Money. It’s the root of all evil and I need it bad.
You could call it the wrong place, wrong time.
To me the day I met Enzo was the day the old me died.
When he kidnaps me thinking I’m the daughter of his enemy the only thing I can do is pretend to be something I’m not.
But the more I pretend, the deeper I fall.
Enzo is dark, cruel, and menacing but he’s protective, fierce and determined.
Soon he wants to forge a contract between our families, making me his bride, but he has no idea I’m not who he thinks I am and when he finds out… well I know I’m as good as dead.

Style: Dark Mafia Romance Story: 3/5 Enjoyment: 3/5 Dark level: 2/5 Sexual Level: GOOD Triggers: Yes Violence: Yes Male: Sexy & Rude Series: N/A Pages: Loc. 3361 Audio: No Price: KU
STORY: What I Like: The concept of kidnapping the wrong woman, unbeknownst to Enzo and seeing her pretend to be someone else to stay alive was a bit exciting. Alicia’s personality fits her. Although she was not in the best position, I don’t think I would change anything about her. Enzo was arrogant, rude and stern. It brought out the chemistry between himself and Alicia to give that excitement to the reader when there is a submissive personality mixed with a dominant scary personality .
What Was So So: Although I found myself liking this story, it still felt ok for me. Because it’s a cliffhanger, I personally thought too much time was spent on the kidnap scene/scenery and that’s more of a me thing. I think this was one I would have love to read straight through without a cliffy.
SEXUAL CHEMISTRY: Not the most romantic, but I love the sexual build up between Alicia and Enzo. Of course Enzo came off a bit aggressive but you should be familiar with how these authors play to know what you are getting.
SECONDARY CHARACTERS: Secondary characters were ok. I was not wowed by anyone other than the main characters.
OVERALL: Was I entertained? Majority of the time Did I like the story? Yes If a series, would I read/continue with the other books in the series,? Not sure about this particular story as it’s a cliffhanger.
TRIGGERS: Violence and treatment of Alicia.
NOTES: No ow/om cheating and has cliffhanger ending.
****I don’t equate these stories to real life. It’s about personal taste and what you would or want to tolerate with the books you read. I know we all have different opinions and preferences with what we read. I based my book reviews on my preferences and what I like, and while these preferences may not be the same for others, I hope this review was still helpful.
Alicia, so down on her luck, that she takes on a job from her friend for a cool $20K in payoff if she succeeds. Of course, everything does not go according to plan, in this presumably illicit deal. In a case of mistaken identity, Enzo (with the friend (quasi brother) Prince) kidnapps Alicia "Elena," found at the scene as leverage in his mafia family's deal with Cartel.
The premise of this story -- mistaken identity, arranged marriage, sweet daughter of the enemy, especially with Enzo being the brother of Cristiano in the other Dark Lies duet -- was very promising. Enzo was the sottocapo, darkly alpha to Elena's innate submissive attraction to him. They were very obviously made for each other, and their twisted attraction rang tangible.
However, what did not work for me in this book was the story progression. It felt unwarrantedly slow and immaterially descriptive. I kept wanting to arrive to the next milestone that would grab my attention, but when it arrived, it was not without impertinent detail. Stronger spice would have at least offset the lull, even with the intended sexual tension and build up.
Pretty good start and great characters. I've read more captivating books by these authors.
Ok read with tstl H! Heroine is likeable and although suffers from 'body betraying syndrome' its thankfully not too much in your face! H goes from believing the worse of h without checking the facts of course to being smitten by her. Boring middle bit with cliffhanger ending which again cements the fact that H is tstl !
For me this is a case of missed opportunities. A mistaken identity? A forced mafia marriage? A good book could have emerged from these premises. Unfortunately, the plot is paper thin and full of annoying holes (e.g. why would Enzo and Prince assume so staunchly that the girl in the warehouse is necessarily Alvarez's daughter? Don't let me get started on how Alicia was able, without the technical knowledge, to extract a bullet from Prince and stitch him up, while 'big, bad' Enzo was helplessly sissying around!).
