Why did I lie? I hadn’t planned on lying. When that stranger handed me the journal and looked at me with his big, desperate eyes, I wasn’t planning anything. I intended to give it to whoever asked for it. This wasn’t some elaborate plan or a scheme. I just didn’t open my mouth. It was like my mind decided without me that I should hang on to it. --------------------------
All Maggie wanted to do was photograph an old bridge and avoid thinking about the recent death of her mother. What she wasn’t planning to find by the Mississippi riverside was a dying man, left for dead, shoving a mysterious journal at her with blood-covered hands. What she really wasn’t planning to do was stash the journal and lie to the police about it, nevermind read it.
Page after page, Maggie is drawn into the complicated life of Cassie, a single mother from a complicated past, who’s now intertwined with a prominent crime family in Minneapolis. What begins as a distant threat on paper — a distraction — becomes horrifyingly real when Maggie discovers that someone is following her.
In a race against a dangerous family whose powerful grip reaches across the city, Maggie and an unexpected companion search for answers about the dying man and Cassie’s involvement. The question is, where is she?
I’d like to thank Marlene Ridgway for sending me an arc copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is a story about Maggie coming across a man who has been badly injured and left for dead, who passes her a journal. She keeps this journal a secret from the police and once she is home she delves into it. This journal contains Cassies world up until recently. She can’t help but wonder who Cassie is and as she reads more and more she realises Cassie is in danger. Maggie finds herself in a race against time to find and save Cassie.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was from Maggies point of view only, which I think worked really well. I loved seeing Maggie and Sam’s characters develop and interact with each other. It is the type of book that’s hard to put down as the reader is always left wanting to find out more. You are constantly trying to solve the mystery. If you are looking for a suspense-thriller which is fast paced, I would highly recommend this.
I am looking forward to reading more from this author in the future. Congratulations Marlene Ridgway on your debut novel.
Please write more !!! The characters are super well developed and this is definitely a book that readers won’t want to put down. You might be up all night trying to finish it! Lots of twists and turns but easy to follow because of the quality of the writing and the pace of the story. Loved it! Keep writing, I will be recommending this book to my friends and family :)
Where is She? grabbed and held my attention from the very first page! Maggie simply wanted to take some pictures of a bridge and finds herself wrapped up in so much more. Finding a bleeding and dying man near the river who hands her a journal, kicks off this incredible story that will grip you all the way to the last pages.
I was incredibly impressed with the character development and how it didn’t take away from the story line. I really felt like I knew each character and could relate to each of them and their role as this novel played out. The story line flowed so well and there were no gaps that left you wondering.
You can really tell how thoroughly that the author enjoyed writing this novel for our enjoyment!
There are books that I can’t put down, and like Maggie, who can’t put down the journal that was handed to her near the river, this was definitely one of them for me. I read this on the heels of the best books I have read in the last six months, The Silent Patient, and was worried that it might somehow make this book less enjoyable, I was wrong! When I want to gread a suspense novel, this is exactly what I want to read!
"Where is she" is a fast-paced suspense thriller novel. It's an intriguing storyline, covered with a huge series of mystery and twists.
Margaret Hayes a.k.a Maggie is a photographer. But she is having troubles connecting with her passion after the death of her mother. One day, she decides to walk down the path to a river behind a local bar named Dello's.
Thinking of taking some pictures, she never anticipated to find a severely injured man with a journal clutched in his blood-sodden hands. As he gives this journal to Maggie, her world was about to go haywire because this holds the account of a single mother, Cassie in conjunction with well known crime family in Minneapolis.
As stakes get high, the dangers and threats begin to take control of her life. With the risks of getting involved to a point of no return, will Maggie and her companion be able to find the truth?
This is a sort of book that will put you on the edge of the seat while your anticipation grows with each passing moment. The significant exploration of themes of suspense, curiosity and answers along the characters development were done in such an extraordinary manner that didn't overpower the narration. The author's writing style is engaging and despite this being her debut work i think she has already created her spot amongst my favourite authors lists.
A perfect book for those spooky fall month. You will not regret picking this up for your next read.
