Two years it took me to read this anthology!! It's a textbook, really. And, no, I did not read and/or answer the questions at the end of each poet's section. I just read the poems. Besides enjoying the poems themselves, it was fun to see which poets I'd read before and which I hadn't. The introductions to the poets and to the sections (The Beginnings of American Poetry, Modern American Poetry and Recent American Poetry) were informative. The book was published in 1992, so it's not that recent, but it was sufficient to my goal of getting an overview of the poetic world in America. It did a great job of reminding me that Marge Piercy, Mary Oliver and Billy Collins aren't the only American poets whose work I love.
