Jackson and Ellery face their toughest case yet—against the criminal justice system itself.

Jackson Rivers and Ellery Cramer have worked difficult jobs before, but usually it’s getting the facts that’s the problem. For their newest client, the trouble isn’t finding the truth—it’s corruption at the highest levels of the justice system. It isn’t enough to find the actual perpetrator and unveil a heartless plot—not when the DA is the bad guy and he’s using cops as his goons. Keeping their vulnerable client alive and out of jail takes blood, sweat, and tears.

When one of their major antagonists is killed and the DA tries to pin the death on Jackson, he’ll need every ounce of luck and all his resources to clear his name—and to find the perpetrator before the DA can use the murder to further his own agenda. They soon find that it’s easier to spot an honest man in a field of thieves than it is to shoot fish in a barrel—and both the man and the fish will be lucky to survive….

Fish in a Barrel is the seventh book in RITA-nominated author Amy Lane’s Fish Out of Water romantic suspense series.

And the morale of the whole story is very much one I can fully associate with:

“Ellery had to agree with Jackson … The world was fucked-up; there was no denying it. But together, for brief moments, they could forge a world of safety that would sustain them to fight another day.”

I have to say that the tension in the last instalment of this series is really top-notch.
No wonder, considering who Jackson and Ellery are taking on this time.

When Jackson goes off in the first half of the book to do something rather heroic, I was really at the edge of my seat, desperately in need of an oxygen mask. But although it seems that he’ll always be prepared to throw himself into a dangerous situation for vulnerable people, he’s learnt so much since book 1.

He takes back-up, he communicates, he lets Ellery and everyone who cares about him in and takes a much more responsible approach, considering his self-care. Doesn’t really help with his poor back getting battered again (not sure how much is left of that, tbh), but it makes a big difference to everyone. What stellar character development!

Ellery has also changed so much, from the prim, stuck-up lawyer at the beginning of the series, to a guy who deeply cares for those thrown into harrowing situations without any fault of their own. He is willing to fight for these people and gives so much more than his legal knowledge. And he is Jackson’s rock, as much as Jackson supports and holds him when he needs it.

I honestly could not love these guys more. As always, their love making is hot and touching with their love shining through every touch. And that last scene is really extra special! I admit to having a tear in my eye, too!

However, it would have been nice to know if Jackson does manage to take a step back from his active investigations in the future and is able to tread a bit ‘lighter’ after all the injuries he’s sustained, not forgetting his heart condition. I do worry about that guy as much as each member of the family he's gathered around himself.

Adore all those guys (Henry, Galen, Dave and Alex etc etc) and Jade and Taylor are power houses of women. The novella at the end including Taylor just shows how wonderful she is.

I also thoroughly enjoyed the bonus shorts at the end. They would have also worked really great at the beginning, as they deal with things happening before book 7.

If you like detectives, complex characters, tense plots with a good dose of angst, hurt and comfort, this is definitely one series to consider.

One of the best things I’ve read for quite a while.

I can't even say how excited I was to see this book. This was the first M/M romance series I had ever read when several years ago the first book in the "Fish Out of Water" series appeared in a box of books that my 'BBB's - ("Book Bringing Buddies"), brought to me. I thought after book #6 that I had said "see you later"...but never goodbye, since I would read those books over and over until the either the covers fell off or the print disappeared. But here are Ellery and Jackson again and they have brought lots of friends who I have had the pleasure of meeting through Amy Lane's "Johnnie" series. One big happy family now. Everyone has a part to play here, as Ellery and Jackson take on several corrupt members of the police department who thought it would be a grand idea to drug an encampment of peaceful homeless people, put them on a bus in the middle of the night and move them to "Heaven Only Knows Where"...oh, and one of them wanted to shoot a homeless man's little dog. Loved seeing how they made the "bad guys" pay, and something very special happened for Ellery and Jackson as soon as Jackson got out of hospital...AGAIN. I hope that there is going to be a book #8. Amy Lane can't, wouldn't, couldn't just leave us hanging and waiting. If you like this genre...and I know it's controversial to some and I respect that fully, but if you like it and haven't read the first six books, do so before reading this one. It is SO worth the time.

