Return to Inglewood #1

Romancing the Artist

Rate this book
Caroline Clapham isn’t a world renown artist—she’s simply a farmer’s daughter possessed of natural talent with a paintbrush. Talent that her mentor, the Countess of Inglewood, is happy to foster for a summer at her beautiful seaside estate. Caroline’s friends warn her that the season will end and she will return home as insignificant as ever, but Caroline refuses to let go of the hope for something more. Mr. Edward Everly is preparing to take over the management of the estate from his father. His new responsibilities are many and varied, and include marrying the girl his parents have selected for him. Unfortunately, the chosen bride is in love with another, and Edward would rather help her cause than champion his own. When he stumbles upon Miss Clapham painting in the woods, he hatches a plan to help both himself and his supposed intended. The beautiful young artist agrees to enter into a pretend courtship with him, but before summer’s end, Edward’s emotions are far from feigned. Friends and family alike have warned against Caroline and Edward’s relationship. Edward has a role to fill, and Caroline’s lifelong dream is almost within reach. Will their pretend courtship have the chance to blossom into more, or will Edward follow the wishes of his family and risk breaking more than his own heart?

Update 05.06.2023
I had contacted the author on instagram to give her a heads up about the distracting errors in the book, and today she replied, that those errors were fixed in the final upload to Amazon, but it seems like some people (like me) still got the file previous to that one. She wrote she'll be redoing the file this week and confirming with Amazon they have the correct version.

Therefore my rating stands at 3,5.

original review 04.06.2023

I loved many of Sally Britton's books, and this wasn't bad but wasn't one of her best, either (in my opinion).

The storyline itself was fine, the MCs made a sweet couple, there were no unnecessary misunderstandings or stupid plot twist.

The story would have been 3,5 stars, but I'm rounding down to 3 stars because of the irritating errors and the bad editing.

Errors:
Once the FMC was given an incorrect name (Grace instead of Caroline. Grace was another lady).
Once Caroline thought about the planned matrimony of Mariah whilst meeting Mariah for the first time, although nobody had told her about it at that time (Mariah confided in her shortly after). Maybe the author has cancelled a paragraph in which Grace and Lady Inglewood told Caroline about Mariah's parents promoting the match? (since the women exclaimed as Mariah and her mother were announced "how unexpected, it is as though we summoned them with our conversation" and this didn't make sense, either, because there hadn't been a conversation about them).
Then the narrator got a family connection wrong. Sir Isaac is explained by the author to be Lady Inglewood's husband, but he isn't. Her husband is Silas.
Aaand there were several typos throughout the book in the kindle edition (sometimes just missing parts of words, but sometimes the remaining, shorter word having another meaning that made no sense was confusing).
Having to go back and forth to check things and search for the meaning was distracting and not helpful for my enjoyment of the story.

“Life has a way of surprising us, and sometimes, the most unexpected journeys lead to the most extraordinary adventures.”

Sally Britton’s Inglewood series is one of my all time favorites. Returning to the series that rekindled my love of Regency romance was like returning to see dear old friends. I was highly anticipating this book and wow, did she deliver. It had all the freshness of an exciting, new series combined with the nostalgia of seeing beloved characters and places again.

Caroline Clapham is a talented, budding artist awaiting an extraordinary opportunity to stay with the Countess of Inglewood for the summer and hone her talent. Leaving her beloved family is difficult, but she can’t wait to spread her wings and push her creative limits. Inglewood is everything she dreamed of and more, that is until a handsome man crashes through the bushes where she’s sketching. Little does she realize how that fateful meeting will change her plans.

Edward Everly feels trapped. He wants to travel the world, exploring different places and cultures. Unfortunately, his parents’ plans are for him to marry his childhood friend and take over the responsibility of the estate. But, his friend is in love with someone else and Edward’s not ready to marry. When he meets the beautiful stranger sketching on the beach, he’s immediately intrigued. At their next meeting, Caroline agrees to a pretend courtship to assist both him and his friend out of their difficult predicament. The more time he spends with her though, the more he wants the courtship to be real. Will he have the courage to defy expectations?

