance authors have just begun to tackle difficult issues such as depression and other mental illnesses in addition to the usual hurts and situations that usually keep two would-be lovers apart. Handling the topic of Emma's depression with both compassion and realism, Christina does not shy away from the truth that no overnight solutions need apply. Intensive therapy, pastoral care, and lifestyle changes, usually not part of a genre often seen as "fluff," play real parts in getting Emma and Justin to a position from which they can face the obstacles to becoming a family for Haley. Their faith, and that of the author, show clearly in this story of how God can indeed work all things together for the good of those who love Him. No cheap miracles, just prayer, trust, and real assistance get Justin and Emma, at last, to their happily-ever-after.

What happens when you find out something that upsets your whole life? Are you angry, mad, sad, or happy, or maybe all of them. That is precisely what happens to Justin Lee when he finds out quite by accident that he has a four-year-old little girl with his ex-girlfriend who never told him or his family he was going to be a father. Not only that, but she let her family believe he didn't want anything to do with his baby.

I understood why Justin would be so angry with Emma Marano, but as we delve deeper into her story, there are some things that she is dealing with. The book opens up with the death of her beloved father which rocks her family's world. On top of that she blames herself which does some serious damage to her mentally and emotionally. The only one she could really talk to was Justin, who was just a teenager and when he could, he hightailed it out of their town, breaking up with her, and not looking back. Add abandonment issues on top of already escalating problems and Emma has an uphill battle to fight.

Now four years later a reckoning has come. Emma understands she must let Justin in on their little girl's life including his family. And tell her family the truth. But all is not so easy and these two must learn to forgive, become friends, and eventually love again for the sake of all involved. Their journey was both emotional and uplifting.

I was provided a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

This author does a wonderful job of handling a subject many people do their best to avoid. One of the main characters, Emma has been dealing with a mental health issue for years. Her clinical depression has been ignored or missed by family and friends alike and Emma herself has not sought out help. The reappearance of the man she has never stopped loving, her daughter’s father, is the catalyst to Emma finally getting the help she needs. Her mental health issues were precipitated by her grief over her father’s death and her breakup with Justin. Now years later, Justin discovers he has a daughter with Emma and he must work to create a new connection with both mother and daughter. Both Emma and Justin find that the love they felt years ago has not been lost, but insecurities, doubts and trust issues need to be addressed as well as Emma’s depression. Together they seek help and guidance through counselling and faith.

This book illustrates that love requires effort, courage, constant care and faith. Emma and Justin’s story is both heartwarming and inspiring. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Emma is doing everything she can to keep her life together, including taking care of her four-year-old daughter, Haley. She never expected to see her ex again, especially since he doesn’t know he is a father. When they try to work together to make the best of things for Haley, they soon discover they still have sparks between the two of them. However, Emma is hesitant to trust and give her heart to Justin a second time.

The book moved at a good pace and kept me wondering where the path might lead the two of them. I loved how the author dealt with forgiveness between others and even ourselves. The book might have triggers in regards to depression and anxiety. However, the issues are not left unresolved but rather are lovingly dealt with a godly perspective. This was my first book to read by this author and I look forward to reading more by her in the future!

I would recommend this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own and I was not required to leave a positive review.

I enjoyed the book and how the author takes a look at how one decision can change many lives. The story follows Emma as she struggles being a single parent. She works two jobs but tries to spend as much time as she can with her daughter. I thought their relationship was very special and admired Emma for the sacrifices she made to provide for her daughter. On the outside Emma seems to have it all together but she has a secret that no one knows about. On top of feeling guilty for her father’s death, she has been untruthful to everyone about the father of her child.

Justin right away became my favorite character in the entire story. He has worked hard all his life and never thought too much about Emma since high school. As you will find out in the story he runs into Emma and their world explodes from secrets that kept him from a daughter he didn’t know he had. I know Emma tried to explain her reasons for not telling him, but he has lost four precious years not being able to know her. His anger is real yet he also has grace towards Emma. I liked how he decided that getting to know his daughter was more important that fighting with Emma.

What I really liked about the story was how the author handled Emma’s struggle with depression. I know I try to hide my depression from others because I think it makes me feel weak. All this time Emma has suffered alone and hides things from her family. There is a scripture that says something like, “all things hidden will be revealed.” For Emma her lies about Justin come to the surface when everyone finds out she never told him about his daughter. It just seemed easier to her so she would not feel rejected again and as time went on, she made Haley the center of her life.

