I cannot believe that this masterpiece is a debut!

Being a mostly audiobook listener, I’m not one to take on an over 775-page ARC. I simply don’t have the time to sit down and read.

But when I saw “A Queen’s Game” in the Book Siren’s email, I made time for it because it intrigued me.

And I’m so glad I did! I absolutely loved this story! Let’s start with the incredible amount of world building that Eri accomplished! The two maps, pronunciation guide of all the characters and places, the council of ministers…all were so helpful while reading but the best portion was in the writing itself!

Then there is all the ground work of establishing the stories of the three main characters, all women from different societal tiers, and the men in their lives. I will admit this book is a marathon not a sprint and, at times, I was a little impatient for things to move along but, once things did start happening, I realized I enjoyed it so much more because of all the information.

I loved the plot twists, the political intrigue! Eri is a master of keeping you guessing…I still have So Many Questions! I put them all in my kindle notes and I look forward to the sequel where, hopefully, they’ll be answered.

Despite not having all the answers, I loved the ending! Loved it! And I’m so excited to see how all the characters fare in the next book! Especially my new favorite character, Elyse. I’m so intrigued with her story!

In conclusion, a fabulous debut, and I feel like the sequel will move faster due to all the groundwork that was completed in this first novel. I fervently wish that this gets an audiobook format (and a hardcover option, for that matter) because, even though I’ve read it, I would gladly listen to this incredible story!

If you like stories about elves, political intrigue, queens & kings, racial injustice, magic, amazing characters and world building, mental health & LGBT+ representation, sexy times…it’s all here! Enjoy!!

Thank you so much to Book Sirens for my ebook review copy but I did buy a paperback edition for my shelves and to support this amazing new author!

Usually I have a quote that I particularly liked to start off my reviews. But all of the quotes I marked were plot based where I commented either "the plot thickens" or "ew".

So I really loved the premise of this. Court intrigue?? A cast of morally grey and well rounded characters? Don’t know who to trust and who you are supposed to like? SIGN ME UP. A Queen's Game is a slower paced fantasy story centered around the inner politics of a kingdom that favors the Elf race over half-elves and humans. We get the pov of three different women who all eventually play a different role in the kingdom. We get to read about how they navigate court life and the plot takes off from there. THIS IS A PSA. This is not a romance, nothing in this book is romantic.

This review has MAJOR MAJOR SPOILERS. This is your last warning.

I have to say, there wasn't a lot of reviewing in this review. But to sum it up. This book spent way too long dealing with Marietta and Keyain's relationship that went absolutely nowhere. Valeriya was robbed of a decent story arc. I think this book was too long for something solely focused on political intrigue and complex relationships. If a book is this long, I need variety in the content. Not just conversations that take place in a garden or a bedroom. The first 50% was super interesting, but my interest only took me so far. I think this could have been edited down a lot, and the outcome of the story would have been the same. Overall, not bad, but if I am going to read another 800 page sequel, it better be the best goddamn sequel in the entire world.

(Disclaimer: I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.)

This was an 800+ page book … that simply FLEW by. I had so much fun reading (and heartbreak, and stress, and all those glorious intense feelings most readers delight in). Eri Leigh has a gift for creating simmering tension and seamlessly integrating worldbuilding in a way that wasn’t tedious or info-dumpy at all. The writing was easy to follow and the characterization was great.

I enjoyed each of our 3 main POVs – all adult women. While Marietta feels like the “main” MC, I appreciated the switches in perspectives and rooted for all 3 leading ladies. Additionally, because of the whiplash of court politic moves, it was helpful to watch events play out from the eyes of a variety of characters holding different amounts of power.

Something AMAZING the author did was to create an online treasure trove of resources. You can scan a QR code at the front of the book and be led to a site with some typical tools (pronunciation guide, maps, court roles) but also some fun & creative elements (Pinterest boards for the main characters, playlists ... I think she may add some recipes?). This helped immerse me in the world and was a great reference for new-fantasy-world confusion.

