Poppy Jones dreamt of being a supermodel, but her dreams were shattered when, after some modeling, she was kidnapped by a young man. Once she told him she was only 12, he let her go with a promise that she would come back when the time was right. Ten years later, Poppy, a strong 22-year-old, decides to give her dream of being a model a chance.
Chris grew up to live his James Bond dream to the fullest. He worked for MI6’s secret agency for years. Seeing his friends finding their happily ever after, he gets a job at a serious security company, and that’s when his team is hired to keep Poppy safe and find out who the kidnapper is. Chris finds himself in hot water when their attraction is instantaneous, but she is his client and he is her bodyguard.
It starts as a slow burn. They are struggling to keep things professional but later on their relationship catches fire and they can’t keep their hands off each other. The characters are believable and well built. The author hasn’t forgotten about the traumatic consequences caused by the kidnapper, leading Poppy into therapy to deal with the aftermath and building Chris as a very supportive man, making their characters more relatable. Sometimes they act a little childish, mostly Poppy, but it's expected. She’s young. I loved the fact that Chris doesn’t complain throughout the story that he’s too old for her, or act like an old man at 35, which often happens in Age-Gap Romances. Good to go author!
Chris and Poppy truly care about each other and their thoughts tend to be a bit sappy and their inner struggles repetitive at times, slowing down the pace at some points in the book, but the light suspense dynamics and investigations are fast-paced throughout the story with the kidnapper showing up here and there. Poppy’s thoughts about the man are one of compassion. She wants to help him, and he seems to have a conscience hidden inside him as he promised never to harm her. I don’t want to give any spoilers here, but it’s a pity the kidnapper character wasn’t developed in the story. I had so many questions about his motives. After all, he gave her 10 years to grow up.
It’s the 3rd book of Cross Security series, and it can be read as standalone, but I always recommend reading the series for an awesome experience.
