Great thriller. Pen Wilkinson is an out-of-work lawyer sitting on pins and needles in Minneapolis, waiting for a phone call telling her she’s been hired as a prosecutor by the U.S. Attorney’s in Los Angeles. While she waits, she is sucked into investigating the brutal murder of a homeless person in South Minneapolis. That case connects to a deeper case of corporate fraud, international cartels, intimidation, and more murders. On top of it all, Pen is a gutsy paraplegic who drives her wheelchair into places and situations most people try to avoid—if they care about their safety. As each scene unfolds, Pen goes after her foes with dogged determination from one twist to another, and the tension builds unrelentlessly to a final edge-of-your seat climax.

In addition to the carefully crafted plot, this story brings many pleasures to the reader. We learn a lot about corporate intrigue, about the Minnesota landscape, about how to get yourself free if someone binds your wrists with tie strips. Above all, we learn about the life of the homeless, as seen through the eyes of Pen, who cares deeply about them.

Kudos to Brian Lutterman.