There was absolutely no romance. Smut, quite good yes (but even that with too few scenes) - but no romance. The writing was bizzarely disjointed, as if I am playing a game of 'fill in the blanks of what happened between paragraphs' all the time. The character convos were mind bogglingly pointless, making little sense - just time wasters to stretch the book. The character developments were ludicruous and skin deep. Enzo spent a good deal of time being a nonsensical a$$hole, cold, cruel, unfeeling and psychotic, to suddenly being full of self-doubts and caring for 'Elena's' feelings. With absolutely no buildup on why he would change. I liked Alicia a bit better, but for the life of me, her reasons for perpetuating the mistaken identity were vague and feeble. Her character was slightly less schizophrenic than Enzo, but still she was supposedly hellbent on finding a way to escape, only to suddenly going meekly into the wedding. Laughably, she actually forgot about her biggest predicament to angst redundantly about the wedding and tying herself to a life she does not want! - when she got to meet Elena's father, she forgot to feel any fear on being unmasked by the man! So many unnatural reactions that left a bad taste after reading. And let's not even talk about the very weak secondary characters - just every bit as schizophrenic than the leads.
*sigh* I have debated whether to get into Book 2 of this duet. It is only because of the cliffhanger and some mystery on who is really Elena that I am willing to see this charade until the end. 0.5 star above 1, only because there are yet worse stories out ther.
Morality of the day: a solid plot is everything, and I am flabbergasted about the easiness with which books can get written with a flimsy story and so many nonsensical word fillers to get the required number of pages.
Gut punched! That’s how I feel after the incredibly brutal cliffhanger J.L. Beck and S. Rena left me with. This whole time, I thought I was reading a standalone and wondering why the duo was leaving all the resolution to the very end, and silly me, I came to my senses around almost at 90% of the book. Though I usually don’t prefer slow burns, Cruel Beast was good. It was all angst and suspense and fill of guessing game. Now, I feel like I am in a tight space hyperventilating, and wishing for a speedy second installment release so I can breathe once again. I think I might be getting to old for the cliffhangers.
Alicia (FMC) gets dragged into a drug war brewing when shes mistakenly kidnapped assuming that she's a mob bosses daughter - Elena. That starts a chain of twistedly good plot twists and turns that lead to one hell of a cliffhanger ending.
I'll be honest I couldn't stand Enzo's Grandfather. He sly and manipulative. Enzo on the other hand had like a split personality where he couldn't make his mind up about anything. He was conflicted about what he'd done and had to do especially with Alicia/Elena. That is until near enough the end if the book. I actually enjoyed reading this book and I'm dying to get my hands on the next one to see how this plays out
INTENSE Cliffhanger A dark drama filled story that sucks you into one heck of a head turning twisted deceit filled read that kept me on edge frazzled and stunned. A great read that gives you all the feels with plenty of drama and an intense cliffy that has me twisted with need for More Enzo. Gimme Savage Vow ASAP.
Solid forced marriage/mafia story. I have mixed feelings towards Enzo and Alicia. Enzo’s range of emotions gave me whiplash, and Alicia has multiple chances to come clean but doesn’t. I get she’s scared but damn, even though Enzo is a bastard, he deserves to know who she really is. Enzo’s grandfather and Alicia’s “father” have absolutely zero redeeming qualities, and I didn’t really like either one of them. There are some loose ends with the college friend Elena that I hope are cleared up in the next book. After all that drama in the end, I will preorder Savage Vow because I need to know what happens next!.
I received a free copy of this book via Bleeding Heart Press and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Dnf at 24%. This may be a case of 'its not the book, it's me'. Because there's objectively nothing wrong with it. I just don't care about the characters or what's happening to them, so I've been skipping through it. I'm not going to waste my very limited reading time on something I'm not loving.
Thank you to Candi Kane Pr for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
This is the worst book I've ever read. The Hero is so asshole that I want to kill him by myself. How can he do that to her like that? He was literally manhandling her and harassing her. He was not stopping even when she was refusing. I'm so fucking angry with him right now.
Like him his grandfather his asshole. This book ends with a cliffhanger and I so not want her to end up with him!! She deserves better!!
I felt so sad for her. Idk why she was even falling for him even after he behaved so badly with her.
DNF Threats of rape, rape, abduction, and violence...What a romantic man ! Who said chivalry is dead?!
Let's not forget the golden moment where the abducted heroine, after suffering from violence, threats of rape, and SA, makes "warm milk" in the kitchen because bouhuhu "she can't sleep".
What the fuck is this book? And why is it rated so high? This story is going nowhere fast.
