Burning Kingdom #2

The Dragon King's Hate

Rate this book
Betraying Kadoc changed everything.

Now he's lost to his bloodlust, more beast than man, and the bond building between us has basically been reset.

My effect on him has dwindled to nearly nothing, but I'm the only one who can calm him, so I've got to figure out something.

When the massive bone dragon from the prison island recomposes sooner than expected and escapes, it's clear that I have to get Kadoc's bloodlust under control for the both of us…

Because if I don't, our entire world might burn.

Came into book 2 with optimism. That slowly began to dwindle. The storyline became a bit predictable. And there were certain circumstances that didn’t quite fit for me.

I don’t see me picking up book 3

Happy reading,

I'd probably enjoy the writing more if "sky-damned" and every variation of the term wouldn't be used like 2 times on every page. at this point I'm so annoyed I'm extra aware of it 😭

Poor Kadoc

Poor guy. He basically has a hard on the entire book with no relief. I searched the word "erection" and it's at least once per chapter. It's there when she eats, he bites, she's tired, he's tired, they're fighting, she's almost dead, he almost kills her. I swear the only two emotions he has this entire book are mad or erection.
She broke the bond and apparently the only way to get it back is a lot of sex. I was disappointed with this fact. Not because the sex was bad, but because there was an opportunity for them to bond non physically. She really needed to build back up her trust in his eyes, but instead she just threw herself at him until he screwed her and that fixed everything.
*Spoiler*
.
.
.
And then she just leaves. Doesn't try to talk to her sisters at the castle, doesn't fight, doesn't try anything. She just leaves. Uses her magic against her mate and leaves. That should have broken the bond again. I was shocked it didn't and I was so disappointed in her.

Extremely repetitive, a solid amount of cringe, boring love interest, no plot, bad descriptors, questionable world building.

They're easy reads and meh.

Seren and Kadoc . . .

When Seren betrayed Kadoc, their bond broke and bloodlust had taken control. Seren is strong, however, and works hard with Kadoc to repair their broken bond and rekindle their relationship despite the problems they had to face as they worked through their issues.

Seeing Kadoc and Seren's relationship recover, open up to trust, and show real growth throughout the story line was exciting. Was their bond becoming even stronger than before? Would they get everything under control in time to restore order?

I'd love to fly!

The second book was really interesting to read with the changes that happened with seren and Kadoc was amazing and how their relationship has grown, but has gone through so many ups and downs as they continue to fight monsters and get comfortable with their relationship saran develop so many different skills and her body changes, but she finds out that her sister vampires are acting strange around her and eventually it breaks your heart to find out the reason why

“The Dragon King’s Hate” is book two in Lola Glass’ Burning Kingdom Series. Told in MFC pov with epilogue being MMC. Picks up right where book one ends and ends on another cliffhanger, I found this cliffhanger not to be as frustrating as book 1. Don’t go thinking that the ending is all rainbows and unicorns, oh no it’ll have you pulling out your hair lol.

Seren has betrayed Kadoc and now the bloodlust has taken over and his dragon is not happy about what Seren has done. Nadoc is claiming to be the new Dragon King, the prison is in shambles, Monsters have escaped, Dragons have gone to retrieve the vampires, Seren and Kadoc are locked up and suffering from the bond between them being broken.

Wow I’m exhausted just writing that and I know what has happened, I can only imagine the excitement and curiosity you might be experiencing reading this. If there is anything you are going to take from this review, it’s to go into this book with an open mind, don’t let the previous book influence you. Don’t think about what Kadoc was like or how Seren broke what was forming between the two of them. Have faith in the author, Ms Glass does not disappoint, trust the flow. So get comfy and enjoy the emotional roller coaster that you are about to embark on.

This book was so much more enjoyable than b1. I found both Kadoc and Seren’s characters to be more relatable and believable. Though there is still a lot for them to work out they really started to communicate and trust each other. They listened and respected each other besides a few incidents. A few scenes really stood out to me that really helped me to understand and like both K & S.

