Adam Hills is an Australian comedian and television presenter. Known in Australia for hosting the music and quiz show Spicks and Specks and the talk show Adam Hills Tonight, he became known for his combination of positive uplifting comedy and spontaneity - seeing him receive a number of awards and glowing reviews along the way. In 2012, he hosted a one-off series for Channel 4 airing over 2012 London Paralympics called The Last Leg. Now in its 12th series, the show is one of the most popular shows in the UK. He lives in London with his wife and two daughters.
Charley’s only thirteen years old but she’s already an international singing sensation. And now she’s on her way to becoming a real life movie star. She’s shooting a movie with her best friend George about their previous adventure, in which they were accused of being international art thieves. And the movie has the potential to elevate her to superstar status. But when mysterious accidents start happening whenever she’s on set, it becomes clear that someone is targeting her again. Since the two friends were able to solve the case themselves last time around, they figure they can find out who’s responsible for the accidents too.
Charley’s character arc is quite charming. But there is more focus on George and his disability in this book. This is a great strength to both his character and the story at hand. And this is well within Adam Hills’ comfort zone, as he too has a disability. So he knows how important it is to portray it right and do it justice.
Adam Hills is smart to move the setting to his native Australia this time around, as the setting is easily brought to life here and manages to elevate both the plot and the characters. Another thing to note is that he has definitely grown a bit as an author because of writing his previous novel. The mystery is simply a bit better this time around. And there’s a bigger list of more interesting and better fleshed out suspects.
Another thing worth noting is that the comedy is on point here. Which shouldn’t come as a surprise, considering the author is a stand up comedian. But there’s a difference between comedy on stage and in a book. And here the comedy is a bit better suited to the written word. These are all small improvements compared to the first book of the series, which was already quite good. But this all adds up and makes this an even more satisfying read than the first one.
Overall, a very strong sequel. And simply a fun and enjoyable middle grade mystery.
Young pop star Charley and her best friend George are in Sydney, Australia, to film a movie about their previous adventure of being framed for a series of art heists while on tour in Europe. But a series of accidents have everyone worried! Is there someone really trying to kill Charley? Or is it all just bad luck? Charley and George have to pull out their detective skills to find out who is behind this mystery before something permanent happens to themselves or their movie get shut down for good!
I feel like Adam Hills has hit his stride with this second book. Hills' familiarity with Sydney, and the life of an entertainer comes through in the story. Kids will love the mix of suspense and comedy as well as the "behind the scenes" feel of being on a movie set at Fox Studios in Sydney.
From the moment I started reading this book, it was amazing! Lots of unexpected twists and unbelievable moments. This has definitely got to be my new favorite book!
An amazing book! The whole book is one massive mystery, constantly keeping you on edge. Always making sure your brain is finding room for all possibilities and thoughts. I would thoroughly recommend. You’ll only know whether a murder is committed and how it happened, unless you read the book!📖🗡️(or someone tells you)
