You would think that having her own coven meant Melody was safe, but all she'd done was graduate from a small pond to a larger one, and boy oh boy was she small fry.
Yet she had people depending on her, which meant Melody had to put her personal concerns aside and move forward for the greater good. Her mates and familiars would understand, so would her friends and family.
Or would they?
Could fighting for the very people who had saved her from harm, destroy the very relationships she was trying so hard to protect?
One thing was certain, none of them were safe as long as the remnants of Bestia still walked free, and nothing, but nothing was more important than their destruction.
Could Melody save them all once again, without losing herself in the process?

Hi! I'm "Jade" (pen name only). I'm a stay at home mother to three gorgeous young children. I've been writing stories since I was a little girl, but I have never had the confidence to share them. Finally a friend talked me into publishing something, so, "Siren" was born.
I ask you to be kind in your reviews. I know that you may not like what I write, but it doesn't mean that you have to be nasty about it. I don't understand people who feel the need to do that. My books cost less than a cup of coffee. If you didn't like the coffee, would you abuse the person who served you?
I have loved this series from the beginning and have been waiting patiently for the fifth book for what seems like forever. While this book was pretty long, it just feels incomplete with so much unresolved. Parts of it seemed drawn out while other parts seemed briefly mentioned or skipped over all together. I don’t know. This series has been one of my favorites but this last final one kind of let me down and I hate that so bad because it really had been one of my favorites.
The ending was awful. When an author puts a reader through the ringer with a dark themed book, the readers deserve a HEA. I don’t need every single question answered, but I need more than what was given. A 900 paged book should have felt more satisfying. All those pages were wasted on politically based conversations or reliving her past when we could have see the relationships strengthen. The list of questions I have would take me the rest of the day to type. That’s unacceptable in my opinion. Really disappointed in this series and author. It’s very rare I feel like my time was wasted when reading but that’s exactly how I feel. I will stop recommending this series.
Wow what a series paranormal and witchcraft it had everything more so much more melody and her mates dragons wolves Fox there a formula force loved them all and of course all the rest of the character's couldn't put it down
I spent 4 months trying to finish this last book in the series, but ended up DNF at 33% after the FMC Melody and her dragon shifter familiar Nick were rescued along with . The book was way too long, and I didn't care about most of the drama, both political and inside Melody's harem. Academy drama continued to be very juvenile with slut and bitch as overused insults. Fuck was also a word that was overused in dialogue at this point. The story also went a little overboard with the dragon speciesism... not entirely sure where that came from when it seemed like everyone respected the power the dragons had.
Relationship-wise, I had issues with Melody encouraging polyamory in her harem. I had started the series expecting a strict reverse harem with five familiars to one witch with no sign of M/M or extraneous relationships necessary.
Character-wise, Melody screeched and screamed like a banshee and started wailing a couple of times, and man, that was not an attractive behavior at all. The mysterious goddess and Daisuke continued to provide so many deux ex machina events. The goddess intervened to save when no one really understood it and Daisuke magically when everyone else was still clueless.
There were also a few plot holes I was confused at that I had written down. The dragons decided to hold a memorial for Melody's father because they found out he was dead, but I didn't recall reading that, only that Melody found out that he had been ...
At this point, I found the overall world-building to be shallow. For such a large world with wide-ranging political impact, it really only focused on the dragon clan, the Bestia clan, and the academy, and even the academy classes didn't really have a streamlined flow. I didn't understand how everyone had such amazing skills at combat when I didn't notice that many fighting classes in their schooling. A lot of the story was focused around the dragon clan - what about the other shifters like wolves, lions, bears, foxes, and prey? Shouldn't they have had a say in the Bestia takedown? The wolf clan was pretty much only mentioned when the wolf shifters were trying to figure out if Melody was too closely related to one of them to be mates (which is such a gross random conflict to add IMO). To be honest, I thought a lot of the harem members and species could have been cut out to make the relationship drama less complex - I didn't like most of them as characters anyways.
Other interesting plot points were glazed over and only trotted out when convenient like Quinn and his truthfinding ability. I didn't understand their telepathy rules. Previous books made it sound like the dragons could hear everything that Melody was thinking even when she didn't intend on it. The wolves later explained that it was mainly emotional and the thoughts overheard had to be emotional to be overheard. We also never really learned by the time I quit why exactly dragons were so much better than the other shifters and could do magic. I remembered a mention of the goddess in one book, but it was never resurfaced or clarified again.