Enzo is definitely a morally grey character with conflicting characteristics and makes you love-hate him simultaneously. He showed a caring, soft side but also a dark, sadistic side when it came to Alicia. While he didn’t force her into non-consensual situations, he still manhandled, threatened, and possibly manipulated her. From his POV we see that he doesn’t want to force her into situations and somewhat sees she’s a victim in these circumstances, but he is unfailing loyal to his grandfather so carries out those wishes. Alicia herself is someone thrown into harrowing circumstances when all she was hoping for was a bit of money to cover her college tuition. She did put herself into a dangerous situation, yet her desperation for a better future overruled any self preservation. Yet she is also a rather strong character, who tries her best to escape when possible and to try to understand her captor to seek opportunities to escape/survive. Still, she begins to feel for him especially when he shows some kindness and shares with her things about himself. One thing I was wondering throughout though was why Enzo didn’t think to ask Alicia her last name to verify she was the Elena he suspected she was. There could be a number of girls with the first name Elena. While Alicia could have corrected him, she was confused and scared at the beginning, and I do agree he might think she was lying if she denied it after she realized what was happening. He did make a lot of assumptions. Overall though, this was a tense and suspenseful read. I really hope in the next book that Enzo doesn’t hurt Alicia but realizes his mistakes and tries to protect her as she is only a casualty caught in this war.
One thing to note is that while there are two book before this one, I don’t think it’s mandatory to read those before this. There are references in the beginning so it might be a little confusing, but not enough to not be able to understand what’s happening here, as Alicia and Enzo’s story can stand alone.
Smoking hot beast!!! I don’t know what it says about me (and the rest of you readers) but I can’t help falling in love with a villain (like a seriously buffed tatted villain). Cruel Beast is a duet by J.L. Beck and S. Rena and it is amazing. Enzo is a psycho and is determined to not let his grandfather down. This is not a story for those with a weak constitution. Enzo’s change in attitude gave me whiplash but considering his lifestyle it is understandable. Alicia is a true fighter and her relentlessness is awesome. I love everything I read by J.L. Beck and S. Rena. The two authors collaborating makes sense and leads to the most soul gripping, heart wrenching tales. I could NOT put this book down and read it in one sitting (and it is not a short book). Having a male character that has no emotions to suddenly being flooded by them is probably a hard thing to write about but Beck and Rena did it seamlessly. This is a book that will stay with you and you will want to suggest to your friends. I can not wait for Savage Vow!! 5-stars for an incredible book by Beck and Rena.
He thinks he’s doing what’s best for his family. She thinks she is getting money for tuition. How will it end when the wrong girl is taken and only has a false name to try and save her life? He will be the Cruel Beast he is to break her, but what if she breaks him first?
She was desperate and naive he was cruel and unmovable..
I have mixed feelings about this book. I wanted to love it but I despised everything about Enzo. And don't get me started on his grandfather he had absolutely no redeeming qualities. Enzo and Prince were sent to Miami to make a deal for their grandfather Renato De Luca, the Capo of the biggest Cocaine distributor in Italy with another family only he doesn't show up instead they find a woman in the warehouse. Alicia is struggling to come up with the money for tuition again and her friend Elena tells her a way she can make easy money by picking up and delivering a package for her uncle and if anyone asks who you are just tell them your Elena. While she knew it was a dumb thing to do she agrees because she can't pass up the twenty thousand dollar paycheck. Only things don't work out when she's intercepted by two men who think she's the elusive daughter of the mobster who stood them up. Now she's being held prisoner as leverage thinking she's someone else no matter what she tells them.
You can't help but root for her after everything that happening around her. I can't help but think the worse is yet to come especially with the shocking cliffhanger.
I received a free ARC from the authors through Bookfunnel an I'm voluntarily leaving my review. 3.75 to 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Cruel Beast is the third book in the Dark Lies series. This dark and intense book is the story of Alicia and Enzo. The story is a tight bundle of raw nerves with a number of twists, darkness, desire, deception, suspense, a lot of angst and one heck of a mistaken identity with a forced marriage. Yep this is a book that you will either really like/love or hate I think. Well there there things that I really did love about the story-line I did not really like the characters a lot of the time. There is a second book to this couple so I am going to keep reading and am just hoping that I will come around to liking Enzo, as right now I could throttle him without a second thought.
I received a copy of this book and am leaving my honest review. My opinions are all my own.
This is the 3rd book in this intriguing series. Alicia is struggling to come up with the money for her tuition, and when Elena offers her a way to make easy money by picking up and delivering packages, she knows there is a risk, but the money is worth taking a chance for. Enzo and Price find Alicia at a warehouse, and they kidnap her mistaking her for the elusive daughter of a mobster. This is a well written story which is dark, raw, gritty, intriguing, and intense, with family, emotions, loyalty, suspense, angst, danger, and twists, which leads to an entertaining and heartwrenching page turner. I look forward to reading more from these talented author’s whose work I highly recommend.
