Shell McMillan and her feline friends must unravel a mystery where everyone’s a suspect and no one’s to blame . . .
With the grand re-opening of her Urban Tails Pet Shop just days away, Shell McMillan has her hands full planning entertainment for the festive event, including a fortune-telling parrot. But her jubilant mood is soon threatened by ominous rumors of the return of Johnny Draco, a former investment guru who swindled money from most of the residents of Fox Hollow and then vanished without a trace. And when the parrot predicts a dire future for Draco and his dead body is found just hours later, no one can say they’re surprised—but no one will say who did it.
With virtually everyone in town a suspect, the police turn their focus on a good friend of Shell’s who was seen arguing with the victim shortly before his death. Determined to clear her friend’s name, Shell begins investigating Draco’s past, his former employer, and everyone who lost money to him. And when the trail of clues suggests there may have been a completely different motive for the murder, Shell suddenly realizes she’s uncovered a secret someone would kill to keep hidden—and that if she’s not careful, the parrot may be predicting she has no future at all . . .

About the
T. C. LoTempio is the award-winning, nationally bestselling author of the Nick and Nora Mysteries, the Urban Tails Pet Shop Mysteries, and the Cat Rescue Mysteries.
While Toni LoTempio does not commit – or solve – murders in real life, she has no trouble doing it on paper.
Her lifelong love of mysteries began early on when she was introduced to her first Nancy Drew mystery at age 10 – The Secret in the Old Attic. She lists among her favorite mystery/suspense writers Erle Stanley Gardner, Mary Higgins Clark and James Patterson, as well as EJ Copperman, Steve Hockensmith, Victoria Laurie, Ali Brandon, Rita Mae Brown, Miranda James and Sofie Kelly to name only a few!
Toni is also passionate about her love for animals, as demonstrated with her four cats: Trixie, Princess, Maxx and, of course, ROCCO, who not only provided the inspiration for the character of Nick the cat in the Nick and Nora mystery series, but who also writes his own blog and does charity work for Nathan Fillion’s charity, Kids Need to Read!
Toni’s also devoted to miniseries like The Thorn Birds, Dancing with the Stars, reruns of Murder She Wrote and Castle (of course!).
She (and ROCCO, albeit he’s uncredited) pen the Nick and Nora mystery series from Berkley Prime Crime.
She, Rocco and company make their home in Clifton, New Jersey, just twenty minutes from the Big Apple – New York
A good, twisty mystery. There were soooo many male characters that revolved around the murder victim that I was lost as to who was who and couldn’t really make sense of some of the story. I did enjoy the main protagonist and her cats, and her pet shop.
Shell McMillan has come up with a great plan for the grand reopening of Urban Tails Pet Shop a community event. Nearby vendors are setting up booths, food trucks are coming in, and a fortune telling parrot and so much more. Her Aunt would be so happy. The only thing that puts a damper on the festivities is the rumored return of former investment expert Johnny Draco. Shell met the man when he stopped by her shop but she had no idea he was the man that cheated several Fox Hollow residents out of a lot of money and then disappeared.
Shell’s big day arrives and Mr. Draco is seen talking/arguing with several people, but he is really put off when the fortune-telling parrot predicts an ominous future following his return to town. The parrot’s prediction is on the beak because it isn’t long before a very dead Johnny Draco is found in a nearby building. While anyone in the area could have done the deed the police are focused on Shell’s friend Rita who had an argument with the man shortly before his death.
In an effort to help her friend Shell starts sleuthing on her own. As she digs deeper she realizes she may have the motive all wrong and if she’s right she may have an ominous future of her own.
