This book is a blast. It is a vivid, realistic reminder of the last thirteen months I have spent doing the Amazon ads with amazing Bryan Cohen’s squad. And it took me years to make that decision, to dive into a nightmarish experience called Amazon ads. It took me two Author Ad Profit Challenges to muster up the courage and, on the third try, to launch my first campaign for my literary fiction, coming-of-age novel, January River. It was April 12, 2021. One year later, I am still doing ads for three of my books.
Make no mistake, I am not successful like Erin in this book. She is nailing it big time while I am dancing on the thin line of getting a small profit and losing up to twenty dollars a month. This is because of my peculiarity as an author who has five books released on Amazon and each one of them is different and a mix of various genres. Such books are difficult to market and there are days when it’s hard to find relevant keywords for my cross-genre literary challenges. But being a proud member of Author Ad School, I’ve seen authors who are making profit, who are making more money as time goes by. Which is proof that Bryan Cohen’s theory behind Amazon ads mystery works in practice.
Self-Publishing with Amazon Ads: The Author's Guide to Lower Costs, Higher Royalties, and Greater Peace of Mind is the book that will encourage you to try something you might have dreaded doing as I did. I am glad I overcame that fear, and I am glad that I am still doing the ads to give better chances for survival to my books. And I am so grateful for having a selfless Author Ad School Squad support whenever I need them, and I needed them a lot. For making ads, for finding the right categories and relevant keywords, for tweaking my blurbs and choosing a cover for my poetry book. I got all that and I know I will have their help as long as I need it. This is something no money can buy.
A big THANK YOU to you all.
Self-Publishing with Amazon Ads is as real as it can be. With a little luck and some effort, it can be a game changer for you too and your career as an author. Give Bryan and his squad at least a chance to help you, with no fear and no regrets.
I thank Bryan Cohen for the advanced reader copy of this book which I was more than happy to support with a small donation in his project on Kickstarter.

This is the kind of information you have to get taught more than once. I joined two of Bryan Cohen’s quarterly (free!) online week-long challenges before buying and reading the book. I couldn’t complete the first challenge due to travel. I absorbed more during the second challenge and got a good start creating Amazon ads.
Now, after reading the book, I feel like I’m getting a better feel for the whole thing. During the online challenges you receive hands-on information with details about how to create the ads. You won’t get that in the book.
I think Bryan Cohen has worked on how to present his information to a wide cross-section of writers. His instruction method doesn’t work for me. I would prefer a step-by-step process. That’s not how he works. He encourages along the way, and often pauses to explain the ‘why’ of the various steps, and interrupts to present examples of authors who’ve succeeded using his method.
That said, this material is such that you have to ‘read the book before you read the book’ and ‘take the course before you take the course.’ The process may not sink in on first exposure. It may require refreshing from time to time.
I don’t know how common my experience is, but I’ve been creating Amazon ads by Mr. Cohen’s method for almost a year now. I’ve spent more on the ads than I’ve earned in royalties so far, but I’m willing to keep working on it and trying to remain patient, as he advises.
The book includes much of the information presented in the free online challenges (except details about ad creation), but has a major advantage—if you forget something, you can turn to the book any time. It’s always there for you. You don’t have to wait and sign up for the next challenge.
I’m grateful Mr. Cohen spent the trial-and-error time it took to develop his method. I couldn’t have done that. I remain hopeful that I’ll get better at profitability.
I recommend this book for authors trying to increase sales, but I recommend you read it in conjunction with taking the quarterly online challenges.
I picked this book up after reading the updated book he has about writing book blurbs. As a result, I was expecting something pretty hands on and how to. Instead, this book focuses mostly on some of the emotional journey and some practical, often--but not only--more philosophical tips. I'll admit, I expected the story part of the book to mostly be self-congratulatory, but I was pleased to find it pretty relatable (even if I'm not profitable yet!). The tips included were also pretty helpful, helping me to avoid mistakes or fix ones that I was already making. That being said, my biggest complaint about this book is that it didn't start with the basics (the content I'd been hoping for most). I was lucky that I've attended Bryan's Author Ad Challenge before so I kind of understood the context of what he was talking about, but I still have questions (ex: does "ads" refer to ad groups or campaigns?) and if I hadn't taken that and was brand new to Amazon's platform, I would have been totally lost in parts. I understand there's a certain amount of vagueness involved as these platforms can so quickly change and evolve, but having a chapter on basic setup and terminology would have made a huge difference.
Navigating the world of Amazon ads can be daunting, even for seasoned self-publishers. Bryan Cohen’s Self-Publishing with Amazon Ads serves as both a practical guide and a motivational resource for authors looking to optimize their advertising strategies and increase book sales. Having read this book during a focused winter break, I found its advice invaluable for revisiting and refining my ad campaigns for 2025. Read more
I've taken Bryan's Author Ad Challenge and it set me on the path to doubling my royalties and then tripling them so I wasn't coming at this book cold. I bought it because I needed a refresher on the basics of finding my most profitable series, writing more books in that series and being patient. What I haven't done was continue to make 5-10 ads a week and this could be why my profits stalled. I'm inspired to get back to it as I write the next book in the series. He promises peace of mind with this method and I can say Cohen delivers. Well worth the read, and it was a good read too! Funny and warm-hearted. Recommended.
