Mis-Spelled: Book One of the Stellaluna Chronicles

Rate this book
High School never prepared Evan for anything like this.

One minute, Texas. Next minute, fairyland. To get back home, he has to complete three quests for the queen of the elves. Each quest is a near-impossible task to defeat fearsome beasts or overcome impossible odds. The chance of Evan succeeding is just like a fairytale, Grimm.

You want me to fight what?

Evan’s one advantage is that in Stellaluna, he can learn anyone else’s magic, but he has to find someone to teach him. There is no knight school for apprentice wizards, so he’ll have to get creative. Perhaps he can strike a deal. Deals with elves always work out well, right?

A contract signed with a drop of blood.

It's a magical romp across the realm with mischievous sprites, devious elves, and a crazy old wizard who’s a few ants short of a picnic.

This was a fast, fun, fantasy read that revolved around found family, unlikely problem solving, and humor.

Evan is a normal high school kid from Earth who escapes one sticky situation at school only to find himself in another world--a world of elves, goblins, and magic. The only way back is a magic spell, which the elf queen will only teach him if he can perform three impossible tasks. I love that Evan isn't a charge in, guns blazing kind of character. He's considerate and clever. He uses his head to find solutions that won't get him killed.

As Evan clears each quest, he finds more friends and develops stronger bonds that leave him wondering if he really wants to go home. One the one had, he misses his dad and grandma, but on the other, he's made a family of sorts in this new world that it would break his heart to leave--Sina, a pretty she-elf warrior princess who's engaged to marry a jerk but likes Evan better. Gemma, a massive green troll who wants to learn to cook. Pi, a juvenile dragon looking for loot. And Geezer, a fellow Earthling who found his way to the other side decades ago and has since become a powerful wizard.

The pacing is quick, and Leatherman squeezes a lot into each short chapter to keep the story racing along. And of course, being the author of several joke books, Leatherman seasoned the story with an ample peppering of puns that will have you laughing, groaning, and rolling your eyes alongside the characters. If you're looking for a lighthearted fantasy adventure filled with humor and out-of-the-box heroics, this is your book.

This is the first book I have read by TH Leatherman, the synopsis as original and from page one I was hooked and pulled into their world. Evan is a teenage boy from Earth, while distracting his brother Jerrod and his goons, Will and Gary, away from beating up another smaller kid he escapes into the woods. In the past Jerrod and his friends would stop and stay out of the woods but today was different. Running into the woods brought rain and fog as well as pine needles everywhere, the boys continued to chase him even after Evan hurt his ankle, he continued to run with all that he had. Coming to a six-foot-wide stream Evan jumped across it only to be surrounded by a bright light and a tingling sensation hit every nerve.
Evan was somewhere else, later learning that there is a great divide keeping Earth from Stellaluna. Currently he was in the elven country of Shara in the capital city of Lonathas. Evan learns all this information from an older human man that goes by Geezer, who has been in Lonathas since 1883. Quickly it becomes clear that if Evan wants to make it back home, he needs to do everything Geezer tells him to and to learn fast. While elves cannot lie, they can stretch the truth and nothing is given without a price. The Elven Queen Lycia is big with years of servitude while smaller favors can be bartered for. To learn the spell to return to Earth Evan negotiates with the Queen to complete three quests. When given the first of three it becomes apparent that the Queen is trying to set Evan up to fail to get his servitude for years, but Evan is determined to give each task his all to return home to his grandma and dad. The female elf Sina that Evan meets upon his arrival in Shara makes him feel like her smile makes the sun brighter and everything inside him becomes warmer. As a human in Stellaluna Evan has some advantages, one he can lie, two he can break some of the rules and is able to learn any spell he wishes with one drawback, it will make him tired the more powerful the spell the more tired he will be after. But he is quickly learning how to barter with the elves to learn spells.
Will Evan complete his quests in one piece? How much time is passing on Earth? The author pulls you in with fantastic world building, relatable characters, and humor just when you needed it. TH Leatherman also includes references to other works including Frodo’s quest to Mordor in response to hearing his first quest by the Queen. I look forward to reading more of the authors work and I can’t wait to see what happens next in the Stellaluna Chronicles.

