The infected want to kill him. Jason Harper needs to survive and find his wife. He doesn’t trust his companion.

Former Royal Air Force Regiment Gunner Jason Harper witnesses a foreign jet fly over his Aberdeenshire home. It is spilling a strange yellow smoke. Minutes later, his wife, Pippa, telephones him, shouting that she needs him. They then get cut off. He sets straight out, unprepared for the nightmare that unfolds during his journey. Everyone seems to want to kill him.

Along the way, he pairs up with fellow survivor Imogen. But she enjoys killing the living dead far too much. Will she kill Jason in her blood thirst? Or will she hinder his journey through this zombie filled dystopian landscape to find his pregnant wife?

The Fence is the first in this series of post-apocalyptic military survival thrillers from the torturous mind of British horror and science fiction novel writer C.G. Buswell.

Chris Buswell has a disturbed mind. Sometimes, well, most times, this overspills into his horror and suspenseful novels. They are not for the faint-hearted. If you like character-rich books with a twist, then check below for some suggestions.

The Fence is the first in a new series of post-apocalyptic military survival thrillers from his torturous mind.

Group has a tantalising, ‘Will they, or won’t they?’ storyline. Or buy One Last War at your peril! Surely, no one's neighbour could be that crazy!

C.G. Buswell is a former army Combat Medical Technician and Staff Nurse. During a posting to the Cambridge Military Hospital in Aldershot, he began hearing tales of the Grey Lady ghost. He worked on paediatric, intensive care, casualty, and medical wards there, but never saw her. He’d have broken the basic fitness tests running records if he had! He did, however, store this information away in his troubled mind, and wrote a series of books, in the Scarlet and Grey novels and short stories series, about military ghosts. The first of which was The Grey Lady Ghost of the Cambridge Military Hospital. If you love reading about the Napoleonic Wars, then you’ll love book two, The Drummer Boy, part set in Tidworth.

Chris has cared for many military heroes and the traumas he witnessed during his nursing and emergency care of them in life and death led him to develop military Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He writes about this too in his books. This form of mindfulness helps keep his demons at bay by inserting them into your Kindle!

Other postings in his career included the Field Surgical team in Belize, Akrotiri in Cyprus, and Haslar Hospital in Gosport.

Chris developed a love for writing during his 10-year service career and has had many articles published in journals like Professional Nurse, Nursing Standard, and the Nursing Times.

C.G. Buswell now writes full-time and lives in Boddam, Aberdeenshire with his Bravehound PTSD assistance dog Lyn, wife, fantails white doves, pigeons, and a tortoise.

Reviews for his book:

★★★★★One Last War is a great read, particularly for a veteran or forces family member. For those with an interest in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and the role of Assistance dogs, it should be required reading." Fiona MacDonald Founder and Director of military charity BRAVEHOUND.

What a wonderful book. I was gripped from beginning to end and must admit to a feeling of YES at the end. I loved all the characters but must admit to a soft spot for Carl, then Brodie & Lee. I really do recommend it and I am keeping it to read again at some point. Superbly written. Very well done Chris, and more please.

Great read and well recommended to any veteran or serving member.

I rushed back to read this book. Enjoyed every chapter.

Another fantastic book by Chris Buswell. An amazing and gripping read from start to finish. Couldn't put it down! Highly recommended.

Read it in a oner! Really enjoyed it and was rooting the whole way through for poor Millie. I was very satisfied with the ending!

Enjoyed this book

Enjoyed this book. Set in my home city and outskirts it was good to try and locate the streets and shops in my mind. Good characters and now patient awaiting the sequel.

To read a zombie apocalypse novel, you have to accept the cause given that sets it off and in this case it is a gas-weapon released by Russians on Aberdeenshire (and points for the location in Scotland). While we don't know if other western nations were targeted, we do know that south of Aberdeen was not impacted because the military had enough time to erect a big fence to keep people from the north out. It is not clear why such a small part of Britain was targeted like this and not a more populated area, why the enemy had help at Lossiemouth and why this was not immediately an act of war. Jason was a decent character, though Imogene was a better one, clearly a natural survivor. The reaction of the military commander was on the unbelievable side. Faced with an attack on his fellow citizens and a zombie horde in the areas near him, the commander chooses to indulge his long-held and festering grudge against Jason for hesitation in killing someone in Yemen during his time in the military. In spite of having enough military power to eradicate the infected from a distance, the commander decides to send Jason and Imogene back alone to kill the zombies. Just the two of them like Bonnie and Clyde and won't even let Jason see his pregnant wife. Just lame.

The Fence
Post-apocalyptic
C.G. Buswell
⭐️⭐️.5

The premise of this book was interesting but right from the start there's almost one info dump after another.

The pacing was slow but at the same time the plot and POVs went from person to person far too quickly, sometimes in the middle of dialogue and it just made the flow of the writing very disjointed and I couldn't connect to any of the characters properly.

Plot wise, not a whole lot happens. It's very focused on Jason finding his wife but it is a very slow process. It wasn't until around 35% that he even gets to the hospital where his wife works.

I must admit that, despite the fighting, I was bored. There were random points where a military helicopter would turn up, nearly shoot the characters but then leave again. At 90% it's revealed (in limited detail) who they are and what they wanted.

Jason and Imogen are then given their own mission to complete before they'll be allowed beyond the fence and only then will Jason be allowed to see his wife.

I think there needs to be more world building and more explanation as to why the zombies were created. I don't think I'll read any more books in this series.

Great story, well written. Brilliant characters

Really enjoyed this take on the zombie apocalypse, love that it is set in Scotland. My only criticism is the characters speech is a little stilted at first. It becomes more fluid towards the end, but it did slow the story down for me, as I had to make the speech so I d less formal as I was reading. I'll still get book 2 when it comes out though.

Very entertaining

This is the first book I have read by C.G Bissell and I really enjoyed reading The Fence. I love apocalyptic stories and found this one different. Imo, one of the main character's is so funny and amusing, she certainly kept me entertained. I am looking forward to reading the next book.

Loved this book, action right from the start, gripping story that makes you want to keep reading and just finish the next chapter, then the next…. Great character descriptions, a few laugh out load moments at Imogen’s character. As it is set near me I can imagine all the places and where they are traveling to. Nearly finished the second book then onto the third.

awesome shire zombies

Living in Aberdeenshire and knowing all of the places referenced, I was totally hooked by this one! I genuinely pictured the places littered by zombies in my minds eye, gruesome but just on the right side of too much. Good job!

I thought I'd try this book and boy am I glad that I did. I literally could not put this down. A fast paced thrill ride that would make a great TV series. If you like "The Last of us" this book is for you. Imo is great! When is book 2 coming out?
