All the lines of fate have been pulling Edra Tendric to LA. It is the last place he wants to go, leaving his mate Inspector Jordan Kells in San Francisco to deal with a fractured mytho population and an increasingly tense political situation. Someone wanted Edra removed as Mytho Liaison, and they got their way.
With the exposure of their relationship, Jordan has to negotiate the fallout at work and among the people he called friends. As the elves arm themselves and favors are called in, Jordan will need to decide where he stands because doing the right thing doesn’t always mean following the law he swore to uphold.
Being a lesser dragon’s mate isn’t all mating flights and fun. Not when his mate is the Knight of a city on the brink of war.
Book 4 in the gay urban fantasy crime series that follows Jordan and Edra as they solve crime and figure out how to improve mytho and human relations. For readers who like dragon shifters and fated mates romance.

** I WAS GIVEN THIS BOOK FOR MY READING PLEASURE **
Vanity and Other Monsters, by T.J. Nichols Mytho, Book 4 ★★★★★

Nichols has done it again! I feel like it's been a long time since I was last in the land of Mytho, so I re-read all the previous books to get the whole experience, before delving into Book 4. Personally, I LOVE doing that. I know it takes more time and commitment, but I love seeing the *whole* story in one epic chunk, from beginning to...well, not the end, yet.
Jordan and Edra's relationship has just been exposed to the human world, which comes with all the fall out they expected – and some they expected but never came. I was intrigued by how the Captain's attitude changed, and how it had an impact on the Mythos' view of Jordan, and his relationship with his friends.
As before, the story manages to take one singular main plot point – Edra's long-awaited trip to LA – and weave multiple little nuances through that one plot point. Here, there are lots of little dots that connect to resolve the LA situation, both in San Francisco and in LA, so that both Jordan and Edra have equal share of the story, and the resolution to the problem. This book is all about LA, the unravelling of the vampire's scheming, and the consequences of Edra's trip there.
When it comes to characters, I loved seeing the return of old, familiar characters from previously in the series: Vlash, Francis, Cassius etc. I also loved seeing more of new characters, and more from characters who had never really been on page before, like David the cop. It was also great to see more of Jordan's friends, who pop up now and then, but who had a bigger part here. Sean was interesting, and I'm intrigued to see how his storyline continues. There was also the addition – though brief, here – of Jordan's sister, Katie. There was a lot of scope for these guys to fill, and it was done really well, adding a sense of familiarity but also an expanding, growing world, to the series.
Jordan and Edra's relationship grows with every book in the series. Here, they're apart from about 80% of the book, but that's for a reason, and it has a way of expanding their relationship even further. To see the growth of their bond and connection.
There were even some new creatures added to the mix, with the clever reminder that – as mentioned throughout the series – each city or state has a different range of Mythos depending on how the split of Tariko occurred. Here, we're introduced to new dragons – Yay! – and creepy half-human half-spider creatures that may or may not appear in my dreams tonight. (I hope not!) Then, of course, we have the vampire enclaves, which are different to Ardel and his niece.

OVERALL
I love how Nichols manages to include such complex continuity with the rest of the series while creating new experiences and new creatures to expand upon the worldbuilding. From Jordan and Edra's relationship, to how they function as a cop/Knight, to the situations they face, there's always something new and exciting. I can't wait for the next book, where I expect another visit to LA, perhaps with an army, the reclaiming of a sword and sister, and maybe even getting rid of Bud? Though, that last one might be too much to ask for.

“It felt as though he'd been fighting his entire life to be accepted. To be given permission to love without being hated for it. And he was tired. He was so f*cking tired of it all.”

4.5 Stars. Audiobook. Excellent series following the same couple. Great world building, great romance, great action and external drama, great narration. Magic, shifters, humans. Worlds collided 10 years ago and beings from another dimension enter contemporary Earth. Excellent pacing with the events unfolding in a rational way, A leads to B naturally while we learn the world and meet the inhabitants, really well done. Such an interesting story with a wonderful balance of action, light angst, light drama, medium spice and lovely mated romance.
Binged all seven books back to back, congruence is perfect, no tedious recap. Recommend reading at least close together since there are quite a few characters. I usually need a break after book 3/4, but not here, I kept going and never got bored. Stayed interesting the entire time, absolutely enjoyable journey from strangers to everything, we see it all, including two epilogues! Two!
Narration by Roberto Scarlatto is excellent, varied voices, good emotion interjected into the words.
Vanity and Other Monsters is the fourth book in T.J. Nichols’ excellent Mytho series. This is a connected series following a single couple and with extensive world building, so you are definitely going to want to read these in order. I realized when I was about to start reading this one that somehow I had missed book 3, Envy and Other Cravings. I debated trying to go back and pick that one up first, and in the end I decided to just forge ahead without it. I read the blurb and some reviews for that book and between that and the background Nichols provides here, it was enough that I could follow along with this story. But again, if you are a first time reader, you definitely are going to want to start with book one, Lust and Other Drugs.