Poor Evan! One second, he was being chased in Texas and the next minute after jumping a ravine he ends up in the land of fairytales and all the beings found in fairytales. Who knew that fairies, elves, dragons, and giants existed in another world? Evan is very aware of these creatures now and must complete three tasks as assigned by the Elven Queen in which they become more dangerous by the task. These tasks must be completed so that the Elf Queen will give Evan the spell to return to his home world but if he fails or chooses not to do the tasks, he will be in servitude of her for ten years! The choice is his: three tasks or servitude for 10 years.
So, Evan decides to take on the tasks from the Queen and along the way he makes truly great friends even when others are baffled by his choices. Assassination attempts are made on his life as he completes the quests as they truly are more than a menial task. Trolls, dragons, ogres and more stand in his way of going home. The best part of Stellaluna is that as a human being, Evan can learn any type of magic and finds those to teach him along the way and may I add, he finds a cute little girlfriend as well, even if she is engaged to a pompous ass of an elf! You must read the book to find out if he completes his quests and how he makes out in another world!
Such great characters and so easy to root for and to fall in love with and to wish them well! No spoilers but I like the fact that Evan stays true to himself to the very end. Once you read the book you will understand how important it is to him and how he does it. The storyline was wonderful and engaging! The book was so hard to put down as I just kept wanting more of the tasks and the other creatures of the fairytale world! Looking forward to more stories from Stellaluna Chronicles!

I really enjoyed this book from start to finish. It is absolutely amazing. The characters are well thought out and developed. The plot is engaging and absolutely hilarious at times.

Evan is the character you just have to love. The book starts out rough but he protects another and gets mysteriously thrust into a new realm, one of fairies, dwarves, elves and trolls. In order to get back to the human realm and his family he must complete 3 tasks for the elven queen. Piece of cake right? Not even a little, each task is more difficult than the last and with little support Evan must learn to negotiate deals to learn other’s magic to use in his quests. What happens though when those who deal like to try to twist words? Be careful of the words used to make deals after all most of these magical creatures are only in it when it benefits them more than you.

I really enjoyed how Evan, unlike his brothers, resorts to solving the problems with peaceful solutions rather than violence. He is a very careful yet resourceful person who will need all his smarts to make it out of this realm. I could not put this book down and just had to keep reading one more chapter to find out what happened next. If you like fantasy books with some mystery, action, adventure, and comedy then this is definitely the book for you. I will be recommending this book to many friends, it is that good.

I'm rounding up to five stars: this started off rocky and felt a bit contrived at first, but it developed into a pretty smooth bit of storytelling. The humor reminded me somewhat of the Myth Adventures as did the protagonist's proclivity for making friends of his foes. I've also never seen nor heard the idiom "We'll burn that bridge when we come to it," anywhere else, so its appearance in this book makes me think that the author was a fan.

The teenage romance didn't appeal to me much, though I will give the author credit in that it doesn't develop much until the characters have had enough time to actually get to know each other. Still, I felt that it wasn't really needed for the story nor did I feel that it contributed much to the characters or the plot. Though I do like romance, I feel that throwing it around too much not only cheapens it but suggests a lack of imagination, kind of like an over-reliance on violence.

The arc of the story and the conclusion were good and I liked how everything played out. It was somewhat episodic but the overall narrative still managed to flow as a unified whole. I also really enjoyed the found friendship and really enjoyed the characters whom the protagonist befriended. Even a lot of the secondary characters felt well drawn and were generally likable. Overall, it was a good book.

This is a fun, fast Ya fantasy read that will have you yearning for more. I love how the hero, Evan, is a stand up guy that stays true to himself throughout. The characters are all really enjoyable and written in a way that you want to know more about them and their lives in this new fairyland Evan has found himself transported to. Between the world building, funny puns, and characters TH Leatherman has written the start to a great series, which I myself can't wait to read more of.

The book starts with Evan in Texas before he gets unknowingly transported to a different realm where elves, trolls, sprites, dragons, and even ogres reside. He is taken to the Elven Queen where he is told he must complete three tasks as assigned in order to get a spell to go home or face the consequences. In this new strange realm as a human Evan can learn anyone else's magic to help him try and pass these almost impossible tasks. What magic should he learn and who, if anyone, can he trust in this foreign realm? Follow him along on his adventures through Stellaluna as he makes friends and enemies while risking it all to get back to his home realm. Does he pass the three tasks and make it back home? You will just have to read and find out for yourself. I promise you won't be sorry.

Evan is a teenager with more than typical teenage problems. He has a mother who does not allow him to see his father, claiming he is a bad influence on Evan, a brother who torments him, and a loving grandmother. One day, Evan makes a choice to stand up to his brother for someone in need. His brother and his goons then turn on him and start chasing him into the woods across the way from the school. Injured, Evan stumbles into a stream and ends up into a place that is straight out of a fairy tale. From there, he falls in love with an elf who is engaged to someone and tricked into performing three quests for the elf queen in exchange for her to send him back to his world. Along the way, Evan finds friends in the most unlikely places, thwarts enemies, and finds out where he belongs.
Mis-Spelled is full of loveable and relatable characters. It is a fun, fast-paced fairy tale full of twists and turns. The descriptions of the lands are beautifully written, and the reader feels like they are travelling alongside Evan.
If you are looking for a fairy tale full of mystical creatures, mysteries, and unexpected events, do not miss out on Mis-Spelled. I highly recommend it.