Shell is definitely making a home in Fox Hollow even though her mother still believes she will soon be back in Hollywood reigniting her acting career. For Shell, though everything is about the Urban Tails Pet Shop that was left to her by her aunt. She has her former co-star Gary by her side to help at the shop and help with the big Victorian she now calls home. Don’t get the wrong idea, they think of each other as a brother or sister. No romantic vibes there. He does make a good buffer when her mother comes for a visit. Her friends Rita and Olivia are also involved in the grand opening festivities. The highlight besides the store itself though is Adrian Arnold and his fortune-telling parrot Honey Belle. Ms. LoTempio has created a very strong cast of characters. Her Aunt’s cat Purrday and Shell’s cat Kahlua are great characters in their own right too. It has been a while since I read the first book in this series and these well-rounded characters quickly emerged from my memory like I had read The Time for Murder is Meow recently.
The suspect list for this mystery is a long one made stronger because Johnny Draco tried to reconnect with everyone he swindled. The killer seemed pretty straightforward at first, but then there was a twist, another twist, a couple of turns, and then a big clue that helped all the other clues fall into place. I had an absolute blast tagging along with Shell as proceeded with her “investigation”. I loved the way she didn’t give up and kept her head about her as the true cold-blooded killer is revealed. I was gobsmacked!
Killers of a Feather is a marvelous mystery! I was totally entertained from beginning to end. I am so excited about the next book in this series. I have a feeling Shell is going to be tested in a few ways and I will be thrilled to go on the ride with her.
I am delighted by this new-to-me series. Author LoTempio does an excellent job introducing the characters and giving us a glimpse of Fox Hollow, the small town where the story takes place. Although the fact main character Shell McMillan is shown to be a former TV series star quite a few times, that fact seemed extraneous and I wound up liking not only Shell but the supporting cast, so to speak. They seemed to be well-rounded and likable, even her rather over-the-top, seemingly self-centered retired actress mother. Ah, family ties. Heck, even the critters involved such as Honey Belle the parrot and cats Purrday and Kahlua's personalities shown through. Is Purrday as smart as he seems? Let's hope so since Shell has a tendency to find herself in dangerous situations at times.
As for the mystery, it centers about the murder of former resident Johnny Draco who many accuse of swindling them out of significant sums of money and simply disappearing when the investment fell through. Could Rita have killed him? How about her husband? Or the former girlfriend? Or any other of the many who felt they'd been swindled? Why is Shell's detective boyfriend focused on Rita? Could Shell's habit of thinking aloud get her into trouble? Why is she keeping secrets from Josh? Who left the threatening note for her? How about those mad White Boarding skills shown by Shell, Gary, Olivia, and Ron? Why does Shell.....oh, never mind. No more teasers but, oh, what unexpected twists, turns, and danger before all is said and done. Read the book. I'll be reading the first one in the series to play catch up while you're doing that.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #BeyondThePagePublishing for inviting me to Fox Hollow for the grand opening of Shell's pet store. I'm looking forward to many return visits and that local theater production.
The grand re-opening of her aunt's Urban Tails Pet Shop has Shell McMillan in organizational overload. Her live music act has just canceled a day in advance of the event, and she needs to hire an assistant manager. What she doesn't need is a dead body and the arrival of her mother. Cozy full of engaging characters and pets, even fortune telling parrots for added fun. Mystery moves along at a good pace with enough red herrings to keep you guessing. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
This is such a fun read! Shell is gearing up for the grand reopening of her Aunt's beloved pet store. She has a huge event planned with all the other businesses getting involved. Things are great until a man from the past shows up unexpectedly. He took off years ago after lots of them invested money with him and lost it. Obviously he is not well liked but when he turns up dead everyone is a suspect. This creates quite the mystery as Shell looks for clues even putting herself in danger. Add in the adorable pets (a fortune telling parrot is such a hoot) to get a book you won't be able to put down. A must read for pet lovers as well as cozy fans. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.
Killers of a Feather Earns 5/5 Parrot Predictions…Entertaining Gem!
