Experimentos que intentan modificar la conducta, oh sí!!

Un hombre aparece desnudo en la calle lleno de sangre y con la cara muy extraña, todos a su paso están aterrados e impactados ante lo que están viendo. Pero esto solo será el principio de algo mucho más insólito y perturbador. Comenzando así una investigación policial en torno a este particular incidente, que los llevará a un contexto nunca antes visto.

La trama me ha gustado, no es un tomo sin descanso, pero me gusta como se ha ido desarrollando la historia, tiene base y eso a mí me atrapa aún más. Plantea diferentes temas más que interesantes en un contexto particular y absolutamente turbio.
El dibujo, como siempre, realista, limpio y absolutamente gráfico, mostrando una contraposición en escena que hace aún más impactante lo que se nos está mostrando.

Horror is the genre that I gravitate towards and lately, I’ve been trying to broaden my horizons with reading horror manga. (Suggestions always welcome) This was brought to my attention and I couldn’t look away from the cover. It was simple but there was something eerie about it.

This was a great mysterious read. There’s a huge info dump in this but it kept me interested instead of what it usually does. There was a lot to pick up on and I can say that I’m excited to see where this goes. The art was great and the body horror was even better.

Ordering volume 2 immediately!!

The purposeful spread of a blood-borne parasite is told in this horror thriller in police-procedural style. The "Law & Order" narrative holds the characters and events at a bit of a distance, but the art periodically slaps you in the face with some gruesome imagery.

The medical details are stressful, but I'm ready for the next volume.

Body horror, a police investigation, social darwinism, parasites, and eugenics.

Not gonna lie, the first part where they info dumped what the story is going to entail got me slightly turned off. I'm glad to stick around since it does get interesting, despite my annoyance for that type of storytelling. I'm a show the horrors first then unveil the mysteries later type of reader, so I can't help it.

Almost disarmingly cliché Japanese detectives, one unconfident and perky rookie, one grizzled veteran, enter a story in which they don’t belong. You’d expect them in some explosive adventure with organized crime or international thieves. Instead they descend into a dark tale of parasitic worms that live just under human flesh. You slide back and forth on a scale where at one end you have a guy going blind and being killed by a bus, and on the other you have two cops talking about their fondness for lollipops. It is just disarming enough to make every Horror aspect of the manga that much creepier. Tetsuya Tsutsui uses uses solid whites and blacks to add perspective and detail just where necessary to magnify atmosphere, while keeping his characters distinct and transferable back to the lighter hearted modes. I at once liked that these characters managed to live in their disturbing world, and liked that those elements had infiltrated their environment. It’s as though his story submerges in and surfaces from pools of immense gravity. It relies on juxtapositions and pacing to avoid nuisance, and wins at its gambles.

Well this wasn’t a actually bad horror manga after all, yes it’s not really showing nightmare fuel BUT it did have its intense moments with showing the scientists figuring out who is causing the mosquito plaque and why is it contaminating people. The detectives Ken and Nao were a pretty decent duo. I will say though to those who plan to read this manga, it is definitely not for the fainted heart because you will get gross images that can be easily frightening to some so take caution everyone (kids, don’t read this please for your sakes!)

I did find the whole thing was rather too fast paced in its 29 chapters, like I really wanted to get to know the main leads a lot better than just them being detectives.

It may not be perfect but if you are able for horror, mystery and gore, or all three combined, this one is for y’all!

It was adequate. Pretty good. Its a mystery story. Fairly cookie cutter, but done well and without wasted space or improper pacing. Art is decent. It has to do with bioterrorism in Japan and the efforts of a team of police to catch the mastermind.

If you love Junji Ito, you'll love Tetsuya Tsutsui's Manhole. In this graphic novel, we follow an infectious disease as it begins to take over people's bodies and leads them to die in horrible ways.
The art was great and very much helped with the horror vibe of the story. We follow the police as they try to solve a very confusing case after what looks to be a strange death, and as they begin to unravel more they discover that it's being created by someone.
I really enjoyed the protagonist, and when we discovered a few more reasons about the 'why' I thoroughly enjoyed that too.
What I wasn't keen on were some of the logical jumps and plot holes in the story.