I highly recommend reading Mis-Spelled! Evan suddenly gets transported to a different dimension filled with adventure and fairytale creatures. Evan must figure out how to survive in Stellaluna and figure out a way to get back home. I really enjoyed the magic system of Stellaluna. Every race has different magic and humans are able to learn them all thus becoming mages/ wizards. The book is well-written and uses puns to be funny, even the chapter names. Evan is consistently making jokes that the reader understands but the people of Stellaluna are left scratching their heads. The characters and relationships between them are believable. There is enough of a twist from the well-known stories to be interesting. Often times I had a hard time putting down the book and had to read a few pages of the next chapter before I could. The ending of the book is wrapped up nicely with no cliffhanger, but I still can't wait to pick up the next book!

Mis-Spelled (The Stellaluna Chronicles Book 1) by TH Leatherman

Mis-Spelled is the first book in The Stellaluna Chronicles and is a YA Fantasy that is packed with action, adventure, drama , magic, humor and much , much more. I found myself caught up in the pages and couldn’t put it down. This is aimed for ages twelve to eighteen but I think all ages can truly enjoy this book. This is a new to me author but I definitely look forward to reading more from him. This authors style of writing along with pretty amazing characters make for a fun quest. This is about Evan and the obstacles he faces while on a quest. There’s a bit of humor and self realizations along the way. I highly recommend reading this fun book to find out what happens next. This is a super fun, sometimes hilarious, young adult featuring fantasy and loads of fun! One day, Evan is evading the bullies at school, the next he finds himself jumping over a ravine and he's in a strange land. A land filled with fairies and goblins and the Elven Queen who might be his only chance to return home. In order to return home, he must complete three specific tasks given to him by the Queen. The tasks may sound easy but in reality, they are quite challenging! And if he fails? He owes ten years of service to the Queen. However, time in this new mysterious realm is not like the time we know. Can he complete the tasks and go home? What lessons will he learn along the way?

This is a fun book to read that is pretty entertaining. I look forward to reading more books in this series!

What a great young adult story written by a new author to me. The main character is an individual that you cannot help but cheer for and wish that they were your own best friend. I was immediately drawn into this story and could not put it down. There were so many plot twists and turns that I was on the edge of my seat. There were a couple of occasions where I laughed until I cried. My family was looking at me like I was crazy so I would explain what was going on to them. In fact, my brother has now asked to read the book because he was entertained by what I was telling him. I highly recommend this book whether you are a young adult or an adult. It was so good. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Mis-Spelled (The Stellaluna Chronicles Book 1) by TH Leatherman. This is such a fun young adult story. I enjoyed it as an adult so I'm sure others would too. There is humor, goblins, elves and a fairy land, what more could you want in a story. Its the story of Evan who gets transported into another realm filled with fairy tale creatures. Its called Stellaluna and its a magic system. Evan has to figure out how to get around in this realm and more importantly how to get back home! Evan and his brothers are very different in their ways of trying to get out and Evan is determined not to use violence. Evan is very smart and will use his brain to get out of this mess. This book will have you fully immersed in the world of Stellaluna. You will love it!

Wow! Utterly Delightful! This book is one of those that shocked and surprised me at how amazingly good it is! I was intrigued by the blurb but the cover did not call to me. I took a chance and am very pleased I did.

The story is very well written and reads very smoothly. It just rolled along easily because it is just that good! The humor/fun is mixed in perfectly with the storyline. The characters are measureless! The sprites, trolls and elves among others are explored well. I enjoyed learning about them and following along with Evan as he traverses the new land.

This is written for teens and I feel they would throughly enjoy the fantasy filled story. This is a first time author for me and since I loved it I will be looking for more along this line from him.

Mis-Spelled: Book One of the Stellaluna Chronicles by T.H. Leatherman

This is the first book I've read by the author. Mis-Spelled is the first book in The Stellaluna Chronicles. The book took me no time to read. It may seem a little longer, but really it's not. The book had me engrossed from the beginning.

Evan is running from his brother and his goons. Trying to keep them away he runs into the woods. What happens when he crosses over into another world? How will he get back? Can he do anything they ask of him? The quote I chose for Evan is: “I mean, the giant is going looking for me, er, Geezer, who was me, pretending to be... You know what, never mind. The hill giant is going north to harass the ogres.”

Highly recommended for YA Fantasy lovers.

Mis-Spelled is the first book in the Stellaluna Chronicles by T.H. Leatherman. It is a fun YA fantasy with wonderful world-building, plenty of action, adventure, magic, different realms/alternate world element, wizards, elves, goblins, trolls, fairies, other mythical creatures, friendship drama, contracts, challenges, intriguing developments, and some self-discovery.
This was such a fun read- a great little quest. My first read from T.H. Leatherman, but if this is anything to go by, it certainly won’t be my last.
Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Happy Reading!