The fur-fanatics of Fox Hollow, Connecticut, are relieved that Urban Tails Pet Shop will remain open. After the sad passing of the original owner, it has passed on to Shell McMillan, former television star. Yet the grand reopening has not been without issues: cancelled singer and the fortune-telling parrot has flown the coop. But, by putting Plan B into action, Saturday just might be a success. The new assistant manager Robbie Grant’s suggests Johnny Draco for the live music, but it’s awkward when Shell learns Draco is not well liked having defrauded many of the locals and then disappeared, But, it’s moot when a man, “call be Ira,” appears at the shop, unaware Shell’s aunt had passed, and seems to have just the musical talent to save the day. But, it turns out “Ira” is Johnny Draco’s middle name, and after a prophetic fortune, Ira/Johnny ends up dead.
T.C. LoTempio has written a delightfully engaging mystery with a town full of suspects, fur- and feathered- friends, and some prophetic fortunes. Shell learns quickly about the busted investment that cost many their life savings along with the no-don’t accusations, and being at the right place, right time, she witnesses arguments, confrontations, and shadowy threats to show feeling are still raw. But, what is Draco’s truth? The journey was quite a page-turner revealing the murder victim’s past and cryptic comment about his innocence, surprise connections, alleged fraud victims with varied alibis, possibly a very good frame job, and additional felonies, but it all ends with a surprise, yet karmic, arrest. The intensity was not just finding a killer with a bit of peril thrown in, it was also the interactions between a diverse set of characters: friendship, budding romance, and a mother that would challenge a saint. The dynamic between Shell (Crishell) and her mother was excruciating entertainment easily contrasted by her relationship with friends, her boyfriend, and her fur-friends who get their own delightful scenes.
Disclosure: I received an ARC from Beyond the Page thru NetGalley. My review is voluntary with honest insights and comments.
This was such a marvellous read! Killers of a Feather by T. C. LoTempio is the second instalment in her Urban Tails Pet Shop Mystery series featuring struggling actress Chrishell "Shell" McMillan. It certainly grabbed my attention and I was thrown in from the get-go and couldn’t flip the pages fast enough on my kindle.
With great characterisation, the pacing was good throughout. Former Hollywood star, Shell's beloved Aunt Tillie died bequeathing her a Victorian mansion in Fox Hollow, Connecticut and her pet shop - Urban Tails. With her plans for the shop's grand reopening almost complete, rumours of the return of Johnny Draco, who hoodwinked money from most of the residents of Fox Hollow and then vanished without a trace are rife. When he is found dead and almost everyone's name is on the suspect list including Shell's friend, Shell is forced to try to clear her name with the help of her cats, Purrday, a fluffy white Persian and her Siamese, Kahlua and other friends, including former co-star and now her housemate, Gary Presser.
This was a well-crafted cozy mystery that had me reading well into the night. The beauty of this book and the clincher for me was the novel's hilarity and the sparling personalities of a few of the characters. It kept things interesting and added lots of fun. Imaginative and thoroughly enjoyable, Killers of a Feather is well worth a read!
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my own request from Beyond the Page Publishing via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.
Shell inherited her pet shop from her aunt and now she's getting ready for a grand re-opening. She has come up with the idea of having a fortune telling parrot as part of the entertainment. That sure doesn't go as planned. Johnny Draco hears his fortune and is soon found murdered. The list of suspects is pretty lengthy because when he left town a few years back, he left a trail of angry townsfolk. Talk was that he had swindled them out of large amounts of their money. As in wiped out of their life savings. Did one of them get revenge? As the police focus on one of Shell's friends as the killer, Shell and her former tv co-star and now current housemate, Gary, set about to find the real killer. With input from her mother (what a character SHE is) and the fact that the investigating detective is her boyfriend, Shell has to hope that her sleuthing catches the killer rather than having the killer catch her. The mystery is well-plotted with some red herrings to throw the reader off the trail and a couple of great cats - Purrday and Kahlua. The setting of Fox Hollow is well drawn and sounds like a place I'd like to visit. I'm looking forward to future books in this series. My thanks to the publisher Beyond the Page and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
This is the second book in the delightful new cozy series "Urban Tails Pet Shop" by cozy author T.C. LoTempio. I enjoyed the first in series very much and appreciate the opportunity for review from NetGalley and the publisher. The author is a favorite cozy author of mine as she writes wonderful pet centered mysteries that are always a fun read. Pets Honey Belle the parrot and cats Purrday and Kahlua's are stars of this fun series.
