Fated mates...there's only one problem: their families hate each other. With old money comes old hatreds, and the fight to survive will take everything the familiar bond offers witch and shifter.
Ethan Lumin has followed the plan laid out for him since the day he was born. As part of that plan, he needs a familiar before he turns thirty so he can take his place on the Shadow Board as expected. But he wants more than a bound shifter who’s only interested in his family’s power and money.
Axel Hollins learned a long time ago that family comes first, shifters come second, and witches come last. He wants nothing more than to escape the family business, but even the idea of becoming an artist is frowned upon.
A chance meeting leads to a one-night stand and waking up to find that he’s now the familiar to the richest witch in London.

I really enjoyed the premise of a fox shifter and a witch unintentionally bonding to their familiar/mate during a one night stand. I loved the magical elements and descriptions of magic and how it was shared between the two MCs as their bond strengthened. However, the book fell a bit short for me at the end. When the witch's parents find out about the bonding...let's just say they do not handle it well and it was a bit over the top. I also felt there were a number of loose ends in terms of how their magic is shared and the issues that came from shifting once bonded. Still enjoyed the book, but would have liked a tighter ending.
~3.5 Loved: the premise, different types of shifters, magical abilities of witches and familiars - a totally different approach from what I read in the past. Likable MCs, dynamics and chemistry between them. MCs choosing their love and each other despite prejudice and family pressure. Niggles: based on the blurb I expected Ethan to be more mature and have a plan. Instead, he was totally under his father's thumb. It would work better if he was 20, not 30. The ending felt rushed. MCs got their HEA but the there was no resolution to the bad guys side plot. I chose the book based on the blurb not realizing it was part of the series so was as clueless as MCs about what's going on and how serious the threat is. The action towards the end came as a surprise and I was disappointed that no explanation/ reasoning was given. Maybe more was explained in previous books or will be explained in the future. The story works as a stand-alone but not all questions are answered.
I've missed a couple of the middle books in this series, but definitely need to go back and pick them up as it seems this series continues to get better with each one! I really liked Ethan and Axel and how their relationship was exactly what each of them needed to come into their own and break free from their family ties. The magical world has definitely grown and there is so much more interesting powers for both witches and familiars. It almost makes me want to live in Nichols head, as they keep pulling out these fantastical new ides! Great world building and a wonderful romance
This was a super fun book. I really enjoyed the romance in this one, it complimented the characters and their personas so well and it was super cute to read about. I also loved the setting in this one, it was very fun to read about. I just wanted a little more from this book but overall I really enjoyed it.
**I received an arc of this book and this is my honest opinion**
The Billionaire’s Familiar is the latest installment in T.J. Nichols’ Fated Mates series. While some of the books do feature connecting themes and side characters, this story stands alone quite well. I think the story is enhanced if you come in know the basics of the world building, but all the key things are explained here and you should be able to jump right in. I have read most of this series, as well as the spin off Outcast Pack series, and I think this was my favorite of the group. What I really liked is the way Nichols takes the established world building, but really develops it in interesting new ways in this story. Given how many books are out, I was pleasantly surprised that the author was able to still find new directions to take the world building. In this case, we learn more about this group of wealthy elites who operate outside the bounds of the normal rules for witches and familiars, as well as more about the particular magic involved with fox shifters. It really brought some fun new developments to the series and I think it was a great way to shake things up a bit.
If the author had left out one, unnecessary, sex scene, she could have spent a bit more time expanding on the plot of this book. Did these two characters get the training they needed to so when Alex shifts it's easier on Ethan? I'm assuming so, but we're not given that information. I wanted more information about Ethan's parents and their behavior and over the top reactions to Ethan and Alex mating. I just wanted more to this story.
I had a good time with this. It’s a little cheesy and over the top at times, but it was a lot of fun. I liked the MCs. They were good together and had some great chemistry. I thought the shared usage (idk, is this a spoiler?) of magic was really cool, and I wish the author had gone a little harder in that direction, that the book dealt with it a little more. It was well paced and I liked the plot as it developed. The world building I thought was interesting and I’m keen to see where it goes in other books.
