3.5 stars.

This volume features some of the most intense action scenes in the series, as well as some surprising plot twists.

MASHLE: Magic and Muscles is a Shonen Jump manga that follows the story of Mash Burnedead, a magicless protagonist in a world full of magic. The manga is a comedy with a vibe akin to a mashup of One Punch Man and Harry Potter.

MASHLE: Magic and Muscles is a hilarious and action-packed manga that is sure to delight fans of shonen manga. The series features a lovable cast of characters, epic battles, and plenty of humor. If you're looking for fun and entertaining read, MASHLE is worth checking out!

I'm a little worried as we enter another tournament because those things can go on forever and start to bore in manga, but Mash Burnedead continues to amuse and easily draws me through the first round with his punching and dancing(!) skills. Oh, and his pathetic best friend and roommate, Finn Ames, finally gets a moment to shine.

I have two more volumes on hand from the library, so onward!

There are some pretty big shows of power in this book from people besides Mash. Rayne steps in to save some of the students when they go to visit Mash's dad and it really raises the stakes for not just the Divine Visionaries and what they are capable of, but also how strong some of the threats are. This had some lighter moments than the last volume, which was fine because it was coming off a big story line. I'm interested in where it's going next because Mash is basically outed as being unable to use magic.
Still fun, still worth reading, still bizarre in the best way.

I can’t wait for the next one, this leaves me in such a cliffhanger like let me tell you, I was mad when the other guy was hitting Finn and then Mash came and OMG.

The way his senior helped him 💗 I can’t wait to read more.

Mashle is one of the few real gems of New Gen Jump Manga with the setting of Harry Potter and the flair for the zany of One Punch Man, it puts to together a story and cast that feels so unique and fun and cool. Today's chapter's ending gave me a genuine ear to ear smile. Can't wait to see Mash show this guy how outclassed he really is.

Ich liebe es. Es is so witzig.

I was wheezing and crying multiple times while reading this volume from laughing so hard. I have no idea how Komoto is capable of taking simple jokes and make me nearly die laughing from them. Oh, and Rayne is such a badass big brother and I love him so much. Not as much as Renatus, who is still top husbando, but Rayne is definitely a close second.

I don't really have anything else to say. This was one of the funniest volumes and I don't want to spoil any of it, so just read it. It's worth it.

Kind of entering a chunin exams/whatever the event was called in goblet of fire type arc in this volume. Some fun gags and nice little shonen moments about the strength of friends and all that.

I wasn't expecting this series to introduce Stand-adjacent powers. Nothing wrong with it, just wasn't expecting it.

I think this volume might be the best one yet. I love a good tournament in a story, and I'm always enjoy those scenes tenfold. Even in stories that aren't the strongest, if there's some sort of competition, especially a public spectacle like in this volume. Now that the first semester of the year is over, Mash and some of his friends are in the running for Divine Visionary and are now competing in an exam in order to make it into the final pick. I'm a bit surprised that it is happening so soon- I thought the arc of getting the coins would take longer, but I suppose not. But still, it'll probably take a few more volumes to even get to the point where the Divine Visionary is picked, so I don't mind. Honestly, I wouldn't mind if the series even slowed down! I love the mundane slice of life scenes as much as the action and fights, and we haven't seen much of the actual classes since the beginning!

The candidate slection exam has been a lot of fun so far, and I'm really enjoying the variety of things that have been going on so far! I like that it has a combination of fighting and practical magic usage (or in Mash and Max's case, a combination of magic and creative ideas from Mash). I don't have much to say specifically about this, but I thought it was an overall really exciting section. I thought seeing all of those new students was interesting (Bros name is Tomato 💀) and I would have enjoyed seeing how every single one of them made it through if I could, even though I know it would have made the book really long. I think it's pretty fun how this exam is arena-style and that everyone in the school can watch it, which makes it pretty funny.