While there is LGBT+ rep (one of the 3 main POVs is gay), the scenes with sexual content were straight. Just as a heads up!

There was one scene that made me roll my eyes a bit when the characters were trying to be sly .. and talking in the worst “code” possible. That was probably the only moment where I took a step back from the action.

The last bit was twist after twist after twist ... and I loved it.

A Queen’s Game doesn’t quite end on a cliffhanger but it DOES leave an opening for followup books. There are so many threads I’m excited to follow! I can’t wait to dive deeper into Eri Leigh’s creative world.

CW: kidnapping, sexual content, sexual harassment/assault, domestic abuse (physical assault, emotionally abusive relationship), toxic relationship, drug & alcohol use (sometimes without consent), depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, death, confinement, chronic illness.

6 FREAKING STARS!!!
This is an all time favorite! This gave me the same feeling as when I first read Throne of Glass! Just everything I love in a book!! How can the writing be so so good?!? The schemes, the lies, the marriages and secret affairs!!! Soooo addictive! I didn’t want this book to end so I didn’t want to finish it too soon, I read this slowly so I could savor all of it! BOOK 2 here I come!

Disclaimer: I received a free advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review, which I am leaving voluntarily.

There was a lot I really enjoyed about this book, and a lot I was not as wild about. I will also be as spoiler-free as possible!

I’ll start with the positives. From reading this book, it’s clear how much love and time went into crafting the story and its setting. I loved all the bonus content Eri Leigh included--there’s a pronunciation guide, maps, a who’s who of the king’s court, and even a QR code that the reader can scan to have all this information brought up on their phone while they read. The worldbuilding is expansive and well thought out. There was a diverse cast of characters (in terms of race, gender, and sexuality), and themes such as race relations, truth, identity, and the importance of consent were handled well. I was genuinely surprised by a lot of the plot twists, and the relationship between Marietta, Wyltam, and Keyain constantly kept me on my toes. The last 40-60 pages absolutely flew by, and I am curious to see where the story goes!

However, I did have some issues. There’s a good amount of grammar and spelling mistakes, as well as words being mixed up (naval instead of navel, broach instead of brooch, etc.). The spelling of one minor character’s name changed partially through the book. These errors in no way make the book unreadable--it’s just more than you may want to see in a published book. Valeriya, one of the POV characters, felt flat and I found myself questioning how necessary her POV chapters really were. A good amount of dialogue between characters felt forced, especially since an explanation of what was being said often followed the dialogue. This was particularly jarring in political/court intrigue scenes, when half the fun comes from guessing what the backhanded comments really mean. It was like being told a joke’s punchline and then having it explained to you even though you already got the joke. Worldbuilding facts were also overexplained at times, and it was difficult to feel truly immersed as a result. There were no holes left for the reader to fill in or theorize about, so I didn’t feel very connected to the characters.

Overall, I did like A Queen’s Game and am interested to see where the story goes if more books are written! As another reviewer mentioned, the end of the story isn’t quite a cliffhanger, but there are many questions left unanswered that could be explored in sequels.

Finishing this book is one of the biggest regrets of my life. Kept reading reviews to push through the terrible writing, confusing world building, and lack of any redeemable characters because it would get better at the end! No! It didn’t! Once the pace does pick up it’s rushed and still somehow lacking in plot. Save yourself

This book was massive. Over 800 pages. Yet, it did not feel long. There was so much politicking and scheming! The drama 👌🏻 Reminded me of GoT. There isn’t too much action, so know that going in. When I thought I knew a characters motives, I was wrong. There are 3 strong women POVs. A commoner turned noble, the queen, and a noble lady. The men are…Conflicting 😂 *fingers crossed for more of a certain pair* there are a few TWs. Also some 🌶. I am definitely looking forward to the next installment.