Also holy moly Gold Wings, say what now how do I get me a pair, besides the obvious, like getting me a Dragon Mate lol. I am also hoping and cheering for things between a certain Green Dragon and Gold Dragon to work out. (IYKYK 😉)

Looking forward to book three!

I was excited to go into this book considering how book one left off...

...however, it never really reached it's potential in my opinion. I was very invested in them rebuilding their bond. I wanted to see their relationship repair itself and bloom, but it just kind of stagnated until BOOM! I really disliked how it was emphasized that their bond wasn't progressing, and then in a split second they completed all the mating steps at once. The "revelation" she has that causes the bond to progress should've kickstarted the next phase of the bond instead of completing all phases simultaneously. It really irritated me. There was so much potential to drive up the tension and spice until they inevitably completed their bond. I also didn't like that they completed their bond and pledged their lives to each other without loving each other...what? They want to be together forever, but haven't said I love you at all? Makes no sense.

The plot kind of just rambled on and on with no direction. At the end the author admits she tried to plan out the plot and then just threw it out the window and did whatever she wanted. It shows.

And lastly, if your first book is going to end on a cliffhanger, then your second should absolutely not do the same. Only one cliffhanger allowed in a series (and that's sometimes too many cliffhangers). You aren't enticing readers to continue the series because you left them hanging. You just end up frustrating the reader.

I did love this middle book, which is very strange for me. Middle books tend to annoy me, because I am so excited to make it to the end.

I was a little annoyed at the whole Kadoc being an ass thing. It was hard to get behind after they had spent so much time getting to a point where Seren and Kadoc felt on even ground. To be fair Seren made a mistake, and that happens in relationships.

So, I shrugged it off and pushed myself through this novel, and Lola Glass did not disappoint. The two seal there bond earlier in the book and put an end to the whole weirdness. Seren gets dragon wings, and starts to accept that she could make a family with these people.
Though her sisters were acting like weirdos from the beginning, I didn't see there betrayal coming. It was a way for us to understand the main character in a deeper way. Seren's pain felt like my pain when she discovered her sisters had left, and even worse when he closet sister shows up on the back of a bone dragon they had spent weeks looking for.

In the end the vampire queen leaves Kadoc behind to go with her sister Haiz. A dumb move, but one I could understand because of how much she already cared for him. Leaving him behind wasn't a slight at him, Seren genuinely believed that her sisters would tell her what was going on. Explain things.

Worth the ride!

This is book two in the series. After finishing book one I moved on to this book immediately. I was so obsessed with reading this series. Siren (FMC) feeds from Kradoc (MMC) and it helps control his bloodlust and her hunger or bloodlust as well. Kradoc bites her as well ;) . Their bond is forming quickly and it's so sweet and then when Siren feels like there is no more time to save her sisters she betrays Kradoc by telling the kingdom that they could control their bloodlust if they have a vampire mate and she tells them to go get all the vampires and bring them to the castle. This betrayal causes the bond to break and Kradoc is consumed with bloodlust. They are able to rebuild their bond and actually complete the mate bond which they had not done before the betrayal. After they completed their bond her sisters betray her and leave from the castle and no one knows how or knows any way to find them. The book ends on a cliffhanger. One of the sisters returns and demands for Siren to go with her and Siren wants answers so she goes against Kradoc's wishes. She uses her magic on him so he can't stop her. This book ends with Siren instantly regretting leaving with her sister and confining Kradoc with her magic.

This book was better then the second but it still had some hangups for me. After Seren broke the bond, she was starting to get on my nerves with her lack of empathy with Kadoc feelings. She never really apologized for what she did. As the book progress, the relationship started to grow and when she actually starting to feel bad for the things she did I started to enjoy it more. I could not understand why Seren did not talk with her sisters. She spent this whole time wanting to save them and once they arrived she only had a hug with them and then was shocked with what they did when she had no interested in talking to them about them acting weird. Again Seren was getting on my nerves. I am enjoying the few side characters that make this more interesting. This book was kind of predictable but still a decent read. I plan to read the third book just to see how this ends. I am hoping for a good ending.