I adored this book! Edward and Caroline are a beautiful continuation of the Inglewood series legacy. Everything about their relationship was pure perfection starting with their darling meet cute. I loved Edward’s nickname for Caroline, their clever banter, & gentle teasing. I loved how he drew dragons on teacups and sketched elephant ears on her mice. I admired how supportive he was of her talent.

It was so fun seeing Caroline all grown up. She was so adorable in Reforming Lord Neil and now she’s turned into an amazing, talented, captivating young woman. I appreciated her desire to not let anything get in the way of her goals, yet all she wants is Edward. Theirs is a beautiful love story with plenty of twists and turns on the way to happily ever after.

I LOVED seeing Lord Neil again. Every time he appeared in the story I was vividly reminded of why he’s a favorite hero. The special relationship he has with his stepdaughter Caroline is so endearing. His gift to her and letter of encouragement made me love him even more. It was an absolute joy seeing so many favorite characters again and I can’t wait for more stories!

Though I’ve gone on and on about the Inglewood series, just know this book can definitely be read as a standalone. I guarantee it’ll make you want to go back and read the original series. It’s a delightful, clean, historical romance I can’t recommend highly enough! It’s honestly one of my favorites of Sally’s books. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author, but also purchased a copy through Kindle Unlimited. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.

I loved the original Inglewood series, and returning to Inglewood was an absolute delight!

Caroline is spending the summer with Lady Inglewood after she offers to help her with her artwork.

Edward and Mariah‘s parents have been pushing them together for years, thinking they will make a perfect match, but they feel nothing but friendship for each other.

After meeting the two and learning of their plight, Caroline suggests that Edward pretend to court her, hoping that will stop their parents from further meddling.

Caroline’s sole focus is her art. Edward has no desire for a relationship as it will prevent him from his dream of traveling and seeing the world. What begins as a ruse, sweetly and beautifully becomes a lovely romance between these two wonderful characters.

I really loved:
🎨 Elegant writing
🎨 Regency era
🎨 Social customs and manners of the time
🎨 Caroline and Lord Neill’s relationship
🎨 Open communication between mmc and fmc
🎨 Talk of art and sculpture
🎨 Dual pov
🎨 Fun meet-cute
🎨 Sweet first kiss
🎨 Fun banter and teasing
🎨 Edwards character growth
🎨 Great ending

I loved this sweet Regency romance, and I’m so excited for more books in this wonderful series.

Many thanks to the author for a review copy. All opinions are my own.

A very sweet and enjoyable story! Although it is connected to a previous series by the same author, it stands fairly well on its own. Caroline Clapham, an aspiring artist, is due to visit her mentor at Inglewood for more instruction and practice in painting. While there, she meets a couple of neighbors who are being pushed into a courtship by their families. She offers to be a sort of decoy, establishing a fake courtship with Edward Everly while actually just trying to focus on her art.
Quite fun 😊

Inglewood has been one of my all time favorite regency series since it was written and as soon as I heard that Sally was writing Romancing the Artist and making it possible to Return to Inglewood I have been counting down the days until its release!

Oh my goodness was it so worth the wait! Caroline and Edward were just so sweet with each other! I loved the quirks they brought out in each other and how they balanced each other so well. I loved that we got to see Lord Neil as well as so many other people from the Inglewood series. But seeing Lord Neil, or Mr. Duncan, now as Caroline's Papa just pulled at my heartstrings and I totally teared up. He has always been my favorite character and I have loved seeing him go full circle and watching his daughter's love story now.

The novel kept me turning page after page from the beginning and I literally finished it in a day. I loved every minute of reading it and it had me giggling, swooning, crying...all the feelings.

If you want a sweet regency romance with heart, family, and just great all around writing give this one a go!

Intimacy: PG just sweet kisses
No swearing

I am so happy to finally return to Inglewood!
It was lovely to be back to one of my favourite ever series! I loved the Inglewood references, especially the father-daughter moments between Lord Neil and Caroline. It really felt like coming home!

Caroline and Edward's story couldn't be more perfect. I do have to admit, regency style fake courtship is literally the best and fits them perfectly! I loved every little moment between the two.
The countryside setting and the art themes just give this book such a cosy vibe that I can't help loving《sigh》.

I can't wait for the other books in this series because Sally Britton is one of the best authors!