Like an old friend, whose faults you ruefully acknowledge but whom you like anyway, here's Amy Lane, bathing her characters in sentimental honesty, and homespun sincerity. I could wish that Jackson had been allowed a book off from being badly injured, and I'd like more of the reserved buttoned-up introverted Ellery from the first couple of books: he's morphed into an almost saintly perfect partner, & it's just a little boring. But they're still fighting on the right side, and...I like them anyway.

I just love Jackson and Ellery! After all they've been through, it's such a joy to see how far Jackson has come. They are so sweet together. There are tender and steamy moments as well as times of comfort. There is no shortage of suspense or intrigue. The story is fast paced with a good deal of goings on. I enjoyed all the secondary characters and sarcastic humor. Overall, this was a good addition to the series that ended on such a high note. I hope to read more Ellery/Jackson shenanigans!

3 Stars but that feels like a stretch.

I occasionally read author blogs. It is an excellent way to find out what is in the works and how the author feels about what they right. I am old enough to know that diversity is an fantastic thing what needs to be encouraged. The fact that I can say that while living in the south, is a positive thing.

However...

Some time back I read a post by AL about an incident with her son. The situation was unfortunate as described and I hope that it was resolved. Yet, I could feel a link between the incident with her son and the plot of this book. Had I not known of the situation, I might have felt a little more involved with the story but as it was, no.. It was like AL was using this book as a jab at law enforcement and the government in general.

Jackson and Ellerly are on the ropes again. A client has been targeted by the police and harassed because there was the possibility he was homeless. After what is a fun court appearance, the pair take a walk and decide that the new District Attorney is evil and hatching plots against the homeless. Full Stop... it can't be anyone else...

The fits and starts storytelling continues to an illogical conclusion. The plot ran off the rails into a shopping mall, I kid you not. Yes, there are happy moments with Jackson and Ellerly. K ski & Billy were walkthroughs and I hope they get a Flophouse book! Cotton makes a cameo & is so lovely because its right in the middle of his HEA with Contance. The cop in rehab "Cody" gets a visit from one of the guys in the Flophouse and I hope to see if they are a pair. Im still very unclear what Galen's branch of law is .. but Galen is there for dry witty banter and Hermione/Dumbledore clarity moments, not actual involvement.

Its not the worse of the series but the constant hashing at the government and homeless, brown people, homeless, brown people language stalled development in the story.

Jackson, Ellery, and company are back! Oh, how I waited for this book. And oh, how it was worth the wait!

Once again Jackson and Ellery take on the world—or at least it feels like it. But no task is insurmountable for them. Complete with excitement, action, mayhem, the requisite Jackson injuries and Ellery worrying, this next book is just as entertaining and captivating as all those before it. Great storytelling while addressing real-life issues and giving us the love and romance we need (Jackson and Ellery have never been stronger together) and the humor we crave, this one hit all the marks. With a VERY happy ending and some awesome Cruller chapters, this one easily made my day. I closed this book with a big smile and I'll be smiling until the next one comes out.

This is a wonderful installment of the life of Ellery and Jackson. I love peeking in and seeing what is going on. I always wonder what Jackson will get into next.

This story is great from beginning to end. I love when the team works together to solve a mystery. There is so much heart in this story and I think it's a must-read. I will say, you HAVE to read the other stories or you don't get how much love is involved in the world of Fish Out of Water.

Another hit out of the park for Amy Lane.

Amy Lane has a way with words. Her love of people of all walks of life and circumstance comes through clearly in her books. This series, more than others of hers, really challenges the reader to reevaluate their belief in certain truths. However, this felt a little more preachy than others.

I love Jackson and Ellery, but I really wish Ms. Lane would give Jackson a break from being injured in every single book. This was slightly depressing; well maybe more than slightly…

I like all of their friends and family; they are a good bunch of people.

This mentions COVID once, which seemed really out of place considering the time line of the book and the fact it is never mention at all ever again.

All in all I did enjoy the book, but maybe not as much as others in the series.

At the end is a collection of stories that fit in and around the full novels. They were interesting and filled in some gaps where events are mentioned in this book.