A Queens Game

Little sum up (not really):
The book follows three POVs of female characters that ended up in the same court by different circumstances. All of them had a huge history and had bad experiences that only made them stronger, which I love! All three have different positions at this Court which makes the Worldbuilding in the book so easy to follow. Lastly this book has lost of twists, schemes and different alliances. You can never be sure who to trust!

My view on the moral of the story:
As I said, there are three females going through a ton of $hit but they develop through out the story and only grow stronger, especially with other female support around them. I do love my woman empowerment. We also get a discourse between the races and while reading the book you’ll learn so much about politics, tactics and different views, which I love.

Structure and writing:
The story is very complex and detailed since it follows three main characters. It’s a thick book with lots of input, which you have to be up to, but is exactly what I love.

I love the writing style it’s easy to follow and very professional, I loved the pacing!!!

Bookish:
We get multiple beautiful illustrated maps!!

Favorite characters:
Elyse: she deserves the world and I only want her to grow even more!
Marietta: she’s a Queen honestly, she’s a business woman and so independent what a role model!
Wyltam: I had mixed feelings but only wanted to love him ah

Side note:
Please check TWs and we do have spice in it 🌝

The biggest downside of this book is the slow pace. It takes a while to really get into it. Premise is interesting and there’s a lot of politics at play. Characters are alright. There were some twists and turns at the end that kept my attention for sure. 3.5/4 out of 5

DNF - it’s me, it’s not you. But she a thick book and isn’t a standalone…so I’m not going to push through when there are things already bothering me. Like the concept though, who knows you may like it more than me

Game of Thrones level of court politics, deceit, and intrigue but make it more women empowerment.

First, thank you to the author & BookSirens for providing the ARC for my honest review because this might be one of the best books I’ve read and I need book two right now. I don’t know if I could say everything I loved about this book in this review, but I’m going to try to hit the main points.

I will say the beginning was a little slow for me. But the moment we started meeting the other narrators, the story took off running. And we sprinted through the marathon. The world building was fascinating but it was the three narrator’s personal journeys and their role in this larger game that made it hard for me to put this book down. Plus, I love when I get I pulled along and deceived and gaslit by just words on a page. Literally, I reached a point where I wasn’t sure if this particular character was also going to betray me but I was going to live and die for them.

Now the whole story was super eventful, keeping me in a chokehold, but that last 30% was plot twists after plot twist after plot twist. And they were so intricately woven in that if you weren’t paying attention, you’ll miss them, which reminded me of reading Game of Thrones.

This whole book was beautifully written to drag you in, to have you feel the things our narrators feel, while being thought-provoking. Everyone should add this book to their TBR because it will become your next favorite read and you will join me in suffering till the next book comes out.

Disclaimer: i recieved an ARC and am leaving this review voluntarily. I was so excited for this book when I saw the posts from the author on TikTok, and it doesn't disappoint! the atmosphere and the characters are well written and intricate, and the worldbuilding js strong and immersive. I did find it a bit hard to start, but I think that's because I personally didn't immediately love our main character - she had to grow on me, and that's even better. I would say the pacing was a bit stop and start for me, but overall a great read!

DNF - too many grammar errors for me to get past and I’m only 10% through. It’s slow and there are too many similar descriptions in the same paragraphs that annoy me.
Ex:
“…the trolley rolled by with its clanging bell. A mage sat at its front, using magic to push it along Oak Boulevard. Carriages passed with mages at their helm, using magic instead of animals to maneuver through the twisted streets.”
After the first description of the mage, I get it, don’t tell me again in the same breath.

𝗪𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴
The writing style of this author is easy to follow and understandable, quite professional. I really like the 3 different pov’s, helpful to see different events from them and how they are connected and play out at the end. The pacing was ideal for the story, a bit slow but still ideal. It was easy to get into the story in some parts, I still don't know if I couldn't get into it completely because of the writing or the plot. Feels low-key like one of those dreams where you're so in touch with it that when you wake up, back, in reality, you can't help but feel sad. Cause for you, it felt very real, and wish to go back. I feel like that about a lot of books, and this one might also join the list. In addition to the fact that it seems like the author put a lot of care and time into making the story and everything that surrounds it. You can also see it in the extra content like the pronunciation guide, maps, who's who in the court, and a QR code with access to all of this. This shows that she cares a lot about her book and her readers, something that I also value in an author.
𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙡𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣: Easy to follow, the pace might feel slow at times but it might help with the immersion.

