Spectral Voices

Rate this book
As fate forces her to face some startling mystic abilities, Janine grapples with how she fits into the greater scheme of things, all while facing unresolved feelings for the man she scorned.

From across the void, whispers tease the paranormal investigators of Spectral Analysis, could one of them actually be speaking to spirits? As the ghost hunters seek paranormal activity in the windy city, they stumble upon an ancient curse linked to a charm necklace, a coven of witches, and to Janine Stinger. As Doctor McNally shares his scientific theory on paranormal energy, Janine becomes emotionally entangled all over again; with the doctor, the paranormal, and her violent past. Will she take a leap of faith and embrace a witch’s pagan philosophy? Doing so might just excise her of past ghosts, and that could manifest in her happily ever after, or…it could result in her own demise.

First off, don't make the mistake I did. Embarrassingly I even read the dedication to this book:

"To the middle child who glues everything together, just like book two of a trilogy."

I even looked to see if I was missing something and possibly my brain just didn't want to register because this book had all my favorites within. So! This IS book number two in the trilogy.

Go read Spectral Analysis first before this one. I will be reading it! But I still wished to put up a review for this book. I may edit it later after reading book one.

Going in this is the FIRST book I've read so I may not get all the little easter eggs if I had started with book one. Alright, enough about my embarrassing reader's moment.

Friday the 13th on a full moon night! Middle of the night near Thatcher Glen Pond. We dive right in as a group of college kids are treaking their way to the pond in the forest. Randy's simply interested in a girl and she's finally given him the green flag.

Only Melissa has brought her roomie Trish with her. Both are wanting to see the ghost that wears the groups university colors. Randy of course goes along with everything to get closer to Melissa.

Only none of them expected anything to come of the night. Just wanting to see the ghost, nothing more. Randy certainly didn't expect the night to play out the way it did!

That's just the prologue!

We bounce from Chicago, Illinois to Texas as the crew for Spectral Analysis gathers for a "team bonding" dinner. Season three is about to kick off and everyone is getting to meet some new faces. The biggest and most "important" one being Max Colliers. The new executive producer.

Only when the team goes to the Alamo after setting everything up they realize their new producer isn't the best. While Ian is focused on the science behind everything, Kiki on the spiritual/supernatural. Max only sees dollar signs.

Which the group catches on quickly to his endeavours. Right down to the "sexy" costumes. None of them approving of such things. Least of all Janine who's been trying nothing more than to get out of her contract.

Having the pains and heartbreak of seeing Ian all over again. Along with memories resurfacing from her past she wants nothing more than to leave. To focus on her life and move on. Leaving the show, Ian, and her past behind.

Ian still clearly has feelings for Janine but doesn't know how to go about things or if Janine is even still interested in him. Avoiding dinners and his gaze doesn't help his case.

Kiki's thrown in the middle of it all. But what really gets her interest is the possibility of Janine being something more. Having seen how an actual ghost listened to Janine and answered sparked something. Kiki coming to terms that she has grown but not every growth is her own.

What really sets everything off and in motion is when Janine decides it is time to face her past. Going back to Chicago. Since the series has gotten approval for filming in Chicago.

None of the main cast are fully prepared for what lies. Facing past and present but luckily Janine doesn't have to do it alone! Being thrown back into her traumatic past and in search of justice and closure. She's not the only one wanting closure., someone else is as well. Calling to Janine and Kiki. Will Janine listen though?

There are some very dark elements in this read. Strangulation and an extremely abusive past. One character even being lucky to be alive after a brutal attack. There's also emotions from loss of a child to an accident.

Carlos, one of my favorite characters from the book, does help to lighten the mood. Kiki helping to soften things and be a support. Though she does get chewed out a little by one of her coven sisters.

There's some comedy but a lot of darkness. I was wondering how the prologue tied to the rest of the book for a while but when it does! It is amazing! This is a spooky story with actual ghosts. History lessons within and science. Don't forget to add in witchcraft and spiritualism!

Enjoy the read and give the author some stars!

Almost Received 5-Stars

"Spectral Voices" nearly got a 5-Star rating from me. This book is very good - almost as good as the first part of the trilogy. But, there are quite a few typos in it. And, although the plot does eventually come together, it takes a while. For a large part of this book, I wondered where the author was going with it.

Still, if you have read "Spectral Analysis", I suggest also reading "Spectral Voices".

Thrilling

This was a really cool spooky story that kept me on the edge of my seat. I though the writing was very good. It was totally different to others I have read. Follow how a TV team face challenges along the way. Very e joyable.

Great telling of a Spooky Spiritual Tale.

I started this book as an author’s group assignment. Each month we’re offered a new list of books to try and share our thoughts. I loved this story, despite being part two in a series. I quickly caught up with everyone’s history, and was pulled into the spiritual world of ghost hunting and spiritual unrest.

I was swept into their world and became part of their investigations, watching as they discovered pieces of a puzzle that would control Kiki and Janine far into the future. I enjoyed the character interplay of old team and new members that kept me guessing about their futures.
