Meet the Parents!

On the outside, Ichiro and Shiori are the perfect couple, with a comfortable, blossoming relationship that seems to be heading towards marriage. In reality, they are hindered by a mysterious engagement pact, which has the power to inflict one-sided retribution upon Ichiro whenever Shiori feels upset! Having caught wind of the situation, Shiori's parents show up out of the blue to confront them, determined to separate the couple and bring their daughter back to the island. Ichiro and Shiori will have to stand together to brave her parents' disapproval... Although, could this finally mean a solution to annulling the pact?!

It’s time to meet the parents, as Goshiki’s come calling to see just who the heck their daughter has impaled with her stinger. If you were hoping for some kind of wild swings, you’d be right, but they’re sailing right back toward… normality!?

In a way this is a fascinating manga, but not necessarily for its extant content. If you enjoyed the relationship between Kuga and Goshiki and their family dynamics, fear not, that warm fuzzy stuff is spread throughout this volume as it has been.

Lessons are learned, love is in the air, people try to dress themselves for the date they want, burdens are distributed and redistributed. Goshiki’s infectious energy and how she now seems to know everybody is a cute detail and works well with Kuga’s earnestness.

It’s all very sweet. The parent confrontation doesn’t offer much new, although I keep casting Julie Andrews at her most matronly in the role of Goshiki’s mom, which gave it a little extra zip. Your mileage may vary there.

So what’s wrong with it? Nothing, but it doesn’t stand out much either, which is a heck of a thing to say for a series that started off with Kuga being impaled by a stinger that linked him to Goshiki in some sort of psychic bond.

But that’s the thing - it’s pretty clear the author had painted themselves into a corner with that idea because it goes right out the window this time with barely a whimper. Oh, there’s pomp and circumstance, but it doesn’t amount to much.

And they’re on to something when our leads are fretting about whether the bond is the cause of Kuga’s feelings and whether its removal will mess things up. That’s a great notion that gets glossed over fairly fast and makes the very sweet bit of catharsis not land as hard as you’d want it to.

Basically, the majority of the series’ concept is now dispensed with in favour of regular romance and that little bit of weird was giving it an edge. I keep comparing this to Fly Me to The Moon and, while I think this is the better series (both are decent though), there’s no question that that series handled the mysterious nature of the female lead way better.

This one might even show too much, as far too little of it seems to matter at this point. They even say in the next volume preview that things are pretty much starting from scratch, which is one hell of an admission.

3 stars - I don’t hate this series - the kids are a blast and the charm is still there - it just lacks the oomph of the first volume. And has, in fact, consistently lacked it since that wonderfully odd beginning. Regular isn’t bad, but it’s not outstanding either.

VIDEO REVIEW HERE: https://youtu.be/xVP1Lyc8wCA

I have definitely enjoyed reading this series thus far, but this volume captured my heart and absolutely LOVED it!

While I have been invested in seeing Shiori and Ichiro's relationship bloom and unfold, this volume had them both go through real concerns and even a moment of doubt. I didn't think I would appreciate the "drama" that look like would unfold, but I think it made these characters that much more grounding and their love that much sweeter. There has very much between a maturity and adult naivete throughout the series so far, but this volume really brings all that forward and see how "lovely" these characters are (to use Shiori's favorite word).

In the previous volumes, there has been a gradual building up and focus on communicating WELL (especially with your loved ones), but I think it was conveyed here the strongest. It was something else I deeply appreciated in this volume and was a touching reminder to speak up more, comfort, and encourage when you have the chance, especially when there could be doubt plaguing a situation. Seeing Ichiro realize that not only in the situation with Shiori, but also with his siblings was moving. Honestly, it made me tear up on two different accounts because both moments were really touching and caught me off guard.

I think this story continues to be a very fluffy read, but I could see this becoming a favorite for me as I read more about these characters and this family. It's truly a touching adult romance which is something that has been lacking in my reading and feel reading this story is even more meaningful because of it.

Definitely highly recommend it!