This next in series finds our protagnist Shell having a grand reopening of her pet shop when her Mother arrives. Added to the excitement is the murder of a nefarious type whose murder leaves many upset over investments with the victim. Shel and her detective boyfriend investigate and Shel is drawn to find out what happened to the victim. I loved this mystery with red herrings, suspects abound and a surprise ending. The animals, birds are a part of the series and truly fun to enjoy reading about. The charcters all add to the story. A fun read to conclusion. I highly recommend this book for all who love pet centered mysteries.

Review:
The characters are well rounded and well developed. Shell is getting ready for the grand re-opening of her Urban Tails Pet Shop. She is very busy and she does not have time for anything else. But when someone is murdered she will make time to figure out who the culprit is.
The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning. I could picture the festivities going on in my mind’s eye and I would have liked to have gone to it. The mystery was well plotted and I did not figure out the murder until it was revealed at the end.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. And if you like animals in your cozy, you will like this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Beyond The Page Publishing, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.
Shell McMillan is anxiously preparing for the re-opening of her Urban Tails Pet Shop. She’s planning for a huge celebration including entertainment. However, things don’t look all that good when she learns Fox Hollow’s number one enemy is planning to return to the small Connecticut town. Johnny Draco is accused of swindling money from most of the townspeople and they are out for blood.
When Draco’s dead body turns up, everyone is a suspect. Shell is more than a little concerned when one of her friends quickly becomes the number one suspect. She’s determined to prove her innocence. As Shell conducts her own investigation, she uncovers more than she bargained for.
This is the second book in the series and it’s even better than the first (which I loved). The author gives us a well-rounded cast of characters. Shell and her friends come to life with each page.
The story moves at a fast pace and takes the reader on an intriguing ride to find a killer. There were many possible suspects. I was shocked by the big reveal at the end. The author did a great job of keeping me guessing through the entire book. I guessed wrong. 😀
I’m looking forward to the next book in this light-hearted mystery with a touch of romance. It’s entertaining and it has two adorable cats to help Shell in her investigation. It’s a pure joy for me to read this series.
FTC Disclosure: I voluntarily reviewed a free Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
This is a great story with a couple of interesting twists. I really like Shell and how she has changed her life. I have a feeling her mother could make for some interesting reading in the future. I must say though that I think Purrday is my favorite. I do wonder about that cat’s talents. I enjoyed the storyline and the folks of Fox Hollow. I can’t wait to catch up with them again. I received this book from NetGalley, but my opinion is my own. This book released on 6-21-2020, but I did not receive it until 6-26-2020.

But her mood is threatened by rumors of the return of Johnny Draco, a former investment guru who swindled money from most of the residents of Fox Hollow and then vanished without a trace. And when the parrot predicts a grim future for Draco and his dead body is found hours later, Shell realizes that people she has come to know are suspects. She investigates to find the truth behind the murder. I liked the premise of this cozy mystery, and the characters were fun to read about. But I felt that there was something missing in the plot. There seemed to be inconsistencies with certain aspects of the main character’s investigation. I actually went back to read certain parts of the story, figuring that I might’ve missed something. Even though the story confused me at times, the ending was satisfactory. Thank you to NetGalley and Beyond the Page Publishing for the advanced reader’s copy of this book.
I am a big fan of cozy mysteries and especially of these books. However, I found the heroine intentionally putting herself in danger at the end of this one annoyed me far more than usual.
It is the grand re-opening of Shell McMillan's Urban Tales in the small town of Fox Hollow, CT. Her live singer backs out at the last moment and a chance meeting shortly after offers her the opportunity to hire a social pariah in the town, though she does not know it at the time. This person angered many people and stole their money and now Shell's good friend has been accused of the murder. Of course, she believes in this person's innocence and gets involved when the police stop looking for suspects. Can she figure out whodunit before she ends up dead herself?