Sally has done it again…left me speechless with another masterpiece!! Sally is one of my auto read authors and for good reason, she writes stories filled with unforgettable, lovable characters and the sweetest romance that leaves you weak in the knees!

I’ve been anxiously waiting for this book to release since she announced she was writing a new series Return to Inglewood! And let me just say, Sally let me speechless with this sweet treasure!

Since Lord Neil’s story was my fav, I was tickled to see this series begin with his daughter! Their father/daughter relationship was written so beautifully!! Their teasing banter with each other made my heart swell with joy!! No wonder I loved Lord Neil so much!!! ❤️ (if you haven’t read Reforming Lord Neil, here’s your reminder to do so!!)

Caroline and Edward were wonderful together!! I loved seeing Caroline all grown up and seeing her sweet personality shine through! Her scenes with all the children are some of my favs!!

Edward was so dreamy!!!😍 I loved getting to meet him in this story after hearing about him in the previous series!! His relationship with his sisters was the sweetest and had me laughing at times!

When Caroline mentioned her and Edward should fake a courtship to help him and his friend Mariah out of a pickle, I knew things were gonna get interesting! Watching their little ruse grow into so much more was entertaining to say the least! Hehe! I throughly loved every second of this beautiful story and didn’t want it to end!!

Things I loved:
🤍Friends to lovers
🤍Fake courtship
🤍The cutest nickname you ever did see!! (You will have to read it to find out!)
🤍The knight/knave scene with Caroline, Edward and the children!
🤍Any scene with Lord Neil!
🤍The attic scene!! 🥰😉
🤍The first kiss!!!
🤍Edward and him posing as Atlas!

I can’t wait for the next book in this series and to visit with all these wonderful characters again!!

Thank you @authorsallybritton for letting me be on your launch team!! It’s been so much fun! All thoughts and opinions are my own!!

Inglewood, it's sooooo good to be back! I've missed you and all of the characters that you nurtured and I've come to love. And it makes my heart so happy that I get to see their children growing up and being friends and finding their own happiness. Yay for more Inglewood stories!!! And that it's Lord Neil's daughter Caroline and the Everly twins' younger brother Edward Everly that are the first hero and heroine!!! It was absolutely lovely!

Caroline and Edward have so much to offer but in many ways have not gained that confidence they need to see their goodness and know their strengths and talents. But they soon will! They'll discover they are pretty amazing and better together. Even if their circumstances started out as a fake courtship! Honestly, that's one of my favorite types of courtships in stories. They think they can trick everyone and help each other out, only to be in closer proximity and discover they can't fool their hearts.

This is such a sweet and tender story. I loved it! My reading time was pretty limited so it was a slow savor of this book while reading it. I had lots of time to ruminate about all of the scenes and situations and characters. I just love them! I am very excited to see which characters will get their story next!

Content: Clean. Some kisses and nothing further.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Sigh. You know when you read a book that finished perfectly and you’re feeling all the emotions? That’s what Romancing the Artist did to me.

Returning to Inglewood was a delightful experience!! The small connections between Caroline and Edward were perfect. So many glimpses into past characters’ lives while not taking away from Caroline and Edward’s own love story. Lord Neil as a dad was so sweet, and I was so happy with how everything played out!

It was all just so good! If you like historical romance at all, this will be one you should look out for!

An absolute delight! I felt immersed in the setting and the characters' emotions. I loved Caroline's progress as an artist, that she recognizes her talent but also her desire for growth and further mentorship. It's fun to have characters from the author's previous books playing roles in this new series among the younger generation. It's interesting to see the dynamics between Caroline and her stepfather Lord Neil, as well as her art mentor, Lady Inglewood (Esther, from Rescuing Lord Inglewood- this makes me want to read it again!) Edward and Caroline have delicious chemistry based on friendship, and I enjoyed every minute of reading this book, even when they were still trying to figure out the future and the potential for their blossoming relationship while also following their dreams and fulfilling the expectations of others.

Romancing the Artist by Sally Britton, book 1 in the Return to Inglewood series:

“Even from her place behind the tree, Caroline could see Edward’s eyes sparkling with amusement, and it made her heart do its distracting impression of a dragonfly again. Beating hard, fluttering, looking for a way to leave her behind and take to soaring above practical things like the ground and trees.”

