The Wartime Matchmakers

Rate this book
When the world went to war... they fought for love.

England, 1939:
The world is on the brink of war when Elizabeth Mowbray breaks her engagement with a tea planter in India and returns home to the English countryside. Desperate to escape a stifling life under her parents’ roof, she moves to London seeking adventure and excitement.

With German forces sweeping across Europe, she has little hope of finding steady, fulfilling employment as England readies itself for war. A chance encounter with Henrietta, Brigadier General Byron’s daughter, sets Elizabeth on a course that will forever change her life and the lives of others.

Henrietta, a recently divorced and statuesque beauty, is not a hopeless romantic like Elizabeth, but her new friend inspires her to embrace life, even as the dark fog of war creeps across the English Channel.

The two enterprising young women come up with a brilliant idea to open London’s first matchmaking agency. They face numerous challenges in establishing their business in the midst of air raid drills, food and clothing rationing, and the dangers of the Blitz. As they match Londoners, they find themselves in romances of their own. Elizabeth catches the eye of a daring, roguish RAF pilot and Henrietta discovers passion with a charming solicitor who joins Britain’s first Commandos.

While the men they love are fighting in the air and in Europe, German shells shatter the peace of England. Henrietta and Elizabeth become legendary as they rescue men from the shores of Dunkirk, dig for survivors in the ruins of bombed homes, and inspire thousands of their countrymen and women not to give up the fight for life and love.

Inspired by the stunning story of the real matchmakers Mary Oliver and Heather Jenner, The Wartime Matchmakers is a humorous, poignant, and personal reminder that even in the darkest times, love triumphs.

I’m not sure how to put in words how utterly brilliant this book is, suffice to say it is without doubt the best book I’ve read this year. The characters are wonderful, I adored both Elizabeth & Henrietta, I laughed with them, I sobbed buckets with them & I was on the edge of my seat fearing for them. The author has done an awesome job describing life in wartime Britain & took me on a plethora of emotions as the two young women lived through the evacuation of Dunkirk, the Blitz, The battle of Britain & the daily life in London. If I could give it ten stars I would
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

A beautiful and heartwarming story. Cast away any preconceived notions you have about WW2 stories, this is all about having hope in a time of darkness. Lizzie and Hetty are two strong characters that move not only mountains, but hearts for those that they love as well as serve. This about those left behind during the war, and allows us to see who was really affected during this time.

What a read this was. I know that the author was keen to say that if you don't enjoy novels set in the second world war, you should still give this one a go as it's something different. Perhaps that is true to some extent, I'm not sure. I do know that to me, the period seemed to be beautifully and clearly painted. This isn't a battle-heavy book but has much more about the home front and the things that the women left behind had to face. It's also a book about love and hope and looking to the future. But the second world war is definitely there as a backdrop.
Unlike many of her other books, I don't think that this is a romance really. There are romantic elements and as ever it's the human experience that draws us into that world. No, for me this is a historical novel. Perhaps the fact that it is based on a true story makes it even more about the history. I don't know. What I do know is that I really enjoyed every page and although it's not a short read, I was still really sad when it was over, because I just wasn't quite ready to leave these characters behind.
I highly recommend The Wartime Matchmakers. A fantastic read and one that's likely to stay with you long after you finish that last page.

Smith masterfully weaves truth with fiction to create one of the most compelling stories I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. This book touched me in a way I have not experienced before. I was utterly and completely engrossed in the story from start to finish. Having read all of Lauren Smith’s League of Rogues novels I will say this: this story can be read as a stand alone, it’s own unique story. But the connection it shares in ancestry with the League, adds a new level of appreciation. Every mention of characters that I deeply loved in the series, and hearing the singularly unique attributes that passed down through generations was like meeting with long-lost friends. Making my heart glad. The strength of each and every character in this story is a testament to the real life heroes that inspired these amazing characters. I truly feel that I could write a novel myself, explaining the ways this story touched me. It will stay, a permanent resident in my heart & soul. If I could say one last thing about this book, it’s this: have plenty of tissues on hand. It will shatter your heart in a million pieces over and over again, but rest assured, in the end it will beat louder and stronger than ever before.

There are no words strong enough to say what's good about this book. It is based on actual events in World War 2, two amazing women and how love really can conquer all. Not just romantic love, but love in all its forms. I did the "ugly cry" reading this story, and I've not done that reading a book, ever. Lauren Smith took real life, added her League of Rogues and wove an amazing story. I'm usually a historical Regency romance reader, but I wanted to read this because of the connection to her Leage of Rogues characters. I like to be swept away by the H/h and a great HEA and I was not disappointed. Now I have to go back and re-read the original stories.

I received an advance copy of this book and submitted my review voluntarily.

