Wow. I've been a fan of both T.J. Nichols, and the Familiar Mates series, since my first book by then, and they never disappoint me. This book blew me away. I think it's just become my new favourite of the Familiar Mates series, which surprised me, because I already had a firm favourite. But, in a series where every book has only added more to the overall world-building of the series, this one managed to add even more depth and dynamic.
CHARACTERS
Both MC's were incredibly well written, with their own unique personalities and quirks, their own problems, hopes and goals. I quickly attached to both rich-but-isolated Ethan, and poor-but-independent Axel. Together, they were sometimes like oil and water, and at others, like the perfect blend of vanilla ice cream, strawberry sauce and a crisp wafer. An ideal combination.
I loved how Axel could be snarky and more self-aware than Ethan, but how Ethan was self-confident and forward looking than Axel. Together, they complimented each other well. While their families were a sticking point for both, they dealt with them differently, and were both proven slightly wrong in their estimations of how their family would react. While Axel was more bull-in-a-china-shop, Ethan was all about being prepared and making an impact. Yet, neither got the result they wanted, but still supported the other through the heartache. They way they leaned on each other, sometimes by instinct, sometimes from just knowing the other would be there, was beautiful.
The growth of both characters – both as individuals, and as a couple – throughout the novel was incredible! From page one, we saw their personalities, their hopes and dreams, and their problems crystal clearly. As the book progressed, we saw how they struggled through those problems, that they kept shoving aside their hopes and dreams to make their parents happy, and how it was never good enough. Axel craved freedom, but hadn't the means to get it. Ethan had the means, but the pressure on his shoulders made it impossible. Together, they managed to provide exactly what the other person needed, even if they didn't understand or appreciate that, at first.
The chemistry was...*chef's kiss*...utterly perfect. Sizzling hot, as strangers who keep bumping into each other. An inferno, as an uncomplicated one-night stand. Intese, as they began to doubt and question each other, after discovering the mate bond. Feisty, as they argued and worked their way through the problem together. Warm and comforting, as they found common ground. And back to scorching, as they realised that they would do anything to keep this bond.
PLOT
This is the first time we're learning about the Shadow Board – for obvious reasons – who are a formed-by-the-richest-of-the-rich alternative to the Coven. While the Coven want to protect all shifters and witches, the Shadow Board are – as the name suggests – shadowy, and not afraid to break the law to get what they want.
The addition of them was super interesting, and how they wove through Ethan and Axel's relationship – affecting how they functioned, threatening their bond, then their lives – was a great plot that was woven throughout the entire novel. It never felt like a convenient blockade that was only there to bring them together as a couple, and I loved the depth of background it was given, and the promise that there will be more to explore of them later.
The story also explored some new shifters and witch gifts, such as a fox-shifter, and Ethan's ability to sense impressions through touch. It's such a broad ability with a lot of promise and possibility, and I love that it was well explored, from its limitations to potential future uses, throughout the book. I also love that the series is consistent in showing shifters in both human and animal forms in multiple instances, acknowledging both aspects without neglecting the other.

OVERALL
I loved everything about this book. The characters...the chemistry...the plotting and pacing...and how the world-building of the entire series was expanded appropriately. There were no plot gaps that I wanted to see expanded, no characters left floundering in uncertainty, and no rushed endings. Everything was utterly perfect for the story and the characters, and gave me everything I'd been wanting and hoping for, as I was reading.
Were there faults? A few. This was an ARC copy, so there were some minor editing issues (a missing word/letter here or there) and one or two instances of slipping into present tense, but other than that, this was exactly to the standard I expect of Nichols. Which is always excellent.
I loved the addition of the Epilogue, three months later, and how we were introduced to a new character who shows great promise for a future book. I also really love that Nichols gives us the information that the character will return in their own book, later in the series. I look forward to seeing the plot of this novel expanded on, in their book.

“He caught the bitterness and realized that he sounded like his father.
That was about the last thing he wanted.
A rich witch as a sugar daddy…now that was something he would like.”
“While Axel had lived, Ethan had watched from behind glass. Able to see the intense emotions in others but never experiencing them for himself.”