I gotta admit, I read the Fish Out of Water books half holding my breath, wondering how Jackson is going to get hurt this time. And it was no different with this book – it’s like hitting Season 7 of Supernatural and wanting to scream at the scriptwriters to give the brothers a break, like – they’ve been through enough! Someone needs to take Ellery and Jackson out of Amy Lane’s hands and take them on a long vacation!

This book was a doozy and I freaking loved it! From Jennifer to catching up with so many of the other characters like Henry, Galen, Jade, Billy – it was an amazing ride from start to finish. The subject matter was painful – isn’t it always with Amy Lane? -- but it was so masterfully handled, with careful information dumps that didn’t feel overwhelming; corruption and cruelty intermingled with so much ‘humans being bros’ that sometimes my head spun.

There are good people out there, and this book shows what happens when those good people get together and do the right thing. There is no real way to encapsulate the plot in this without major spoilers, but if you’ve read the previous Fish Out of Water books then you know how complicated and intricate the plots are, but how incredibly worthwhile they are in the end.

There is no way to read this book without having read the previous ones in the series, as well as potentially some of the others, but it’s worth it. I truly hope this is Jackson and Ellery’s happy ever after because they truly deserve it, although obviously I wouldn’t be averse to an invite to the park.

5/5 from me. I received an ARC from the author.

Ahhh, I missed them. This story digs into a serious city issue, and it is just as human as all the other stories. I loved it. Lane does a great job of reminding readers who is who in the interrelated series as they crop up in this novel. But nothing replaces having read them all. I re-read them all during the shutdown, and what a great idea that was.

This book ends at 83% (kindle), and then we get four shorter stories from the Patreon, set among the previous novels.
Cruller: Jai's boyfriend, ICE, Lucy Satan, and that kitten. :D
Clinging to the Curtain: so CUTE.
Jackson's Christine: haunted car!
I've Got You: nightmare help

I receive this book as ARC for my honest review.

This book took me a while (several days) to finish reading, due to the feeling of dread from wrongfully expected storyline to be intense. But what actually happened on the pages were different way of intense and more creative than my own internal musing.

The first 4oish % of this book already felt like one complete Fish book. Which contributed to how I felt like I need to stop and start the reading process.

The topics in this books was still timely, which is sad when you think about how it is still an unsolved problem. What happened in this book had happened IRL. And they do not have Jackson and Ellery to help saved them from the corrupt police forces.

I love reading the part when Jackson interviewing Annette.

Thoughts: Wow. Strong crime books are not usually my thing. I prefer them lighter and cozier, but the author grabbed me, pulled me in with really good writing, and didn’t let go of me even after the story ended. That’s because she added some quick story bites after the story. Those were just fun and Interesting.

First of all, the writing. Amy Lane is an amazing writer. Her characters, setting, plot… it all works together to make one amazing story. Jackson Rivers is a PI who has a rough background and is always getting hurt, much to his partner Ellery’s dismay. In this one, they are fighting corruption at the highest levels. Jackson gets badly injured (of course) and spends most of the story bleeding through his shirts and suits. The relationship between Ellery and Jackson is beautifully done. The emotions come through and you really feel for them. The best part of the story for me, was the old brown haunted mini-van Jennifer. The way she helps them, lets them know her feelings. She was such a fun character!

What I didn’t like: I was really confused by some of the relationships in the story, but that’s only because I haven’t read any of the previous books. An issue I am going to immediately correct. The writing is that good. But I really suggest you start with the beginning books first. This does stand alone, but I think you’d get so much more out of it if you had more b ackground on the series.

Recommendation: Highly recommended.

Disclaimer: I received a final and/or advanced reader copy of this book with the hope that I will leave my unbiased opinion. I rounded my review up to five, because I love Amy Lane's Fish Universe so darned much. Jackson and Ellery are trying to catch their breath, and heal from their latest adventure, when they find themselves embroiled in a HUGE corruption scheme. There are social issues discussed in this book, related to homelessness, and their related social issues. I think Amy did her research, and wrote the plight of the homeless population with much respect and dignity.

What I also love about the 'Fish Universe' is the wide array of characters that Jackson and Ellery have surrounded themselves with. Henry and Galen play major roles in this story, as well as a persnickitey haunted car named Jennifer that Jackson and Henry better treat well, or the doors will slam on your hand! Jackson has the best names for people, and nick names his cat "No Thumbs" when scolding him.