This book has left me speechless. To me it was practically perfect in every way!

Prepare yourself for a castle by the sea, beloved characters from The Inglewood series, a glimpse at life as an artist, new characters to love, the cutest children, family, dinner parties, picnics, beach bonfires, fake dating, forced proximity, flirty witty banter, a growing friendship and heart melting moments!!!

I adored Edward and Caroline! They are amazing main characters and I cherished every single moment of them together!!!! They have the cutest meet cute and two of the most adorable sigh worthy scenes I have read. The flirty witty banter and attraction between them stole my heart!

Read for:
🤍The setting-breathtaking
🤍The family-wonderful
🤍Returning characters from The Inglewood series-I love them
🤍The first kissssss-swoony
🤍New characters to love-and love them I did
🤍The Queen Caroline and attic scene-the cutest
🤍The fake courtship-so good
🤍The cutest nickname-sigh
🤍the character growth-loved
🤍An artistic, kind and lovely heroine
🤍A charismatic, fun and dreamy hero
🤍The sweetest romance and happily ever after

This book took me on a wonderful adventure and I didn’t want to leave. I’m pretty much packing my bags and I’m moving to Inglewood! This book was a joy to read, and If you enjoy sweet, and swoony historical romance with incredible characters and a gorgeous summer setting, then you’ll adore this book. This book is a new forever favorite!

*I have only read book 1 in The Inglewood series, but I really enjoyed seeing beloved characters again! Can be read as a stand-alone.

Broke my rules to finish this book sooner rather than later. (My rule is to listen to books when: I can focus enough on the story not to have to rewind and will not be interrupted much. If either happens, I switch to listening to something other than a book. Which means that the largest chunk of the day I am NOT listening to books, but to other things. Listening to a book is a treat, and I don't want it to be a frustration. If I have to do a lot of rewinding, it becomes a frustration and it's also time-consuming. Lots of rewinding at the end, but I got impatient to get to the end.)

Caroline, the female lead, is a budding artist. Nineteen years old, I believe. Edward, the male lead, is the heir to an estate with very specific expectations from his father to the point of being unpleasant and oppressive. Neither character is looking to marry at this time. Caroline wishes to develop her art and Edward wishes to travel. I enjoyed their conversations - my favorite part of any romance by far - and I liked both the ML and the FL throughout the entire book.

Britton's tales are always a win. I feel blessed that so many are on YouTube. I estimate that 90 or perhaps even 95 percent of the books I read are audiobooks because I can easily justify the time spent reading. The narrator is awesome.

Happy New Year!

If you’ve read Sally’s Inglewood series, you know why readers are excited to return to the Inglewood’s world. Reforming Lord Neil has been a long time favorite of mine. I was thrilled to discover this book is about Lord Neil’s step daughter.

Caroline, an aspiring artist, plans to stay with her mentor and friend Lady Inglewood for the summer. There she meets handsome and charming Edward. A friendship is formed and Caroline decides to help Edward out of a marriage dilemma with a pretend courtship. In return, Edward agrees to be a model for a special art project Caroline is painting.

This story was just charming. Edward and Caroline have an instant attraction but the romance is the best kind of slow burn! And the nickname… 🫠 I loved every scene with them together! I loved seeing their love slowly grow as they got to know one another better. And I must mention Lord Neil. If you’ve read his story, you know what a journey it was to love him. I just loved his fatherly role this book!!

“𝐿𝑜𝑣𝑒 𝑖𝑛𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑣𝑒𝑠 𝑣𝑢𝑙𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑏𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡𝑎𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑠, 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑛 𝑖𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑏𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑢𝑛𝑐𝑒𝑟𝑡𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑦 𝑜𝑟 𝑟𝑒𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛. 𝑌𝑜𝑢 𝑚𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑏𝑒 𝑎𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑒𝑜𝑢𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑠 𝑎𝑠 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑎𝑟𝑡.”

One of my favorite things about Sally’s writing is that she writes truly sweet romances! No innuendos, just sweet love stories that even the youngest romance lover can enjoy!!

Although this is a spinoff of a previous series, this can be read as a stand alone. Would I still recommend reading the original series? Yes. It’s one of my favorite series.