This is a dark drama-filled story that starts off slow but picks up. Enzo kidnaps a girl who he thinks is the daughter of a mob boss but she lies thinking it is her only way to stay alive. This one is full of twists and turns. I am trying to figure this one out but it keeps me guessing. Now that cliffhanger has me wondering what the heck is going on. I can't wait to read what happens next. I need to figure this one out. It is a great read that has me with the need for More Enzo and Alicia. I need Savage Vow, the next book in this series.
Never Pretend it rarely ends well. Alicia a struggling student finds herself taking a risk by accepting an offer for a quick way to make enough money for tuition. Pick up a package. Deliver a package. What could possibly go wrong, if asked just use my name says Elena. Well everything goes wrong. Now that Alicia has used Elena's name it all goes terribly wrong. Enzo the grandson of the De Luca family finds himself in a situation that he unknowingly put himself in when he and Prince kidnapped "Elena " A very dark cruel story that will leave you hanging.
Alicia can’t pay her tuition to avoid being on a wait list until she can pay, she makes a decision. Her friend Elena tells her about a way to make some money. Never mind Elena happens to be the daughter of crime boss. Enzo is the grandson of another crime family. When he goes to Miami, he stumbles upon Alicia who pretends to be Elena putting herself in the clutches of the dark twisted crime prince. It appears everyone’s plan take an unexpected turn.
I received this copy and my spoiler free review is voluntary
I love a good kidnapping storyline involving morally gray characters and this Mafia family is really getting to me...in a good way. Enzo and Alicia's story was straight fire and I was flipping those pages as fast as I could to see what would happen next. This is such a weel written, emotional, and dark story that will have you gripping your kindle and freaking out. Im going to need Savage Vows ASAP, please and thank you. I received an advanced readers copy from the authors and am leaving this review voluntarily as all opinions are my own.
A case of mistaken identity leads Alicia into Enzos paths he takes her believing shebis another and has plans already set up for her. But will the truth ever come out or will it be to late? Engaging dark read with steamy scenes dark themes and more.
I received a free copy of this book via Bleeding Heart Press and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Alicia is trapped in a lie, she was just trying to save herself at the time. Would Enzo believe her anyway, if she tells him the truth or will the truth get her killed? I enjoyed Enzo and Alicia's story (although I am left waiting for the next book), Enzo has definitely done some shady things in his time (but I still enjoyed him), I wasn't so taken with his Grandfather. Bring on the next book. I am voluntarily reviewing a copy I received, and giving my thoughts and opinions on it.
Enzo is broody, masculine and so cruel. Alicia gets mixed up with the wrong crowd and finds herself at thecmercy of Enzo. This story is a mix of mistaken identity, arraigned marriage, and so much angst. There is so much mixed chemistry between Emzo and Alicia and I found myself both rooting for them to give in and for her to run away and save herself. There is a fantastic plot twist that sets us up for book 2.
Listened to audiobook. The female narrator was good, but the male narrator made this a chore to get through. The fake Italian accent didn’t work especially when he was narrating the dialogue of other characters. The overall story was entertaining, but I will continue the story on Kindle rather than audiobook.
This book is part of a duet therefore ends in a cliffhanger. That being said there is lots of surprises in Cruel Beast. Enzo is exactly what the title says, Cruel Beast! He's the kind of character you love to hate and hate to love. Alicia is the definition of innocence and has no idea what she's getting herself in to when her friend offers her a way of making fast money that Alicia desperately needs. Thinking she's was someone else Enzo makes a huge mistake. If you can stand Enzo and his grandfather this book will carry you on quite a ride. I can't wait for book 2!
I give this book 3.5 stars but lean more towards 4 stars. I have been looking forward to Enzo's book and I was not disappointed! I cant wait for the second book and to see how Enzo and Alicia will get over the betrayal🤔😲
This book is definitely dark, twisted, full of action, suspense and so much angst. This couple is pure fire together but they have so many obstacles against them. Enzo will drive you crazy in more ways than one. Poor sweet Alicia has gotten in way over her head and makes some very poor decisions. This story is one wild ride and after that shocking ending, I need the next book now.
Alicia needs money and fast. Her friend gets her a job, but while trying to do it she gets kidnapped. Enzo thinks she's someone that she's not and she plays along. They end up in a marriage that neither one wants. This book ends in a cliffhanger and I need more!!
WOW! Enzo and Alicia’s story was thrilling, entertaining and deliciously sexy. These two had me on the edge of my seat the whole way through and then when we get to that cliffhanger of an ending, I am left waiting to see how their story is going to end.
Dark, twisted and filled with drama, a definite must read for dark romance lovers.