To begin, we have an issue with an infectious disease but they don't seem to be checking in on who the victims came into contact with. They're not tracing the steps to make sure this won't spread - in fact, the police claim it's with them and NOT the infectious disease unit because someone is causing it. Why can't they work together on it?
We also face a massive logical leap. The reader gets to see the villain and why he's doing what he's doing. I had a chuckle that he was pro lobotomy and wanted to clean up the streets. It felt very Death Note (in a good way) and believable. However, when it flashes back to the police (who do not know) suddenly the police officer is making these giant logical leaps so they're on parr with the reader. It was a bit jarring to read.
We also had the issue of the male officer sending the female officer down the manhole alone. While I'm not saying this isn't probable or right, it's just any detective would know to wait for backup before literally entering the lair of a serial killer alone.

Anyway, I enjoyed this story and would read the next. I hope to see a bit more reasoning in the story and I thoroughly enjoy the villain.

De ante mano deseo mencionar que voy a hacer la reseña de todo el manga en este post, ya que el manga consta de tres volúmenes. La historia se sitúa en el país de Japón y la trama es acerca de un extraño acontecimiento que desencadena una serie de asesinatos misteriosos y una posible catástrofe biológica, la cual es deber de una pareja de detectives tratar de desenredar y lograr resolver. Quiero dejarlo hasta ahí para no dar tantos spoilers. Me parece muy interesante el concepto de la trama, los personajes también presentas rasgos muy particulares que le añaden puntos de más a la historia, muestra el desarrollo de cada uno de los personajes, hay giros en la trama, y que hacen de su lectura muy disfrutable; el arte y los escenarios son simples pero excelentes, me encanta el realismo que Tsutsui trata de mostrar y este es un relato que no parece alejarse mucho de la realidad e incluso, pienso yo, que podría llegar a suceder, cosa que es mi aspecto favorito de todo el manga. No creo que sea un manga corto ni largo, considero que su extensión esta en la justa medida; por cierto es el primer manga que leo de Tsutsui y quiero continuar con la lectura de sus trabajos, me dejo un muy buen sabor y ganas de más; muy recomendable su lectura para quienes quieran leer un thriller de horror psicológico.

I read this mostly in order to broaden my manga reading horizons, and it was good, if somewhat gross. As someone who used to love watching ReGenesis, the idea of an epidemic-related mystery sounded intriguing, and it's a good read. Not mindblowing or anything, but interesting enough that I'll probably check out the later volumes as well at some point.

Comme je l’avais dit dans ma critique de Poison City, je me suis procuré Manhole de Tetsuya Tsutsui. Ce manga déclaré néfaste au japon, donc seulement disponible au comptoir et non sur les tablettes, est plus facile à se procurer ici au québec ou en france. Une partie de moi s’est procuré cette série juste pour faire un finger aux autorités japonnaise qui déclare une oeuvre nocive donc que l’on devrait éviter. J’ai même fait le pas supplémentaire en l’achetant neuve quand elle était disponible en usagé. Est-ce que cette oeuvre est aussi choquante que les Censure japponaise le disent? Voici donc ce que j’en ai pensé.

L’histoire est celle d’une enquête de 2 policier qui se voit donner un cas où une personne est morte dans des circonstance mystérieuses et que lors de l’autopsie l’on découvre que la personne était victime d’un parasite qui lui aurait fait une lobotomie tout en l’ayant rendu borgne. Les policiers commencent donc une enquête qui les mènera à une réalité beaucoup dérengeante qu’ils n’auraient pu imaginé car ce parasite semble non seulement avoir été transmi par l’homme, mais en plus il semble lier à un plan qui pourrait bien mettre en danger toute la population du japon.

