Chaos and terror have returned to Bradwell. People are collapsing and dying everywhere in unimaginable circumstances and for no apparent reason. Angela and her young daughter, Stephanie, desperately try to escape the horror, not knowing if they will become victims as well. All they can do is try and get home to safety, but this isn’t as easy as they hoped. Claire has been suffering abuse at the hands of her boyfriend for too long. To the point she suffers a nervous breakdown, yet when she finally shows signs of recovering, for some reason everyone has disappeared. Even her boyfriend appears to be dead and she can’t remember a single thing. Not knowing what to do, she decides to try and find her mother. But she has been incarcerated in Northgate Hospital for the Criminally Insane and may not even be alive. It’s a chance she has to take, though. Joyce Fairweather and her new husband Michael are hiding in Northgate, not knowing what is going on and why the staff have all died but the inmates haven’t. Something is terrorising the villagers and it may not be of this world. Dare they risk going into Bradwell for supplies or remain where they are? Surely a prison for the most disturbed, vile prisoners in the country is not safer than whatever is hunting outside? Maybe there is only one way to find out… Book 3 in The Ghosts of Northgate trilogy.
Imagine a new epidemic where people are dying all around you. The only survivors seem to be violent and insane. Would you rather roam the streets hoping to find a safe place or hide in a hospital for the criminally insane? Justin Boote answers this in his third book of The Ghosts of Northgate trilogy. This story is gory, fast paced, and will get under your skin. Just remember, never eat the snow flakes as they are falling from the sky!
A Mad World is the 3rd in the The Ghosts of Northgate trilogy and man is it awesome. Justin knows how to tell a story and A Mad World proves that again. I have never read a series like this; all three stories are uniquely different and are great on their own. However, the author ties them together with the relation to the asylum; Northgate Hospital for the Criminally Insane. In A Mad World everything is being ripped apart, figuratively & literally. Is it the end of the world? It certainly appears that way to Angela & her daughter, Stephanie. People are suffering through painful, bloody deaths in every home, shop, or while driving or a on train. Even Northgate Hospital is affected, however the inmates seem to be fine. Maybe it's a virus, maybe it is God's wrath or maybe, just maybe it is not of this earth. Claire, who suffers from mental health issues, joins Angela, Stephanie and high level members of the Northgate staff in a horrifying fight for survival. This is the best book in a series of 3 fantastic tales. A Mad World gets a 4.8 rating from me and the trilogy a 4.6. Check out the entire series, you won't be disappointed. All the stories are fast-paced and you'll find blood, serial killers, blood, ghosts, blood, internal strife, blood, anthropomorphism and did I mention blood?
I was given an ARC of this book to read in exchange for an honest review.
A Mad World is the third book in the Ghosts of Northgate trilogy. The Northgate Hospital for the Criminally Insane, as well as several characters, tie the series together.
This book begins with a mysterious and deadly epidemic that suddenly (and very quickly) takes over the world. It begins with flu like symptoms and ends in a bloody explosion from the nose and eyes. The book follows several characters as they navigate through this deadly outbreak. They try to find out what is happening, why it's happening, why they have survived longer than those around them (and how to continue to stay alive). They are all different ages, from different backgrounds and very different morals and views. But surely they must have something in common... but what is the common factor?
Like the other 2 books in this trilogy, I enjoyed this story. To me, this one wasn't as creepy or quite as bloody as it's predecessors. It still had both of those things but, to me, it was more psychological. It has the reader trying to put everyone's stories together to figure out what is really happening and why. The entire concept really is unique and very engaging.
I gave this 4.5⭐️ rounded up to 5. Well worth the read!
Wow! What an opening!! That vision will stick with me and make me squirm for a while! 😲
This story was full of action, horror and intrigue from the very beginning and had me completely hooked until the very end!
People start to suffer from horrendous nosebleeds , with weird alien nose creatures crawling around in their hankie when they check it (why do we do that? 🤦♀️), weird snowflakes start falling, and is that......Aliens too?!?
