Every Fall I end up binge reading mysteries and thrillers. I guess there's just something about the weather growing colder and spending more time indoors that makes me want to curl up with a good investigative story. I also love discovering new-to-me authors. So, I gladly added this book to my autumn reads.

I discovered Audrey Walker's books quite by accident. I accepted a freebie copy of a prequel to another series she writes. And this first book in the Sarah Brown series was a freebie special at an online bookseller. The story is short -- only 7 chapters -- but a nice introduction to Sarah Brown. I'm very curious what the next book in the series is like, so the free first story served its purpose. It's not too difficult to suck a book blogger into a new series. :)

The basics: Sarah Brown is a detective known for her sometimes unconventional investigative tactics. She needs a break, so she goes to stay at the family cabin in the mountains for a few days. Her annual getaway. But, her vacation is basically ruined when a dead body shows up outside the cabin. She has no clue who the dead woman is, who killed her or why the body was left outside the cabin where she is staying. The investigation quickly heats up and Sarah discovers her own life might be in danger.

I like Sarah as a main character. She's feisty and a good detective. The mountain cabin setting is great as well and the plot is an interesting premise. But, the story never really hits a true conclusion. It just stops. There is no explanation of who or why. Too many unexplained plot threads. I feel like I read an unfinished story. Too much is left unexplained at the end. After reading this entire story I'm in pretty much the same boat as Sarah Brown -- I have no idea who the dead woman is, who killed her, or why the body was left outside Sarah's cabin. I can't even really call the ending a cliff hanger -- nothing was revealed....at all. Like I said, I feel like I read an unfinished story.

I'm willing to invest the time to read the next ebook in the series to see if more information is revealed and anything concluded. I'm intrigued. But if there's no conclusion or definite explanation of any of the plot in the next ebook, I will unplug at that point. I've read too many indy digital releases that spread one plot line out really thinly over multiple ebooks instead of ever concluding any portion of the story. It doesn't make for enjoyable reading, or good writing.

Interesting start to a series, even if the ending was completely unfulfilling. I'm willing to read the next book to see what happens.

Very amateur

Stilted, unnatural speech patterns and a very simple mystery. There are few descriptive passages so you are left wondering where and who the detective us.

Dosen't even deserve a 2 star rate, I'm being generous.

Sarah is a police detective on vacation. She goes to the family cabin. No one has been in the cabin for a few months so she rides her bike into town to get food and cleaning supplies. When she gets back to the cabin she finds a dead body that wasn't there when she left. She calls the police. After a while the reader finds out that Sarah's whole family was killed when she was 15. She got a message shortly after that "they" were watching. Now her aunt ends up dead, and she over hears that there is a hit put out on her. There is corruption in the police dept. Officers are arrested.
Here are all the problems I found with the story. The writing is terrible, lost of unneeded desrcriptions of everything. The police are idiots. With the first body they can't figure out how the body got there because there were no footprints. Their answer is that the body was dropped from a tree. They even climb the tree to see if there is evidence. After the reader finds out that Sarah's whole family was murdered, we find out that her dad bought the house for him and his associates. The family was never allowed to use it. Now I figure the story is getting better. The secrets will start to come out and put everything together. You never find out what was going on in the cabin, why they were all killed, why they wanted to murder Sarah and why or how the police were involved. This book was a waste of my time and a big waste of paper. Don't bother.

idk how this got any stars

Anticlimactic. Predictable. No conclusion. No motive found. No character development. Stilted language that did not flow. Lack of educated detail. My 6th grade set has written better. A terrible terrible waste of time.

The past comes back to haunt a talented detective when a body is discovered on her front steps. When her aunt is similarly murdered she is determined to get to the truth. But knowing who to trust is a challenge as she uncovers an ugly conspiracy.

The best thing about this book is that it is short. It is flat and reads like an outline. The reason for the murders is never explained. Not a fan. Pass.

Ok story line...

Too many errors that should've been easily caught, in my opinion. Such things are like nails on a chalk board to me and take away from the enjoyment of the story. This is the first Sarah Brown book I've read and my impression of Sarah is not that's she's tough, but that she's just a rude person who likes to bark orders. I'll read another of her books to see if it's any better. If not, time to move on to a different author.