I did not like this book as much as the first in the series, though I did enjoy it. The character of Purrday, the white Persian, stole the show for me. Shell's over the top Shakespearean mother was a close second. Charming characters will keep me reading.
My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC. My opinions in this review are my own.
The second book in the Urban Tails Pet Shop Mysteries, Killers of a Feather by T.C. LoTempio most definitely caught my attention and held it throughout the story. Moreso than even the first book in the series! I do love it when a series gets more interesting as each new book is introduced.
One of the virtues of this book is that right in the beginning (chapter 1) there is a detailed and not too long of a summary of who Shell is and how her life in Fox Hollow came about. So one can start this series at book two and not feel like you are missing too much regarding the important characters in the book.
Chrishell “Shell” McMillan and Gary Presser, her former tv co-star and now current housemate, are yet again embroiled in amateur sleuthing to find the killer of one Johnny Ira Draco. Draco was a previous resident of Fox Hollow as well as an investment business person. He got a number of locals involved in an investment, though risky, which would bring them great wealth….or in this case…NOT. So unfortunately, Johnny came back to town and was meeting up with each of the individuals who lost money – trying to explain and let them know he had hopes of rectifying the wrong that had been done. Before restitution could be made – Johnny turns up dead! With the number of potential murderers large (SO many townsfolks) Shell must put her amateur sleuthing skills to work… and fast, before one of her besties is charged with the murder! What makes Shell a superhero is that she does all this sleuthing AND puts on a grand re-opening of the pet shop she inherited from Aunt Tilly! What a party (except for the murder that happened while the party was going on).
The cast of characters are very engaging. I like the core group – Shell, Gary, Rita (owner of the local coffee shop), Ron (local florist) and Olivia …. And let us not forget the feline’s of the group – Purrday and Kahlua (though she seems to be playing more of a supporting role this book). In this story we get up close and personal with Shell’s mom – Clarissa McMillan (classically trained actress). Now she is one interesting character.
The list of potential suspects was extensive and with additional sleuthing, Shell added even more names to the list. The approach that Shell and Gary took was relatively methodical and with each potential suspect cleared (at least in their minds, if not the local constabularies) one wondered if Rita could be cleared of the title of most likely suspect! Alas, never fear… with some surprising twists and turns… well – you get the picture.
I would like to say “wonderful job” to whomever created the cover art…so eye catching and fun 😊
If you are a fan of mysteries involving animals of various types, a small town and besties being the sleuthing pair – then Killers of a Feather written by T.C. LoTempio is worth picking up and spending a wee bit of time curled up reading this delightful cozy mystery. And I sure hope there are going to be more stories to this series as I can’t wait to see how Shell’s life unfolds further and how many other mysteries Purrday and Kahlua can help solve 😊

(NetGalley synopsis)
I have read another series by T.C. LoTempio before this, and have enjoyed the author’s writing style.
I love the relationship between Gary and Shell. It’s nice to see a partnership with “adoptive” siblings as opposed to romantic partners. Gary is very much the cautious one while Shell is the “head straight into danger”, which is a big pet peeve of mine. That said, I am not a fan of Shell and how she handles the evidence. It’s not as if she can’t work with local law enforcement. She is dating Detective Josh Bloodgood, so he would actually listen to her.
The plot was also very good. I loved the whole “innocent until proven guilty” approach Shell took towards Johnny Draco. The suspects were a mile long, and seemed as if any one of them could be the killer. With a couple of exceptions, the reader could have gone in any direction. I wasn’t expecting one of the individuals until very late in the novel.
The animals were fantastic. The cats, Purrday and Kahlua, acted just like my two, which made it hilarious for me. I would love to meet parrots that could do fortunes like Honey Belle. I also liked the domestic drama of Shell’s mother arriving, but how it didn’t seem to take over the original plot. It was a very healthy balance.