𝗣𝗹𝗼𝘁
At first, it felt like the beginning after the end of another story. But then I was like 'okay, things got interesting’. I was a little bored and impatient with the pace, but when everything started to come more clearly, I saw why it pace fit into it. Although it has elements of fantasy, we can see a lot about politics in the story too. Mixed in the world-building, setting, and plot. But that doesn't stop the drama, the action, and the moments of anxiety that make you turn the page. Even the race is a key point in the story, it is not in the stereotypical 'color of the skin' but in the kind of ‘species’ in the story. Approaching the second and third parts of the book I couldn't help but exclaim and make weird excited sounds when there was another interaction or twist to the story. Information and hidden truth are revealed little by little, just at the ideal moment, for the reader, I would say. It's like a snowball going down a hill climaxing right at the end of putting together all the pieces we were given throughout the book. I liked the ending, what am I saying, I loved it! I feel like there is much more to come, to discover and that is exciting.
𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙡𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣: It may take a while a or bit to get into it, but once you settle it becomes intriguing and easier to get into.

𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀
At first, it was a bit difficult to connect with the characters, sometimes they are intriguing, and other times basic. But once you get to know them this may change.
Marietta is an interesting character, I liked reading her pov’s and learning about her. Although some of her actions or her opinions seemed irritating or very simple to me, I was still glad to see that the following chapter was from her point of view. She has potential and I would love to see her flourish and how her interaction with other characters will be next. I liked the friendship between her and Amryth. It was fun to read their interactions and I see something sincere between her. I hope their friendship will grow stronger with time.
I don't know why I couldn't click fully with Tilan, maybe it was because of his lack of presence throughout most of the story.
Now I don't know what to say about Keyain after the revelations at the end. I don't doubt that he loved her, in his own selfish way, but the way he acted was what condemned him. How would things have been if this had been different? I felt bad for him at times since he loved her and wanted to protect her, but as I said, the way he acted and thought and by not changing and evolving was what drove Mar away.
Wyltam is quite an intriguing character, at first, I thought he wouldn't be that relevant. But oh boi, I'm glad this wasn't the case. Without knowing what was going through his mind, I was in doubt about the purpose of his actions. I hope to read and learn much more about him and the upcoming ship in the next book.
Elyse has a lot of potentials as well. I really want to see her grow and evolve. She’s so sweet and innocent, she may be naïve at times but I don’t doubt that she’s smart too. I don’t know if I should ship her with Sylas or Wynn, I see possibilities in these too but it will be up to her in the next book and how they interact with each other.
Valeriya was also an interesting character, I don't know what else to say about her besides that she really cared about her people and wanted to change everything for the better. Her way of thinking and her acting were a bit ambitious but cunning.
𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙡𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣: Might take some time to adjust to the characters. But it’s fun trying to guess who you trust, who is suspicious, and what are their motives…

𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆
I liked to see that the protagonist was poc, someone that looks like me so to speak. As Leigh Bardugo has also done, this is another example that you don't have to be a person of color to write about them in the fantasy and sci-fi genre. As long as it's in a good and respectable way. I appreciate authors that are not afraid to put us into these stories and more as the MC! Not only that, but we can also see different sexual preferences. I can say that this book will surely make several people feel included, even if race or sexuality is not relevant to the story, it is no excuse not to add it. I'm glad that the author saw and understood this.
𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙡𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣: Yes.

‣𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱?
If you are a fan of fantasy you should give it a try. Even more so if you want to read more about the politics and the world-building in it. Although it has romance this is not the main focus that drives the plot. I can say with certainty that I will read the next book.
𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙡𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣: Yes

!! I RECEIVED AN ADVANCED READERS COPY FOR FREE AND AM LEAVING THIS REVIEW VOLUNTARILY (trust me it's amazing 😫) !!