I received a discounted edition of Sarah Brown and the Cabin from Audrey Walker. Thank you so much for sharing your hard work with me. Several writers have begun to sell their novels in parts - five or six chapters and the next batch out in a month or two. Traditional Television series, more or less. I have to say I'm spoiled by Netflix - I much prefer to binge my stories. That said, this is a very interesting series, with personable characters, well-plotted mysteries, and finely defined backgrounds. This is the first of five tales involving Sarah Brown, a police homicide detective situated in the Colorado mountains- for the most part in the bedroom communities surrounding Denver. Beautiful country. The beginning of the Cabin was a bit shakey, but the storyline is as usual crisp and involving. Worth the wait!

If mysteries with a strong female protagonists are your cup of tea, or your beverage of choice, then this new Sarah Brown series is for you. Sarah Brown and The Cabin introduce you to Detective Sarah Brown, a woman of strength and integrity, yet flawed like all human beings. Even the strongest people have moments of human weakness and Sarah’s show themselves in this exciting first book in The Sarah Brown Series. Everyone has moments of weakness, but it’s how they handle those moments of weaknesses that make them either a strong or weak person. Sarah uses her moments of weaknesses to make her the forceful lady that we come to love and root for.

Sarah Brown and The Cabin introduce us to Detective Brown as she returns to her mountain cabin to begin her vacation. Returning from a trip to town for some needed supplies, she discovers the dead body of a young woman in her front yard and calls it in. How she died and got to be in Sarah’s front yard is a genuine mystery. The plot thickens when all the files on the victim disappear from the offices of the police lieutenant heading up the investigation and from the medical examiner’s office.
Then the killer or killers strikes again, this time closer to Sarah, when they kill a woman she loves, her aunt. Sarah realizes that her past is catching up to her, that the same killer or killers that killed her mother, father, and brother thirteen years earlier have returned to kill her. Sarah doesn’t know who she can trust and sets out to find and take down the person or person responsible for the deaths of her loved ones.

The people behind those deaths are people she would never have suspected without the help of a computer hacker she knew from a previous case, a hacker that became her friend, someone Sarah knew she could trust. This storie is a nonstop, action-packed, roller-coaster of a thrill ride. The way this first story ends will blow you away. It’s an ending that is satisfying in its self, while setting you up for the next book in the series, Sarah Brown and The Family Secrets. Although I suspect that these books can be read in any order and enjoyed, I strongly recommend that they be read in the order that Audrey Walker wrote them because each new plot, each new storyline builds upon the one before it.

Well it started off well, Sarah Brown is a detective who goes away on a 2wk holiday to a cabin that her family own. She pedals off into town to get provisions and when she gets back (having not sorted out the lights before she set off), she sees something mound-like in the garden. On investigating she discovers it is the body of a young girl. She rings the equivalent of 999 in north america and soon a shed load of police officers descend as well as a guy whose name I've completely forgotten, but he has been her mentor and her rock for the past 15yrs whilst she's been working with him.

Soon after this she discovers another body in her garden, this time it's her last living relative her auntie Clare. It then transpires that her entire family were murdered some 15yrs before, not sure if it was in that cabin? Anyway the local young good looking police chief is suspicious. Well he would be a rubbish detective if he were not. The post mortem reports of the first girl's body have gone walkabout so they have no definite cause of death and the aunt's body isn't faring much better. Sarah is now left thinking who exactly can she trust?

It is a bit strange and I confess to losing interest now as Sarah herself isn't exactly a two dimensional character, let alone a three one, and all the characters appear to be as one dimensional as she is. Then just when you get to the end and think aha a conclusion is now being reached, the book ends. I hadn't realised that you now have to buy the next book to find out the ending of this one and who in the police force is working against her and her family. If I were her at his point I would change my name and leave the state, and find alternative work. After all she is the last family member left standing.

I won't be buying the next book, I never do if they leave you standing in wonderment and thinking I've just invested how many hours reading this book? I won't invest any more to any author who leaves me unsatisfied.

Who CAN Sarah Really Trust?

by Barbara Kelley

Wowsa, wowsa, wowsa! What a great storyline, plot, and character developments this book has, and reads just like a television detective series would. Sarah Brown and the Cabin is Book 1 of the Sarah Brown Detective series, written perfectly by Audrey Walker. So far, I have loved every book I have read by this author, and plan on continuing this series, as well as all of the Shelby Griffin series'.