Thanks to the author for the ARC. All thoughts are my own.

This book is a wonderful way to welcome readers back to Inglewood!! How fun to get to see the next generation grow up and find their happily-ever-afters. Caroline is an artist who gets to spend the summer working on her craft with Lady Inglewood and have her work looked at by the President of the Royal Academy. This is where Edward Everly comes upon her while she's sketching; the two form a friendship and a plan to help him avoid an unwanted arranged marriage.

Caroline and Edward have the most adorable meet cute in the grounds surrounding Inglewood. Edward hasn't met anyone like Caroline and proceeds to call her "sprite" from then on. Caroline and Edward devise a fake relationship to keep his parents from trying to force him to marry his good friend Mariah (who's in love with someone else).

There's so much I loved in this story:
Dual POV
The fake relationship
Forced proximity
Seeing Lord Neil as a loving step-father
The cutest nickname ever!!
The art lessons!
The way Edward is supportive of Caroline's art!

All the heart eyes for this perfect summer romance! It's light and fun with banter and teasing. The main characters are so sweet and we get to see characters from the previous Inglewood series. Note: you do not have to read the previous series to enjoy this one. This is a new series with the next generation.

I received a complimentary copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.

The Inglewood series was definitely one of my favorite. I have been looking forward to returning to Inglewood with this new book, Romancing the Artist. Sally Britton never disappoints she has a way of bringing the story to life and creating characters that are so likable. Caroline is one of those characters. She is kind and caring, but also determined and focused on what she wants to accomplish. Edward is a sweet mess, he knows what he wants to do with his life, but doesn’t have the backbone to see it through. Caroline is so good for him, and I enjoyed watching him grow and become more confident. He had a fun sense of humor and delightful child like attributes. The story was full of sweet romance and an entertaining plot. I enjoyed reminiscing on some of the favorite characters from the Inglewood series and getting to know new characters for a future books.

We finally returned to Inglewood!!!

It was so wonderful to be back with old friends and meet new family members.

Sally Britton is one of my absolute favorite authors. Her Regency romances are full of heart along with attention to details.

I loved Caroline and Edward so much! And the best part is watching Lord Neil and Caroline! It is just the sweetest thing!

I am so excited to get more stories from this series. I'm so thankful to have been given an advanced copy of this story to read. I literally started this as soon as it hit my inbox. (Apologies to Mimi Matthews and An Appointment in Bath for making you wait. I just had to go back to Inglewood first!)

Warning: This book will cause the most dreamy book hangover.

That's right, this is a 2023 favorite for me.

Fake dating has got to be one of my favorite tropes. You automatically go into that trope knowing it's going to be so fun watching things go from pretend to real. Add to that how both main characters aren't interested in finding love and you've got a recipe for success! The never say never characters are also among my favorite :)

'Though she had visited Inglewood before, Caroline had never stayed a night within its walls. They had always taken a room at a nearby inn, stayed only for a day or two, then returned home. As a family. But this time, everything was different.'

Enter Edward Everly.

"Are you a capable flirt, Mr. Everly?"
He chuckled. "Call me Edward. We are allies in battle, Miss Clapham. And you will have to judge my abilities yourself."

These two together have created the best summer romance you'll read! It's fun, it's tender, it's well balanced, perfectly paced and every detail Sally Britton adds only makes it that much more beautiful! While Caroline is working towards an art masterpiece, this story weaves in and out of that painting with a parallel masterpiece of its own. It's hard to put into words how well-rounded this story is. I can't get enough of it and have already been back through it twice rereading my favorite scenes. Edward struggles with the expectations of his parents and views matrimony as the last shred of freedom he has. His escapes with Caroline are the perfect adventure and your heart is going to melt into a puddle with their love story.

Have your highlighter and annotated tabs at the read for this one. You'll be marking it up with how wonderful it is!

All of the stars, all of the feels...this is the summer romance you've been needing!

Thanks to the author for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Content/Trigger: controlling parents, strained family relationships, flirting, pretend relationship, kisses.

Back to Inglewood!!! I absolutely adored this! Kind of a mid generation 🥲

Loved little Mr. Edward Everly and Miss Caroline Clapham. We have some "fake dating" regency style and the return of most of the original group (which I love!) and catching up with them and their cute little families!

