In the near future the world is starving. There are too many people and not enough farm land. In a desperate move to survive, humankind sends a spaceship to the nearest habitable planet in an attempt to open a wormhole gateway with unproven technology and establish a farming colony. Everything goes horribly wrong. The gateway kills most of the people that try to use it. Only non-living cargo can make the Passage.
The crew is stranded forever but manages to produce some food crops. To salvage the situation a well meaning bureaucrat advocates building advanced robots with artificial intelligence to aid in the food production. But humans have a bad history with AI robots.. Will this time be different?
My books do not always fit into established genres - most of them have elements of sci-fi, mystery, crime, action, and especially - romance. I will warn that my idea of 'romance' is not typical, but more along the lines of strong women and men making sacrifices for them.
While my books are not a series in any sense of the word, many are connected through characters and events. I will also say I strive for realism and logic. My books are never fantasy, but rooted in what is actually possible,
I invite you along for the ride and hope it will be memorable.
This near-future sci-fi tale starts with a wonderfully visceral piece of description and continues with a lot of interesting and intriguing ideas all wrapped up in an engrossing story. I found that I was holding my breath at some parts, anticipating, with a little dread, what direction events would take. Twists and turns along the way kept me reading to find out how the story would end up.
I enjoyed the characters' exploration of some philosophical concepts and moral dilemmas - all solidly pertinent to the story. And I appreciated the inclusion of technical details, like the description of a fuel cell and how it works. Such details were just enough to inform without being so much as to overwhelm the story. The writing is pleasantly conversational, and the story moves along at a good pace. While I noticed a few typos, which caused some brief confusion at times, mostly they did not impact my immersion in the story.
Overall, this sci-fi tale is thought-provoking; it speaks to some concerns of today and projects a realistic potential future. It's an engaging read, well worth picking up!
The author has a lovely writing style. I was hooked from the start and I kept reading till the very end. I love science fiction but it was hard for me to find a new one that is up to my standard of a good book. This one covered all my expectations and more. I highly recommend REX, I believe a true sci fi fans will appreciate it. The world building was nicely written, the author successfully created the apocalyptic sense. I enjoyed this book and I'm rating it with 5 stars.
It is scary how realistic that sounds... if we keep doing what we're doing now I think at some point in the future there will be the need for the human kind to try find another habitat. The book is interesting and the characters are well developed. I liked the story, no matter how scary it is to think that this might happen some day. I recommend the novel, it is worth your time and money.