This first book introduces us to Sarah Brown, a police detective in her hometown. About 16 years earlier, Sarah's entire family (mother, father, and older brother) were murdered, and their killer(s) were never caught. She grew up to become a police detective so that she could, hopefully, find their killer(s). Sarah has worked hard and has taken a much-needed vacation at her family cabin. The cabin is on the outskirts of the town she lives in. She realizes how dirty the cabin is and that there is no food in it, so she goes to the store to buy cleaning supplies and nonperishable groceries. She rides a bike to do so. After the shopping trip, she stops by a restaurant to eat. When she gets home, she finds the body of a young woman near her porch. Thus, the story begins. The story introduces us to her partner, William, and the police lieutenant, Noah, who I am not ashamed to say I fell in love with at first sight. Needless to say, Sarah's vacation does not start off on the right foot. We are introduced to the coroner, the waitress at the restaurant, and some various police officers whose names are not given. The, two or three weeks later, Sarah's aunt is found dead in almost the same place as the previous young woman. It seems that somebody is out to get Sarah. Can she find out who it is and why the want to end her, or will she wind up like her family members? I gave this first episode a 5 star rating and will be reading Book 2 next!

*This was a complimentary copy from the author via a newsletter*

I had read ‘He is Payne’ by the same author and liked the writing but hated the character, so I thought I would try another series to see if I liked the main character better. I ended up being utterly disappointed for a number of reasons.

First, it’s described as a novella, but it really just seems to be seven chapters of a bigger book as there is no conclusion to the plot line. We don’t find out who the first dead woman is, why she was killed or who did it. There is an arrest at the end of the book, but the evidence is flimsy, circumstantial, probably illegally obtained and not even related to the first death.

Secondly, the writing is terrible. The sentences are uneven and awkwardly phrased, with few conjunctions and the speech of the characters is stilted and unnatural, mostly without contractions. Sarah is supposed to be an amazing detective, but we aren’t shown any of her work, nor is it mentioned by being discussed between any other characters. Instead, the author simply tells us. Sarah doesn’t even do much detecting but rather seems to mope around for the first six chapters before getting aid from a previously unmentioned friend who comes in like a Deus ex machina to save the day.

Thirdly, the ‘whole family getting killed’ trope is getting a bit stale. Good grief, Sarah Brown, you’re not the first literary character to have your whole family die. You’re not even the first this year. For me you’re the third in three months which probably says more about my reading habits but never mind that. Anyway, why did you wait so long before telling your cop partner about your family history? Wouldn’t it be one of the first things that got discussed? You know, like “Why did you become a cop?” “Oh, my whole family was killed so I thought I’d become a cop to solve the crime.” “And did you solve it?” “No, it's still a mystery.”

Sarah Brown and the Cabin feels more like a synopsis than an actual book, and Sarah feels more like a cardboard cutout than a person. I'm not going to bother with any more of this series,

Sara is a local police ace detective who has a reputation for solving cases. She tries, every year, to go to the cabin in the Mountains, to bleed some tension off and reconnect with nature. Finally on vacation, she decides to go shopping for the essentials and take in a meal at the same time.. Letting her hair down with 3 glasses of wine, and a meal. Tipsy, she gets on her bike and rides back to the cabin where she notices a mound of what appears to be dirt in front of her porch. However, the mound of dirt covers a Blanquette with the dead body of a young woman underneath. 9-1-1 is called. However, the event will take Sara back on memory lane.
The author, masterfully writes a story that is full of questions, betrayals, unsolved crime events, and corruption at the highest level doubled with the excruciating pain of loss. The story is gripping and virtually takes the reader on a trip where all sorts of speculations surface within this well-conceived plot filled with twists and turns that turns this very short book into a page-turner. It is to be noted that the end arrives at a speed that exceeds the rhythm of the written story and leaves the reader wondering what happens to the people implicated and what was the purpose behind the murder as well as who is the victim? Nowhere, have I seen a note from the author stating that the story continues with the follow-up of the investigation. That costs 1 Star in this review. 4 Stars.

A new Series by an incredible author who not only keeps you turning pages and wanting more, but keeps you on the edge of your seat! Sarah Brown, a police detective with a terrific solve record went to a cabin she inherited from her murdered parents. She became a detective because she wanted more than anything to solve her parents' and her brother's murder since the case the case was still open. After the murders, she went to live with her Aunt Claire until she enlisted in the police force and was partnered for years with William. Although she and her partner solved many murders, she still couldn't figure out why her family was murdered. When she gets to the cabin, she finds the dead body of a young woman who was dropped in her front yard. Who is she and why was she dropped in her yard? And when another murder happens close to home, she doesn't know who she can trust anymore. We are left with a surprise cliff hanging and now I can't wait to see what will happen next. This is a must read series if you like reading a wonderfully created thriller! I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