Where is She? is set in Minneapolis, where Maggie has found a nearly dead man under a dark bridge and is given a journal. Overwhelmed by the confusion and chaos of the situation, she keeps it and lies to the police, beginning to read the journal of a woman, heavily involved with a local, prominent gang family.
I really enjoyed the characters of this book - they were all well-written and fleshed out. Maggie, the MC, could be a bit bull-headed at times, being excessively stubborn or maybe dumb, but her character arc was really well done and I’d say her behavior got better. I loved Sam’s character and the way his personality added to the story - Maggie’s specifically. The female friendship in this book was really well done and I appreciated that aspect. The antagonists were really interesting to me and I enjoyed that mystery.
The pacing of the book was somewhat slow for the first half and then right at about 50% it just took off - I couldn’t keep up. Overall I really liked it as the beginning gave enough to keep you straight before it launched itself.
Last, I really enjoyed the mystery itself and the specifics around the title - “where is she?”. There were enough possibilities presented that I genuinely couldn’t figure out what had happened, and I thought the mystery was handled in a way that I couldn’t have guessed, while not being a surprise looking back. I like mysteries that I can’t solve (because those don’t feel clever enough) but I also like when it’s possible to get there on your own, rather than a blindside.
ARC was provided by author, Marlene Ridgway in exchange for an honest review.
When Maggie, an uninspired photographer looking to spark her creativity, stumbles across an injured man in the woods, it sets off a chain reaction where the protagonist is pulled into the lives of strangers who she becomes completely engrossed in. Through a journal handed to her from the injured man, Maggie discovers the life of Cassie, a mother who has gotten involved in trouble that is well over her head. As Maggie continues to read, nervous because she’s concealing the journal from the police and possibly hindering their investigation of what happened in the woods, she becomes entrenched in Cassie’s story. As she does, she realizes she may be putting herself in danger, as well as those she loves.
Ridgeway writes with precision and paints her words in vivid strokes. There is tension throughout the novel that keeps you wanting to turn the pages. There are multiple questions throughout...Where is she? But also, who is she? Who is Cassie, this woman who has come alive from the pages of her diary? And who is Maggie? Will she find out where Cassie is, and will she find out more about herself in the process?
Disclaimer: I received an advance reader copy of this book from the author. The review is based solely on my own opinion.
This novel is a mystery so well-written that it belongs in a tier with Ruth Ware! The writing is so beautifully crafted that I was able to get fully lost in the story. Do yourself a favor and pick up this must-read! 🤩
I want to start this review by thanking Marlene Ridgway for sending me this book to review.
Where is she?
Maggie goes behind Dello's bar to take some pictures of a bridge but what she doesn't expect is to find a man extremely injured this man gives her a journal this will change her life and those around her. Once she gets home, she starts to read the journal and finds out the journal belongs to someone named Cassie, this will make her want to know more about Cassie. Where is Cassie and who is the man, she found? Is Cassie in danger? Is she alive?
This book is a page turner you not going to want to put it down as the pages go you want to find out so badly what happened to her and if she is alive, and who is the man Maggie found? Thew suspense to find out will keep you reading and unable to stop.
An easy read and beautiful writing.
I recommend this book 100%, if you are looking for some suspense this is for you and an amazing book to start reading suspense.
Congratulations Marlene on your debut novel, can't wait to read more from you.
This is my first Mystery book that i’ve read and it had me wanting to read more after every page! such a good book! I want to type out so much more but don’t want to spoil anything! all I have to say is that it’s a must read! def kept me wanting to know more after every chapter! could not put this book down! I tried reading it every chance that I got!
From reading just the first few lines you are thrown headfirst into the deep end of this book, Marlene Ridgway did not hold back when she wrote this and the further into the book you get, the stronger the hold the story has on you. You seriously can’t put it down.
Within the first few pages, we meet Maggie, a young woman who has a serious case of wrong place, wrong time as she innocently goes to take a photo of a bridge, she stumbles upon a seriously injured man, she waits with him until the paramedics arrive, but while Maggie waits with this mysterious stranger, he manages to stay conscious long enough to hold out a diary and gasp out one word “Look”. Unbeknown to Maggie this diary will turn her life completely upside down.
