A short book in the style of an abbreviated cliff notes version of Japanese history. It is clear there is significant missing information, but the book does state from the beginning it’s only meant to be surface level to give you a taste of the history. Then you can go and dive further into the history yourself.
I would say it was a decent introduction to periods of Japanese history I didn’t fully know about without being overwhelmed but the details. And it did the job of making me want to know more. I’ve made note of the areas I want to dive more into and I’ll do some more self study!
The reference pages were full of YouTube & Wikipedia links, so if you decide to dive into, be warned what you are getting yourself in to.
History Brought Alive has ambitious goals. The publisher says "Many books try to do too much with too few pages." and yet this is a really short book (they do pack a lot in here). That their information is "presented without bias", not really because right after that "We’ll cover the most important parts." As they see it, right? And "This book will serve as a reference guide for both scholars and history enthusiasts alike. We’ll boil tens of thousands of years down to the essentials you need to know." I would say not scholars. These are really written for young readers (seriously, there is a sentence about Kublai Khan's attempted invasion in which one of his fleets split up :Scooby-Doo style" Huh?) There are 46 references at the end of the book, only some of which are actually connected in the text. Some of which are Wikipedia (I think Wiki a wonderful resource, but never a source.) The style is simple and at times repetitive, there are still typos but the editing is better than their earlier books.
That said, there is a lot of information, some of which I spot-checked in one small package. It's a bit more than collected Wikipedia articles, and you might find some jumping off points within.
I received a copy of this book from BookSirens.com. As a history enthusiast, I admittedly know very little about Japanese History. I hoped this book would give me a look into the basics of the rich culture and history of Japan and its people. I was not disappointed. History Brought Alive does a great job starting at the beginning and moving through the culture or country's historical journey with a clear and concise explanation that includes mythology and socioeconomic aspects which creates a hunger for more in the reader. I learned a lot from this little tome, and there were a few surprises with respect to what I thought I knew as well which is always exciting. I have read and reviewed several of HIstory Brought Alives books and I definitely recommend any of them, especially this one if you are interested in history but maybe don't have a lot of time to really dig in deep. This is the perfect size book to get your toes wet and see if you want to explore further!
🌸 One of our pastimes is studying World History and ancient times.
🌸 This account of Japanese History including mythology and Wars has been very well received.
🌸 I don't think one read is going to be anywhere near enough to discover all the intricacies of culture, war, legends and Mythology of Japan.
🌸 I most definitely recommend this book as a fantastic place to begin your research into Japanese History. We will most definitely be using it as a resource for our homeschool studies.
🌸 I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Not knowing anything about Japanese history I was interested in this book which was a revealing journey in this country’s historical timeline. The travel through the ages are interspersed with light humour. The only thing I would have preferred were fuller descriptions of the people, dress, living and working conditions. There was too much information to absorb in one reading, but as the chapters are titled, it is possible to pick and jump around. Not the usual dry text although the timespan is long. It was an overall engaging, informative and good read. I leave this honest review voluntarily having received an advance copy from book sirens.
One thousand miles wide, one millimeter deep and depending on YouTube and Wikipedia sources. Ugh. Interesting but I gained only a surface understanding. Which is more than I had before so I guess it did the job but I’ll be looking into better researched books providing more insight.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. I found this book to be very interesting and well written. Most of what was covered was new information to me.