It's rare to like a second book much more than the first but this time i got to admit it, that's how I feel . I enjoyed the first installment a lot (don't get me wrong, Lola Glass fantasy never disappoints) but I really felt like whereas a lot of the first one was on world building, this book went much more into the relationship between Kadeon and Seren. While I absolutely adored Seren, I wasn't obsessed with Kadeon like I normally am with Lola Glass' male protagonists, but this book definitely changed that. I really feel like we got to get to know Kadeon and see a beautiful relationship develop. My fave part is always a mix up between fantasy aspects and the romance and while the first certainly delivered on the former, we got a lot of the latter in this one! 100 percent worth the wait and I'm so so excited for the third book!

This is the second book in the Burning Kingdom series and this book really brings the tension. The first book ended on a pretty significant cliffhanger and I’m glad these books have a quick turnaround so I didn’t have to wait too long!

Book 2 picks up right where book 1 left off so definitely don’t skip the first one. After Seren’s betrayal Kadoc has been overcome by bloodlust and the world is in a shambles. A lot happens in this book and there is so much tension within these pages. It is possibly one of Glass’ most brutal books to date when it comes to tension. It is a real rollercoaster!

There is some excellent character development throughout this book and really fleshes the characters out.

To top it all off this one ends in another cliffhanger but in my opinion it was a kinder cliff hanger than the first. Can't wait for the next one!

Score: 4/5

Synopsis:

Seren betrayed Kadoc trust resulting on the mate bond to break. Seren will have to figure out how to get the mate bond back along with Kadocs trust.

Characters:

To be honest, Seren character felt a bit off to me in this book. Her having problems communicating her emotions and feelings seems out of character with me, seeing how easy it was for her on the first book.

Kadoc is still as good as he was on the first book. I definitely did enjoy reading about his bloodlust’s and how they were trying to handle it.

Overall Thoughts:

Miscommunication is one of the tropes I dislike the most in books, however for some reason the author made it so I didn’t mind as much.

I enjoyed reading the fights and getting to know more about the side characters in the story and I’m definitely intrigued of how they will follow up on the next book.

The best part of this book is the ending

I really struggled to finish this book. It's very blah and book 1 was the same. The endings are so good because not only do they capture your emotions but the cliffhangers are absolutely glorious. The best comparison for me would be watching Married At First Sight. Some seasons are so good you watch every episode in the edge of your seat. Whereas other seasons are so dull you skip to the end just to see who stayed married and who got divorced. This series reminds me of the dull seasons. I didn't skip to the end but it was really hard to push through. I will most likely read the 3rd installment but it's literally only to find out what's going on with the sisters. That mystery will be solved in the first couple of chapters followed by chapters of Kadoc compromising and Seren doing what she wants to do.

Tying Up Ends From Book 1

This book didn't have too much action. It seemed more to be answering possible questions from the first book. Most of the problems from the first book concerning our main characters were fixed as well, and things seem to be moving smoothly. That is until Haiz, Seren's sister, starts acting more and more suspicious, and the other ones are MIA. Throughout all of this we learn more of the mate bond as well as more about the vampires. This all leads up to a predictable yet still shocking ending with Haiz coming back with a missing creature and requesting Seren come with her.
Despite Hadoc's objections, Seren goes because of her need to know more about her sister's betrayal. Of course, this leaves a pissed off Alpha male. I am interested to see how thi is play out in the next book!

I mostly liked the book. But for the love of the skies, (Pun intended) I wish the author would find something besides skies-damn 467 times in this book. (Not a factual number, just a guess) it was used like 8 times in two paragraphs. EXCESSIVE!