As Maggie flicks through the pages of this diary she is quickly drawn into the life of a young woman called Cassie, Maggie tries not to read the diary, but once she starts she can’t stop herself and she has to keep reading it, suddenly as life takes an unexpected turn Maggie's once normal life and the lives of those around her is now a matter of life or death. The mysterious stranger and Maggie are thrown together once again in their search for Cassie and as their worlds collide and the diary as their only source of information, they only have one question on their minds: "Where is she?”
I found myself quickly becoming attached to the mysterious stranger & Maggie and when things get dicey, I found my heartbeat would quicken and I would grip the book harder, Marlene’s writing actually made me feel anxious on behalf of the characters. I honestly couldn’t put this book down, I’d say to myself that I would only read one more chapter only to find myself still reading at gone 1 AM.
I didn’t want this book to end and with each turn of the page I found myself almost not wanting to finish it because 1) the book would be over which made me sad as it's such an incredible book and 2) I didn’t know what was going to become of the characters I had become very fond of, Marlene’s writing is so incredible that you honestly couldn’t say how it was going to end, you simply have to keep reading.
I would highly recommend Where is She? to everyone, buckle up because it's an on-the-edge of your seat, roller coaster ride full of adrenaline that fills you with so many different emotions all at once. Marlene has done an incredible job writing this book, it's honestly one of the best books I have read in a long time.
“Where is She?” is a heart-pounding, page-turning debut novel from Marlene Ridgway. I went into this book without knowing anything about the plot, but from the first sentence, I was hooked. I always love a suspense story with an unreliable narrator, because you never quite know what will happen. In this book, we definitely have that with Maggie, whose life seems to be unraveling since her mother died and she moved back to the city. Although she works at a restaurant, she is an aspiring photographer. She hasn’t had much motivation for the art lately, but one night she decides to take some pictures of a bridge down by the river behind a bar she recently visited. While walking down the trail, she stumbles upon a man on the ground. He’s clearly been attacked and is bleeding profusely. While she’s waiting for an ambulance to arrive, the unknown man hands her a journal and tells her to look at it. What follows is a thrilling story of how Maggie gets sucked into the lives of the author of the journal, Cassie, and her boyfriend Liam, who for all intents and purposes is an Irish-American mobster. As Maggie reads about Cassie in her journal, she begins to wonder what has happened to the young woman and her son, and where her violent boyfriend is now. Maggie soon realizes she’s being followed, and it seems her own life is at stake. When the John Doe she discovered bleeding on the trail wakes up from his coma and comes back into her life, Maggie is taken on a dangerous adventure she never wanted or expected. Along the way, she finds out what she’s truly made of and who the people are who are most important in her life. If you’re looking for a suspenseful crime and family drama that will keep you guessing and turning the pages to find out what happens at the end, I definitely recommend “Where is She?”!
Margaret Hayes is a dejected photographer who now works at a restaurant. When she gets inspired to get behind the camera again, she does all that she can to grab the opportunity. Under the bridge where she plans to rekindle her passion, Maggie finds a bleeding stranger by the river. While she attempts to keep him alive, he hands her a journal before professional help arrives. The journal is filled with eyebrow-raising entries that soon spill into Maggie's life.
This book tells the story of uncovering the secrets and clues that lie in this diary to reveal what Maggie has gotten herself into. Ridgway not only writes Maggie's story but that of the writer of the journal entries. Although these stories have some similarities, they are such brilliant contrasts to one another that their concurrent telling only adds to the suspense of the novel.
Each character is so well-developed that they can be easily identified when they come onto the scene. This allows reader participation, which is critical with this type of novel. Ridgway did a great job of creating an atmosphere that gives enough information to raise more questions. This keeps the intrigue piqued. Even with the intrigue alive and the writing as good as it is, the momentum sometimes faltered as certain moments were unnecessarily dragged out. Although there were those small hiccups, the pace was constantly revived before any interest can be lost.
This is a novel best suited for young adult readers who enjoy thrillers and suspense novels. The characters in the book bring so many new dimensions to the events that take place that they add to the thrill chased by those who enjoy being kept at the edge of their seat, wondering what comes next. It is a definite must-read!
