لا يستحق الثناء في هذا الكتاب إلا ترجمته الجميلة، لقد حاولت أن ألتمس العذر للكاتب، كونه كتب ما كتبه في خضم الحرب العالمية الأولى، ولا شك أنه سيكون متأثرا بكونه منتميا لأحد أطرافها. لكنني لم أستطع أن أهضم ما قدمه لي هذا الكتاب بالمطلق، إنه يبدو مثقلا بالعنصرية، والاختزال، والذاتية المفرطة والعمى المخزي. إن الكاتب مارس كافة أنواع الرذائل التي خص بها أعداءه -ألمانيا تحديدا، ولقد أسرف في دراسة ما ظن أنه الأسباب والدلائل السيكولوجية للحرب بحيث كان الكتاب تعبيرا دقيقا عما يجعل علم النفس الحديث مقرفا، هذا عدا عن أن الكاتب أوغل في منح أسباب الحرب العالمية الاولى الصبغة الميتافيزيقية والصوفية بحيث يظن القارئ أن الحرب قامت على أكتاف المفكرين. لقد اثبت العصر الحديث دون شك، أن التنوير الاوروبي والعقلانية بكل اشكالها لم تخفف من قسوة الإنسان بالمطلق، فالأخير لا يحتاج مبررا ميتافيزيقيا لجرائمه، ويمكنه أن يمنح لها تبريرا منطقيا بذات المهارة.