I would like to thank both NetGalley and Beyond the Page Publishing for allowing me to read and review this book. Sorry it has taken me almost three years to do so. All opinions are my own.
Book Review:
I really enjoyed this book and gave it 4 stars. Shell is having her grand opening for the pet shop on Saturday, but before that happens, she has a couple of mishaps that could ruin the day. The first one is that her singer backs out the day before and she now has to decide if she should hire another singer or just use music from a player. While she is thinking about this a stranger comes into the shop looking for her aunt. She has to tell him that she has passed, and he is shocked. Come to find out that the stranger can sing and she tempts him with the job. He isn’t sure and leaves. The other issue Shell has is that her mother has decided to come and support her even though she thinks Shell is making a bad decision. Shell and her mother really don’t get along.
The event goes off well until the stranger is found dead. Come to find out he isn’t well liked in the town. Five years ago, he left the town under not good conditions and people aren’t easy to forgive. Who killed him and why? Rita a friend of Shell is the number one person because several people saw her follow the stranger to the area where he was found. Did she do it or is she being framed? You will have to read the book to find out.
What I like about the book is that there is a strong friendship between the people in the town. Even though Shell and her mother don’t get along you can tell that they care about each other.
It seemed like it was sooo long since I got to visit with Shell and friends at her shop in Connecticut, but according to my reading record, it looks like it was around a year ago. I absolutely love Aunt Tillie's cat, Purrday that she left to Shell. It's almost like Purrday knows Aunt Tillie probably wanted him to keep that good eye of his on Shell and keep her safe. 'Cause he sure does a good job of that! Who's a good boy? Purrday's a good boy!
This was a super twisty mystery that kept me guessing the whole way. I love how Shell and Gary sleuth together. He cracks me up and reminds me of Castle from TV with his bouncy goofiness and enthusiasm for solving cases--and being ruggedly handsome helps him get info sometimes. I like that he's dating Olivia though. I'm not sure I'd want him and Shell as a couple, but there's definitely a different kind of chemistry with him from acting together than Shell has with Josh. She and Josh seem cute together although we don't get to really see as much of Josh interacting with Shell as we do Gary. It was so hilarious to read his reaction when Shell's mom came to stay for a while, but I think deep down he was loving the attention as much as her mom was!
There were some tense moments in the showdown, but thanks to a certain adorable one-eyed Persian, Shell lived to see another day. I was laughing at the very ending and now I can't wait to see what kind of hilarity takes places in the next book! Just wish we didn't have to wait a year!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Beyond the Page Publishing via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.
With Killers of a Feather, the second book in the Urban Tails Pet Shop mysteries, T.C. LoTempio demonstrates how a book in a series can truly stand on its own. The reader never feels left behind or like she is missing something that came ahead of this book, yet the mentions of what came before are brief and concise, not cutting into the action of the book at all. That is a skill in writing. The book itself features interesting main characters, a fun setting, plenty of animals for those who enjoy their mysteries with a bit of animal shenanigans, and a complex mystery. There is a large number of suspects, and some are quite obvious due to an acrimonious history with the victim. I did, however, find the characterization of the cat, which is not only intelligent enough to completely understand human speech but also spell, to turn up in locations where he is unexpected and likely unable to get to, and, in Lassie-like style, go fetch help, too over the top for me to suspend disbelief. These sections took me out of the story. As well, the number of times the main character "lucks" into ideal parking spots speaks of a near obsession on the part of the author. But overall, it is an enjoyable book. I thank #NetGalley for providing me with a copy of #KillersofaFeather .
It’s just days until the grand re-opening of Shell McMillan’s Urban Tails Pet Shop and she’s busy making sure she has plenty of stock on hand and arranging entertainment for the big day from a singer to a fortune-telling parrot.