I was amazed when I read this book! The main character, Maggie, had the opportunity to read a “book” that was Cassie's journal and she then became a part of the “story”. She has the opportunity to take on several roles during the book. At one point you could’ve said she seems like a detective, a victim, a witness and many other roles! There was no lack of detail as you got sucked into each page! The amount of descriptive words that are used are wisely placed in a strategic manner that creates the entire scene in the reader's head like you are watching a movie or observing the entire story in 3rd person. I am just waiting with little patience for this author's next book to come out because I am so excited to be in that realm that made me feel like I was inside the story book, AGAIN! I would definitely re-and-reread this entire book! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! I just bought a few extra copies of this book to gift to some friends, motivated by how much I truly enjoyed every part of this book. It is so well written that each scene replays in my head when I put the book down. I can’t even drink my coffee anymore without thinking about the way the author describes the warmth of the coffee in Maggie's palm! I became emotionally invested in this book as I got to know the characters! By the end of the book I am just wondering… Do Maggie and Sam have an attraction that will turn into something? Or what will happen next!? I have never wanted a SECOND book so much in my life!!!! Definitely, do not hesitate to buy one OR MORE copies of this book. It is beyond an incredible read that will have you living a whole-nother life as you enjoy the story. If I haven’t convinced you enough that it is SUCH AN AMAZING READ.. then just buy it and find out for yourself! ….. WOW! -Hayley B.

I wanted to read this book because the cover and title intrigued me. I went in blind, I just figured it was about a missing girl as many physiological thrillers.
I went in blind and I was not disappointed this book was nothing like I expected it was way better. The concept was unique and very interesting. I have never read anythingl like this before. It was an action packed ride, it played like a movie in my head.
Maggie is a little lost and stuck in her life, but she's a likeable character. She finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time, and a series of events happen that shakes her life up.
John Doe I loved his character and kind of wish they hooked up. But I'm a hopeless romantic.
The journal I loved this whole concept but I wish the journal gave more information. It was kind of cryptic to me and I didn't connect to that character as much it didn't feel like a journal. But that didn't take away from the story because I wanted to see how things played out for Maggie even though I didn't care as much about the other girl. The ending gets wrapped up pretty good. But is also left open ended which I love because in my head they end up together.
Where Is She? by Marlene Ridgway is a tightly woven thriller that masterfully combines suspense, emotional depth, and intricate plotting. Ridgway crafts a story that keeps readers on edge, delivering a tense narrative that balances fast-paced action with carefully developed character dynamics.
The novel’s strength lies in its character development and emotional resonance. The protagonist’s search is both physically and psychologically compelling, and the stakes are heightened by the realistic portrayal of fear, determination, and vulnerability. Ridgway skillfully navigates moral tension and uncertainty, creating a story that is as intellectually engaging as it is thrilling.
Thematically, Where Is She? explores themes of resilience, justice, and the lengths people will go to protect or recover those they love. Its combination of suspenseful pacing, layered characters, and immersive narrative makes it highly appealing to readers of contemporary thrillers. Overall, Ridgway delivers a gripping, emotionally engaging story that leaves a lasting impact.
Ridgway is a master of suspense. Where Is She? is an edge-of-your-seat thriller. My heart beat out of my chest throughout the whole book. Each time I tried to put it down, Ridgway threw another curve ball and I had to keep reading. Each character is wonderfully flawed and incredibly realistic. The way the book is crafted means that you discover the truth alongside the main character, you feel like you're right there with her. This book will stay with me. Well done!
I’d like to congratulate Marlene on writing this amazing book. This is full of suspense and it had my attention from the very first page. The characters are portrayed with so fine detail you’d feel you know them. I actually felt the stress Maggie must have gone through. On the other there’s a totally different world of Cassie. Eventually these two worlds merge as Maggie got herself involved in Cassie’s life or mess. It’s good that she has Maya with her. While everyone is worried for different reasons and looking for Cass for different reasons. You’d wonder where she actually is? Read this amazing book and find out.