Je dois le dire, ce qui fait le style de Tetsuya Tsutsui c’est à que point ses histoires sont terre à terre et qu’elles représentent un morceau de notre réalité et de notre actualité. On est loin de la sur-enchère habituelle des manga japonnais, loins des histoires impossible dont on est habitué. En fait on est proche de la réalité comme il est pas possible avec ses histoire ce qui peut donner l’impression de lire quelque chose de moins excitant à prime abords, mais en fait c’est ce qui rend ces histoires plus horrifiantes car ces histoires pourraient devenir réalité. Tout ça avec en plus une forte opinion de l’auteur sur des réalité de la culture japonaise et souvent sur des réalités de la culture internationale.

Ce qui m’a le plus frappé dans cette histoire c’est tous les clin d’oeil a des problèmes importants qui semblent avoir peu de solution dans notre société. Que ce soit la violence envers les personnes âgés, le viol d’enfant et voir même la condamnation plus sévère d’une victime qui s’est vengé par rapport à la condamnation du coupable; l’auteur n’en manque pas une pour nous faire grincer des dents. Pire encore si vous êtes parent ou grand-parents vous risquer de vouloir que l’antagoniste de cette histoire réussisse son plan tant l’auteur nous présente une situation où nous même on aurait pu péter les plombs. Encore ici une bonne claque sur la gueule.

Un point qui m’a encore plus fait apprécier cette oeuvre c’est que le dessin s’améliore tellement du premier au dernier livre que s’en est à perdre le souffle. Au début les dessins sont beau mais les détails sont moins précis et moins bien rendu, mais rendu au troisième livre l’auteur nous fait voir la qualité à laqu’elle il nous a habitué dans Prophecy et dans Poison City. Les dessins sont encore une fois très beau, mais dans le troisième livre on parle réellement d’art. Le bout où on apprend les motivations du protagoniste contient des émotions tellement forte qu’on a l’impression de les vivre, ce qui est choquant mais en même temps une bonne partie de l’expérience de lecture. Des dessins vraiment très beau.

Au niveau de l’ambiance et du monde, c’est encore une fois le notre et cette fois-ci le notre en son terme le plus réaliste possible. Il n’y a aucune technologie nouvelles, aucun système internet n’existant pas, du pure notre monde vrai et dur. Donc peu de choses à dire à ce sujet. L’ambiance est pesante mais elle est bien dosé pour que l’on ait envie d’en lire plus.

Suite à cette lecture, je vais aussi en profiter pour parler du fait que cette série soit considéré néfaste au Japon. Bon premièrement j’en ai lu des mangas, des quétaines, des drôles et des violents. Par contre, ce qui me ferait refuser de faire lire cette série a des jeunes enfants ou même à certain adolescents c’est le fait que l’histoire est tellement réelle et possible que sa pourrait arriver. Une personne un peu paranoïaque pourrait en faire des cauchemar. Ajoutez à ceci que le dessin est ultra réel et super graphique (il n’y a aucune place à l’imagination) que je peux comprendre pourquoi un groupe de censure japonais pourrait vouloir limité la lecture de cette oeuvre par les enfants et par les jeunes. Plusieurs images sont réellement facile à mal interprété et la nudité masculine qu’on l’y voit est assez dérangeante par son graphisme non seulement réaliste mais glauque. Certaines image reste imprimé dans l’esprit et sa donne franchement la chaire de poule. Je dis pas que les censures ont raison et que ce manga est inacceptable. Loin de là, mais je crois que de marquer que ce manga se doit d’être lu par des gens mature serait plus approprié. Cette oeuvre est un seinen pur et dur, il n’est pas conçu pour les enfant de moins de 12 ans.

