THE ELEPHANT MAN by Arthur Taylor Genre: Biography and drama
This story is about Joseph Merrick "The elephant man" based in real Life. He was a deformed man, who had a huge head and was full of lumps on his body. Due to difficulties in his childhood and after being kicked out of his house, Merrick joined a circus in which the shows were based on showing people with deformities or different from others. Until one day, a man known as "Dr Treves" discovered Merrick and, captivated by his strangeness, decided to take him to the London hospital to study him. From that moment on, the elephant man's life would change forever.
In my opinion, I recommend this book because it reflects how people can discriminate wildly and excessively against those who look different or suffer from some type of illness. This book opens our minds a little more and makes us realize how someone can suffer over something that is not their fault and helps us empathize more with that, about how we should help the most vulnerable and be kind.