Definitely recommend this one, but read the Inglewood series first for better enjoyment!

Plans and wishes for the future, are they set in stone or can something happen that change them or even make them better - like love? Caroline Clapham and Edward Everly are both in for a much more interesting Summer than either of them could possibly think of, all because of the other. Feelings they could not have imagined make their way into their hearts after meeting each other under the birch trees.

Such a joy to return to Inglewood and meet some of the well known characters from the original series! Having read those books are not a requirement for enjoying this story though. This one stands most sertainly on it's own legs with loving relationships and not so loving, sceeming and unexpected villains. And quite some talking about art and painting as Caroline is an artist. As always in Sally Britton's stories, love and goodness always conquer. Another of her books to join all the others on my bookshelf.

Heartwarming. If I had to sum up this book in one word, it would be heartwarming.

And it’s not just the romance that’s warm. It’s Caroline’s family relationship, it’s Edward and Caroline’s warm friendship as they support each other, it’s their genuine sweetness as the play with young children, it’s the support of their friends in the community that, to paraphrase Caroline, “curled around my heart like a contented kitten.”

WHAT I LIKED:

-ROMANCE
There’s definitely an instant attraction to their romance but it’s a slow-ish burn. Their romance happens over the course of the summer, so not long considering they start as strangers, yet it didn’t feel rushed. The progression from strangers, to friends, to more felt real and sincere.

“Loving Caroline had breathed life into his dormant aspirations, reigniting the dormant flame of his true self. In her presence, he found solace and inspiration, and felt more himself than he had been in years. Watching her work, her dedication to achieving her heart’s desire, made him wish he possessed the courage to confront his own inner battles.”

Neither of them were looking for love, but they chose love because they made each other better. She helps him better himself and to stand up for himself. He is incredibly supportive of her, her dream, and entirely selfless in giving her what he feels she deserves.

-FAMILY
I equally loved Caroline’s relationship with her family, especially her “papa.” Her parents love story from the Inglewood series is one of my favorites, but even if you haven’t read it (which you really should, it’s amazing,) you will fall in love with them.

But the story is not all fluff, sunshine, and roses. Edward has a very different relationship with his parents, his father particularly. It provides a good contrast to Caroline’s family and adds some balance so the story.

-CHARACTERS

Both characters were very likable. Caroline is talented but insecure. Witty and playful but also gentle and kind. Edward has ambition. He’s bold and brash at times but it stays somewhat hidden beneath the restrains of his family, though sometimes it shows. (The scene of him jumping out the window was hilarious.) The light banter between them was pleasant and humorous at times.

WHAT I DIDNT LOVE.

Honestly, I personally have no complaints about this story. But it entirely depends what you’re looking for. This is a very gentle read. The romance is compelling, and it doesn’t drag, but there’s not a lot of action. If you like more angst and drama to your romances, this might not be the best fit for you. There is tension and obstacles to their romance, but it’s mostly from their internal insecurities and uncertainty. There’s not a lot of drama. Personally, I appreciate that Sally didn’t draw out tension there and exaggerate just to create more tension. That annoys me in books. But others may like it.

Though I think I personally liked the Inglewood series a little better, this book is a wonderful addition/continuation to the world Sally has created. I have been eagerly awaiting this book and was not disappointed. I can’t wait for the rest of the series.

Bottom line: Perfect if you’re looking for a soft, warm, heartfelt, and clean read. Great summer read. Whether you’ve read the Inglewood series or not, regency fans will enjoy Edward and Cara’s love story.

Quote: “Life has a way of surprising us, and sometimes, the most unexpected journeys lead to the most extraordinary adventures.”