Thanks to GayRomanceReviews for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

The Billionaire's Familiar (Familiar Mates, 08) by T.J. Nichols ★★★★★ 3rd person, dual character POV Themes: MM, Romance, Shifter, Fated Mates, Billionaire, Familiar, Magic, Family Politics, Power Struggle, Homophobia Triggers: mentions of homophobic and witch-phobic/shifter-phobia parents, mild violence, attempted murder, a character disowned by family, parental pressure Genre: MM, Romance, Shifter, Fated Mates
Wow. I've been a fan of both T.J. Nichols, and the Familiar Mates series, since my first book by then, and they never disappoint me. This book blew me away. I think it's just become my new favourite of the Familiar Mates series, which surprised me, because I already had a firm favourite. But, in a series where every book has only added more to the overall world-building of the series, this one managed to add even more depth and dynamic.
CHARACTERS Both MC's were incredibly well written, with their own unique personalities and quirks, their own problems, hopes and goals. I quickly attached to both rich-but-isolated Ethan, and poor-but-independent Axel. Together, they were sometimes like oil and water, and at others, like the perfect blend of vanilla ice cream, strawberry sauce and a crisp wafer. An ideal combination.
I loved how Axel could be snarky and more self-aware than Ethan, but how Ethan was self-confident and forward looking than Axel. Together, they complimented each other well. While their families were a sticking point for both, they dealt with them differently, and were both proven slightly wrong in their estimations of how their family would react. While Axel was more bull-in-a-china-shop, Ethan was all about being prepared and making an impact. Yet, neither got the result they wanted, but still supported the other through the heartache. They way they leaned on each other, sometimes by instinct, sometimes from just knowing the other would be there, was beautiful.
The growth of both characters – both as individuals, and as a couple – throughout the novel was incredible! From page one, we saw their personalities, their hopes and dreams, and their problems crystal clearly. As the book progressed, we saw how they struggled through those problems, that they kept shoving aside their hopes and dreams to make their parents happy, and how it was never good enough. Axel craved freedom, but hadn't the means to get it. Ethan had the means, but the pressure on his shoulders made it impossible. Together, they managed to provide exactly what the other person needed, even if they didn't understand or appreciate that, at first.
The chemistry was...*chef's kiss*...utterly perfect. Sizzling hot, as strangers who keep bumping into each other. An inferno, as an uncomplicated one-night stand. Intese, as they began to doubt and question each other, after discovering the mate bond. Feisty, as they argued and worked their way through the problem together. Warm and comforting, as they found common ground. And back to scorching, as they realised that they would do anything to keep this bond.
PLOT This is the first time we're learning about the Shadow Board – for obvious reasons – who are a formed-by-the-richest-of-the-rich alternative to the Coven. While the Coven want to protect all shifters and witches, the Shadow Board are – as the name suggests – shadowy, and not afraid to break the law to get what they want.
The addition of them was super interesting, and how they wove through Ethan and Axel's relationship – affecting how they functioned, threatening their bond, then their lives – was a great plot that was woven throughout the entire novel. It never felt like a convenient blockade that was only there to bring them together as a couple, and I loved the depth of background it was given, and the promise that there will be more to explore of them later.
The story also explored some new shifters and witch gifts, such as a fox-shifter, and Ethan's ability to sense impressions through touch. It's such a broad ability with a lot of promise and possibility, and I love that it was well explored, from its limitations to potential future uses, throughout the book. I also love that the series is consistent in showing shifters in both human and animal forms in multiple instances, acknowledging both aspects without neglecting the other.

