How to Summon a Boyfriend

Rate this book
Herby
I needed a boyfriend to keep my father from marrying me off to a man handpicked by him. What better way to get one than to summon a demon? When I found a book of shadows in my grandfather's attic, I knew I'd found the answer, but something went wrong. Instead of summoning a demon, I ended up in hell. What was I supposed to do now?

Hades
Judging souls was boring. Ruling the underworld was boring. Everything was boring. I needed something to happen to keep me from going insane. I never imagined the fates would answer my unspoken prayer by dropping a human into the underworld, and I'd certainly never met a human quite like Herby. He confused me, amused me, and drove me crazy. Why else would I agree to be his boyfriend?

Note: This story was originally part of the Fate's Call Anthology - Manlove Edition. It has been revised and extended by 21,000 words.

Warning: Gay erotic romance. The material in this book contains explicit sexual content that is intended for mature audiences only. All characters involved are adults capable of consent, are over the age of eighteen, and are willing participants.

This was cute but that’s pretty much all I can say about it 😂🫠

Since I’m so sick it was a nice easy read to get through while in bed

This was a quick, fun read. Insta-everything, but Herby was adorable and charms almost everyone he meets. Hades and his brothers are a bit of a different take on their mythology. The story moved quickly and ended rather abruptly, leaving a little bit unfinished. This was my first read by this author and while there were quite a few errors in word usage, it was an entertaining story that was the distraction I was looking for in-between longer, more serious books.

a short read. but for the length of the book, the conflict in here was perfect. i love how weird and quirky Herby was! and how everybody(all things) just magnetted to him. and we have Hades...... yes i love him here.

i only had one complain..... i wanted an end scene with both of them...... and i want it longer/moreeee bc i didnt want them to end 😭

What in the Hades

Herby was trying to escape an arrange marriage. He thought summoning a demon who could pretend to be his boyfriend would do the trick. Unfortunately the summoning goes wrong and Herby finds himself in hell.

I enjoyed the beginning of this story. It was entertaining and then things went a bit sideways 🤷🏽‍♀️

Weird love

An easy and fun read with truly changed up Greek gods and a hapless human who finds himself caught up with Hades.

Herby is a very sweet guy with a pretty terrible family. His father is about to force him into marriage so he chooses to summon a demon to get out of it, but instead puts himself in the Underworld. There he finds that he fits in quite well and upon meeting a bewildered Hades soon strikes a deal to stay. But his cruel father isn't done with him and soon Hades and all the gods have to find out what is going on to put a stop to it.

Herby is very fun in the Underworld, delighting in learning about the place and loving to all of the people. He is genuine but always thought of as weird, but it makes him fit well with this different group. Hades enjoys his open honesty and delight and soon finds himself falling. It was a fun and easy romance with some predictability but no lack of enjoyment. The only surprise is that this isn't the start to a series, as it seems some good stories could come for Poseidon and Zeus as well. Only time will tell!

Well I know I DNFed this book a few months ago but I decided to give it another go. I think once I finally understand if an author writes in a super Insta love/Insta lust very fast paced relationship style I can change my mindset when reading a book. When I originally started this book, I did not realize that and so I was a little annoyed. It’s not the greatest book ever written, but it did what I wanted it to do. It was a nice little filler read that was quick and easy and I enjoyed how the two characters interacted.

Original review below

DNF @7%… that might seem a little too early to stop reading a book but I just could not get into the writing style or the characters POV. Herbie sounded like a child. Talking about people being rude when literally he just like dropped in the middle of hell. Story was a little all over the place.

This was an entertaining read and I liked a lot about it. I did have a couple of issues though. Some spelling issues right in the beginning. Talking about GAUGING someone's eyes out. Let me know how that works.

My biggest one was that they like decided to be boyfriends or whatever and then BAMM they have sex? Like OK. Don't get to know each other or anything. It really kind of pulled me out of the story. I realize its a fantasy, but they were not initially fated mates or something.

I did love Herby and how everyone just seemed to fall for his adorableness. I also liked the side characters.

Ok that was cute. Very easy read - finished in one sitting. Kinda whiplash-y on the smut scenes, like they just came out of nowhere, I almost thought this book was gonna just be 100% cute….you know, for a story about accidentally getting sent to hell instead of summoning a demon. But then BAM, smut lol. Gave it 4 stars because I’m easily entertained.

This was pretty good. Funny in some parts, cute in others and lots of uh ditzy moments.