"Life has a way of surprising us, and sometimes, the most unexpected journeys lead to the most extraordinary adventures."
This newest story from Sally Britton was so wonderful! Caroline travels to Inglewood for the summer to be tutored in her art. While she is there, she meets a man, Edward, who intrigues her and a woman who quickly becomes a friend. When she discovers they could use some help, Caroline agrees to a pretend courtship for the summer to help solve their dilemma. Edward desires to travel and see the world, but feels stuck by his responsibilities and family duties. As Edward and Caroline spend more time together, they begin to discover that their future may hold more than they had expected, including the possibility of a love relationship they never saw coming.
What I loved:
* Sally Britton is one of my favorite authors. The way that she tells a love story is beautiful and captivating.
* Caroline was such a lovely character- her kind heart, her willingness to step in to help, her perspective, and her strength.
* Edward's playful side, his ability to help others smile in difficulty, and his way of putting others before himself.
* Seeing characters from the original Inglewood stories was so wonderful! I have only read the first in the series but it still brought me joy to get to see where they were now and how their friendships had stayed strong
* The painting sessions, the bonfire, the play times with the kids, and searching for props in the attic
* The daddy/daughter relationship between Caroline and "Lord Neil"
I am so excited that this is the beginning of a series and can't wait to see what's next!

A sweet story of love changing lives
A sweet book of friendship blossoming into something more with the changing and joining together of life goals. Caroline was a young artist and with the mentorship and help of Lady Inglewood she hoped to study with other artists. Then she dreamed of finding recognition for her work and perhaps teaching others. Marriage was not something she truly contemplated, despite loving children, her art was her life. Now she had a chance to work with Lady Inglewood for the summer. Looking over Carolyn’s portfolio, Lady Inglewood declared that it was missing a work based in myth showing her ability with the human form. But where could she possibly get a male model willing to pose for such a work? Edward was heir to an estate and his parents were pushing him to marry, particularly marry Mariah. But even though Mariah and Edward had been life long friends they were not at all interested in each other romantically. In fact, Mariah was in love with someone else who she knew her parents would not approve of, at least not while Edward was available. As Caroline becomes aware of Edward and Mariah’s dilemma a plan is hatched. Edward would pretend to court Caroline and in return he would pose for the painting. Both new the courtship was a ruse too help Mariah. Both knew it would end with the summer. Unfortunately, no one told their hearts. I received an early copy and this is my honest review.

It was thoroughly enjoyable to return to Inglewood and see most of the main characters from the original series as spouses and parents. Lord Neil, whom I never felt very attached to, is a wonderful stepfather; and Grace as an older sister is one of my favorite characters.

There were a lot of typos/grammatical errors, but that may be because I was reading an Advanced Reader Copy.

I do take issue with the plot of the novel, as delightful as it was. The entire premise is that Edward and Caroline enter a pretend courtship for reasons explained in the synopsis; but courtship at the time was not really an official relationship status. Men and women saw one another at dinner parties, balls, and other social gatherings, but nothing was official until they were engaged. Although at first I thought "courtship" would mean they spent lots of time together at these kinds of things, Edward treats it very much like a Purity Culture courtship, asking her parents' permission and treating it similarly to the way we treat dating today. That said, the word courtship does occur in some of Jane Austen's novels, so perhaps I misunderstand the social expectations of the time.

I can't wait for the rest of the series, and I sincerely hope Charity and Patience get books of their own someday!

Beautiful, but a lot of typos

What a great beginning to a continuing series! The characters were well-drawn, each with weaknesses and uncertainties. What begins as a pretend courtship quickly becomes something else, but there isn't drawn-out angst and willful misunderstandings, which drive me crazy. I can't wait to read more of his series, but I hope the next books are better edited. There were missing words and letters throughout the book and I hope they do an update soon.

The book is absolutely brilliant. I loved every part of it. Somehow Sally Britton’s books are always so happy and full of light, as well as deep and well thought out.

I loved the characters. They were smart, kind and strong. I can’t stand to read about the weak characters that don’t know what they want. So these were a treat to read about. I admired everyone in this story, cried and laughed with them and enjoyed their adventures.

I liked that the book is so much more than just a romance story. There is the story of finding courage to follow your dreams, the story of family’s support and the story of finding your voice.

And lastly, I loved the art theme. It inspired me to try painting myself. I always wanted to learn but there were always some other priorities.

I absolutely loved this book!!!! It has all my favorite tropes: friends to lovers, fake dating, he falls first, cinnamon roll MMC, and DUAL POV!

One of my favorite things about this book was the relationship Caroline has with her family, in particular her step dad. It was so well written to be believable and so sweet. I haven’t read many books with that type of relationship and I really enjoyed that.