No spoilers here just a heavily impressed bookworm! Hopefully this is encouraging for anyone who liked Sarah J. Maas, Leigh Bardugo, or Holly Black! :)

OH. MY. GOODNESS. That was impeccable. I was nervous when I saw the length but from the get-go I was all in, and now I cannot WAIT to see how the rest of the series turns out. The pacing- just right for a long book, the drama- gripping, the characters- investment worthy, I COULD GO ON AND ON!! I will say that some lil twists I did get to first (very proud) but the ones I didn't were just STUNNING. The last 40 pages- 😱 screaming!! Illegal, absolutely ILLEGAL!!

The male characters were the ones holding a lot of anger from me throughout I won't lie, but the women were just *chef's kiss* and my biggest ship I can't even say yet but just- perfection. The way I got the PDF so I could highlight and annotate so I would remember my reactions when I next came to it is so funny looking back on even now! I would also love to say on a serious note that all of the TW plot points were handled and done so well, as someone who has dealt with a few of them I just really enjoyed this book (bonus points for getting me out of a month long book slump!💕😁).

Really loved this 100% and I hope this gains some popularity or that when it's released my friends can get it cos all they've heard at the moment is that I'm reading a brilliant arc but I can't say ANYTHING because it's so good I don't want to spoil it for you ( I know so many that this is just perfect for!!)

Thank you so much for this hugely pleasurable book experience, I will be not stop theorizing and shipping THOSE two at the end (wink wink) and waiting in anticipation for whatever is to come (along with this being my first arc experience ever😆💕)! Thank you Eri for this masterpiece 😫 you're a gift from the gods themselves! 😂

This debut was compelling, thoughtful, and twisty!

I enjoyed the 3 adult women POVs. I loved how dynamic and nuanced all of the relationships were. I kept guessing who was the love match for who -- and it did change! There is a mastery of intimacy at work here. I enjoyed the focus on mental health and the introspective reflections from Mar about depression and anxiety with Elyse.

I do think Val was the weakest POV for a few reasons. She was the most powerful of the 3, but still craved more power. Her preoccupation with legacy came off as obsessive and shallow. Her alligence to her sister should have been more fleshed out (I would have traded one of Mar's before chps for a sisterly moment). Val also was unlikeable a lot of the time due to her whining and coldness. I'm fairly certain that she is still alive. I think faking her death allowed her to go off with her lover. I'm sure we will find that out in Book 2.

King Wyltam was such a great character. I had no clue what was going on with him for the longest time. The author did a wonderful job of masking his intentions and still making him a true love interest.

There are threads of ACOTAR here. Key being Tam and Wyltam being Rhys. It worked well in the book, but I couldn't help but compare.

I don't know what is going on with Wynn. I thought it was the King under magic for a while. Not sure what! But can't wait to find out.

My biggest complaint is the use of "dark-skinned", especially in regards to describing male characters. I don't believe there were any bad intentions. But it was used very frequently and that's why it became more of an issue. I believe the author should refrain from this descriptor and look to BIPOC authors for better words to describe skin colors.

In conclusion, I was very impressed with this novel. I would, however, cut a chunk of the parts that I think were fine but not as useful to the overall plot.

The author produced a beautiful story, full of memorable characters and moving intertwined stories. I look forward to the next book!!!

This book kept me engaged the whole entire time it was absolutely amazing!! The character/world building was a lot, but it was written in a way that kept the reader engaged. There were so many plot twists throughout the book, however in my opinion they weren’t overwhelming and it was the perfect amount of them too. The ending was absolutely amazing, and this story is filled with so much love and heartbreak. Overall, highly recommend reading this book, as it was a change compared to the fantasy books I typically read.

On a side note, having the book through three different characters perspectives was quite a good choice. I was most interested in Marietta’s pov, however having the other pov’s was a great way to gain insight of what the other characters were thinking/feeling. I would definitely read again!!