The Wartime Matchmakers was a captivating, inspirational and moving Historical fiction with a romantic twist and I was instantly transported to London during WW2, and had me mesmerized from beginning to end.

Based on real life, this is the wonderful inspiring story of two friends: Elizabeth Mowbray and Henrietta Byron who have an ambitious and rather innovative idea to set up London’s first matchmaking agency amidst air raids, food and clothing rations during what is notoriously known as The Blitz.
As the war rages around London, news spreads of the Marriage Bureau and Lizzie and Hetty become inspirations as they are not only matchmakers, but spy catchers and even rescue British soldiers at Dunkirk.

It’s obvious from the start, Lauren has done her research: we get detailed description of everything from clothing and fashion worn by both civilian and military, male and female, right through to the details of the rationing that was imposed on British citizens and the landmarks around London and Britain such as Liverpool Street, Waterloo Station, Bond Street, Cambridge, The Ritz and the shelters being built around London at the expense of gardens.

In amongst all the doom and gloom Lauren gives us this beautiful story of hope that’s so much more than matchmaking- the kindness and generosity and good will from strangers…love in many forms / this is a story about the good in humanity shining through before a backdrop of the most horrific and devastating examples of humanity.

This story will captivate you from beginning to end and instantly immerse yourself in the lives of these wonderful inspiring women who are so compassionate and driven by their belief in not only themselves but in their wonderful cause because of their determination to help others.

This is such an emotionally powerful story. You felt the resilience these women had to endure during 5 years of bombings from the Germans whilst their men were fighting against the war. I just have so much admiration for them, and my heart hurts for them to think of all that suffering, but then they had each other. They had such a strong friendship that they supported each other: such an inspiration.

This audiobook is performed by Billie Fulford-Brown who is a favourite and I absolutely adore her performances. She was perfectly cast: Billie has the depth of range that naturally leans to solo performances, and this was an 18 hour marathon and I was blown away!
Billie absolutely embodies both Elizabeth and Hetty’s personas, along with all the other characters: both male and female – and there were many: Eva and Marcus, all the men in Lizzie and Hetty’s lives: their parents, Lizzie’s Uncle George, Hetty’s husband Charles, Lizzie’s Philip, Nathan plus all the clients, there were easily 25 – male and female and she brought them all to life: I laughed and cried: she is brilliant!
I could listen to her all day everyday: her voice is so delicious it’s like your favourite dessert you can never get enough of!

This beautiful story by a brilliant author, performed by a wonderfully talented actor is not to be missed, and best enjoyed in audio. It’s packed with emotion, courage, resilience, and most of all hope: even in the depths of war: love conquers all!
All the stars!

WWII Hallmark at its best!

Let's be honest - we all like Hallmark movies and series'. Mainly due to the happily-ever-after elements and the cozy settings they provide. I never thought I would ever use the words Hallmark and WWII in the same sentence. How wonderful to be able to do that! And all thanks to Lauren Smith who decided to write this brilliant novel set during the Second World War. Whoever would have thought that WWII can be such a romantic setting and through all the doom and gloom we always read about those tragic years, it's refreshing to have a whole bunch of happily-ever-afters.

The best part of all? It's more fact than fiction.

"The two real matchmakers, Heather Jenner and Mary Oliver, become legendary for their actions during such a dark time. By bringing people together while the world tore itself apart, they were unsung heroes."

The story mainly takes place in London between 1939 - 1946 and during the prologue, one of our heroines who for the story purposes goes under the name of Elizabeth Mowbray, is caught in an air raid attack in London. Stuck in a bomb shelter with a couple of strangers, Elizabeth tries to chase the sound of the bombs away by telling her fellow occupants her story of hope, love and the start of the Marriage Bureau.

Staying as true to the facts as possible, we travel back to India with Elizabeth and learn more about how and why she returned to London, how she met Henrietta (Hetty) Byron, and living with her fashion designer aunt Isabelle. At a whopping 650 pages, some information provided in this novel, might seem tedious and totally unnecessary to a few readers, but this particular reader enjoyed every single detail that was well researched and presented by the author.

Told through the alternating perspectives of Lizzy and Hetty, it was fascinating to read how these two ladies started the historic Marriage Bureau and how they managed their enterprise during the war-torn years. Set with a background of real historical events, like Dunkirk and the London Blitz, this book provided hours of reading pleasure.

Although both ladies' dashing love interests in The Wartime Matchmakers were fictitious, I believe it was these two storylines that gave it the Hallmark stamp of approval from my side.

This was my first time reading anything by Lauren Smith and I loved this facts to fiction account of how ordinary citizens created hope and provided love during a time when it was needed most. She managed to blend facts, fiction, historical accuracies and verbatim famous speeches and quotes in such a way that the reader felt very much part of the story.