I also want to point out that in book one it is mentioned how much the vampire sisters love each other. They hug and pile up together to sleep. But in book two? Apparently they never hug. That’s not a thing anymore. 🤔

She was close to at least two sisters, as pointed out in book one. But in book two, she’s not? I’m assuming all of this is because the author is creating bad guys by trying to change little things. It honestly would make a lot more sense to edit book one and just add a sister that she didn’t get along with perfectly to make that sister the bad guy in book 2. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣

Again with the ridiculous things that the main character doesn’t know or understand, but understands and knows other things… it’s really taking away from the book. It makes me fix on that silly thing, and I sit there confused and trying to understand why the heck that would make sense, instead of continuing on in the book.

Oh and we also have this weird tidbit… from the beginning, we know both dragons and vampires only sleep like 4 hours a night/day. But the main character sleeps ALOT more than that. Unless she’s exhausted from fighting. Then she is about to keel over, but has plenty of energy to have a bunch of sex for hours. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣

Here is another great book by Lola Glass, whoever this woman is, she knows how to write a good book. I am the type of reader who gets series fatigue easily, when authors create drama I just feel like who cares. BUT Lola, man, she keeps me hooked, there are really only a few writers who do that for me.

The main character stays strong in her position and does not bend to the will of her dragon, I liked that. I also really liked the way the main female character thought through things, it was very interesting. The start of this book was stellar and did not disappoint.

Read it.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

------------
In this second book we can see how Seren's decision affected when the link between them was broken, it was a book full of ups and downs, trying to do what was best not only for them but for dragons and vampires at the same time, full of action and above all something mysterious that is happening. It was a good continuation.

The slow burn continued to burn through this book!

We came back to the cliffhanger immediately and things resolved to a point, but the repercussions extended far into the story. I liked that it took time for things to get figured out between our MCs after the unsettling culminating events of the first book.

The relationship and characters continued to grow at a very realistic pace, there were set backs and epiphanies as they learned about each other. I appreciated how much a few words and honest communication progressed things between them.

We were left with another wonderful cliffhanger with a one time POV change to our MMC.

I’ll be diving straight into the last book of the trilogy!

CANT WAIT FOR BOOK 3

I love Seren and her personality is remarkable and unquie, Kadok is just how I would imagine a dragon shifter to be❤! Lola Glass delivers an amazing world with unique and beautiful creatures. I can't wait for book 3 Seren has alot of heartache coming her way and I think she is about to learn two very hard lessons, her power is only getting stronger and she has been betrayed, and what happens when u hurt your dragon king mate by leaving him worried for your life!!!

lots happening here

I liked this second book. There is a lot going on in the plot and one twist I wasn’t exactly expecting. I will say it didn’t feel exactly original. There were a couple scenes that reminded me of my favorite book from another author and a good bit of Kadoc and Seren relationship reminds me of my favorite duology from this author. It’s not necessarily a bad thing but it’s something I definitely noticed. I am looking forward to seeing where the conclusion goes.

Siren & Dragon

This book was an enjoyable super fast read. The story picks up directly after book 1 with Seren and Kadoc in the dungeon after Naon freed monsters from the prison and took over the throne. They have to get through a number of struggles to find their happy place. I loved the character and relationship growth, as well as meeting new dragons and vampires , with some spice sprinkled on top. Seren and Kadoc make a great match. I can’t wait to read the third book to see what happens with Seren and her sisters and her bond with Kadoc.

Ridiculous

I agree with every other review that is not much better than mine that this book was repetitive and it dragged on. There were constant issues that were just completely unnecessary and were portrayed as urgent only for the characters to dilly dally in taking care of them. It what got me the most was how the FML was surprised when her sisters left! Not only did she barely speak to them this entire book, after spending the entire first book being worried about them, but she also ignored red flags left and right and still didn’t talk to them!!!