OVERALL
I loved everything about this book. The characters...the chemistry...the plotting and pacing...and how the world-building of the entire series was expanded appropriately. There were no plot gaps that I wanted to see expanded, no characters left floundering in uncertainty, and no rushed endings. Everything was utterly perfect for the story and the characters, and gave me everything I'd been wanting and hoping for, as I was reading. Were there faults? A few. This was an ARC copy, so there were some minor editing issues (a missing word/letter here or there) and one or two instances of slipping into present tense, but other than that, this was exactly to the standard I expect of Nichols. Which is always excellent. I loved the addition of the Epilogue, three months later, and how we were introduced to a new character who shows great promise for a future book. I also really love that Nichols gives us the information that the character will return in their own book, later in the series. I look forward to seeing the plot of this novel expanded on, in their book.

Favourite Quote
“He caught the bitterness and realized that he sounded like his father. That was about the last thing he wanted. A rich witch as a sugar daddy…now that was something he would like.”
“While Axel had lived, Ethan had watched from behind glass. Able to see the intense emotions in others but never experiencing them for himself.”
Most of T.J. Nuchols books are a delight for me ... so imagine my surprise, when I needed to start this one twice ... yep, me too.
But maybe that was more due to my mood, then due to the book.
After I got through the first 15% - which were a bit too whiny for me - I really enjoyed how they explored their relationship. I liked that they addressed the upcoming issues and tried to find solutions together. There was not pure fated mate pullout a conscious decision to try, which I really loved.
I enjoyed that they took their time to get to know each other, so I was rather bewildered when we arrived at 85, 90% with a whole list of open issues and nearly no time to solve them. Which lead to a rather quick and hurried ending.
So, the beginning and the end were a bit difficult for me but I loved the part in the middle 😉
All in all a good read which I enjoyed.
An ARC was provided by GRR and I am happy to give my honest opinion.
Firstly let me say I got this book from gay romance reviews and this is me leaving my honest review This is the first book that I’ve actually read in the series and I’ve got to say I thoroughly enjoyed it Ethan is the son of a witch who has planned out his life since before he was born. Ethan who has unique powers really doesn’t have a say in anything his father decides. But now it seems that because he hasn’t settled down and he’s nearly 30 he needs to put things in place so he can get a place on the shadow board. And his dad has plans of course. It’s not very often that Ethan notices people around him but he did notice the sexy guy who was fixing a panel of glass as they walked into the building. There was just something about him, his father notice and told him to hurry up. But Ethan made sure he got the name of the company that he works for. He knew he wouldn’t ring it But he wants to. Axel wanted to be an artist. He was saving every penny he could so he could get his own place and the dream was one day getting his own studio. As it was at the moment he was working for his father replacing windows repairing Windows, then he had a second job that his family knew nothing about because every time he mentioned leaving his mum would get emotional his father would come up with excuses. But Axel had finally had enough. He noticed a good looking man in a suit going into the office even to the point of giving him a flirty look but he knew that was out of his League. Axel wasn’t surprised when he walked by. That night as he was driving his car on the rideshare app he was surprised when he picked up said good looking man. It wasn’t long before they were flirting with each other and they took it back to Ethan‘s apartment. Ethan was glad that he didn’t know who he was, he just wanted one night of bliss but that night changed everything for both of them. Because it seemed that they were mates. How would the families react to this news?? Ethan knew his dad would not be impressed because Axel was also his Familia he was a fox shifter and this changed everything. Also it seemed that Axel’s family had something against witches. Oh this should be fun.
Oh my gosh my heart went out to these two because you could feel the struggle that they were going through but neither of them could deny the attraction that was between them. I really really enjoyed the banter. But I really totally dislike Ethan‘s father and mother. And you’ll know why near the end of this book I enjoyed the storyline it was a different storyline for me but I loved it I totally enjoyed this book. Look forward to the next book in the series
I’m already a huge fan of this author and series, and loved Ethan and Axel’s story, which adds the threat of the Shadow Board. Foxes being magical and the added complications to a familiar bond was an interesting twist, and I enjoyed how it played out.
Ethan and Axel come from different worlds, but they have common ground in that they are bucking family tradition and expectations. I liked how both men had no clue as to their families’ real power, and how they’re drawn to each other, and forge a complete bond before either realises what the other is. I liked how they have different skill sets yet work well together balancing each other out. The Fates knew what they were doing bringing these two together. I also loved how their bond grows over time, and with it their power.