An enjoyable, quick read with valuable information.
Bryan Cohen's honesty and genuine attitude in wanting to help you totally shines through in this book. Take away's from this book is understanding the time needed, the patience, and the understanding of what processes you need to go through to create ads and keep them going. Alongside that, he gives you the knowledge of when you may feel like giving up and what it takes to analyze your data, and make the right choices along the way without giving up prematurely. The book almost feels like the easy part in this whole process. The next step is actually creating the ads which is a whole new ballgame.
I wanted a head start during the Ads challenge because I couldn’t wait all weekend long for the next video. Also I wanted more details about the 5-10 ads per week tactic… It was glossed over. You have to join the challenge to get more details. Besides the disappointment of not getting the in-depth details I was craving I did get one thing that beats all of it… hope. Hope and faith knowing with steady and consistent hard work will pay off. This system isn’t fast. It takes time and hard work. But you know the saying, good things come to those who wait and put in the work.
I really enjoyed reading this nonfiction book. It was well done by showing how Bryan helped a fellow author with her Amazon ads and leads us on a journey to learn along with her. One of Bryan’s best nonfiction so far. I recommend reading this book after completing his five day ad challenge. I’m looking forward to reading his email marketing book soon from his Kickstarter.
Great book for those who've done at least one Amazon Ad Challenge
I signed up for a challenge around nine months ago and panicked, switching my ads off before the Ad Challenge had even ended. I decided that it was not for me as my books were in too small a category.
So I was delighted to come across this book with the explanations and tips I so obviously needed to make my ads work. So now I'm ready to have a second go.
If you want your books to be profitable on Amazon read this one
I participated in Bryans April 2023 ad challenge. My book went from $0 royalties in Feb to $72 in the last half of April, but spent only $13 on ads. In the first 5 days in May they jumped to $42..a rate that is headed toward $200-$250 this month.
All because I started following Bryans advice.
This book is a must read for any serious indie author. Buy it. Follow the advice within. You won't regret it.
Bryan Cohen is one of teachers who can make his course actually work. This book is based on a pretty established method of getting your book in front of readers. It is explained as a fictional story about a character who works through a year of book counseling with the author as we look over their shoulders to see how the whole process fits into the big picture.
While at times it came off… well, like a motivational speaker wrote this, it comes packed with solid ideas. Some I’ve heard in the wind, many new, and the fact they get packed as lists and tasks make this format easy to follow. Not the work, that looks like a pain, but the how to make it work once you’ve put the effort in. I’ve got the first steps in my calendar.
Somehow, I got on his mailing list. I think I joined and promptly forgot. So, when a promotion came through for his free five day Amazon ad school, I signed up. And this time I attended and did the exercises. Halfway through, I bought the book. It matches his approach and demeanor: measured and consistent. This is a must for your author library.
I found Bryan Cohen’s book to be very informative. I also enjoyed reading the interaction between him and Erin. I can’t wait to use his knowledge and experience to use in my ads. I’m very excited about this book and the possibilities it opens up for me, starting now.
This was a helpful book, but it left me with many questions. I don't feel I can jump into action after reading this. I wish it explained how to come up with hundreds of relevant keywords every week. But it encouraged me to keep learning about Amazon ads through classes and videos.
This is a must-read book for any author who has a book on Amazon and wants to profit from it. It shows readers what must be done, the consistency of it, and the patience required to grow their royalty. If you are ready to get rich slowly but surely, I highly recommend this book.
I read this as a continuation of the 14-day challenge, and I'm sure I'll return to it as I follow the steps on my own journey with Amazon Ads. I love how the info is easy to digest and apply. A great guide for ads!
This book is a book that I wish I had read ages ago. I have had little success running Amazon Ads to sell my books in the past. This Book explains where I have been going wrong. I now have a clear idea on my next steps.
I loved the way Bryan wove a specific story from his experiences (or collection of experiences) to illustrate the strategies that he shared. And I can't wait to go deeper into his strategies!
As an author, I found this book highly entertaining and very informative. There is a lot of practical advice here to keep me busy with amazon ads for months.
I usually find books on the publishing industry confusing and often disheartening but this one is clear enough, positive without promising the moon. Will give it a try.
It’s a solid book but a lot of detail is missing to be truly successful. I think this book is really a lead magnet for the free 14 day challenge or the paid ads academy.
I hate that I couldn't rate this book higher because Bryan Cohen is helpful in the author community.
I haven't yet put his strategies into practice since I just finished this book, so I can't yet speak to whether they work or not.
But here's my problem with this book. There were major gaps in the information provided. Is there a recommended daily spend to put on your ads? Is there a best length to set for your ads? How about ad copy? What should you use? Should you use anything? How do you keep finding fresh keywords for years on end if you need 2000 fresh keywords every month? Won't you eventually run out of relevant keywords? Should you use Lockscreen Ads? And the list could go on and on.
This book was padded with fluff. It spent more time on the story of an author named Erin than it did on really practical information. I hope that I'm not right about this, but it felt to me like this book was a long promotion for his Author Ad School where apparently you'd get more details. I don't appreciate spending time and money on a book only to have the author withhold information and try to upsell me at the end.