The man who swindled Fox Hollow residents, including Shell’s dear friend Rita, and then disappeared is suddenly back in town and his reappearance is raising some tempers. No one ever expected to see Johnny Draco again and soon enough someone murders him, leaving his body where Shell discovers it. It’s not long before Rita is the police’s top suspect. But there are plenty of people in town who had a bone to pick with Draco, so Shell sets out to figure out who ended Draco’s life before anyone could discover why he’s really back in town.
Unfortunately, Shell’s attempts to discover who the killer is puts her right in the murderer’s target, and this person is not afraid to stop Shell permanently.
This is the second book in the Urban Tails Pet Shop Mysteries, and I hope Ms. LoTempio has plenty more in store for fans. It’s always a great read to spend time in Fox Hollow with Shell and friends, human and feline.
As Shell McMillan prepares for the grand re-opening of Urban Tails Pet Shop, her mother, actress Clarissa McMillan, decides to fly in for the occasion. Unfortunately, Clarissa witnesses an argument between Johnny Draco and Adrian, whose parrot gives Johnny the Death card as his fortune. As her mother leaves to go freshen up, Purrday and Kahlua escape out the open door. Shell chases her felines and finds them staring at the dead body of Johnny Draco in an empty store.
The bad news is several of Fox Hollow’s citizens are suspects in Draco’s murder since so many lost money that they invested with him five years earlier. Shell begins investigating since so many of her new friends are now suspects.
T. C. LoTempio writes an engaging cozy mystery with Shell trying to start a new chapter in her life with Urban Tails Pet Shop, only to be surprised when her mother shows up and decides to move to Fox Hollow. Many red herrings, plenty of twists, and a pleasant pace make the second Urban Tails Pet Shop Mystery a likable sequel. Stay tuned.
Princess Fuzzypants here: Shell’s big grand opening of her pet shop is fast approaching. She is trying to juggle all sorts of things, including replacement of a musician who has a bad habit of cancelling gigs at the last moment. She is told of a very good singer who skipped town in the wake of a financial scandal so she is surprised when he shows up at her store. She is even more surprised when he ends of dead and her friend is the prime suspect for his murder.
She is going to need all the help she can get from her former co=star Gary and her very handsome and debonair kitty, Purrsday. The one eyed fellow is a heartbreaker and you are going to fall in love with him. He is also a pretty good sleuthing partner. Shell is almost as good a detective in real life as she was on her tv series. Now if she could find some way to contain her critical mother, things might run more smoothly.
It is a fun read and as usual, the felines are the stars of the show. I must confess. The parrots are pretty cool too. Five purrs and two paws up.
This is the sophomore installment of the series. I read the first one when it was rebranded to this series title.
The mystery centers on the murder of a former resident, Johnny Draco. Draco is suspected and accused of swindling Fox Hollow residents out of significant sums of money and then simply disappearing when the investments failed. There are plenty of suspects and Shell is on it.
I liked the twists, turns and plot shifts as Shell tries to get to the bottom of the murder. A friend of hers becomes a suspect but Shell is sure she didn’t do it. The parrot and the cat actually help Shell out. One predicts the future and the other helps her out of scrapes.
I enjoyed my visit to Fox Hollow. It was good to see the recurring characters and discover how they have grown.
I look forward to the next issue. I received a copy of this book days before publication from Netgalley. I am not required to leave a positive review.
Shell McMillan has her hands full planning the grand opening of Urban Tails Pet Shop, the store she inherited from her aunt. She has multiple things planned including a parrot who tells fortunes. A man Johnny Draco returns to town and has everyone up in arms. He was accused of swindling several people in an investment gone wrong and left town before things were settled. Now he's found dead and one of Shell's friends becomes the prime suspect. Shell begins investigating so she can clear her friend's name.
This is the second book in the series and it was a great read. The book was well-written with well-rounded characters whom you'll love. I was drawn into this engaging story and kept hooked. There were some slow parts, but overall it was a fantastic read. The mystery was intriguing with multiple twists and turns and red herrings. Tbe story features friendship and there's a touch of romance. I loved this book and am eager for the next one. I highly recommend both book and series.