When a grisly epidemic hits and everyone around you starts dying in the most bloody and gruesome ways, (so very bloody!) When you rely on medication to keep you sane, then you are unable to get said medication, and start to descend into madness! And when you decide that you'd rather take a chance with your own insanity than live in a world where the insane are the only survivors and the safest place to hide is the terrifying Northgate Hospital For The Criminally Insane - you realise it is indeed, A Mad World! 💀
I love this series, its a fast paced, high action, supernatural horror adventure, full of fear, blood, guts and great characters. The Northgate Hospital has become one of my fave places - and it haunts my dreams!
This is Justin's best yet! Absolutely brilliant stuff!!
Justin knows how to tell a story with unrelenting pacing, interesting characters and non-stop action. This novella is no different! A strange phenomenon is on the loose killing everyone BUT the criminally insane? And Northgate Hospital is the only place safe to hide? It is certainly a mad world!
The third installment in the Ghosts of Northgate trilogy starts off with s blast! Though the situation is different it reminds me of the beginning of Stephen King's Cell (which is a story I absolutely love!).
The apocalypse has hit the world, and we follow some few survivors trying to find out what the hell is going on.
As usual the pace is high and the story entertaining.
I won't give away spoilers, which in this case means, I won't mention some of the thoughts I've had during the reading, but I will mention this; I feel this (supposedly ;)) last in the trilogy is more a long appetizer for a bigger story. We don't get to know much about the apocalypse and how the world is going to develop from there, so it invites for something to dig deeper into. There's certainly enough flesh for Boote to investigate, if he decides to do so.
In general of the trilogy: I have enjoyed it very much (including the other Ghosts of Northgate, which is a introduction style of writing to the Northgate Universe and the surrounding community, not to be confused with the second installment in the trilogy, though they have the same title - it's obtained for free when signing up for Justin Bootes newsletter). In the series Justin experiments with many different subgenres of horror such as ghosts, cosmic, religious, possessions, nature gone crazy, mental illness, etc. Imo it works great in these stories, but I do think it might be a thing to consider to chose some of them to focus on if the universe of Northgate is going to be further developed (which I sincerely hope it does :D ) My favorites of the four stories are Carnivore and the introductiory Ghosts of Northgate. Especially the latter; there's so much I hmwant to know more about those charaters in that one!
**A big thanks to Justin Boote for receiving an ARC for an honest review**
Thankfully, no nightmares last night after finishing A Mad World by Justin Boote (unlike last time), but I did dream about aliens--which are also on my do NOT like list. lol If you're like me and have bloody noses regularly when the weather and atmosphere are just right you won't want to read this book. #dontlookinyourtissue #itsmoving lolol This book is filled with blood, so if you don't like stories that have that in it, stay away from this one. 😬 This page turner will keep you reading until the end. And darn it, we need to talk Mr Boote about that ending! 🤣 This completes the triology. IF you missed this, head to the first book Carnivore--so good--and then The Ghosts of Northgate--also so good, and gave me nightmares. Great Triology! ❤
I swear, the ending of these books make me so mad; this one more so since it's the last in the series.
This final book in The Ghosts of Northgate trilogy, really does leave the ending up to the reader in a lot of ways; though I think collectively the same conclusion will be drawn.
A Mad World is by far the bloodiest, goriest, "wtf" book I've read so far.
While I love this book, I think the first one will forever be my favorite in the series because that horse was a thing of the gods iykyk lol
I found one lowly error on page 131 (Kindle edition) "seem" should definitely be "see" in the sentence.
I give this book 5 of 5 Paws and am definitely going to check out the other series Mr. Boote has once I get through this dwindling tbr.
Much different than I expected, I thought it would be another trip through the evils of the Northgate asylum for the criminally insane and in some instances it was but this time the detective from the first 2 books is a inmate there. What happens when everyone around you starts having explosive nosebleeds that causes them to die and little or big bugs crawl out afterwards. Then aliens start showing up. Only Justin Boote,t the author can put these together into a book you don't want to put down.