Meanwhile, Ellery is learning to trust that Jackson will always come back to him, and has learned to take care of himself. Jackson has grown emotionally, and absolutely realizes he wants to be the man Ellery can depend on. There are developments at the end of the book that will make your heart smile.

I could NOT put this book down. It's exciting. It's action packed. It has friendship, and it has humor. I laughed and gasped as the events of the book unfolded. Henry is the perfect back-up for Jackson, and I appreciated him having Jackson's back.

Jackson + Ellery = FOREVER!

The release of any Amy Lane book is always a score for a reader. I have been a fan since Greenshill and knew that girl was gooood….With age she has gotten better than good and this newest is simply wonderful.
Ellery and Jackson have become a beacon of light to people who are championed by author Amy Lane……Too political a reviewer says? This is where the rubber meets the road in Amy Lane world and I love her for this.
This author has taken it upon herself to write and use her stories to make her feelings known. Ms Lane has gathered a group of characters from many of her books, from the many series’ she has written, and has used them to make a mark in our world! This is very exciting!
The story is set in Sacramento and the plight of the homeless, with a dirty DA , dirty cops, just like today’s news. Ellery and Jackson find themselves in a tremendous two plot epic storyline….Quite a page turner and so wonderfully written…Pain, fear, sadness and humor galore.
The growth of Jackson is so wonderful to feel, cause you feel he has changed in your own melting heart. He has his moments of making Ellery crazy but he wants to do better and be better and even loves Lucy Satan…
Ms Lane this was the best yet….10 stars if I could…..So immensely enjoyed

It was like coming home~

This was such a great series. Jackson and Ellery weren't the best couples for me, but they do leave a lasting impression. Ever since the beginning, I've been rooting for their happiness and peaceful life together because there was always a problem and they just couldn't take a break. Someone (meaning Jackson) always got hurt.

I did appreciate the characters development. Jackson was one of the best character growth in any books that I've read. He and Ellery made lots of great friends along the way, allies that would help them, and supporters for their cause. It was truly an amazing journey.

The story was not what I expected, but it was good nonetheless. The sweetness wasn't too much, and the bed scenes weren't overdone. It focused more on their case, which was captivating and thrilling. I enjoyed Jackson and Henry's teamwork. They made such a pretty good team.

There were a lot of side characters, and to be honest, I couldn't remember them all. There was also a lot of mention of big events that happened from the previous books that I also forgot. Basically, I was not prepared for this book. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed their adventure. I could only describe it as a classic Jackson and Ellery case.

Fish in a Barrel is fantastic. I always enjoy Amy Lane and I have loved all the books in the Fishiverse, but what I really enjoyed about Fish in a Barrel is how it brought a lot of the story back to legal world where the first book originated. Every book had a bit of legalese, but largely the last few books had to do with invetigation or were more action packed. Those books were fun and nice additions to the series as well, but I loved watching Ellery shine in this book. Of course no Fish book is complete without Jackson getting injured, but the maturity and love evident in the way Jackson and Ellery handled it was such growth. Its nice to see throughout the series how the characters and their relationships grow. In fact, my only real complaint with this book is that I missed seeing some of the other characters I am used to seeing in the Fishiverse (Sonny, Ace, Burton, Ernie, etc). Definitely worth the read, but it is one I would recommend reading from the first book in the series. You won't be able to really appreciate the characters and their journey if you don't start from the beginning.

This story is tough to read, or at least it was for me. There's a lot of information about the justice system and a ton of negativity about political infrastructure and abuse of power. It was complex and actually quite intriguing. However, when I first started, it was more than I could manage with my life situation at the time so I put the story on "pause" and came back to it after two months. It was easy to pick back up and this time I appreciated it much more.

Jackson and Ellery are one of my favorite couples. They've been through hell and back together and remain firm and steady, Jackson now accepting Ellery's love for him and his own self-esteem finally finding footing for the strong person he is. He's also the hub of a host of other characters, many of whom have their own series (the author cites the crossovers in a post note). The last part of this story was exciting and hair-raising and then sweet and lovely and the perfect HEA. I do believe, this time, their story is done, though I don't doubt they will continue to fight together for quite some time.