Donc pour conclure, Manhole n’est pas l’abomination immorale que les censure japponaise semble dire mais sa reste tout de même une oeuvre très graphique qui pourrait déranger des lecteurs facilement froissable. Un jeune enfant pourrait avoir des cauchemar après avoir vu les pire image de cette série. Pour ma part je trouve que bien qu’inégale dans son pacing, cette histoire est un vrai coup de poing sur la gueule et un fichu de bon thriller psychologique. Je suis officiellement fan de Tetsuya Tsutsui maintenant et ses livres auront une place d’honneur à côté de ceux d’Inio Asano. Un manga très terre à terre qui mérite d’être lu si vous êtes fan de thriller et d’histoire bien rendu. Je suis content de me l’être procuré et je peux vous dire que c’est de l’argent bien investi. A lire et à relire.

An standard thriller, with stock characters filling the police force, but a really interesting crime at the heart of the investigation. Can't wait for the next volume to come out.

The first volume of Manhole introduces us to a mysterious event that sets the stage for, a global pandemic? A race against time for parasitic overlords in a way? When a naked man emerges from a manhole to walk the street, he seems to leave a sort of infection in his wake and it's up to two detectives to find the source and stop the spread as it were.

While this book was published in 2004 originally, it really could be set in any age, especially the post-2020 world era, and we're left with a cliffhanger to show that there's even more coming than the detectives, or we as readers, were previously aware of.

I'll probably keep an eye on this one, and while I understand that the version uploaded to NetGalley was only an ARC, WHEW it was rough between the poor image quality and the type/lettering issues. I'll look forward to seeing how volume 2 shakes out in normal print.

What a surprise! I did get into that one completely blind, just because the title was appealing to me and God was it good! From the start to the end, we get ourselves into a strong storyline, with some great and gross artworks, which involve aspects from the horror genre, but also thriller and crime/investigation. A really nice surprise and I will be on the lookout for the following volume!

Więc manhole, będę szczery nie znam się na kryminałach, ba nawet nie jestem pewien czy to kryminał, ale ma detektywa więc tak go traktuje, wracając bo odbiegam, podoba mi się, co mnie dziwi no ale od początku...

I jeszcze szybki disclaimer, jak ta manga nie ma tylko +16 na okładce to ja nie wiem, no i z wad to tyle XD.
Manhole opowiada historię śledztwa Detektywa Ken'a w nietypowej sprawie, mianowicie pewna osoba w imię swoich przekonań zaraża ludzi wcześniej nie znanym pasożytem, doprowadzając ich do stanu niemal zombi, i tu skończę fabułę bo nie chcę dawać spoilerów ponieważ jest to naprawdę świetna historia którą każdy zainteresowany powinien odkryć samemu.
Więc przechodząc do moich wrażeń / opinii / odczuć, zwał jak zwał, manhole to mój pierwszy kryminał, nie tylko mangow ale ogólnie literacko, jeśli można to tak nazwać, i powiem tak...
10 na 10, nie umiem się przyczepić, idzie prosto do mojej topki mang, a to jest osiągnięcie bo pozostałe to komedię romantyczne więc jak widać nijak nie zapowiadało się że trafi do moje gusta, i szczerze ciężko mi coś więcej napisać, bo już 5 razy usuwałem zdania z spoilerami 😑 więc...
Jeszcze tylko powiem że użycie studzienek jest poprostu genialne, a przynajmniej mnie urzekło, chociaż nie powinienem chyba tak mówić o pomysłach fanatyka rozwalającego ludziom mózgi😅.

Meritum bo znowu odbiegam i rzucam spoilery a chcę tego uniknąć, jak ktoś lubi trochę mocniejsze klimaty w kryminałach, albo szuka czegoś takiego by spróbować zacząć swoją przygodę z takimi dziełami to Manhole jest według mnie jest dobrym pomysłem.

