What if those moments we put down to coincidence are really the calling cards of God? What if those pinpricks of light in the darkest places are beacons to guide us, telling of the agonizing love in God's heart? What if God is calling to us, 'I miss you, please come home' ?
Lighting the Beacons seeks to expand our everyday horizons by daring us to believe that the realities of heaven can break through right here, right now.
Inspired by her own recurring vision of pinpricks of light being fanned into flame, Bishop Jill writes for a wide audience to kindle faith in our hearts, to light beacons. Highlighting stories from contemporary culture, Scripture and the writings of the saints, Lighting The Beacons seeks to encourage those who are curious about the Christian faith, those who feel discouraged and those aspiring to be giants of faith and part of a transformed society.
An excellent gift for those who yearn to be transformed by God. With study guides at the end of each chapter, it is also ideal book for group discussion.
It’s got some aspects that aren’t my normal fare but this is an encouraging, exciting, honest and clear call to be on fire for God. A good read, with discussion questions for groups - could be fun to spark conversation.
Jill is the Bishop of Lancaster. She's profoundly influenced by the image of lit beacons signalling hope, and lighting the way home. Her stories of what God is doing in her parish and community speak of life and new beginnings. Her references to our national spiritual legacy through various saints I knew very little about, will strike a chord across the years. We are part of a bigger story.
I hear Jill speak on a podcast [Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3se4OZT Spotify: https://bit.ly/40jcgQ3] and was sufficiently inspired to put the book on my Christmas list. I'm glad I did. It's been a great way to end one year and begin another.
Great book for someone new to faith or rekindling faith. As someone who found faith as an adult, this book was really helpful for me to view my life/the world around me through a Godly lens. The book helped me to understand elements of Christianity, which can be confusing and provides good practical advice about being spiritual and hearing God's voice. The language was also accessible and anecdotes helped to bring a point home.
Brilliantly encouraging, faith-building, somehow both down-to-earth and up-to-heaven in its style and impact. Really appreciated the stories. Loved how she very naturally modelled dependence on the Holy Spirit, groundedness in the bible, and inspiration in the lives of saints.
Love this book. Spiritual and practical. I'd hoped to read it quickly but there was so much in it to reflect on and think about doing, it took me ages. Definitely one to keep on the shelf and come back to frequently.
