ANNA WINTOUR: The Biography

Rate this book
The Definitive Biography of an Iconic Fashion Designer
Anna The biography tells the story of Dame Anna Wintour, an American and British journalist was the editor-in-chief of Vogue since 1988 and the Global Chief Content Officer of Condé Nast since 2020; she is also the Condé Nast Artistic Director and the Global Editorial Director of Vogue. Wintour, who is noted for her characteristic pageboy hairstyle and black eyeglasses, has established herself as a prominent figure in the fashion world, known for her ability to predict future trends. Because of her aloof and demanding manner, she's been dubbed 'Nuclear Wintour'.
Her father, Charles Wintour, Editor of the London Evening Standard (1959–1976), approached her for guidance on how to make the journal more appealing to the youth of the day. She was fascinated by fashion as a teenager. Her career as a fashion journalist started with two newspapers in the United Kingdom. She eventually moved to New York and worked for House & Garden in the United States. She edited British Vogue in London from 1985 until 1987. A year later, she took over the franchise's magazine in New York, reviving what many thought had become moribund. Her use of the publication to influence the fashion industry has caused debate. Animal rights activists have chastised her for using fur in her advertisements, while others have accused her of using the magazine to propagate aristocratic ideas of femininity and beauty.

I saw the overall reviews for this book weren’t great before I read it and I was a little like… uh oh is this going to be a waste of time? I ended up reading it in just a couple of days. The chapters were somewhat short which led to me “just one more chapter… just one more… ok now just one more…” and read through it fast. I think it is a lot of info but a) it probably helps if you know the “cast of characters” and b) honestly not that much info compared to some other bios.
In all it taught me a lot and got my interested in learning more (like watching the vogue YouTube channel)

I am not a fashionista but I follow the fashion field a little bit, enough to know who is who. I had just finished Andre Tally's, The Chiffon Trenches, which I loved so I was curious about this bio of Anna Wintour. I found her an amazing and fascinating woman of privilege was quite the force in her field. I love any work that shows me how a strong leader operates. so I quickly devoured this book and would recommend it to any woman interested in the leadership and style of a very successful woman.

So much detail. Yes, about the woman on whom "Devil Wears Prada" is based. Lots of it truth and some insight into what makes this immensely successful woman tick. This is a big book about almost everyone with whom Anna Wintour ever had contact. Good. Not great. Now, if Anna ever writes an autobiography - that will be something!