It's been almost two-and-a-half years since the last Fish book, and while Jackson and Ellery have made appearances in other Fishverse books in the interim, this Jackson and Ellery-centric book reminded me why I fell in love with them in the first place. Once again Jackson and Ellery are trying to right some big wrongs, this time with the homeless population and corruption in the justice system. We get the expected witty dialog and fast-paced action of a Fish book, and as usual, Jackson can't stay uninjured. I love the addition of Jennifer, may she live long and prosper! Without spoiling anything, the real star of this book is the payoff we get after watching these characters grow over the course of the series. As an added bonus, we get some Fishverse ficlets at the end of the book that explain where the kitty came from, among other things. Another winner in the series, and I hope it never ends, because I can't get enough of these characters.

I have to be so careful because I was so excited for this book and now I want to just tell everything and how good it was lol. But I won't. I WILL say, it was as good as the rest of not better. This is a series that could just keep going for like forever and I'd be so happy. And it's not just Jackson & Ellery, although I love them so much. But it's the way Amy has weaved such a cast of characters in these books. Because it's been interwoven with other series, it makes it so much more complex and enjoyable. This book has been no different. They have as complicated as case as ever, and knowing they have people who are supposed to be on their side that aren't, and vice versa, is a lot for them. Too many secrets, too much left out, and lives on the line again. It was such an incredible book and I hope there's going to be more coming from everyone. I love these characters so much!

This is an excellent addition to the Fish Out of Water series. Jackson and Ellery are just as madly in love as ever, and I still adore them.
This time around, the men and their team are fighting against an evil DA and the truly bad cops who do his bidding. There are events that make the characters and readers stressed and angry, but that is balanced with humor and good people who care about others and always try to do the right thing.
I love how Jackson still can't keep from taking risks, but he tries to keep himself safe in ways he didn't worry about before he grew confident in Ellery's love. These two are so perfect together. And the supporting cast are as wonderful and amazing as ever. The bonus stories at the end of the book are fun visits with characters who make me smile.
Everything about this series is terrific, and it is a definite favorite of mine. Highly recommended!

Oh man! I am in LOVE with this series. I loved this one also. You can actually see the character development of both the MCs and the way their relationship has advanced. I think this novel focused more on the story line rather than their relationship (which people can have conflicting views about). Amy always talks about realistic issues concerning society as a whole which I really like about her novels. Sometimes I can't believe it has only been an year since their relationship started when you see the problems they have dealt with. Overall, a total amazing read for me.

P.s can someone tell me if another book is coming and when???

Thrilling Story!
Ellery Cramer and Jackson Rivers are back, fighting the good fight to defend a disabled man accused of attacking a woman in a park. Even the ADA prosecuting the case seems to understand the accused is patently innocent. What’s going on here? Only the latest complex case for the attorney and private investigator – and the latest installment in Amy Lane’s “Fish” series. Lane delivers another thrilling story, AND advances the pair’s love story in a satisfying way. Highly recommended!

Excellent

This is one of my favourite series of Amy Lane's, I haven't not like one of the books. I do end up staying up till the earlier hours of the morning to finish reading it

Jackson and Ellery are once again in the middle of things. I loved seeing all the previous (good) characters in this book and meeting Ellery and Jackson's new kitten.

THe main storyline saddened me, and I felt so many other feelings too for the homeless and the good cops trying their best while bad cops made their work harder.

I loved the book, I can't wait for another.

As always, I'm compelled to state that I'm not a fan of the mystery theme. It is just not my jam, but Jackson and Ellery Co. were irresistible as I continued to read on. Ellery and Jackson and Co. have a mystery to solve before several people, including Jackson himself, take the fall. I would say that I love this story; it flowed well. I didn't feel bogged down with figuring out the mystery of the whodunit. Most importantly, it didn't feel dragged out, and the ending was a little doozy. Overall, it was good vibes.

Jackson and Ellery get themselves caught in another tangle of political lies and everything goes wrong. I love everything about this book, with its flawed heroes and it’s accepting nature. I spent a lot of time with this book, hoping all would work out, because Jackson.

Amy Lane does a fantastic job drawing you into the continuing saga of Jackson Rivers. You root for the man, even when you want to wrap him in cotton. (Haha) I can’t wait to see more of this family and this world.
