Anh Do is a comedian, artist and also one of the highest selling Australian authors of all time, with total book sales approaching 3 million.

Anh’s first book, The Happiest Refugee, is his enormously popular memoir recounting his perilous childhood journey in a tiny boat from war-torn Vietnam to Australia. The book became an instant hit and has won numerous awards including Australian Book of the Year.

Anh has since turned his attention to children’s book writing.

Weird Do is an illustrated series starring Weir (1st name), Do (2nd name), a kid with a very unfortunate name. Aimed at the 8+ market, these books have gone off the charts as national best-sellers, resulting in 14 books total and more on the way. The first Weir Do won the Australian Book Industry Award for Older Children (2014).

Other children's book series include Hotdog, the adventures of a sausage dog and also Ninja Kid, the escapades of a 10 year old Nerd who discovers he’s the world’s last ninja.

In 2019, Anh released Wolf Girl, a series about a little girl who gets lost in forest and befriends a group of dogs and an enormous Wolf who become her family. Then came Rise of the Mythix, which marks the first of a number of sagas described by Anh as ‘A superhero movie in a book’.

All of Anh Do’s books are mega bestsellers and all rate between 4-5 star averages on websites such as Goodreads and Amazon.

It’s clear that Anh is an exciting voice in literature, able to delight across age ranges and different genres with great success, and he isn’t planning to slow down any time soon.

Gwen had successfully left the enemy behind, driving their train toward the city she hoped to find her parents and sister. Her pack were in the cabin with her, excited for the adventure. As more trains appeared, all heading in the same direction toward the city, one drew up beside Gwen, who was stunned to see her sister slumped in one of the seats. Could Gwen rescue her sister from the other train?

But crashing through the barrier to the city meant Gwen had the soldiers after her and the pack, so they were once again on the run. Keeping an eye open for her family, plus staying away from danger was a challenge - could they remain safe in this strange environment?

Crash Course - Wolf Girl #7 by Aussie author Anh Do is another exciting adventure for Gwen and her pack of dogs as she continues her search for her mother, father and sister. This is a fun and entertaining series for middle grade kids, which I recommend.

After saving hundred's of animals, and now in charge of a train, Gwen appreciates the much faster way to travel. But Wolf Girl isn't confident at the train's controls.

Suddenly her worries about other trains on the tracks around her, vanish. Staring through the window of a train alongside them is her sister Kate. Just as quickly, she has gone again.

Gwen knows she must follow her, no matter the danger or proximity to the fast approaching town in front of them. Using the train as a weapon, Wolf Girl and her pack are soon inside the guarded walls of this town where even more danger awaits. Word that her parents are somewhere close has driven her this far. Maybe this is where she will find her sister too?

Before she can react her pack are under attack, particularly Sunrise, her giant wolf. Gwen will do anything for her pack, even putting off her search for her sister-so-close.

Just when she think she's finally met her match in an evil soldier named Special Officer Evans, strange people come to her aid. One has a unicorn horn, and another has wings! One is built like a bull. Who are they?

Wolf Girl is in real trouble this time, and torn between old family and new / human or animal. Her skill with a slingshot is undeniable, but there are soldiers everywhere. She finally learns what happened all those years before when she was separated from her family. Their city was attacked by another land with a leader who will stop at nothing.

If you have read the Mythix series by Anh Do, you will recognise characters who come to Wolf Girl's aid. I'm looking forward to seeing them work together to solve all of their problems and defeat the one man who has caused them all!

Gwen and her pack are travelling by train to Tunny, where her parents were last seen. On their way, Gwen finally gets to see her sister, albeit briefly.

Their arrival at Tunny attracts plenty of attention and it isn’t long before Gwen and the dogs wander into a crossover with the characters from the Rise of the Mythix series.

This series started out with so much promise but it’s frustrating me now. Gwen travels all over the place but she’s not really getting anywhere. Her lost family are dangled in front of her, the hoped for reunion is thwarted, over and over again.

Crossovers can be fun when they make sense. Your favourite characters are placed in situations you wouldn’t usually find them in and their interactions with characters from other series can show you aspects of their personality you didn’t know existed. A crossover done well can enrich both series. Crossovers in Anh Do’s books have been feeling like advertisements for quite a while now.

Stubborn hope has kept me here this long. I want to be there for the payoff. The stakes remain high, there are plenty of action scenes and the target audience are probably still loving this series. I’m just looking for the heart that was there in the beginning, in the time before crossovers.

Multiple animals were harmed in the pages of this book.

In the opening pages of this book, we finally get some answers to the mystery of where Gwen is. Those answers make it clear that we are not in the real world. Gwen's country is called Riverlands, and it has been invaded by its neighbouring country, Braxas. There is also a wall separating Riverlands from a place called "The Northern Kingdom". We're supposed to believe that Gwen reads a bunch of maps and uses technology at the beginning of this story, and I didn't find that convincing, considering she appeared to have only been about 5 years old when she left her family and hasn't had any practice/teaching re: reading since.

This story is a little different as Gwen and the pack end up in a new country. In this story, Gwen also meets (and gets help from) the Mythix, and we learn that the Collector is the ruler of the Northern Kingdom. Between the intersection with SkyDragon at the end of the last few stories and the new intersection with the Mythix, I'm beginning to wonder if readers are expected to read all the series concomitantly in order to make sense of what is happening. If so, that is a big ask!

This book series was really good at the beginning however in the new edition of 7 (and the special chapter of 6), the story feels more like an advertisement of Anh Do’s other book series.

I liked this book more than the other Wolf Girls. My favourite part was when the Mythix came. My favourite Mythix is Kelly the golden unicorn, she can run really fast.

This book out of the wolf girl series is probably one of my favourites. Even more action, suspense and a few unexpected extra twists and turns. Anh Do truly is an incredible writer.