I am jumping right into the next one, so this will be brief. dual pov 3rd P strict kidnapping torture Carlin Howard writer outs Edra and Jordan Off page insinuation of SA rising tensions between bigots and Mythos/pro-mythos

Jordan finally stepped up as a partner, yet for the largest chunk of the book they were apart... 🤔
He was less of a one-track mind sex pest & more a loving boyfriend! I still do wish he'd taken a pig's head for Edra regardless...
The dragon ate the vampire in one bite, so he DID have time to get his sword! I don't like that the author keeps singling out things that neither get resolved nor sorted out... it's becoming a recurring theme & I'm not a fan!
The thing with Katie was not that unexpected 🤷♀️
Yet another female character whose only purpose is to be a villain 🙄🙄🙄🙄
WHY do female authors of romance hate women so much... that shit should be studied!
I think the author should team up or learn from other authors about how to write good smut scenes, because the sex scenes are blander than just adding a pinch of salt & thinking the food is seasoned 😬
& someone, somewhere may be able to explain to me WHY exactly is Jordan the top?!? I ain't buying it for a second... that boy gives off bottom trying to top energy! Maybe that's why the sex is so underwhelming. He's a 2mn man, who sticks it in, pumps it twice & is done! NOPE 🥴
Let Edra have his moment in the sun... so far all the sex scenes have been copy & paste... let's shake it up a bit! Variety is the spice of life!
I kinda like that the Captain seems to be becoming more level-headed & I may well be wrong, but is it David (I can't remember his name)?!? The other cop who always pops his head up to have a chat with Jordan doesn't seem like such a bad guy...
Still too many untied plotlines & the author keeps piling it up instead of clearing some up. I have a bad feeling that this is going to turn into one of those where suddenly all the connections are dotted in the last 20mns of the last book, making it feel rushed & unsatisfying, but we'll see!
Again... it's worth it to read/listen for the overall story, the romance leaves a lot to be desired IMO. the sex is not only repetitive, boring as all hell & blink & you'll miss it!
If I'm honest, I had a bit of trepidation going into Vanity And Other Monsters because I read the first three in quick succession and there's been a bigger gap between them coming out and this book being published. I shouldn't have worried. This is actually my favourite of the series so far. As soon as I started the first chapter I was drawn straight back into Jordan and Edra’s fascinating world where mythos and supernaturals live alongside humans. All’s not well, though. The unrest and investigation insinuating themselves into Jordan and Edra's lives is bringing new levels of tension and complications. Edra's been sent to LA on what could be a fool's errand, whilst Jordan's left behind in San Francisco to maintain the delicate balance of being the human mytho liaison and a lesser dragon mate. The overarching series plot develops at pace as the Jordan's investigations reveal more of the mystery, all whilst he's still learning more about mytho culture and navigating his way through notoriety - so he's also learning just how far he can test his own resilience whilst Edra's away. Edra himself is going through a time of it in LA, too. The dragons and vampires he meets there certainly keep him on his toes.
I love this kind of imaginative urban fantasy. Great world-building, well-crafted characters, solid mystery to solve, sweet romance…yep, love it! There's a (figurative, not literal) bomb dropped right at the end, though,so I now can't wait for book 5…bring it on! 5*
An ARC was provided by GRR. This is my honest review.
I love this series, and am collecting it in paperback. I quickly get absorbed in each new book, and am now hanging out for the next one. I love how Jordan has to navigate mythos society without Edra’s help for a lot of this book and the learning curve that goes with it. With the other arcing plot, I’d recommend reading the series from the beginning.
I love how both Edra and Jordan get out of their depth in this story, and how Jordan can tell through their bond when Edra’s in trouble. I like how Jordan has become more of a part of mytho society, and the role he takes on in this story. Although everything has a price, and I wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of Ardel.
I like how one of Jordan’s friends is getting involved with a mytho too, and hopefully human/mytho relationships will become more common. I love how his cat, Sinner, misses Edra.
The vampires are a very real threat, and I love the scenes where Jordan sends help, and how that pans out, although it’s going to have consequences later. I love the politics of this world, and the checks and balances in place which I suspect are going to fall over very soon. I don’t trust Ardel, the Elf King, or the Straga, and it’s a given that whatever happens Jordan and Edra are going to be caught in the middle of it.
The mix of relationship and action/crime are well balanced. The action scenes are page turning, and I like how no one escapes unscathed.
