In the stables, Qing Jiu rescues a young girl. This girl, with a stubborn streak, insists on following them. Qing Jiu allows her to stay, watching her grow day by day, only to eventually realize that what seemed to be a mere stubborn rock is in fact a precious jade.

Qing Jiu reflects, “Today I’ve found a seed, buried it in the soil, and nurtured it day and night with great care. Will a delicate flower bloom from it next year?”

In the depths of despair, Yu’er was given a helping hand. Qing Jiu’s arrival was the first ray of light piercing through her darkness, and since then, she has stayed by her side. Even if she is as elusive as a flower in a mirror or the moon’s reflection on water, being a bit closer to her is enough.

Yu’er wonders, “Today, a bright moon settled in my heart. I chase after her relentlessly, day and night. Can I be closer to her next year?”

The plot is structured well. Characters/details will be brought up and then later have their significance explained. The author ties all the loose ends together. But despite this I still want to know more about the characters (might just be because of how much I like them though). I want to know more about their backgrounds and their futures. Usually I don't like stories with a large supporting cast/stories where there's more than four people in a friend group because I start mixing up traits and which actions each character did but the author did a good job making me interested in all eight members of the group. Each member of the group had a distinctive personality and the love they have for each other was so strong. The dynamics between them all felt natural.

The author also does a good job of showing and not telling. Towards the end of stories I feel like authors tend to get kind of info dumpy to finish the story but that isn’t the case here. Throughout the story there was no info dumping and the backgrounds of characters were revealed gradually instead of happening in one conversation. This made this novel feel like a true story that takes its time to flesh out its characters and the world they live in.

Usually I don't like the endings of stories but I feel like the ending for this was fitting. I liked how the extras delve into Qing Jiu's background as it's not explored in depth in the main story. They help explain the most mysterious person in the group. Qing Jiu's resilience and how despite being devoured by hate she was able to be brought back from the edge because at her heart she wasn't a bad person. Reading the extras made me realize that the group members all reflect parts of each other (Qing Jiu and Tang Linzhi assassin background, Qing Jiu and Yan Li trusting the wrong person, Qing Jiu and Mo Wen being separated from their families).

English name of the novel: Jianghu Demolition Squad

I've read this author's other work, The Dragon, and that became my favorite novel so I was expecting this to be good. However, I didn't expect this to be THIS good. I was left with a sense of loss after I finished it. Like I had to part with precious friends because you feel like you're part of their group sharing all their experiences. The world building and character depth is amazing.

This is the story of 7 (later 8) people who are loners, misfits, orphans. People who have suffered great loss and pain who eventually end up finding each other and become travel companions. Each with their own unique personalities, skills and stories. I loved them all equally. This is the first time I couldn't pick a favorite character in a story. Even the supporting side characters are all likeable and makes you want to read more about them.

The main couple's romance is slow burn and there's a small time skip, but this is one of those slow burns and time skips that are necessary for a richer story and plot advancement. Be patient, because the reward is absolutely worth it. There are also two side couples who you can't help but want to read more about.

Maybe some brief moments might seem less interesting or less important, but later you'll see that it comes back and makes sense, like things coming into full circle. This author is very good at planning things ahead and tying things up well.

This was a fantastic and satisfying journey with an equally fantastic and satisfying ending, leaving you wanting more. It has become one of my top novels and I will be re-reading it once in a while.

Absolutely 10/10 and a must read.

DragonTL did a great job translating this.