I like how Ethan finds out the truth about his family, and their reaction to his and Axel’s familiar bond is nothing like he imagined. I loved the showdown and how Ethan and Axel both react, and protect each other. It’s wonderfully tense, action packed scene, with very real consequences.
The Coven often plays a part in these stories, and I liked their stance in this one. I suspect the Shadow Board’s world view isn’t exactly what they think it is.
I enjoyed Axel and Ethan’s HEA, which fit them and their dreams perfectly. I also liked the hint of more to come, and I hope they get to play a part in bringing down the Shadow Board.
The Billionaire’s Familiar is set in an England where witches and shifters exist. This is a world where humans, witches and shifters live alongside each other in an uneasy coexistence. The humans are unaware in the main while the witches and shifters have a complicated history. This story adds further developments / complications to Familiar Mates' world.
It starts with Ethan arriving at work with his controlling father. What feels like a typical day for Ethan is going to be anything but when he catches the eye of a glazier replacing a broken office front window. When they meet face to face at the end of a long day’s work it’s not long before they are skin to skin. What looks like the beginning of a brief and passionate liaison between Ethan and Axel morphs into something so much more when they realise they are fated mates. There are going to be obstacles on all fronts, some of them drenched in blood.
Together they are so much stronger and can begin to realise their dreams. Dreams they thought would only ever be dreams.
Axel and Ethan are well drawn characters it is easy to relate to. Their relationship is prickly at times but real. Together they find they can take on the world in ways neither they or the world could have predicted. I look forward to meeting them again in the Familiar Mates series.
The Billionaire’s Familiar by author T.J. Nichols is the 8th book in the Familiar Mates series. You do not have to read this book in order to get this particular story, I have not, and I was not lost. Though I am going to be going back to see what I missed, this story is AMAZING. I loved the character connection, the world they are in, and the complexities that come with that world.
Ethan he has been working for his dad since graduating from college. He is almost 30. His life has been planned out even before he was born. Now he needs to choose a familiar. He is worried about what is appropriate and what is not.
I liked Ethan he is a character that blossoms with his familiar.
Axel- he knows family comes first. Shifters come second, and witches come last. He wants to become an artist and escape his family, but that is easier said than done.
I really liked Axel he has many layers to his character, and he is perfect for Ethan.
Overall, this is a story I couldn’t put down. I loved every second of it and want more! This book is going on my keeper shelf for sure.
For most of the book nothing much happens and they are just fumbling around, trying to figure out their relationship. It wasn't boring exactly, it was just rather mundane, like any other couple figuring out their compatibility, likes, dislikes and whether or not they will kill each other one day. I don't know why exactly, but I expected more action for them or something more exciting than two people learning to co-habit. The last third was very exciting, but even then I felt cheated, because it got swept under a rug and they just moved on? An action scene and then a quick re-cap, that this and that happened and now it is this and that? For the most part, I liked the characters, even when they kept spinning in circles and fumbling around, but can't say I felt any strong connection between them. But the point is to be happy and content in life, right? They totally achieved that one.
**I was provided an ARC of this book from the GRR for an honest review**
This was an enjoyable book where fated mates found each other and happiness despite adversary. Overall, it had a good balance of plot and steam, but not a lot of acceptance. I personally had a hard time following the plot as this was the first book from this particular series that I had read. I loved the fact that Ethan went against norms and expectations of his family to find happiness and acceptance. I appreciated Axel's willingness to leave his life behind to find his true destiny. These two showing love conquers all and that fated mates are better than all else was good. Some things towards the end could have used better clarification before jumping into the epilogue. However, the book did pique my curiosity and I do intend to read more to learn about the shadow board and whether it can be defeated. i will eventually try to read more to follow the concepts in this book. Overall, pretty good, but it may have been better with a bit more clarification. Still worth the time to read and enjoy.