The publisher's blurb gives a good intro to this second book in a newish series. Shell escaped Hollywood thanks to an elderly relative's bequest of a beloved pet shop in small town Connecticut. But, unfortunately, she didn't escape her self absorbed mother who can't imagine her daughter WANTING to leave Hollywood after a decent career in television. The other thing she can't seem to escape is finding a murdered victim. The suspect list is long because the man seemed to have swindled s number of locals and then vanished without a trace only to have returned in the recent past. Let the sleuthing begin by both the intrepid heroine and her new boyfriend, the local police detective. A very good read with some very zany characters! I requested and received a free e-book copy from Beyond the Page Publishing via NetGalley. Thank you!
Killers of a Feather by T.C. LoTempio is the second book in her Urban Tails Pet Shop Mysteries series. I found this story to be paced well with lots of action. The murder victim was Johnny Draco who returned to Fox Hollow five years after several citizens lost their savings on an investment Draco insisted was a sure thing. Needless to say there were a number of people in Fox Hollow unhappy with Draco and were potential suspects. I enjoyed how amateur sleuths and former Hollywood Stars Shell McMillan and Gary Presser tenaciously sought clues to solve the murder. They were determined to succeed. Shell's boyfriend, Detective Josh Bloodgood is not one of my favorite characters. He seems to run hot and cold with Shell. I just couldn't connect with him. I enjoyed how this book ends. This is a good addition to the series.
Killers of a Feather is the 2nd book in TC LoTempio's Urban Tails Pet Shop cozy mystery series. It is enjoyable and the characters are great. Crishell (Shell) was an actress but retired and now owns a pet store. She has 2 cats Purrday and Kahlua. Her friend Gary moved to town and Olivia, Ron and Rita are neighboring store owners. Shell is dating Detective Josh Bloodgood. In this book, Shell's mother is coming to visit and she is a diva who is high maintenance. Johnny Draco returns to town. He swindled a lot of people out of money and fled town years ago. No one is happy to have him back. He ends up dead and there is quite a list of suspects including one of Shell's friends. The ending was really good with more going on than expected! I received an advance copy from NetGalley for an honest review. #NetGalley #KillersOfAFeather
I really enjoyed visiting Fox Hollow again. It was fun getting to know more about Shell, Gary, Purrday, Kahlua and the rest of the gang. Shell and Gary have been working hard to get the Urban Tails Pet Shop ready to open. Shell has worked with the other merchants to make it a big celebration. The day before the opening, a local man returns to make amends for a wrong that he caused. There are a lot of people that are not glad to see him. During the celebration, Shell finds the man dead. One of her friends is accused of the murder and Shell vows to clear her name. I really like the way that T.C. LoTempio gives all of her characters well developed personalities, even the cats. There was a little twist at the end of the story. I cannot wait to see how it all plays out in the next book.
As Shell gets ready to re-open her inherited pet shop, she has a full lined up of entertainment to bring people in and help her celebrate. A fortune telling parrot has a warning for one visitor, a con man from the past, and it seems the bird is, pardon the pun, dead on.
Having scammed many residents of Fox Hollow, there are suspects a plenty in Draco’s murder. But who was mad enough tot truly kill him? When Shell discovers a secret worth killing for, she has to hope the parrot doesn’t predict her demise next.
The second book in this new series, it’s just as fun as the first and full of characters you want to be friends with. Good writing, a solid mystery and lots of red herrings…you can’t ask for more than that.
In exchange for an honest review, I received a free copy of KILLERS OF A FEATHER (Book 2 of the Urban Tails Pet Shop mysteries) by T.C. LoTempio. The grand opening of the pet shop is finally here, and it's heralded with a block party event. However, when the day arrives, it's overshadowed by the reappearance of a shadowy figure from the town's past. When old secrets and anger lead to murder, Shell finds herself trying to prove one of her friends to be innocent. I recommend this book and the first in the series to fans of cozy murder mysteries featuring retired actors, quirky animals, and family drama.