I do hope we will see more of her historical novels in future and if you really don't like WWII history, just read The Wartime Matchmakers for the romance. It's as good as any Hallmark movie!

I’ve read a couple of books by this author before.
Must admit wartime romances aren’t usually my thing, but I’m always up for a new read, and I’m glad I did…..

What an amazing story…..

It’s England, 1939, and we are on the brink of war.
Elizabeth Mowbray breaks off her engagement to a tea planter in India and returns home to England.
Wanting adventure and excitement Elizabeth travels to London, despite her parents arguments and fears.

A chance meeting with a young lady by the name of Henrietta, has the young women bound for adventures that will change their lives forever…..

They come up with an idea to open the first dating agency (but it’s more of a matchmaking service, dating certainly wasn’t as free as it is today 😉) they go through obstacle after obstacle, they have to prove their worth and their sincerity time and again…..
But matchmaking isn’t the only thing they do. They are heroes in my eyes…..
They battled in their own way through the war, they helped when they could, they did their bit for the war effort, and I loved reading every second of it.

This book was inspired by real matchmakers Mary Oliver and Heather Jenner.
So the attention to detail is amazing. I could feel the excitement and terror that these two young women faced on a daily basis.
Both Elizabeth and Henrietta are just wonderful characters. Strong and independent, very resourceful and witty. I laughed, I cried and I cheered as we witness them surviving the evacuation of Dunkirk. The nightly raids (blackouts) by the enemy aircraft. The Battle of Britain had me moved to tears with the vivid descriptions. And their daily lives and struggles which brought joy and sadness.

So do Elizabeth and Henrietta find love themselves? What I can tell you is that true love never runs smoothly. It has a habit of keeping you on your toes😉 but to find out if they do or if they stay single you’ll have to read the book.

I loved all the information at the end of the book, it just finished it off nicely.

The Wartime Matchmakers is not “the sort of business spinster great-aunts deal in.” Hetty is practical and logical, “hard on the outside, soft on the inside;” Lizzie is imaginative and romantic, “all smiles and sweetness on the outside–and unbreakable steel underneath.” They decide to partner in a business venture they call the Marriage Bureau, “a matchmaking agency for men and women who are in search of suitable marriage partners.”

“At the Marriage Bureau they weren’t simply arranging marriages. They were helping people make their lives the best they could be…It’s not about simply marrying them off. It’s about building a bridge that connects two people in harmony” and “unites people in love…They weren’t settling anyone down. They were matching soulmates, giving people a partner for whatever adventures life could offer them.”

“Sometimes life is a complex tapestry of events that illustrates your own destiny, one that isn’t always clear at the outset. Sometimes you need to give it time before the image reveals itself. A wedding is a beautiful outcome of your life.” In the midst of a world torn apart by war, Hetty and Lizzie are fighting for their country in their own way, fighting to give people hope by helping people find love…Making matches under the cloud of war might be the hope everyone needed to fight, to hang on–not only to survive but to live.”

If the women had learned anything, “it was that every second of life was precious, that the people [they] cared about were all that really mattered. Love was the only thing worth fighting for in this life. Love of family and friends, love for her neighbors and strangers, love in all its forms…

“No worlds were ever conquered by a woman who stared at her feet…The idea that living a wonderful life is the best revenge against those who’ve wronged you–comes from these women. Their strength, undaunted courage, compassion, and fierce love will exist long after their stars have returned to the night sky.”

Having read and enjoyed The League of Rogues, (set in the Regency era), I was intrigued to read The Wartime Matchmakers which was a thoroughly enjoyable read. The story has an unique feel to it. It is the story of two women who embark on a career setting up and managing a marriage bureau in London during WW2.
Although it is not a “League of Rogues”, (for those who have read them), the descendants of the original 5 rogues do make an appearance.

Ms Smith brings the characters to life; they are charming, irritating, funny and most of all loveable, but the women rise to any request/challenge given to them by their clients. I could relate to all of this, especially Mr “Calcutta” and his excessive demands. It is a story that will make you laugh and cry along with the characters.

Ms Smith has obviously done her research regarding this period of history. Descriptions of clothing worn by the characters, (men and women), civilian and military, are mentioned in great detail. There are also references to the rationing that Great Britain had during the war, and the amounts each household was allowed per week. There were also places in London mentioned. The Ritz, Bond Street, Liverpool Street and Waterloo train stations. Anderson shelters were mentioned being dug in the gardens, not just in London, but everywhere. Overall I felt as though I was a part of the story, as an observer.

Ms Smith, as always, gives us a wonderful adventure with her characters and I would give this a 5 star rating.

Story telling at its best!!!