Lastly, with the introduction of gratuitous graphic violence like chopping up dead bodies to use as weapons and torturing prisoners by hanging them on hooks and bleeding them out... I was pretty much done.
I had really enjoyed the first few books, but unfortunately my interest really fizzled out by this long 900-page book and the excessive number of harem members.
I really liked this book and series but the ending sort of ruined it for me.
The Bestia witches will attack whenever XYZ happens. They find where Bestia witches are staying.
“When are we going to attack them?”
“XYZ is going to happen tomorrow so the day after that”.
Wait, what?!? No one seems to put that together and say to themselves. Tomorrow XYZ is going to happen and they attack when XYZ happens. Nah! Nope. Just go about your business. Nothing to worry about. We’ll take the fight to them after XYZ.
This book is a long one, but so good! Not everything is answered, but I'm sure it will be in the spin-off that's coming up. This series is unique and fascinating! One, I will read over and over again. I like the fast that the students of the academy are older. It makes it a little different than other academy books, which is refreshing. I also love the slow burn of this series. It makes it have more heart and not just "knocking boots" all the time. If you know what I mean. This is a great must read RH series.
So like all the others, there was a lot of world building, lots of talk and not a lot of action. This book was longer than the others and took me a few days to finish it when I could finish the others in less than a day. Sometimes we got to read the same scene from multiple point of views which isn’t any different than the previous books. The situations were all described perfectly, most of the characters emotions were easily relatable, and every moment felt entirely natural. The relationships she had with each of her familiars and witch, was built up in the first 4 books so it was only natural for her to claim them all in this last book. I didn’t feel like anything was rushed, their emotions felt completely natural as they built up their relationships with her. It was hard to read some spots, her being kidnapped at one point. It almost broke me when she found out she had more family than the ones she lost, a sibling. She did what no one else could do and I wished there was more to their relationship. I felt like he had such a small part despite how big of a revelation he was to her. I hope he gets a spin off. I figured that she would get her ancestries power back, and predicted that her cousin would have to go before her aunt as it would be the only way the power would go directly to her. I wish that she was able to get all of them. There was similar names from bestia coven members and drakis clan that it got a bit confusing. I love K.U’s search feature where I could search of the name in the book and it would let me find the first time the name was mentioned and the description of their character. Otherwise I would have been a lot more confused. It hurt me to read about Diaske making that decision without her. Although I think it was due to a potential spin off with him. I know he was written as the bad guy in book 2-4 but Jade really knows how to spin the readers mind into making those characters likeable. Relatable even. So it hurt to read about the others derision and constant snipes at him when he didn’t fight back. Reading his point of view really changed my mind about him. I had hoped she would still want him but they weren’t given the time to explore that part. I also feel like she neglected him when she was constantly worried she wasn’t spending enough time with her familiars but never once thought about how hard it would be on him since she never gave him time or the chance to make up for his behavior. She stuck up for everyone but him. So that kinda sucked. I really hope he finds out he was given another fated mate. Thankfully she was able to claim the other 7 guys ( I think it was 7), and she loved every part of it, I just wish there was more of that heat in the previous books. What did bug me was how Shawna and her crew didn’t get their comeuppance. Her, Jaynie and the others were a constant negative presence in her school life, constantly sending hexes and curses and getting the other students to do the same as well and she wasn’t even kicked out of school. She and her crew was ordered to follow her around but take no action. It only became obvious to Mr Cartwright when she was about to take her exam and had her shield up to keep her safe from objects, hexes and curses being thrown at her. He heard the tings on her shield and saw the evidence but other than a threat to knock it off none of the staff did anything to help stop the students from harassing her and her guys. After everything they went through, chapters upon chapters and books after books, the students were never punished for hexing and cursing them. The reader deserved to see how it ended for the bullies. Shawna and her crew mostly. Otherwise I thought it was an incredible book. It held my interest and I’m so glad I re read the first 2 books so I could be fully up to date before reading the last 3. Seriously, Jade did an incredible job with this series.
This is the final book in the series and it is worth waiting for - it's a huge book so get ready for a wild ride of dragons, witches, politics and psychotic aunts.