Ethan Lumin has always followed the path set for him by his father. Now as he approaches thirty, he must select a familiar, but he wants more than just a bound shifter. Axel Hollins, a fox shifter, wants more than to follow in his father’s footsteps as a glazier. Chance meetings between the two results in a one night stand that is mutually pleasurable, but has unexpected consequences. They two are now mated and their families hate each other.
Ethan and Axel could not be more different. Ethan had money while Axel had none. Ethan was a lawyer while Axel was a glazier. Yet they also had a lot in common. Neither one was following their own dreams. They were, instead, subject to family pressure. Both consulted the council to break the bond, finding they could not. However, the chemistry between them was amazing and could not be denied. As the book progressed, we see the two bonding and they need that bond if they are to survive the coming hazards and danger. Action and peril increase steadily keeping us glued to the pages. You can’t help but route for a happy ending.
T.J. Nichols' latest book in the Familiar series introduces us to Axel and Ethan. Both from opposite ends of the community, Ethan is rich, favored and on his way to the top as a lawyer. Axel, on the other hand is a fox shifter and works for his father in their glazier business. They literally pass each other as Ethan is on his way to a meeting and Axel and his father are replacing a broken shop-front window. Eyes meet and the work of the Fates is set in motion. This story has it all. Love, angst, power, corruption, betrayal - everything that makes T.J.Nichols' stories so engrossing, intriguing and addictive. The corruption, hatred, narrow-mindedness that goes with the rich and powerful who think they can do what they want because they have money is so prominent in this story. To the point of cold-blooded murder. This book I just could not put down, but then that goes for every book I've read by this author. Highly recommended reading.
Thank you for the ARC read, I voluntarily give this book an honest review. Is it all inherit prejudice both their parts to assume the worse just because of their birth? It's freaking amazing that both families are controlling in their own way. Ooh we have we encounter anpther organization called the Shadow Board. That again the coven is willing to turn a blind eye, Ethan father is isn't above using his son, could be collateral damage for his greed and power as a witch with standing survive. If it had not been for the broken window. Ethan would have eventually bowed to his father's dreaded demands, while Axel would still be hiding behind his secrets. This took the meaning of work a mile in my shoes literal. Axel family don't trust witches but can you blame them? after all witch look at them as their animal familiar, nothing more. Axel has dreams that is nothing like his family. So when he does go out..It's why can't he settle down at his age. With what time.. It's so two sided all about the family and their needs. After a second chance encounter with the hottie from earlier, a night of fun is interrupt by mornings light.
As a long-time fan of fantasy and paranormal stories, I really enjoyed The Billionaire’s Familiar by TJ Nichols. It is set in the Familiar Mates’ world, along with the Outcast Pack series. What appealed to me the most about this book was the way the witch, Ethan, and the familiar, Axel, were fairly evenly matched when it came to magic ability, unlike other books where the witch is clearly more powerful. In many ways it is also a Cinderella story with the boy from the wrong side of the tracks winding up with the golden boy. It was entertaining to watch Axel try to adapt to Ethan’s wealthy world and to see Ethan begin to appreciate the traits that Axel developed growing up poor, which help to keep them alive when everything blows up in their faces (not really a spoiler). This is clearly the start of a new story arc set in Europe, as opposed to being set in the US and Australia in the other series by the author. I received a copy of this book for free and am voluntarily reviewing it.