I love stories about second chances and this one is filled with an emotional rollercoaster as two people try to repair a relationship , have faith be their foundation and learn to not only forgive but trust each other. Justin’s parents add a little drama to the story as they see Emma for the first time after finding out about their granddaughter. At times I had mixed feelings about Emma but in the end, the author helps me see a different side of her that cried out for help. It is never too late to make amends and find peace when you give your burdens to God.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

Christina Sinisi had all my favorite tropes in this story. I am a big fan of secret children, and rekindling past love, and Sinisi hit this one out of the park. Emma is a sympathetic single mom trying to make ends meet when her high school sweetheart returns on Army leave and recognizes the resemblance he has to Emma's little girl. Justin broke off his three-year relationship with Emma to rebel against his family's wishes and join the military as an enlisted soldier. When he learns of a daughter's existence, he is shocked.

Justin's military honor and rekindled romance with Emma is well-done. Emma also has some baggage to overcome since the murder of her father. Will Justin's return help or hinder her health?

Little Haley is an outspoken but likeable character. She brings some sparks to the page and seeing this family reunited is wonderful.

Sinisi brings in the strength and guidance God gives His children into the storyline.

A memorable contemporary romance.

I love a second-chance story! Why They Call It Falling is a complicated, beautiful, heartwarming, redemption story. What’s not to love about that?

I sank into this story with no effort at all. I connected with Emma and empathized with her fears and concerns. But I also understood Justin’s feelings of frustration. That’s what makes their dynamic so compelling. They are both hurt characters with a shared history, and I yearned for them to find hope, healing, and a happy ever after.

I love when a story inspires me to see things in a new way or from a different perspective. One that reveals the rewards of trust, faith, and forgiveness. Emma and Justin’s story stirs the heart and touches the soul.

First Line (Prologue): “It’s better to seek forgiveness than ask permission,” Emma whispered near Justin’s ear.

Why They Call it Falling is a second chance at love story. Emma and Justin grabbed my heart, and I felt their struggles as if they were my own. Emma had so much to overcome from her past. She was so wounded, and I thought she’d never learn to trust again. Justin had matured from the boy he’d been, but he had to convince Emma that he was man enough not to run away this time. I was rooting for their HAE during the whole story, and I was especially pleased to see how their faith grew during their trials. And the beautiful Charleston setting was a bonus! You’ll love this heartwarming romance! Thanks, Christina, for sending me an ARC to read your story that should encourage and challenge each one of us.

Story Notes

This was a beautiful, sweet, fun and yet heartbreaking story to read, for all the right reasons. I loved getting to know Emma, Justin and little Haley. Christina made them come alive with a realistic air that is often hard to do. I will say this book takes some understanding to really appreciate it. A casual reader might dismiss Emma’s reactions to things as flighty or immature but if you take some time to look deeper, you’ll see that there is much more going on. I really liked the way Christina approached and handled the concept of depression caused by trauma. It was well done and made you feel not only the despair of it but also the joy of freedom when Emma finally accepted help. I definitely recommend this story for those who enjoy romance with depth and heart. You should certainly add it to your summer TBR as I know it would make a great vacation read.

Why They Call It Falling tells the story of Emma Marano and Justin Lee. High school sweethearts, Justin left Emma for life in the military. Then, years later, he discovers they had a daughter he never knew about. As a single mom, Emma struggles with the present along with things that happened in the past.

Once Justin discovers he is a father, he wants to get to know his daughter Hayley. Getting to know her involves spending time with Emma as well. I loved getting to know Emma, Hayley, Justin, Emma’s sister Tiffany and the other characters in the book.

Since my husband served in the military, I appreciated Justin serving his country. So if you enjoy books about second chances, finding family you did not know about, and having faith to try again, check out this book for yourself.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

Thank you to Christina Sinisi for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily. Emma is broken and heartbroken. The only real light in her life is her precious daughter, Haley. Justin is a career military man who broke Emma's heart. Emma is working two jobs to raise her daughter with help from her sister, Tiffany. Emma's world is rocked when she literally runs into Justin at a strawberry field with her daughter. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that Justin is the father of her child. His world is rocked with this knowledge, and he is determined to be a part of Haley's life. This was a tear jerker, but it was a beautiful story of second chances and overcoming obstacles to fight for all that is glorious in life. As I was reading this book, I literally had tears running down my cheeks in different places in this book. Christina Sinisi knows who to write a romance. It was easy to read and the characters were easily relatable to me. I felt their pain and happiness coming off of the page. This was a story of redemption, forgiveness and taking up for the underdog, as well as leaning on your faith. I could just reach into the book and pinch little Haley's cheeks! Get a tissue and find a chair and read!

I could understand Justin’s anger that Emma kept his daughter Haley a secret, but it sounds like she didn’t have the support she needed when she found out she was pregnant, except for her older sister Tiffany, and after a while it became too long to speak up. Justin was probably not mature enough to handle being a father five years ago, but the army and faith found changed him. There are plenty of rocky moments, which his so called friends, his parents, and her mother add to where I wasn’t sure if they were going make it in this YA second chance romance. Emma needed to accept that she needed help. And Justin had to realize that she wasn’t just being emotional. Little Haley was a lovable firecracker.