The Queen's Game by Eri Leigh is a book I didn't know I needed in my life and I can only hope Ms. Leigh continues to provide them. Her writing is so easy to read and leaves me with this desire to keep reading but fulfills all the detail requirements I could ever hope for in a book.
I connected with the characters in this book in a way that made me feel I knew them as my own friends and family. The friendships I got to watch unfold made me wish for friends such as them for myself. I am so happy I got to read this book and I am crossing my fingers that there will be more in this series.

Valeriya is the queen in a loveless marriage to her lackluster king. She wants change & the notoriety that comes with it while he is happy to let his Ministers rule. Elyse has been groomed by her father to be an obedient woman of the court until she meets a male who introduces her to what could be a hint of freedom. & Marietta is a happily married half elf & talented businesswoman who finds herself taken from her home & brought to an elf court by her ex. - 3 POVs from different FMCs
- court intrigue out the wazoo

PROS
- Each of the 3 FMCs are unique from one another & are suuuuuper well fleshed out IMO. We understand each, we get their motivations & why they’d react the way they do.
- The side characters & potential love interests are also really well explored & you know who all these people are.
- I AM SO IN for Wyltam & Marietta to be king & Queen holy shit.
- I DEMAND Valeriya & Katya’s happy ending & I don’t believe V is dead just yetttt.
- Sort of devastated Brynden is a bad guy? But interested in what that means for Sylas because there’s something going on there.
- You really don’t know who to trust in the most delicious way.
- The breadcrumbs are breadcrumbing.
- This is a LONG book but wow if every page & storyline isn’t properly explored & necessary. There’s a lot going on but it never feels messy.
- There were def good twists. I figured out some of them BUT DEF NOT ALL & those set up for an awesome book 2!
- We got a perfect introduction into what I presume will be a very magical book 2. This book set up the world & stories super well. This book was somehow not action-packed but full of action?

CONS
- Honestly I don’t know?

I AM EXCITED FOR MORE!

(I'm reposting this because the review I left a couple of months ago is gone? I don't know what happened but at least I had the review saved in my phone!)

I have to say that I received an advanced reader copy of this book, but that hasn’t influenced my opinion at all, my review is completely voluntary and honest!

This book was a 5/5 for me, I absolutely loved it, and I know for sure that I will reread it many times in the future hahaha. I have been studying for exams the whole month and haven’t been able to read as much as I would have liked, but even though I had to study and could only dedicate a little amount everyday, I always had to stop myself because I just didn’t want to stop reading, if I could have read this in one sitting, I would have. That is to say that this book hooked me in from the beginning and has been a joy to read.

The characters are so well written and quite interesting, the plot is really good and even though the whole worldbuilding can be quite intimidating (when I saw the pronunciation guide and everything, I was a bit terrified about this huge, 700+ pages book), but once you get the hand of it it’s really mesmerising.

I don’t even want to think the number of hours the author (Eri) spent only in worldbuilding, but wow, just wow. There are so many little details that make the politics and society of this book feel so real… I also loved the maps (I am a nerd for books with maps haha).

The plot twists and the politics are really good and enjoyable, and even more the characters and how they weave through all of it. I loved every single part of it.

It is true though that the book is long, and I mean long, so that is something to consider, but if you have the time then go for it because the book is really enjoyable. I highly recommend it for people who like fantasy…

I also enjoyed the change of POVs and loved the three main characters with all my heart! Can’t wait to see what Eri creates next, but I can say that I have become a fan of her work and I am thrilled to see how she keeps writing!! 😊

DISCLAIMER: I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily

This is a fantasy book where the politics in this world is the absolute STAR of the show. Alongside it contains romance, betrayal and friendship all while on the precipice of conflicts to come.

The world-building achieved in this book was extremely interesting and leaves me wanting more in the books to come for this series. The atmosphere is wonderful and really complements the elements of baking and magic that takes place throughout the book.