Detective Sarah Brown is an expert in solving the crimes that are committed by the most elusive criminals. However, death is too close for comfort when she tries to take a two-week vacation to the family cabin she inherited when her family died. She arrived and put her suitcase inside, then took her bicycle out of the garage and rode to a nearby restaurant to have dinner and a few glasses of wine. She sobered up completely from any effects of that wine when she returned home to find a dead body unceremoniously dumped on her property. She is whisked off to a hotel once her cabin is declared a crime scene, and she is not allowed to take part in the investigation. The murderer is good, covering his tracks and erasing any evidence. Can he be caught before he strikes again?

This is another wonderful book by Audrey Walker! Her stories and characters are captivating, and the novels are thoroughly enjoyable reads. This is not a long work, but there are plenty of surprises inside that will keep you glued to the pages until the very end!

Thank you very much to Audrey Walker for the ability to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Better

This story is definitely better than some prequels I’ve read from the same author, by a very long way.

I got to know Sarah Brown quite quickly in this story and enough of her back history too.

Sarah is on vacation at her Lake cabin and she finds a dead body on her property.
The autopsy goes missing and the computer version is wiped.

Sarah’s aunt is then found dead on her property and she is finding she suspects just about everyone she is in contact with. Fortunately she knows someone who can help her and believes she can trust the lieutenant in charge of both murder investigations.

There is a good bit of tension and enough not said about her back story to intrigue me sufficient to buy the next book to find out more.

I really liked this book, although so far every book I’ve read from this author can be read in a few hours as her stories seem inordinately short. To some such short stories are quite palatable but I prefer something that needs more involvement.

Who knew that a story less than 100 pages long could drag so much? It's frankly astonishing just how bland, uninteresting and overall awful this story was.

Its flaws include, but are not limited to:
* Sarah Brown is supposedly an outstanding detective, but beyond being repeatedly told this in the narrative, we don't see any real evidence for it
* The dialogue is wooden and stilted
* The narration is lacking in details and boring
* Characters are poorly developed and bland, including the titular Sarah Brown
* The 'twists' are blindingly obvious
* Several examples of poor grammar or typos making it feel more like an early draft than a finished book
* Terrible conclusion which doesn't outline the motive for WHY the murders took place, and the actual evidence for arresting those responsible for the murder is left solely up to the reader's imagination.

Ironically detailing this novella's myriad flaws manages to be more entertaining than actually reading it.

Please do yourself a favour and avoid this book. I downloaded it for free yet still felt ripped off!

This is another mystery from Audrey Walker, offering much potential as it undoubtedly moves on to a full new series with interesting new characters. No character cameos from past books here!

Sarah Brown is a detective on holiday. When she finds a dead girl outside her cabin with no obvious evidence of how she died, it comes as a complete surprise. Yet, despite being one of the best detectives on the force, she is unable to investigate because of her involvement. Who killed the girl? How did they do it? Why did they do it? Why did they dump the body outside her cabin? Was it just bad luck, or is there some reason she was targeted?

Answers in the book should you choose to read it! At the time of writing this book is available free on Amazon UK, so well worth the price. Even at the usual price it is still good value, and a useful comparatively quick read if you don't have time for a thousand page epic right now...

Sarah Brown and the Cabin is book one in the Sarah Brown Series. The series is written by Audrey Walker. This was my first book that I have read by this author, and it will not be my last. Detective Sarah Brown is a real feeling character who is a little bit rugged around the edges. She has some questionable investigation skills.

Sarah is ready for a break - she goes to a mini vacation to a family cabin in the mountains. She knows she needs to try and relax. However a dead body shows up ruining her me time. Suddenly Sarah’s tragic pass may be catching up to her - and Sarah may be the next target.

The book is a quick read, and moves at a fast pace. I enjoyed getting to know Sarah. I hope to read more from this author. I downloaded a copy of this book - due a promotion in the author’s newsletter - all thoughts are my own.

Sarah is on the Case and Won’t Let Go!

Sarah has gone to the family cabin for a much needed vacation. After she returns from town she stumbles onto a dead body in front of the cabin. Soon the police come to take over the scene and tell Sarah that she can’t stay there. When the police can’t determine how the woman was killed, Sarah steps in to find out what happened.

There is a lot going on behind the scenes with mysterious goings on, disappearing paperwork on the deceased and another dead body. Sarah works to find out who is responsible and bring them to justice.