Another winner by Christina Sinisi! This is the 4th book I have read by this author, and I've loved every single one! The characters are endearing and well-developed. I feel like I know them personally, and I don't want the story to end. Little Haley is darling, even as her mom Emma is struggling with family dynamics, work, and personal issues - including depression and loss of faith due to life experiences. Will Justin's return be enough? I love a happy ending and I couldn't put this book down!

The author's best work so far! True to its name, it is a sweet romance that catches your attention immediately, I didn't want to put it down! It doesn't shy away from more serious themes, however, and that adds a depth to the romance that makes it more meaningful and real. Highly recommend!

This is the first book I've read by this author, and I really enjoyed it! The story is about Justin and Emma, who were high school sweethearts, and then parted ways. About 5 yrs later, Justin and Emma accidentally meet in a you-pick strawberry patch, where Justin meets his surprise four yr-old daughter. Will they be able to forgive each other and reconcile their differences to become a family of three?

The one thing that I felt was unresolved in this story was that Justin and Emma didn't confess their sin of being together before marriage to God and ask for His forgiveness.

The title grabbed me first. After reading this story, it made perfect sense.

We need more stories like these, ones that address mental health issues head-on, in this case clinical depression. These are the kind of stories that will increase empathy for those who suffer from mental illness, nudging them to get help while reducing the stigma.

Emma’s downward spiral isn’t obvious to others at first, but is gradually revealed, triggered in high school by a family tragedy. Everything about this situation rings true—Emma as a single mom, suffering alone in shame, surrounded by crazy family dynamics in the aftermath of disaster. Only her sister Tiffany stands by her side, but even Tiffany doesn’t know everything that plagues Emma.

Then there’s Justin, a military man jolted to a new reality when he discovers he has a four-year-old daughter. His promises are complicated by his military obligations—can he even keep his word? Can Emma trust him?

Justin’s parents have to deal with Emma’s fragility and their own anger and sadness over missing four years with their granddaughter. Interactions are precarious and relationships tenuous, both believable and heart-rending.

I was heavily invested in these three-dimensional, very real characters as the story rolled out with some unexpected twists and turns. Near the end, two things confused me, but I can't share those without spoiling the story. Yet they were minuscule compared to my enjoyment of this novel. I found myself equally immersed in Justin and Emma’s alternate perspectives. I understood their pain, as well as the tension between transparency and holding secrets close.

Above all, faith, hope, and love prevailed in ways I didn’t predict. The faith arc is woven in without being heavy-handed, which I appreciated.

I received an advanced copy of this book, and the review is my honest opinion.

I am a big fan of the Contemporary Christian Romance Genre. Why They Call It Falling by Christina Sinisi is the latest book in this genre that I have read. I have enjoyed a couple of other books by Christina Sinisi so I was interested in reading her new book.

Emma Marano is a single mom, working 2 jobs and her life is in shambles. She has always told her friends that her Daughter's father didn't want anything to do with her. Her daughter, Haley, is now older and Emma feels that maybe it is time for her to know her Dad. Justin Lee is Emma's old High School boyfriend and Haley's Dad. He enrolled in the Army right after high school and lost touch with Emma. He recently found Emma and he discovers he has a daughter he never knew about. Justin tells Emma he wants a relationship with Haley, but he also realizes that he has to repair his relationship with Emma. Justin soon realizes that he made a mistake by leaving Emma so many years ago as he sees how much LOVE he still has for her. Justin also realizes that Emma wasn't creating Drama, but instead has mental health issues. Will Justin be able to help Emma with her Mental Health Issues? Will Emma, Haley, and Justin become one happy family?

WOW, this book captivated me from the very first chapter. Emma is a wonderful Mom to her daughter, but also knows she is missing out on having a father in life. I really appreciate how the Author tackles Mental Health Issues in this book. Justin Lee is an outstanding character in this book. I truly love how he immediately wants to step up and be a father to Haley and knows he missed out on so many years. I enjoyed reading how Justin and Emma started to put Faith in their life and relied on God to get them through some struggles as they rebuild their relationship. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Second Chance Romance books! GREAT BOOK!

Depression is often misunderstood, especially in Christian circles. It goes beyond the emotion of sadness to trap one under a weight they don’t fully understand themselves. A person dealing with depression might be able to function only giving hints of the storm inside, or they might not be able to function at all. It’s different for everyone. Emma falls somewhere in the middle, working and raising her child but not the way she desires to. Emma’s story is complicated by the lies she’s told and the return of her daughter’s father, who knows nothing about his child. When Justin finds out about Haley, his surprise gives way to determination. He’s missed enough of his daughter’s life. He won’t miss any more. Working through the difficulties of their past and learning how to parent together, Justin and Emma are awakened to the feelings they thought were doomed to the past. But it’s not all good. There’s a lot of misunderstanding to deal with, forgiveness that needs given, and the secret of her depression looming between them. While I can’t say it’s enjoyable to be part of their ups and downs when Emma tries to hide her problems with depression, their story is one that needs told and it is enjoyable to watch Justin learn to be a father and stand beside Emma and learn to understand the things she deals with.