Une petite trilogie horrifique pour changer un peu ça vous dit ? Pour ma part, ça fait un petit moment que je voulais commencer cette série (j’aurais aussi aimé avoir Noise du même auteur, mais ça ne sera sans doute pas pour tout de suite). Edité chez Ki-oon, dont le catalogue horrifique est plutôt bien fourni, la série risque d’être difficile à trouver puisqu’elle est sortie en 2006 en France. Maintenant que je sais ça, je me dis que j’ai de la chance de l’avoir trouvé d’occasion et à bon prix…

L’histoire commence déjà avec une scène assez sanglante, une personne se balade nue dans les rues, elle semble déboussolée. Ce qui choque le plus, outre sa nudité, c’est qu’elle est couverte de sang et son œil gauche est complètement blanc. Perdu, il finira par rentrer dans un passant et lui crachera du sang au visage, avant de mourir, le crâne fracturé durant sa chute. Après tout, il était collé au visage de sa victime dont le réflexe a été de le repousser, logique. Malheureusement, comme vous vous en doutez, c’est le signe du début des ennuis. Puisque sa victime va s’enfuir de la scène pour rejoindre sa copine, il ne se rendra au commissariat que le lendemain… Les événements sont lancés, la police et l’équipe sanitaire ne se doutent pas de ce qui se trame déjà, alors même que c’est prévisible. Le second contaminé a été la victime du premier, il a une petite amie… s’il fuit, c’est logiquement pour la rejoindre, donc s’il est contaminé, elle aussi a des chances de le devenir… Après, pour la police je pense que c’est normal de ne pas faire le lien, les maladies ce n’est pas leur rayon ; mais pour l’équipe sanitaire, ça craint un peu de n’avoir rien remarqué de plus à ce sujet.

Contrairement à d’autres histoires d’horreurs qui souhaitent faire durer le suspense, on apprend assez vite l’origine du mal qui commence à ronger la ville. Parce que oui, n’importe qui s’en douterait, cela ne va pas s’arrêter à quelques cas. Encore une fois, l’avantage du lecteur et l’envie de l’auteur nous permet d’avoir plus d’informations que les personnages. Encore une fois, les hauts gradés jugeront qu’il n’y a pas à s’en faire, jusqu’à, je pense, que la situation ne s’aggrave fortement. Cette réaction à double pas, toujours pour éviter la panique générale et des problèmes économiques (surtout la seconde), alors qu’elles surviendront malgré tout. Dans l’intrigue, ils sont en hiver, donc ils pensent que la maladie ne pourra pas se propager (pas de moustique), mais visiblement c’est un hiver doux (vestes, mais pas de buée à la respiration dehors)… Après j’évoque une maladie, mais il s’agit en réalité d’un parasite, ses trucs sont de vrais fléaux (faites attention si vous mangez du poisson cru, sushi). C’est un peu gros qu’un moustique puisse le transmettre, mais ça ne m’étonnerait pas, je ne m’y connais pas assez pour le savoir en tout cas. La seule chose de sûr c’est que c’est bien flippant.

In the first few pages, a bloody nude man walks in the middle of a street, bumps into an unsuspecting student, spews blood in the student’s face and then dies. A sickening start to this body horror manga about a contagious disease on the brink of breaking out in Japan.

The first volume was very fast paced. So fast, I thought maybe this was a one-shot and not a series. The authorities were competent, led by somewhat grumpy Detective Ken and newbie somewhat naive Detective Nao, they quickly uncover a sinister plot to “cleanse” Japan using deadly parasites.

The imagery in the manga is grotesque. If you’re sensitive to seeing insects (like me), there are images that would make you squeamish. There were also a few panels where I couldn’t decipher what actually happened (the fish? In the fish tank)

The volume ends showing the reader that things are about to get terrifyingly worse. I absolutely enjoyed the first volume!

4.5, since I really had fun with this one; and it also terrified me, as any really good horror manga should do. So, win win.

I wasn't entirely convinced how the story was going to go after the first chapter, but the pace got better soon, and it really kept me both, engaged and entertained.

I found funny how the police chief would drop really cheesy jokes given the seriousness of the whole situation, but I actually thought that was a quirky apt way to balance things; though, mind you, there's a lot of heavy stuff in here.

Body horror at its best, with some eugenics in the mix, for a terrifying experience; especially when you think this might be a pretty realistic way to start the next pandemic/zombie apocalypse.