*A series to be read in order* I'm really enjoying how the series is progressing to far. Edra and Jordan's relationship has become so much more meaningful to each of them, though I don't know if they realise until they're forced to spend days apart. Edra has to go to LA for a few days to try and sort out the problem with the vampire population but it's left their home city without it's knight, something Jordan is made aware of by those in power. It's dramatic in places as plans are revealed, injuries incurred and roles taken on. The plot of what's going on across the series is also getting more intense as the tensions between the supernatural and human population rises, not helped by Edra and Jordan's relationship revelation, the vampire's plans become known thanks to Edra though not without pain, and Jordan's position between the human and supernatural world/policing departments gets a lot more complicated. Fans of the series will enjoy the progress of the story and relationship. The two MC's have become more reliant on each other, Jordan especially understanding more about what it is to be mated to Edra. TJ's world building is really enjoyable with how they've blended two worlds together and speaks about how acceptance is different all over the world, similar to RL. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
Vanity and Other Monsters is book 4 in the Mythos series. It is not a standalone book but is a great read, taking the Mythos story to the next level. The detective and the knight find themselves being used and put in danger while they are separated. Jordan is stuck back in San Francisco while Edra is on a mission to Los Angeles with a magical geas forcing him on. There is a lot more magic in use by all the mythos Jordan comes across than he realised. A lot of it for no good at all, particularly when it is being used to coerce others or worse. The fact that there is not enough magic to go around is going to be a significant driver in this episode and beyond.
As with earlier books in the series, we get to find more about the world of the mythos when it comes to greater dragons, ogres and vampires. The collapse of their world into ours with the accompanying losses and sorrow is a powerful theme throughout the series and gains more depth here. Don’t expect to get all the answers here as there is a lot more to come. There is also a cliffhanger ending that leaves us wanting more. This is such an amazing series and this book really delivers.
This is book four in the Mythos series, and if you haven’t already read the previous books, definitely start there! The world building is deftly done throughout, with each subsequent book revealing more about the world of the original mythos as well as the nuances of the world now shared (not always easily) by mythos and humans. This installment is no exception, and it’s a little heartbreaking as well as deeply interesting to learn more about all the mythos’ have lost. In addition to the world building, there’s plenty to be drawn into plot-wise here: Edra and Jordan have perils to face, questions to answer, and delicate balances in mytho/human relations (and their own relationship) to solve. Edra being in LA with Jordan stepping up in San Francisco added plenty of interesting wrinkles as well as, of course, additional peril. I love both of them as characters, and I can’t get enough of their adventures together, so I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
I’ve read many of TJ Nichols’ series and my favorite by far is the Mytho set of books. The newest is Vanity and Other Monsters. It was such an exciting story, with Edra facing an unknown danger in LA and Jordan dealing with the media frenzy over his relationship with Edra, that I read it in one sitting. Without giving anything away, Edra’s situation away from his support network was harrowing. It was interesting to see a familiar character in a new setting. It was also rewarding to see Jordan step into being the main point of contact for all things paranormal in San Francisco. Needless to say, he was more than capable of the job. I had hoped that with the book titles involving the seven deadly sins there would be seven books in this richly imagined world. Sadly, it looks as though there is only one more. A minor irritant for me was the use of Australian words in a novel set in the US, even one with the addition of a paranormal world merging with our reality.
This series is seriously addicting. Sometimes as a series matures, it experiences slow spots or declining excitement levels. That is certainly not the case here. Book 4 is as interesting and compelling as the first (and 2nd and 3rd) book was. Each book builds on the ones before with intricate world-building and character development. I don't want to say anything about what happens, because I hate spoilers, but this book had me holding my breath waiting to see what would happen. You need to read books 1-3 before this one to get the complete story of the people, places, and plots. The only bad thing about this book is it ended and now I have to wait for the next one.
I received an ARC and this is my honest, voluntary review.
Thank you for arc read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. This time when the thieves strike Carly is framed while Edra was in LA, fulfilling the geas compelled on him. Leaving Jordan in San Francisco dealing with the fallout from both mythos and humans over their mating. Again just where does anybody have the rights to tell, what or who somebody can love.. hypocrite at it's finest! Times is changing maybe it's time for the ruling powers to change within as well, unlike forcing Edra to go alone, while cornering Jordan to be acting knight..from his side Jordan works out fragmented ideas on just what is the LA nest up to.
Vanity and other Monsters is the fourth in the Mytho series and best read in order. The world building is vast and well done. The series follows the same couple, Edra and Jordan. Edra is called to LA, leaving Jordan behind to deal whatever comes up in San Francisco. I loved they was they could both feel when one needed help. I loved learning more about the Mytho world, vampires, ogres and dragons! There is a cliffhanger that will leave you wanting more, but overall, a brilliant addition to the Mytho world. Well written with addicting pacing that kept me engaged. I literally could not put it down!