The fake dating, or courting, was believable and adorable. There were no lulls for me in this book, I had a hard time putting it down! It completely sucked me in and I was grinning the whole time. A perfect swoony escape!

"Romancing the Artist" is an absolute gem of a Regency-era story, written by Sally Britton. The 1823 Suffolk setting was beautifully described, so much so that I felt as if I were there. I love Caroline and Edward! Getting to know them was very fun. I also enjoyed seeing their interactions with each other as well as their first impressions of each other. Edward's nickname for Caroline was perfect. The author has done such great work creating characters who feel three-dimensional and original. I really like Caroline's family! They are sweet and supportive of her dreams, goals, and aspirations, as is Edward. I also liked Edward's mother and sisters. His sisters were so cheerful and sweet! The scene at the tea shop was great. Some of my other favorite scenes include: the picnic, the daisy crown, the costume search, and of course the meeting with Delacroix! I love that the author has included that. The author has done such excellent work researching everything, including the information about the Royal Academy and the art scene at that time. As an art historian with a background in studio art, I applaud her! Very well done. The writing style is smooth and clear and the speed of the plot is perfect. The author has included wonderful descriptions of the setting, characters, and locations that really enrich the story and help the reader to clearly see what is happening. The romance and banter in this book is outstanding! Edward and Caroline are wonderful as individual characters and as a couple. Their romance is sweet, heartfelt, and feels so genuine. I enjoyed seeing them slowly realize the truth of their feelings for each other! It was also very interesting to see the "pretend courtship" trope expressed in a Regency-era story and in such a delightful and refreshing way. "Romancing the Artist" is definitely a 5 star book and a must read! I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Thank you very much to the author Sally Britton, for providing me with the wonderful opportunity of being on the ARC Team and for providing me with a digital copy to read and review honestly.

I have been WAITING for Sally to take me back to Inglewood after reading her Inglewood series a year back. I am so happy to say that Romancing the Artist is that book!!! (I have not yet read Reforming Lord Neil- I know shame shame on my part. It’s on my list!)

This story follows Caroline (Lord Neil’s step-daughter) as she takes on a summer of artistry under her mentor, Lady Inglewood, with hopes that she will be able to follow her artistic dreams. It’s here in this part of the country where she meets Edward Everly, a gentleman with similar dreams to travel and explore the world. Unfortunately, Edward’s parents have plans for a union between himself and one of his neighbors. Both devise a plan to help each other in their endeavors, including a pretend courtship.

This story was adorable! I’m not one for the “fake dating” trope but I was on board with this one. Edward and Caroline both wear their hearts on their sleeves. Caroline’s candor is fun and refreshing and I could see why Edward was hooked right away. One scene in a certain room in the house…I can’t give details but it was SO swoony.

I loved the artistry aspect and to tag that along with Esther Riley was my absolute favorite. Esther is my favorite Sally Britton character to date. And then add Mr. and Mrs. Barnes and the brooding, serious Lord Inglewood!? This book just makes me want to read all of the original Inglewood stories! The one tiny scene with Silas and the painting…bahahaha! I laughed out loud at that one!

Great start to this new Inglewood series. I am excited to see what happens next! Perfect summer and beach read for regency lovers. Very sweet and lovely historical romance with all the characters we know and love. Available now!

Thank you Sally for the early copy!

A Return to Inglewood, fake courting, and cute story! If you loved the Inglewood Series you will love returning there. I personally haven’t read the previous series but plan to. I would recommend reading it first because there is a lot of backstory information missing from this book but that doesn’t mean this book doesn’t stand on it own. I really enjoyed the characters and story. Caroline goes to stay with the Countess of Inglewood to be mentored by her in art. There she meets Edward. Edward’s parents want him to marry Mariah. Both Edward and Mariah don’t want to marry each other in fact Mariah has another man in mind. Caroline offers to pretend to be courting Edward to help them out of this situation. But I think we all know what happens 😊 Edward and Caroline are really cute together. I liked how Caroline helps Edward to voice what he wants and not hide it. I also really enjoyed the relationship between Caroline and her father. Overall a great story, clean and I recommend!