There were some grammatical errors, but not too many. It was mostly a 4 star until I hit the end, because I literally HIT the end. I didn't even realize I was there until it said THE END. I guess I was expecting a bit more, but it was just over.

Nothing much more to say on that.

Herby finds a book with spells that he believes belonged to his grandfather. He uses one of the spells to summon a demon to pretend to be his boyfriend. Herby’s father wants him to marry someone that Herby can’t stand. However, things don’t quite go as planned and Herby ends up transported to Hell.

There, Herby meets Hades and falls for him. Hades thinks Herby is the most intriguing thing he’s encountered in ages. After they become an item, Herby disappears, TWICE!

This demon/human story was cute!

Herby doesn't want to marry the man his father has picked out for him so he decides to summon a demon boyfriend to get out of it. Somehow Herby summons himself to hell, which is Greek Hell, and meets Hades, the "demon" in charge of it all. Their attraction in instant and fated. Herby is a cute character, rather a "himbo" who I imagine speaks in a breathy voice and is generally loved by animals and everyone who is not related to him. Hades, is mostly a creep. Poseidon and Zeus also make appearances, and are also generally creeps. The plot is fairly simplistic and over before you even realize it. Nothing particularly angsty or fluffy about, low heat level.

This was a cute, funny, sexy little PNR!! Herby tries to summon a demon to force him to be his boyfriend so he doesn’t have to marry the man his father picked for him but the spell goes wrong and he finds himself in the Underworld. When he meets Hades, things change when the head guy can’t get enough of the strange little twink. He befriends “scary creatures” and enchants other gods and before he knows it, he’s bonded to Hades and on his way to a royal marriage.

The little plot twist with Herby’s father was actually pretty interesting. I liked the slight changes to mythology and I seriously cracked up at just how sweet Herby was with the traditional monsters of lore. And how he always offered to make mac and cheese for others. 🤣

Honestly, this was a perfect little novella to pass away an afternoon. Just enough spice, humor, and steam to keep me satisfied.

Very cute

This was a really fun and light read I enjoyed it very much. I loved the characters especially Herby he was so cute I just loved how everyone gravitated towards him and how easily he won people over. I loved Hades so much too an interesting take on the Greek god of the underworld. I loved the plot it starts out with Herby doing a ritual to summon a boyfriend to prevent his father from marrying him off it moves into a mostly light hearted fun read with a few bumps in the road I would read more of this for sure.

Herby kinda being ditzy and adorable and a bit nuts was great. Hades and the world and the characters were enjoyable and the whole idea of his dad being evil and Claude summoning more demons and all that was great.

1/5 on spice. 2/5 on kink. 1/5 on tears.

I'm sure the author spent a lot of time and effort on this book, but I have to say I did not like it. It started out OK, but it quickly descended into ridiculousness. Why would you make Hades behave like a hormonal teenager? Also, Hades presides over the underworld (or Hades), not Hell. There are no demons in the Underworld... Two completely different sets of mythology. Even if you wanted to combine mythologies and pantheon, it makes no sense to bring in Hell. Also, Hades claims to have existed since the dawn of time, but in this book his palace is Greek, all the gods are Greek. A very not-believable inconsistency. I mean, I guess you could justify it by freezing the gods at the birth of Western civilization, but they talk in absolutes, like I'm the god of the sea, so I would imagine that in this world there aren't multiple pantheon, which would make stopping at the Greeks a lot less justifiable. I mean, why not go with the Egyptians or the Chinese, which are older?
Let's just say this world-build has more holes than Swiss cheese.
I cannot make myself read any more of it, so I'm stopping now.

Snoozer

DNF at 61% and honestly I can't believe I got that far. Plot seemed like it was going to be really good up till Herby landed in hell and then it went...well to hell. It was sooooo boring, literal snoozefest. I thought Herby was going to be a lot more quirky but nah, he was just slightly off. Plus is was weird there wasn't really much of a description for him, I have no idea what he looks like except for having blue eyes. And Hades is red with horns....but what else? Hair? Bald? A tail? I need to know these things.
And wasn't there suppose to be something about a fake demon boyfriend and some Claude guy Herby was suppose to marry? I get it's a good way to have the MC's meet but don't have that be the main theme in the plot if it doesn't go any where. Same with Herby's Dad....oh a bad guy.. this might just get interesting....op, nope...he's gone...
And the evil book and the destruction of all the worlds.....what happened to all that 2 sentences worth of drama....maybe this comes up again later in the book.
Not sure I'd read this author again.

