The royal family of Antarctic empire isn’t exactly close.
Emperor Philza is always occupied; Tommy hasn’t seen Techno in months, and even if Wilbur is here, in the capital, their relationship can be described to be strained at best.
The royal family doesn’t need to be close, however, it only needs to be balanced, like the pillars holding the country above their heads – as long as they are strong and steady, the Empire will be too. It’s the principle that held Tommy’s back straight and his shoulders broad through the years of hardships and trials of errors; through yet another formal meeting where his father’s gaze would look past him and where his brother’s words would be filled with poison that makes the deepest parts of his soul ache.
At that time, Tommy couldn't know that his family would find a replacement for him in the face of a commoner boy named Ranboo.
Butterfly Reign is beyond amazing. Spectacular, Legendary, Immaculate, Sublime, and all the positive remarks and accolades conceivable in the english language. There is never a dull moment, never a wasted scene; each paragraph drips with beautiful prose and masterful storytelling. Butterfly Reign is the BEST story I have ever experienced, and I promise you it is worth your time.
Now, let's get into detail. (warning, some potential spoilers? dont worry i keep it vague and insignificant)
~ The Characters ~
Characters, characters, characters. There are many stories out there where a lot of the characters are lackluster in writing or execution, or just downright underused/underdeveloped (MHA, Harry Potter, PJO, just to name a few) – and a couple select stories where not a single character is wasted (One that comes to mind is Arcane) – Butterfly Reign is one in the latter. Every focal character has a well written personality, background, and a purpose and role in the grander plot. I shall go in depth for some of my favorites:
br!Dream - Dream is my favorite character. His sharp wits and cunning behavior, and the way his character is executed, create the perfect antagonist kept me pondering the question: "Does Dream actually have evil motives?" Dream is an utter joy of a character to read; from his antagonistic introduction, to his dynamic with the main character, and the gradual decay of his "villainous" mask.
br!Tommy, or better known as Theseus - The best main character ever written. From his goals, his grievances, his grudges, his strengths, and his perfectly sensible flaws. If Dream made me ponder the aforementioned question, Theseus made me ponder: "Is Theseus a good person I should root for that he succeeds?" Theseus is a sympathetic and understandable character, but his flaws and ugly traits are just as significant as his tragicness. But perhaps the most interesting thing about Theseus, is his different dynamics with all the other characters. Each one unique and captivating in their own ways, which also helps flesh out how perfectly written Theseus is as a main character.
br!Techno - The character I relate to the most. His backstory-interlude was one of the heaviest chapters for me to read – not only as a complete revelation of his tragic character, but also because of all the struggles he had that I found myself relating to. But personal connections aside, Techno still is a truly great character. Similarly to Theseus, you cannot ignore his shortcomings, but completely understand his motivations.
~ Plot ~
Butterfly Reign is already a strong character-driven story, but what about its plot? The grand scheme? Well, it is just as amazingly written. A family drama where all the family members are struggling with their intertwined grudges born from faults and tragedies of the past, while also struggling with the present tides of royal and empirical politics.
The plot is like watching a chessboard with more than two players. Each character has a motivation set (whether disclosed or undisclosed), and each player has significance to the game. Dream, Phil, Theseus, Wilbur, Quackity, Ranboo; the intricacy of it all keeps you on your toes.
I'd want to say more, but I really cant without going into heavy spoilers lmao
~ Other remarks ~
The dialogue is amazing as well. Not a single conversation is boring, and there are some gripping lines and quotes to discover. This also goes will with the author's writing style – which is also amazing. And with the writing and dialogue combined, it creates a really immersive reading experience that makes it fun to go through a medieval and fantasy world with Fae and Avians.

So to conclude all this, Butterfly Reign is AWESOME go READ IT NOW even if youre not in the fandom. its worth it. i promise.