I absolutely loved reading this story through three characters P.O.Vs: Marietta being the main protagonist in addition to Elyse and Queen Valeriya. Marietta is such an interesting character and I really enjoyed how her work was integrated into the story as it made for a very interesting plot. I absolutely LOVE Elyse as a character and really appreciate Queen Valeriya as well - they are all so well written.

There is a lot of truth and information being withheld that slowly reveals itself as the story plays out so it leaves you theorizing about so many breadcrumbs that wrap up tremendously by the end of the book - all while leaving you wanting more. It was a very fun reading experience to try and predict who I liked, who I distrust, and what the motives of the various characters were.

There are a lot of characters introduced in this first book and they are set up in a way that left my thoughts running in between reading sessions. While the first 15% of the book is a bit slower in pace given all of the information it is setting up, the book is very hard to put down once everything is set in motion and the game of chess begins between all of the hidden agendas, mysteries, friendships (that I absolutely cherished), romance and self-discoveries.

While I truly enjoyed this book, there were some elements I made note of; some of the wording seemed to repeat itself, especially when it came to Marietta and Keyain's plot e.g. "lines bracketing his mouth" and other descriptors being re-used several times. Nothing offputting just something that stuck out to me in terms of the choice of wording for certain circumstances.

Another is the LGBTQ+ rep in this book - as I know people like to know what to expect going into fantasy books with romance. While there are several characters who are lesbian and bi, these relationships aren't deeply explored in this book so I would consider the romance aspect of this book to be primarily between [presumptively] M/F cis characters.

I did have to take a break from reading, but it wasn't because I was bored. There was a lot of information and I was also reading many books during my first read. So coming back to it with a fresh mind helped a lot to finish the book.

That being said, OH MY GOSH. The drama? The schemes? WAS CRAZY! For Maritetta's POV it was more obvious who would be the true MMC (it's obviously not Keyain), however, with Elyse? I DON'T KNOW. First I was thinking, maybe Brynden will make a comeback.. but then with Sylas I hesitated.... BUT THEN TOWARDS THE END THERE'S HER RESTING ON WYNN'S HEAD?! Like I don't know! And I don't know who I would want her with! Are we getting mentor/apprentice? Enemies to lovers? Friends to enemies to lovers? WHO KNOWS! Valeriya's POV I didn't really care for.

Keyain can fucking rot, he is WORSE than Timmy Tam, like literal fucking trash. He has no redemption for him, unlike Tamlin. Even though I had to take a break from reading the book, it wasnt boring. The story the character building was good. It gives Throne of Glass vibes when it comes to characters story. The side characters are just as important.

The story deals with severe discrimination and misogyny the Elves have towards women and other races. The book is a prelude of the actual story. The vibes I'm getting at least. It shows how these women in the book suffered from men who think they own them and do what they will. We didn't get a normal typical badass FMC who knows how to wield a sword. Elyse is like Elide from TOG, where as Marietta is more like Lysandra. Two different women who are strong in their own way. The queen Valeriya would be more like Aelin in a way, her scheming and plans. The only downside is that she died in the end.

I need to know what happens in book 2, i need to know who's POV we are going to get. Now that Valeriya is dead, are we going to get another Female POV? Or are we going to get one of the males? Wyltams? Sylas? I NEED to know

I can't even begin to describe how much I loved this book. I learnt about it mere months before its release and my hype an expectations were far above the ceiling. That amount of expectactions is pretty dangerous, especially if you go deep into an author you've never read before.
The good thing about Eri? It's her first book and boy did she deliver.

A Queen´s Game has everything a good fantasy book has: political intrigue, a well constructed world, some legends that you know are going to turn out true...except the characters do manage to convince you it´s not going to happen. That takes me to the two most important things about any book: the characters are so complex you are in constant conflict, I wanted to hate certain character from the start but it was so hard. I didn't want to trust another character but I ended up falling for him...the the plot! The plot unraveling gave me most satusfaction than all ASMR and chocolate out there.