I am loving this series so much, I can't wait to start book 5. The connection between Edra and Jordan is growing so much stronger on all levels and I am really enjoying seeing it transform the way it is. This book had plenty going on and I don't want to put it down, needing to know what was coming next. The politics between the Mythos is interesting and complicated, and Jordan is only just starting to understand the ins and outs of everything. Now he's a knight I'm sure he's in for plenty more lessons. Edra's trip to LA didn't work out they way they hoped and they are in for a lot more trouble in the next book. I can't wait to see what happens next.
Edra and Jordan adventure continue with more danger, secrets and more hidden agenda that will make their situation more difficult. They are separated by a dangerous mission in which Edra is sent on and he gets alive from it thanks to the help Jordan sends. The adrenaline is coursing as the events progress and the motives are revealed from a very complicated web in which innocent ones were captured. It was exhilarating and packed with danger and choices that changed the entire perspective. I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to see what happens next.
LA Vamps are out for blood, mytho blood to be exact. More magic, more power and more blood for beauty. This could be the worlds downfall. Jordan and Edra are the Knights guarding and protecting San Francisco from an LA hostile takeover. Troupes comes from all angles as Jordan tries to cover for Edra while Edra fights for his life to try and negotiate peace. There is no peace! There will be no peace! Especially when the truth comes out about why the Vampires want control.
This one has Edra and Jordan separated by schemers who wish them ill. It means we get to see more of their individual talents come to the fore as well as getting to see both LA and San Francisco in this world. Things continue to deteriorate and Jordan is dealing with the fallout from his relationship with Edra becoming public. Another excellent entry in the series and as always I'm left anxiously awaiting the next volume.
Vanity and Other Monsters is book 4 in the Mythos series. It is not a stand alone and should be read in order. Their is amazing world building done throughout this series. Edra and Jordan have perils to face, questions to answer, and delicate balances in mytho/human relations to solve. There is plenty of action and drama here to keep the reader turning page after page. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next.
I loved it. It was interesting getting to know the differences in the species. Edra going to LA to do what is asked of him and Jordan doing his job and becoming a Knight in his mate’s absence. I loved seeing more Greater Dragons in this book.
I’m not a fan of cliff hangers and this one has a bit of one at the end. I’ll put off judgement depending on how long of a wait it is until the next book.
This is the continuation of the story of Edra and Jordan. It is the 4th book in the Mytho series. I love this series - it would be best to read them in order. With every addition, the story just gets better. I love this world of vampires, elfs and other things that go bump in the night. The action will keep you turning the pages. Loved learning more about this world. Definitely recommended.
I received this book as an Arc and I am happily reviewing it voluntarily.
Jordan and Edra are working apart in this edition of the series. Edra being sent to LA to deal with vampires and Jordan staying home in SF.
There are murders and frame ups and action! The feeling of danger in every situation because you don't know what's going to happen with powerful vampires and Mythos.
A great edition to the series. The fun never stopped. Looking forward to the next one!!!
Dang can these two ever catch a break? It’s like they get no time to fully relax into their relationship. This one has a little more world building. We learn about the conspiracy that has been happening in the background this entire time, and we watch these two get closer even apart. We see J fully step into the Mythos world and getting a better understanding of his mate. Lots of stuff happening you don’t know who to trust. On to the next.
It’s frustrating to see Edra and Jordan being manipulated by their superiors and sad that no one really cares about their wellbeing. The LA vampires are scary and Edra has no back up. I love the dragons a little more as they seem to be the only ones care enough to help the lesser dragon. I’m devouring this series and I am so tempted to take time off just to finish it. It’s that good.
This has to be my favourite in the series. Jordan is starting to come into his own and whilst there isn’t a lot of time with Edra and Jordan, it doesn’t take away from their bond becoming more solid.
The world building continues to be built with the inclusion of LA, and the cliffhanger and loose ends leaves it open for the next book.
The great world-building continues ... with additional insights into the sexuality of trolls! This book feels like the first in a new trilogy plot-arc involving baddies vampires from L.A. and the promise of a human-mytho wedding to be held at the mytho locus of power keeps me hanging on for the next book in the series.
See, I thought I was going to be super angry about Edra and Jordan being apart for most of this book but it was so damned compelling that I forgot to be mad. So there's that, I guess. I was totally expecting the end--I mean, not every detail, but for sure the cliffhangery bit. Excited to dive into the next book!
Usually, by 4th installment the world feels too much and I expect the author to overcomplicate it. But this development is gorgeous! I'm not sure whether I'm more interested in the story or the relationship.
Dragons are... interesting. And scary. A lot of scary things in this world, and I love seeing how Jordan and Edra at this point are lighthouses for each other.
He needs to go to L.A. to stop the vampires and it is not going to be easy. He needs to try as it would save lives if the vampires could be destroyed. Can he do it? How will he do it? Will they try to stop him? Can they stop him? See who will come out on top