This story is about choices, will they choose well? Ethan, has been a good son and compliantly followed the path laid out for his life. As his 30th birthday gets close where he must select a familiar so he can join the board, he realizes he wants to bond for love, not join with a familiar only interested in money and power. Axel, has his own ambitions and dreams. He understands 'family first', but he wants to follow his passion and become an artist. Their world was built on class, rules and expectations. Ethan and Axel meet under accidental circumstances. They have a one nighter and wake up bonded. The world sets the challenge. Ethan and Axel, must rise up meet the challenge and fight for their existence. Do they succeed? How do they choose? Good story from the beginning to their awkward meet. Great characters, fantastic storyline. Excellent story, well done! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The world the author builds in this series feels very realistic, not least because while witches and shifters exist, there’s little that is utopian or easy about how they relate to each other, or themselves. Politics, intrigue, and some fraught power dynamics are pretty much the order of the day, and the witch/familiar bond is by no means exempt from this process. Against this backdrop, the connection between Ethan and Axel— fated mates, witch and familiar, both from very different backgrounds in terms of class and status but remarkably similar in that they’re at the whims of controlling families, takes shape. I liked a lot of things about their dynamic, not least that they have to work to make it work, and that they find in each other the validation and support they won’t from anyone else in their lives.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
Loved, loved, loved Ethan and Axel!! I loved this world that the author has created! The Billionaire's Familiar is set in London. Witches and familiars coexist while humans are somewhat unaware. Ethan and Axel’s families are enemies. After a one-night stand, Axel wakes up to be the familiar of Ethan, a witch. Ethan is rich and Axel is a fox shifter that works for his father. They live in opposite ends of the community. I had a passionate dislike of Ethan’s father. Ethan’s father is controlling and would do anything for his greed. Axel’s family doesn’t trust witches. The story has a good mystery and danger. Overall, an excellent story! Really well written with great pacing that will hook you.
I loved the premise of a fox shifter and a witch accidentally bonding during a one-night stand. The characters were loveable, and the chemistry between the main characters really worked for me. The narrator did also a great job bringing the characters to life. That said, the ending felt too abrupt. Without the epilogue, it almost reads like a cliffhanger, and even with it, I felt like there were too many loose threads—especially around how the bond affected their magic and shifting. Since the book is supposed to be standalone-ish, I would’ve liked a stronger, more complete wrap-up. Still, it was an enjoyable read! Great characters, a compelling worldbuilding and an interesting plot that just needed a tighter finish.
Ethan and Axel story was interesting, full of mystery and danger as well as love and determination. They come from different worlds, their encounter is pure accidental but the attraction is instant. They should hate each other taking into account their families history, the way they are treated by the family. One night of passion changes everything, they have to learn to trust in each other, support each other and survive their families meetings. Their connection is explosive, they fall in love with each other and they learn to love and protect each other against danger and all who wants them harm. I really loved the story and I'm looking forward to see what happens next.
ARC Review – this is actually the first book I’ve read in this series and I thoroughly enjoyed it !! Classic tale of rich guy/poor guy and the expectations put on them by family….until one magical night !!! And that’s when the fun begins! Great story and plot and the world building is spot on. It’s no fairytale or fluffy type of book – there maybe discussions of mates & fates but there’s still work….that drew me into the story, that gritty-middle class-normality …. well, as normal as can be with magic and shifters thrown in !! heheheehe I’m now very curious on the other books in this series …..
I loved this. It’s my 1st from this author and I’m definitely going to be starting from the beginning of this series. This is a one night stand gone wrong when they end up being fated mates. We have Ethan the witch who has known nothing but money is power his whole life and Axel the shifter, working in the family business just trying to get from one day to the next. Neither family approves of there joining and we get to see lots of magical fighting and exploration as they try to figure out how they can make it work
Personally I have only read 1 other book in the series. This hasnt impacted on my enjoyment of this story. It can be read as a standalone.
Ethan feels resentful of his parents ruling his life. He feels that he has certain expectations on him due to his name. Also, his parents resent his magic. Axel just wants to be an artist, bit his parent are too controlling also, hes made to feel wasteful and ungrateful.
These two are perfect for one another, they show the other freedom and respect. When they actually work together they understand why foxes became hunted by witches.
Love this book ,,,,the chemistry between these two is wonderful Axel the fox has big dreams and they are not to continue to work for his dad but he want to work on his art but until then he must do what he has to to survive,,,,,,Ethan is a mage with magic that can read the emotions of any objects but he hates following his family and toes the line until he takes a taxi and meets up with his fated mate a beautiful man name Alex but they have a lot to go through if they want to stay together,,,,,I read this book for this author for my honest opinion