Our three main girls stole my heart from each one's first chapters. And I kid you not, I would kill for those ladies (and three more of them)

AND DON'T MAKE ME TALK ABOUT THOSE FIGHT SCENES! When you find yourself reading one of those, or a revolt one, you end up hugely disappointed way too often. That doesn't happen with A Queen´s game, the pace changes in an almost perfect complimentary harmony with each scene. You can´t put the book down even if you are reading about Marietta cooking a pie (Believe me, the only times I could put it down was because I needed to process what I just read or to scream at certain males)

Finally, I can´t wait for the next books of the Aithyr Uprising series.

So I think this book showed a LOT of potential for a series. The mythology is fascinating, the politics interesting, and the characters are realistically flawed, making mistakes or having very relatable reactions.

Where there is definitive room for improvement is pacing, which I think will come with practice. There were long stretches that felt repetitive with little progression, but then there would be major advancements in either relationships or the plot that felt rushed. I also felt like there was a decent bit of tell instead of show - IE the character is XYZ way, but we didn't really get to SEE how they were like that, we were just told. Finally, we were constantly reminded about people's feelings and ambitions to the point where at a certain level I felt like "ok we get it, this person's goal is this, I don't need the reminder". All of this said, I felt like the middle of the book could have been significantly edited down.

The reason that pushed me to give 4 stars instead of 3 was the last 200 pages. I literally COULD NOT put the book down - it felt like the anticipation for the potential of the story finally arrived at this climax. In addition, the setup for the rest of the series is incredibly interesting, and I will definitely read the sequel.

All in all, I am immensely impressed that this is Eri's first novel - while there is room for improvement as noted above, I thought it was an incredible first outing and I cannot wait to read more of her work.

Wow. This took me a while to get through, but it was worth it. I loved the intertwined politics and high fantasy.
Ratings:

Characters - 5/10
Plot - 8/10
Spice - 2/10 for relationships and 1/5 on level of spicy scenes and content
Pace - PAINFULLY SLOW until the past 200 pages or so
Overall - 8.5/10, 5/5 on the star rating

Characters: the only characters I was invested in were Marietta and MUCH later, Elyse. Everyone else felt very 1 dimensional and boring even though some were crucial to the plot. Relationships/Friendships were non existent for most of this book and very little was known about many of the characters until the end.
Plot: beautifully written, very descriptive. Sometimes too wordy. Plot twist at the end was unexpected but delightful.
Spice: meh. This is not a book to read for the romance aspect but the scenes were ok. There is some espionage that includes sex and I did not like those scenes. The emotional manipulation just goes a little too far even though the scene itself is mild.
Pace: SLOW. I will admit I almost DNF’d because the pace was unbearable. The author does a good job of including tidbits of info toward the middle to help trudge through and the ending is worth it.

Overall - an intriguing read and the end of the book more than makes up for any lacking areas. Will def be picking up any sequels. I am extremely stingy with my ratings but would still rate this 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Holy Hell! What a read! For someone who lives to read fantasy this book was thrilling. From the setting to the characters and to the way this book made me feel was incredible. The three main characters we get to read the perspectives of were done so incredibly well that being able to switch from one characters life to the other as the chapters went was seamless and made for an easy read. Not only this but the relationships between these characters and other characters that all mingle was soooo good. I was really able to get into it and feel the way the women were feeling, when they were angered I was angered, when they were upset I was upset and when they felt empowered, so did I. The amount of times I wanted to reach into the pages and punch Keyain, my gosh. Especially during Marietta's parts! While reading I was easily and quickly transported to the world in which it's set and the maps at the beginning helped tremendously with understanding the lay out of the land.

Only reason 4 stars not 5 is there were moments I felt read a tad bit awkwardly and in some cases there were minor spelling differences of names that made me lose my entrancement of the story.

Oh, and when Marietta was baking, I just wanted to try her creations and I don't even eat pastries!