It was okay. A fast read and enjoyable overall. I will say this was insta-love/insta-lust basically, and while there was a good amount of conflict, I felt a little disappointed by how things played out. I guess maybe because I wasn’t really surprised by anything that happened. Maybe 2.5-3 stars?

Both Herby and Hades were okay. I liked getting to meet both Poseidon and Zeus, and would have liked more from those two. One big issue for me were things being left unresolved. Like Hades was going to build an art studio, Herby was going to paint, Herby wanted a job, Herby wanted to streamline the intake of souls, etc. We never saw anything about them again after they were mentioned briefly 1-2 times. I also wanted to see more of Herby and Hades connection and bond.

Way too light and not as amusing as I was led to believe. Worst of all, I felt the connection/attraction building between our leads but it was something slight until suddenly, almost entirely out of the blue to me, they were shagging like rabid weasels. Then it was "Forever Love"... No, just not for me.

An over the top romance with lots of fun. Herby plans to summon a demon in order to pose as his fake boyfriend to escape from his cruel father's clutches. And due to a technical error, Herby finds himslef in Hell, being super friendly with monsters and demons.

As bizzare as that sounds, thats the plot of this story. Its a fun ride with some monster killing in between

it was cute

Cute, light-hearted story. Very quick read but highly engaging nonetheless. I feel like it could have been fleshed out a bit more? That would have made it a more well-rounded read, it felt rather sparse in certain areas.

Ok read

Cute little read but there was a lot of repetitiveness and quite a few typos. I don't know if the author plans to write other books for this but it would make sense to at least do books for Zeus and Poseidon. I would read them.

Charming and Entertaining

Low Angst/fluffy
Insta-lust
Sweet heroes
Outside plot
Dual first person POV

I enjoyed this story very much! The title caught my eye and, fortunately, the plot was entertaining enough to keep me engaged throughout the entire book. I'll admit I was worried since the summoning is literally the first thing that happened.

Herby was so charming and sweet, a bit innocent at times but that was OK with me. He was kept on a tight leash by his nasty father so perhaps his silly little thoughts stem from the combination of loneliness and optimism that come from having no one but yourself and your imagination to rely on. He recognized when others considered him a halfwit because they'd give him "that look" which, of course, broke my heart a little. He refused to let the universe beat him down, though, even after landing himself in the Underworld.

Hades was amusing and possessive of Herby almost immediately. After being ruler of the Underworld for millennia, he wasn't used to being surprised or spoken to so plainly. Herby was sweet and not fearful of the demon at all, providing Hades with this little ray of sunshine he hadn't known he even wanted in his life. When was the last time Hades smiled? Hades didn't even make the conscious decision to keep Herby as his own before Hades was offering himself as the solution for Herby's problem. It was all very cute.

Hades and Herby come to a decision and have a rather heated moment by 30%ish in the ebook. Then the plot continues with Herby's evil father and Hades' introducing his mate to his brothers, Zeus and Poseidon. Some side characters were also introduced and remained throughout the story, giving Herby that found family vibe he definitely deserved. And let's not forget the pets Herby acquired! This book had a bit of everything. A huge plus for me? Never once did the affection between the two waiver. The story ended with everything concluded nicely and a HFN. I definitely recommend it.

Hmm, how to rate? It's a short, fluffy, inoffensive m/m romance to the halfway point, and its credo seems to be "the more tropes, the merrier." Innocent/naive twink isn't scared of the all-powerful, scary god; gods get lonely too; Fated Mates; newcomer shakes up the old, boring power structures; Unexplained Evil muahahah[tm]; scary animals are fluffy-boo pets... you get the idea. The smexxing part was a rushed to the point I felt it was borderline dub-con, but okay.

At the halfway point, the all-powerful god (Hades) is distracted and/or "has a plan [no details, please]" when the plot demands it, rather than just... you know, vaporizing the bad guy(s).

It's inoffensive because the author's voice is fine, it's a mostly fun story, but at The End, you just kind of shrug. Eh. Not bad. Could have been worse. But it could have been much better if it had been fleshed out more fully. Threads were just dropped (non-spoiler example: Herby's a painter, he loves to paint; Hades will build him a painting suite to woo him! But now the plot requires Herby to be bored, so we never get to see him paint...), little sparks of interesting bits would go nowhere, and the HEA at the end was a jarring drop-off. "We got this far... whelp, we're done!"

So If you like 'god-meets-mortal' MM fluff, this is a fine story.