Another thing that I really liked about this volume was how much it put a spotlight on the Ames brothers, especially Finn. Finn is such a sensitive sweetheart, and is the complete opposite of his brother. But he's such a cutie, and for the most part all he's done is cry and follow his friends around. But I love how he had his moment in this book where everything was on his shoulders and it was up to him to stay strong for Mash. Finn is such a good friend and he has yet to have a real moment to shine, so I'm glad he got his moment in this book. Dude was but he still stood strong. Rayne is really great too, and I love how he stands in a league of his own as a divine visionary, not just in terms of power but also in character. He's still pretty cool although he is shrouded in a lot of mystery. I would really love to see Rayne and Finn interact more! It's really interesting how Finn, who is relatively timid, is both under his brother's and Mash's shadow, although with Mash he's so humble and loves his friends so much that I'm sure Finn feels on his level most of the time.

The only real issue I had with this volume was the way that Carpaccio Luo-yang was introduced, and his character as a whole. He's one of those characters that I think doesn't serve much of a real purpose besides as a way to explain more lore or make a quick fight, which I hate to say. And I think having small background characters is fine, obviously, Carpaccio seemed overly cheesy and aritificial. His character design is visually amazing, and his fighting style is extremely interesting and was very nervewracking of an antagonist for Mash to face. However, his motives don't seem realistic. He's not even the only minor antagonist who has had this issue. He just has this one talking point of his and he monologue about "strength" and "weaknesses". It was through Carpaccio that we got a bit more information about the master canes, and how it seems like all of the other Divine Visionaries have one of these wands, but in between the information being dumped on us at an odd moment and and Carpaccio being overly preachy it pulled me out of the story. Similaryly, there was quite a bit of infodumping surrounding Rayne at the beginning that felt a tad bit forced, but I did think it was a very exciting moment, so I can give that a pass.

There were a lot of fun, small moments in this volume in between the exciting action scenes, such as the kids playing their board game (which was the funniest part of the book), more of Lance obsessing over his sister, Rayne's love of bunnies, and Mashle Jackson. I really enjoyed this volume a lot and I have very high hopes for the next volume seeing as it continues on with the examination. I feel like this series has started to pick up quite a bit now that we're going into the Innocent Zero arc, and I can't wait to see where things go from here!

We start with the battle between Finn's brother and Margarette. Margarette isn't my favorite character and the fight wasn't my exact cup of tea either though I did enjoy how it explored the structural side of their society with his brother, in a position of power, willing to take a chance and allow disenfranchised people to attain higher status by fighting for Mashle.
Then we get a tournament. It starts with a decent blend of comedy and action with the minotaur monsters and a new straight man to play off of Mashle. But then it goes straight into more typical battle / action shonen as the next stage starts with basically just fighting Carpaccio. I really enjoy Mashle when it has its ethos really backing up the narrative. Reading the author's notes early on you can get the sense he's struggled and has fair share of issues. And Mashle reflects that in this unfair world with a regimented society based solely on your talents. And like many similar stories it’s about the struggle to improve that society bit Mashle just has this nice empathetic way of viewing those cast down by society. It’s not viewing him through pity but as a basic human as seen in no-magic Mashle or the weaker Finn who is never really made a butt of the joke for it. And many villains are overly privileged or seek to reinforce the status quo that Mashle challenges. And Carpaccio does continue that with less biological rhetoric and more “value to society,” talent-based, “have and have-not's” way which I enjoy. But most of this volume is just battle shonen stuff. The Rayne vs Margarette didn't have enough of a message backing it up and while the fight against Carpaccio did it’s not over and didn't hit as hard some previous fights did. This volume seemed to lack a balance of comedy and action as well. Rarely did it juggle both at the same time which I really enjoy when Mashle does. It did a little bit when Mashle confronted Carpaccio in between rounds but otherwise felt like there was little mixing of the two and more of a delineation between those two genres Mashle falls into.

Can you say "Tournament Arc"? We get to see Rayne's specialty, a new villain to focus on, and more fighting against the dorms. The setting and monsters have great designs erring on horror, and the new villain has a strange power that feels at place in a horror setting. Hajime Komoto keeps it up with some good slapstick for some levity but the tone of the series as a whole is getting darker and much more serious. I don't know if it's the horror theme specifically but I think this was my favourite volume yet. It certainly didn't have any specific rough parts that held me back, like some of the plot twists in previous volumes, but since the end of this volume doesn't coincide with the end of a big climactic plot point or fight it could easily feel weaker in hindsight if this arc doesn't pan out.

This volume has horror, 'bankai', and a tournament arc. All things I love!