This novel is based on a true story and historical facts that took place during WWII in England. I was never interested in stories set in the WW II era and was not sure I’d enjoy reading this book. I have a great appreciation for Lauren Smith’s writing so, when offered an advanced reader’s copy, I decided to check it out.

I’m so pleased that I didn’t miss reading this excellent novel!! The story of the “matchmakers” is touching and fascinating! The story surrounding Dunkirk is heroic! The love stories are tender, warm, and wonderful! Even the sad parts were so well written they add to the story!! The many characters are wonderfully written; they are smart, brave, compassionate, and passionate!
I cannot fully express how well written this immense story is! (650 pages)
There are interesting author’s research notes, at the end of the book, including information about the real “Matchmakers”.

I highly recommend this book to you!! Once I started reading, I could hardly put it down to eat or sleep! This may be Lauren's first story set in the WWII era, but I think The Wartime Matchmakers is one of her finest books!
You won't be disappointed!

I enjoyed this book, it’s well written and easy to read. I loved the two main characters and the premise of the story – matchmaking during the war years. The second world war was a major character in this story – in how it affected the characters and it’s over all presence in the story. Smith did such a good job that I felt like I was there in England during the war years, especially the blitz. I very much liked Lizzy and Hetty. These are two young women that are very relatable and likeable.

I felt like the last few chapters were rushed and wished that we had seen some things on page, instead of getting them as part of a later conversation. There were a lot of secondary characters and at times I was lost with who they were, especially when they appeared later in the story. Although I did love seeing how their matchmaking service was playing out – those stories were interesting in some cases.

I don’t read a lot of Fictional books set during the second world war, but this one, I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend reading it.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Historical fiction is one of my preferred genres to read and specially stories about WWII, because of this I have read a lot of books set on this period era, this one is completely different to to the ones I have read before and the fact that it is based on the story of two very courageous women makes it more interesting.

This is the story of two young women who decide to open a matchmaker service named The Marriage Bureau in London a little before WWII started and their stories and successes, along with accounts of the war and bombings of London by the Germans.

From the moment is started reading the first page until the moment I read the last one I was completely engrossed on the story and the protagonists lives, but also on the people they matched.

The writing was really good and the description of the people and the events so good that you feel you are with them in London and suffering with them during the bombings and the war in general.

This won’t be my last book by this author.

I really loved this one. On my favorite lists. I think this is one of Lauren's best work. The writing, the research, the story, it all flowed very nicely. It's based on true events and people in which makes me want to do some more research myself. There were a few scenes that were very emotional and even heartbreaking. I can't believe the real "The Marriage Bureau" lasted through the 70's. The title of the book fits and I love the cover.

Narrator by Billie Fulford-Brown did a fantastic job with the female and male cast with the different accents and genders. She really had an emotional punch for some of the scenes too.

I highly recommend this one.

Thoroughly enjoyable

Another page turner from Lauren Smith. Couldn't put it down. I usually don't care for in-depth historicals as the story seems to get lost in all those details but not this time. Lauren has found the perfect balance between historical accounts and fictional storytelling. I loved the characters. I especially enjoyed the way the story was told through each characters voice. It was also nice to revisit the families of the original Rogues. Nice tie-in. Very enjoyable ending.

I truly enjoyed this book. To say it was riveting doesn't give it enough praise and I'm not sure what words would. What these real women/people went through during this time is nothing short of miraculous while trying to help others find love during a time filled with such difficulties and horror. I really liked Lauren Smith's characters and the plot of this story. I am so looking forward to reading more from this talented storyteller.

Truly enjoyed the book and love that it was based on a true story of two women during WWII that wanted to make a difference through matching people together during such a terrible time in history. The only complaint I have with this novel is that I had a difficult time believing people would cross classes and marry commoners so easily. I might be wrong, but I thought the class system was still alive and well in 1940.

I absolutely loved this book. It is based on real life events of wartime Britain- though names have been changed and made more personal for the author.

The writing is very gripping and it describes things so clearly that you can see it all fold out. The characters are so full bodied and you really do feel for the characters (I had a few tearful moments in this book and I am not ashamed to say it).

I loved all the love stories in this book and really missed reading the book when I finished!! A book I would happily read again.

Great narrater whose British accent adds to the authenticity of the tale and is a pleasure to listen to. Based on a true story of a matchmaker business that was a precursor of the match businesses of today. From real London blitz stories to an imagined femske heroine of Dunkirk, a truly entertaining and engrossing story.

Well written, grand WWII story of love and sacrifice.

This was a good book that kept my interest throughout.

The first half was truly interesting to me. From the halfway point to about the 80% it felt a little repetitive.

I really liked the various love stories mixed with England and WW2. It was written well.