The further I got to reading in the book, the more I couldn’t put it down. I hope there are more books to come with Sarah and Lieutenant Noah Fields in them.

Detective Sarah Brown is taking sine vacation time at her family Cabin. But she doesn’t get to enjoy it this time. After going into Town to get supplies and a meal she comes home to a body. The lack of clues to how this young woman died reminds Sarah of another crime scene where it looked like the perfect crime due to lack of evidence. Sarah isn’t allowed to work in the case since the body is in her property. But as more things start to happen she feels someone could be coming for her. I received a free copy for a honest review. This is a new series can’t wait to read the rest

I found this book by Audrey Walker very gripping & it grabs you from the start to the very finish, with its many twists & turns. The suspense ending just leaves you wanting more, so I can't wait for the next book in the series.
Without giving the plot away; you discover some of Sarah's past history, including the death of her parents & brother. You are also introduced to her partner William. It had some very intense moments & Sarah really doesn't know who she can trust anymore. Are the cops crooked?
The storyline is well plotted out & I struggled to put it down, I just wanted to know what was going to happen next! And now I have to wait for book 2!
I would recommend this book if you love a good mystery, suspense, police/detective drama.

This is the second book I have read by this author. The first was the beginning of another series and I really liked it. This one didn't hold my interest. Sarah Brown is a Detective on a police force that investigates homicides. When Sarah takes a vacation to the cabin she inherited after her family was killed in the same cabin she wakes up one morning to find a body in front of her cabin. Her families killer has never been caught and the case has gone cold. This one reminds her of the same types of evidence at the scene as her family. The plot sounded interesting but the story line seems to crawl for me. Was very disappointed in this one.
I suggest you read it for yourself and draw your own conclusions. The opinion expressed is my own.

This book is a prequel to the Sarah Brown series. I received an ARC copy for my honest review. Detective Sarah Brown is on vacation in the mountains when she discovers a woman's body in front of her house. Her cause of death is a mystery, no obvious wounds, no poison found in her system. Sarah reveals to her partner, Detective William Dougan, that her family was murdered sixteen years ago in the same manner, no cause of death was found and neither was the killer. There's a sinister aspect to the case that was really engaging as a reader. Sarah isn't sure who to trust, not even her partner William. She's dealt a devastating blow at the end of this book. I'm looking forward to unraveling the rest of the mystery in the next books of this series!

An intriguing novella that lays the foundations for a story covered in the next few novellas. Events are linked to mysterious events in the main character's tragic past and an unknown opposition group. Their power is is demonstrated by the perfect murders, missing reports and wiped evidence. I don't want to give too much of the plot away but I will merely say that after reading this you will be left wondering how the story of her involvement will develop and want to follow her adventures.

In the midst of the murders you will have a chance to enjoy the author's almost romantic prose such as 'The mountains and lakes seem to have a heavenly friendship' to remind you that the main character was having a good time at the cabin before events changed all that.

Just enjoy the read

Sarah Brown and the Cabin: A totally gripping female detective thriller Novella packed with mystery and suspense (Sarah Brown Series Book 1), my twenty-sixth read from author Audrey Walker. A 76-page page-turning read that I finished in about an hour. “I received a free Kindle copy of this book back in May of last year and am just now getting around to reading it and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author with Sarah Brown and The Family Secret: A totally gripping female detective thriller Novella packed with mystery and suspense (Sarah Brown Series Book 2) next on my TBR list. So much for taking a 2 week break from her job as a detective. She decided to go to the cabin her family owned in a secluded area. She got there and went out to get some supplies--She came back to a dead woman beside her porch. She called 911 and sat waiting for them--she had no idea who this woman was and actually since she was on vacation could not investigate herself. Then a few days later after she was allowed back--she found her beloved Aunt dead right near her cabin. Another call to 911----but this time she was really upset. She would have to figure out why all this was happening--was she next?

Quick Read but the story has just begun...
This is a very good start to a series that I think is going to be very good. Sarah is a Great Dectective! She is finally on vacation at her family home, that has a very sad start for her. Sarah lost her family by a brutal murder when she was young, and she was then only with her Aunt. So, each year she vacations at the cabin. This year is different. She gets there, rides her bike to get things she needs, has some dinner, rides back... and there is a body... the timing is just Amazing! It gets much better from there.
Thank you Audrey Walker for a Great Read! I look forward to the next one!