A Galaxy Next Door, Vol. 3 (My Kindle Review)

As Ichiro and Shiori’s relationship has evolved into something more deeper, an unexpected visit from her parents from the star island brings a handful of worries. Her unrelenting mother sees their relationship as a bit of a farce, and insists Shiori annul their relationship pact and return home but our couple will not let that happen.

We see them later continuing to show their love for each other with a very exciting date while Shiori manages her recent financial situation and a nice night with fireworks with everyone joining in.

A (100%/Outstanding)

A great volume that sees our favorite couple really growing together. Breaking the pact was scary, but now they have room to breathe.
So sweet!

Meeting the parents of your significant other is enough to make one sweat. It’s even worse when their parents are royalty! It doesn’t help that Shiori’s parents, especially her mom, want her to come back home. Now Shiori has to make her parents see that she’s not being swindled by some smarmy guy and that she’s making good progress not only in her artwork, but also in romance!

I really enjoyed reading this volume. While the family relationships are still the star of the series, we finally got to learn a little more about Shiori’s home life before the story started! We didn’t learn a whole lot, but we did learn enough to see why she’s so eager to make her mark away from home. I do wish that seeing her parents wasn’t as brief as it was, but it was enough to see why she is the way she is as well as why people always left her feeling isolated back on the island.

We also get to see Ichiro and Shiori grow as a couple, which was cute and fun to see. I love how much Ichiro’s siblings are involved and how Shiori truly loves bonding with them. It was also great to see just how deep Ichiro and his sibling’s bond run! While this isn’t a book I would recommend if you were just looking for a romance, I do highly recommend it if you’re looking for something cute and fluffy with some deeper storylines. It really is a mood booster. I can’t wait to get the next volume!

adorable...lots of big things happen in this volume!! we meet Shiori's parents, who are NOT happy about Ichiro. I liked how they didn't immediately change their minds after seeing Ichiro stand up for her/talk lovingly about her once, an unrealistic romance trope. the year ultimatum is a bit worrying, though I don't doubt this couple will make it through. the stinger gets removed from Ichiro, which clears up any worries about their feelings being solely because of the bond...I loved seeing their relationship change into something even deeper and stronger! also, Ichiro's kid siblings really steal the show here.

I had a mini-scare in this one, because Shiori's parents refer to her as a minor, and I was like wtf have I been bamboozled?? wasn't she 19 in the previous volumes, was that a lie?? but there's a translation note at the end that clarifies she is indeed 19, but the age of majority is 20 in Japan. thank goodness!!

Solid volume and still full of all the love and heart that I've come to expect from Amagakure's work. This volume tackled one of the issues that a lot of people had with the series and dealt with it in such a wonderful way. I'm really glad to see characters actually talking through their problems and figuring out how to move forward.
I'm excited to see how Ichiro and Shiori's relationship progresses from here.

I think skimming around more emotional depth worked better in the mangakas other series, Sweetness & Lightning, despite it also being a Seinen title, due to the focus in that series on cooking. However in this series that same refusal to really delve into the characters means it isn't really keeping up with other series published in good! Afternoon magazine.
A Seinen title with the depth of a Shonen.

I think this might be my favourite of the series so far!!! It was so sweet, I like how her parents visited and we got a bit more of the fantasy side of it. The romance development is just the cutest.

So, it’s one of the more saccharin love stories I’ve encountered in manga, but it’s not without charm. What isn’t charming is that super bland cover… yuck!

This definitely brought back a lot of the wholesome feelings I got in the first manga and I really like that the plot was more in it too. I really enjoyed it and I learnt something new too.

Love a good 'thrown together by accident' couple, where they come to love and respect each other afterwards. We get a meeting with the parents in this volume too, which is always fun.

This volume definitely felt like a filler volume 😅 it was still cute and showed their growing relationship and feelings but it felt mostly unnecessary.

i love this series so much, finding a romance manga that featured some of my favorite tropes forced prox, single gaurdian, and a bit of fantasy was the best. Shiori and Ichiro >>

Probably my favorite volume of the series, unless the final volume can surpass it. There are so many great character moments that just put a smile on my face