Why They Call It Falling is a story of forgiveness, healing, and second chances. I give it four stars. I received an ARC of this book from Celebrate Lit. The opinions and reviews are my own and freely given.

As a nurse who has worked in mental health before I really enjoyed this book. Emma was always considered flighty and full of drama. But what if what people thought were her issues and problems actually turned out to be a mental disorder that she could get help from?

Add in her ex-boyfriend who thought he’d done the right thing by saying goodbye to Emma and going off into Army. Justin comes back and runs into her. . . as well as her daughter. Surprise! That daughter just happens to be his too. Except, he’s never heard about her. He wants to spend time with her and get to know her but that also means spending time with Emma again.

As he starts to be around Emma more then he realizes that she actually suffers from a mental disorder and he sets out to get her help.

This was a great book. It read smoothly and kept me interested. I highly recommend you read it as well.

Why They Call It Falling is a heartwarming sweet contempary Christian Fiction story that is written by Christina Sinisi. The book is well written and the story line will grab your attention within the first few pages. Emma Marano was a wild child growing up. She is now a single mom who works two jobs. I can relate to Emma so much. I was a single mom of two girls by the time I was 18 years old. I worked two jobs and went to school to provide them a better life.

Emma and Haley's father, Justin Lee dated in high school. After the break up Justin went into the Army. He had NO idea that he had a daughter. He is pretty angry at first - but wants to do the right thing and step up. This is met with roadblocks from his family and friends. But The Justin from high school and the one that has found a deep Christian faith were not the same person.

The characters are well developed. It's a sweet romance. The book is 294 pages long. I have only read one other book by this author - and I will be on the lookout for more of her work in the future. Thank you to the author, publisher and Celebrate Lit for allowing me to read a copy of this book - all thoughts are my own.

Why They Call It Falling is the third book of the Summer Creek series. With each book, author Christina Sinisi seems to get better—deeper characters and better writing. Emma, the middle sister, was somewhat the villain in the first book. She was off to the side in the second book, but here we finally understand why she seemingly abandoned her daughter in Christmas Confusion. The fact that Emma is struggling with guilt over her father’s death and still suffers from depression over his loss years later differentiates this novel from a stereotypical romance.
Haley is back—Emma’s daughter—and she charms your socks off.
Justin goes from maybe not so nice when he finds out he has a daughter he didn’t know existed—and who could blame him for being furious—to being a real hero.
I actually got teary-eyed in the big romantic moment. I will go back and reread those pages again and again.
I highly recommend this book if you want to read about a grown-up, sweet romance that inspires your faith in God a bit again.

Awesome read!! This book offers so many great themes to ponder: the pain of losing a parent at a young age, dealing with the consequences of youthful mistakes, rejection by those we love, the unfortunate stigma of mental illness, and the need for God's direction in life.

Sinisi handles these themes with compassion and grace in this beautiful story. I especially love her ability to portray how a child thinks, and Haley's antics brought welcome levity to this sometimes deep story. Being from the lowcountry of South Carolina, I especially loved the references to local landmarks.

Will Emma and Justin rekindle their early friendship, or will the years of abandonment destroy their future? Read this book and find out! I loved it! Great work, Christina!

Oh this was a really good read. Emma’s drama as Justin thought of it was more than he realized. This is a second chance romance with some tough issues tackled. I like the way the author handled it it wow some of it was heavy.

Justin and Emma’s daughter did need both her parents. I liked that the issues the couple faced were entirely realistic and hard to think about. Just a wonderful read that hooked my emotions.

Why They Call It Falling by Christina Sinisi is a beautiful second chance love story that kept me engaged and turning pages. Emma’s crippling guilt and depression have caused her to turn from God and make poor choices and cover up those choices with lies. Her struggles are raw and honest and very relatable. Her inability to trust Justin when he reappears in her life is heartbreaking. Justin is the perfect, swoony hero: romantic, forgiving, loving, and patient, helping her see her need for Christ as well as Christ-centered counseling. A very enjoyable read that beautifully points to Christ.

This conclusion to the Summer Creek series was worth reading.

There was the element of the heroine's depression, but there was also much light and humor. The love story between the two main characters will stay with me for some time--the hero was a true hero, a man a real woman could love.

I highly recommend this book and all of Christina Sinisi's books.