Thank you, T.H. Leatherman!

Mis-Spelled by T.H. Leatherman is a magical work of art. This is my first time reading a book like this, and I absolutely loved it. The plot is well-developed and the characters come to life within the book.

Leatherman takes the reader and Evan, the main character on a mystical adventure to another realm. Evan is hoisted into the world of fae with trolls, dragons, elves, and wizards. He soon finds out that he is trapped in this world until the queen gives him a spell to transport him back home. He will have to complete three quests. Each one harder than the previous one. Will he be able to complete the quests? Find out by reading Mis-Spelled by T.H. Leatherman

This book was an unexpectedly great YA fantasy story. I didn’t really know what to expect when I started reading this book but I was pulled into it straight away. Evan is one of those characters that you can’t help but like. He does things differently to everyone else and I found it really engaging.
The book had a great development arc too. It started off relatively so but did not stay that way for long. The author created a pace that added to the book and made it even more enjoyable. This is a new author to me and they have definitely piqued my interest. This is a great book and I would highly recommend it.

Mis-Spelled is such an amazingly fun read! T. H. Leatherman is a new author for me, but I can't wait to read more. Mis-Spelled was full of fantastic, wonderfully written characters. I found the way Leatherman humanized the fairy-tale creatures very entertaining and a great twist on things! There is such great world building that I felt like I was right there with Evan and his entourage walking through the forest, or climbing the stairs in the tree house! There are so many ups and downs in this book, but the ups far outweigh the downs! I love fantasy, and this is one of my new favorites. It being Book 1 in the Stellaluna Chronicles, I am looking forward to the continuation of this story!

Mis-Spelled: Book One of the Stellaluna Chronicles is a great read to enjoy just because. The way the author incorporates humor into the fantasy realm is awesome. All of the readers should be able to get the humor the main character uses throughout the story. One thing that stood out while reading this novel, all of the characters compliment each other. The main character, Evan, making friends with the unlikeliest of them all. Evan just brings a different perspective to the story rather than what people always thought problems should be handled.

MisSpelled is good, clean fun with a great storyline! It also includes Wells developed characters that try reason before violence and pulled on my heartstrings. I loved the way it ended, no cliffhanger but, plenty of chances for new adventures, three cheers!. Mr. Leatherman is a new author to me but, this is definitely not the last work of his I'll read. I highly recommend it to everyone.

An entertaining young adult book aimed at the middle school sect. A high school age student finds himself inexplicably thrown into an alternate world of elves, goblins, trolls, fairies, etc. He must perform three tasks for the queen in order to go home. A great book about the importance of friendship and caring about one another. It has enough gross out moments for middle-schoolers, but those moments are not extreme.

This was a very fun read. I enjoyed traveling to another world with Evan and meeting all of the whimsical characters. Some of the characters had not so good intentions just like the characters we encounter in real life which made the story more life like and enjoyable. I am still reveling in all the magical feels the book gave me and hope to have another installment in the story to read one day soon.

Mis Spelled by TH Leatherman was a delightful read full of magic and fun. The main character, Evan, takes being accidentally transported and, consequently, stuck in fairyland much better than many people would. I loved how he even retaining the snark if a teenager. The author has truly done a magnificent job world-building and explained it in such a way that's both easy to understand and engaging. I cannot wait to see what comes next from this author and in this series!

Evan had to diffuse a bully situation, but it led him to end up in another world. He went from Texas to the Fae world in just a matter of seconds! He works with the elves to figure out what happened and how he can get back home. The queen offers two solutions: either complete 3 tasks that get harder after each is completed or serve under her for 10 years. Even if he fails the first, he'll have to do the servitude. He gains friends, enemies, frenemies, and a crush as well. It's a great read!

Loaded with puns, this book is a hoot! Not a time-travel tale, this book has the protagonist traveling to a different realm. Elves, trolls, and dragons- oh, my! Throw in dwarves, giants, and ogres as well. The hero must learn who to trust in this strange realm, and just how much he can or cannot trust his own instincts, which is something we can all relate to.

This was a nice light hearted romp that I really enjoyed. Evan was the kind of flawed hero that I love to read about. He is not perfect yet still manages to do the right thing and come out on top. The story was full of adventure and had nice imagery. I love reading new takes on the paranormal and look forward to reading more from this author as I liked his take.

Humorous Quest
An enjoyable read with good characterisation and world building. The realms were interesting and there was plenty to keep me entertained. The host of magical creatures was diverse and the storyline had a good range from personal self-discovery to challenges alongside well -balanced action and humour. A great start to the series.
