Four and a half stars. After her grandmother’s death Piper Thorne receives a letter left to her from her grandmother. It makes Piper all the more determined to recover the precious indigenous artefact that was stolen from the home before her grandmother died. Since she was the last person believed to have seen and handled it, Piper was accused of the theft. But it seems her grandmother had her own suspicions. Piper, who is used to a nomadic lifestyle, is determined to reclaim the treasure and right the wrong. But then she encounters private investigator Ben Powell. Who employed him to hinder her quest and why? Can she convince him to believe her version of the story? And how will that change things if he does? Piper is a strong, resourceful, hard working artist who places a high emphasis on her ancestors and indigenous heritage. I loved getting to know her and her beliefs. Ben is an interesting character. Both he and Piper have been hurt in the past by the attitudes and actions of others.I loved the Victorian setting and scenes of The Grampians and enjoyed the interplay between characters. From the great scenic cover this romantic suspense novel is a great read. This is book two in the Wimmera series. But it reads fine as a stand alone. Maybe a couple of things a bit too neat towards the end or maybe it was just me expecting another twist? However, a minor quibble in what is another great well paced Aussie read.