Melody has come such a long way from book 1, but she's still fighting the same things, although now she has her own coven and many others behind her.
She is finding her feet with the politics and also managing to find time to spend with her ever growing mates/familiars. She is making many allies and seems a natural at the politics, but doesn't allow anyone to take her for granted.
The fight with Beatia is now bigger than she could have imagined but also harder, as they find out more they realise the lengths her aunt is willing to go to in order to gain what she wants.
This is more a HFN rather than a HEA - although there looks to be more books from this world so I'm hoping we'll be catching up with Melody and her mates again.
Omg! The final book in this series…it cannot be~ Melody and her entourage still have much to learn and more to uncover. She will learn what it is to fully be a Coven Mistress; including the political ramifications. She will learn about alliances, how to properly induct others, proposed candidates, and so much more. She will learn how to keep all her bonds in place with her fated and familiars. She will learn how to use two completely different magics plus a new power. She will learn to continue to stand for what she believes in and herself. She will also receive an offer that she will not be able to turn away. Everything she suffered and gained is now put to the final test when she plans to go up against Bestia for the final time…where? When? Who will die and live? Do not miss the final installment in this exciting high heat action-packed series~ I KNOW I was very sorry to read the ending but also excited at the prospect for what is coming~
The overall book was decent but the ending is one of the worst I have seen to a series ever. It did not resolve overarching issues. The author’s note at the end states“I know I didn’t leave you with a nice crisp ending, all the questions answered and a clear sense of ‘done and dusted’. Life isn’t like that. It’s not all neat endings at the same time.”
This isn’t real life, it is a fantasy novel and the end of a series in which the reader deserves a satisfying resolution. The ending does not need to be “and they lived happily ever after” but the incomplete and jarring ending is a disservice to the reader.
I would give the overall series a 4* for enjoyability but be warned the ending left a bad taste in my mouth.
I was extremely lucky to have received a forward copy of this the final and brilliant book in this series. It did not take me long to read, lol I was waiting impatiently for Jade Thorn to finish the final piece. And when done it was well worth the wait. I have to say like her dragons, I devoured the whole series, and this as a final instalment. Was thrilling. I love the style, content and whole idea of the story. Melody is warm, big hearted and fantastic. Her life has not destroyed her compassion. I do not hesitate to thoroughly recommend the books and Jade Thorn as a brilliant Author. Lol and although I am tempted , no spoilers. Well worth all the 5 stars ms more I gave it.
"Surviving Contempt" is the final book in my absolute favorite academy RH series ever. It's one of only five series I've ever reread, and even now I'm considering diving into the series once again. It has everything I ever want in a series: amazing plot, great worldbuilding, wonderful characters, suspense, action, ... This final book is no different than the rest of this series, even though I know there will be lovers and haters about how this series ends. I believe it works like this, so I suppose I'm team lovers ;-).
Without a doubt, I highly recommend this series! I'm definitely going to read it again sometime soon.
The end of this series! I loved the progression of Melody’s character and personality! This was the last book and Melody just went after everything and everyone like a boss! She completed her mates bonds with everyone including Alexander, but not Daisuke. It was bittersweet, but I think he will get redemption in a different story.
However, I’m disappointed in the ending. I kinda of understand what the author wanted and stated. But I think it was to abrupt. Did they rebuild ex-Bestia? What about children? The council? Etc.. lots of questions unanswered, and again I know we might see Melody and her mates in a different book. I just wished for a better ending that’s all.
Sexiness: 4.5 out 5! Way to go Melody! Being adventurous 😜
I really enjoyed this series a lot and would recommend!
It was one of the best series I've read recently. I only have a couple issues. A. She threw in words I don't think anyone on the planet has ever heard out loud. Wasn't needed or wanted B. 50 pages is all you allowed for the final battle. For a 900 page (not counting the other books) I expected it to be longer and maybe a little more oomph. C. I probably would've broken this last book into 2 books. It's OK the way it is but it would've made just a tid bit more sense.
Great book. Already read others by the author and so far you have an active fan. Can't wait to see more.
Talk about a ending and one big fat book last in the series. I never thought I would finish it.
Absolutely brilliant series. Dark, twisted and beautifully written. Jade thorn Ive enjoyed my first experience reading from your books and I can honestly say you deliver.
