15 creepy stories, I think not. I would say I enjoyed only about 5 of them. Many were too short to even get an understanding of what they were about.

Not for me.

I have decided that Chad Miller is becoming one of those authors that I will always grab his latest book. I enjoy his writing quite a bit. While he can be straight to the point and direct, he is also great at spending time with the details of an important scene. He can set the tone and the scene with ease. I imagine, given time, his writing will only improve. He definitely has the skills as a great story teller.

His collection of 15 short stories, The Void, is a great introduction to his writing. Miller puts a lot of heart into his stories and it shows with these fifteen tales. There is a story of revenge, regret, the supernatural, sadness, love, and an odd and weird story (called Tall Tale). My favorite story of them all is The Beast Awakens.

A brilliant collection of shorts from a creative, and at times a little twisted, new talent. The Void will force you to question human nature and your own sanity as you read through these 15 tales. Suicide, drug addiction, prostitution, incarceration, and even a few humorous tales mixed in between will slowly warp your mind. Enjoy!

Couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting!

I received a free copy from the author. Here's my voluntary review.

The theme of imprisonment, oppression, and abuse by Nazis, unrelenting dreary employment, inside one’s own body, and abusive parents releases an onslaught of emotions and feelings in these powerful short stories.

Chad Miller’s stories are imaginative, well constructed, and keep the reader on the hook without knowing what to expect next, which is why I kept reading.

Highly recommended.

Welcome to utter darkness! Short tales of woe well-crafted and terrifying is the currency here.

From a nine-year-old girl who finds herself in the most horrific situation at such a tender age, to a man who awaited retirement and finally got it - and much more than he expected, this book is not for those who expect goblins and monsters. What lurks is the true horror inherent when lives take an unexpected turn.
This book was riveting, suspenseful and masterfully well-written. I can't wait to read Prisoner of Fear, his latest opus!

The Void is a collection of fifteen creepy short stories by Chad Miller. I received a copy from the author for my honest review.

It’s often difficult to judge a collection as a whole because each story will be different, appealing to a different readership, so I will first describe each story separately.

This book contains the following short stories/ flash fiction pieces:

Descent: a dark and very bleak tale about the long-term effect of abuse and its consequences.

The Helpless: A man trapped in a coma hears everything his greedy relatives think about him.

Always There: A harrowing ghost story involving the horrors of the Holocaust.

Nightmare at the Pharmacy: A short and darkly funny story featuring a lot of toilet-based humour.

DNR: An Artificial Intelligence contemplates a future without its creator.

Survivor: A divorced man’s life hangs in the balance – literally.

The Proletariat: A man’s arrested for something, but he doesn’t know what.

A Sick Sense of Humor (Living the American Dream): A wage-slave looks forward to retirement after years and years of tedious work.

Lady Davignon: A flash piece inspired by Lady D’arbanville by Cat Stevens/ Yusaf Islam.

The Beast Awakens: A young girl lives in an abusive home with her beastly mother.

Tall Tale: A True Story: Another toilet-based humour story about a man with a strange bowel problem.

Sanctuary: A vignette about love.

Guilty Pleasure: A man must clean his knife because it has become horribly stained ...

The Nick: A little historical tale – a guillotine pleasure.

To Death with Irony: A flash story about death and the afterlife.

There's a lot of variety in this collection. The ones I liked best are where the author uses his personal knowledge to good effect. Chad Miller is a trained pharmacist – so the medical details in Nightmare at the Pharmacy ring true. It was darkly funny in places, too.

I also enjoyed Guilty Pleasure for its twist ending.

Always There, a harrowing tale of the evils of the Holocaust, was a heartfelt story that showed the grim reality of the concentration camps. One of the author’s relatives was a survivor of the atrocities, so that story had great details and compassion for the victims. It’s longer than most of the stories and has more depth because of it.

Some of these stories are very dark, involving such themes as abuse, suicide and drug addiction. There’s one that is a Kafta-esque nightmare. Another makes me glad to have had a happy childhood.

Personally, I prefer when the author’s displays his macabre sense of humour, like in DNR, or when he focuses on the relationships between characters, like in A Sick Sense of Humor.

All are well-written, even if the subject matter is not to your taste.

If you like a quick dose of darkness, you might like reading Chad Miller’s The Void.

The Review

This was a fantastic and diverse collection of stories. The author did a wonderful job of developing heart and emotions into a rich dynamic between character growth and narrative in such a short amount of time. The ways in which the stories varied and played out were what added to the diverse narrative the author was sharing. From the painful and horrific experiences of addiction and parenthood to the humorous yet identifiable problem of mother nature’s call to the tragedy of WWII and the horrors the Jewish people faced, each story connected a very relatable yet equally terrifying horror moment to our own lives and experiences.

The thing that stood out to me however was the author’s ability to utilize a strong sense of pacing in the narrative. Not one single story in the author’s collection felt rushed or incomplete somehow, which is quite unique when you consider the number of stories the collection features and how varied the length of each story is. Yet each story hit both the emotional and thrill factors that one would expect from a horror collection, and the author’s ability to transport readers into these stories so effortlessly was incredible to read.

The Verdict

Fast-paced, entertaining, and moving, author Chad Miller’s “The Void: 15 Creepy Tales” is a must-read short story collection that readers won’t be able to put down. The rich variety of characters and the relatable yet equally profound horror moments were an excellent exploration of the human condition and humanity as a whole, and the author’s talent shines so brightly that I cannot wait to read more of the author’s work in the future.