This series needs more ratings, shout outs and shares.
You can expect a lot of emotions, pain, love and hate in this series. Shifters of all kinds coming together for the greater good. One witch who has suffered so much but still fights for her beliefs. A full action packed swoon worthy romance 🥰
Surviving Contempt, the fifth book of the Of Magic and Contempt series, is an ebook I borrowed through Kindle Unlimited (KU). I think this is meant to be the final book, but the series feels unfinished to me (or, maybe the author plans an off-shoot series?). I enjoyed the story-telling aspect of the series, but Thorn misuses words on occasion, which forces the reader to stop reading mid-sentence to figure out what word the author meant to use. This last book was a lengthy read but well worth it.
This series was absolutely brilliant! It was written so good and so well fleshed out I felt like I knew the characters personally I will miss this series so much. I am however really sad to see that none of the other series have even been started to cover more happenings in this world. The ending was a true let down it barely qualified as a HFN it was so abrupt and unsettled and I believe melody and her mates deserved so much more than that. It would do this author well to come back and think about atleast writing a small novella to give this group a true happy ending
I adore this series and this last book is a BEAST. I’m a fast reader and it still took me a few days to get through it, but I’m so glad I did. Melody’s story is dark, there’s light on the horizon as we end up in the home stretch. This was such a good book and I can’t even find the words to do it justice. This series will be on my list of all-time favorites, that much I can tell you. If you haven’t already started this series or read this last book, then get on it ASAP.
Was disappointing. I dont need my books to tell me life isnt all about HEA. I would have liked to have a snap shot of Mel and her mens life after all the struggles they went through. Its been 5 books of overcoming Bestia and getting to know the men better will have to wait and in a book almost 900 pages i feel an epilogue working that in would have been a lovely note to end on. Other than the ending though this was a great read. So still 4 stars
Book 5 was much longer than any of the other books in the series, but there was a lot to wrap up and had this been broken in two, I feel that it would have been a relatively boring first half. A lot of the story was political, but there were also interesting moments and a couple of battles. Overall, Melody's story is resolved but there is an entire world to be threatened by Bestia which continues in other books of the series.
I love this series so much. I will admit that the ending left me wondering about some things. I like when my books tie everything up with a pretty bow and Jade Thorn did not do that here. I get it and I really enjoyed this book so I suppose I can forgive her. I may even read the new series that she’ll release that centers on a new character.
I love that Jade Thorn doesn't rush the story for the sake of finishing quickly. She doesn't cheat her readers and doesn't forget details laid out in previous books of the series. So not only is it entertaining, but also the attention to detail doesn't jolt the reader out of the magical world she paints. Great series!
This was a massive book, and I wish it had been split up into two, preferably three books, just so it didn’t seem so long! I didn’t love the ending, I understand the author’s justification for the way that things aren’t tied up/ explained, but I was really hoping for a definitive ending and maybe a pregnant melody. Looking forward to seeing these characters again in the next series
This book is over 17 hours long, which constitutes almost 3-4 normal books. While I enjoyed the series, I felt the ending was rushed due to all the chapters that didn't really go anywhere. The author should have been able to do more with the story in 17 plus hours and given us a better ending.
Seriously? That’s it? It just went and ended like that? 900 pages and there couldn’t be a few spares for a less abrupt ending that wasn’t even about Melody? I loved this story and the way that everyone grew together. But I kind of feel like this last book did a disservice to them all. It wasn’t bad, but they deserved more.
I feel like there was so many side stories happening that it all got to be one big jumbled mess of a book. And I honestly can say that I regret reading this all the way to the end. I probably should’ve gave up after the second book. Because it went downhill from there.
I throughly enjoyed the series. Loved the political intrigue and found family love. I can’t say I’ve ever read a reverse harem book but I found I really enjoyed the way that this and the spice was approached in these. Also appreciated the way the relationships grew and evolved. I liked the choice not to wrap everything up in a tight bow but I felt the final showdown felt a bit rushed.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
While I’d have liked just a few more pages for Melody to have her happy ever after…this was a great end to this series. Sounds like she’s setting up Daisuke for the next go. Looking forward to the continued world building.
This was a great end to an epic series!!!! I loved reading Melodys journey with her guys... I have been obsessed with this this series and while I'm sad melody story is done I can not wait for more to come!!
