This is a great book for anyone who likes mysteries! Each chapter leaves you in suspense and wanting to read on! Many of my friends and family have read this book and it was interesting to hear how differently everyone felt about the main character and the book ending.
I just finished this book and it was great. It was a slow start but the mystery keeps you going. What is Jaces families big secret? I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery mixed with a little romance.
“At the end of the day, family can either focus on what is tearing them apart, or what is keeping them together.”
I had never heard of this book or this author until a school event in which Mr. Jackson was present and signing books. As I began to look at his books, he engaged me in a conversation and his energy was contagious. His love of reading and writing was crystal clear and I just had to purchase both books.
I started with this book and I read it within a day. I loved the way the pages were set up inside of a box. I loved the characters, the never ending twists and the complexities of family life. How far will a family go to protect their own? Better yet how far will a family go to keep them together? I did not anticipate the ending and it kept me wanting to read more to see how it would end.
I would recommend this if you like mystery and quick easy reads. 324 pages felt like 100. Also if you ever get the joy of meeting him in person to see how passionate he is about his work makes it even better.
Thank you Mr Jackson. I will start your next book soon :)
This is my very first book by author David Jackson and l would definitely explore his work in future. He definitely knows how to keep a reader engaged throughout his story.
About the story:The story is about Jace who is back in Williowcreek after being away for more than two years. He loves his family alot and also harbors feelings for his ex.Events start soon after he is back in town and situations start happening where is left confused and makes wrong choices, that just frustrates him further. Towards the end ,the mystery gets solved but at a price.
During the first half ,i could related to Jace and his family alot because they really represented real lives and siblings fights. But towards the end is where i got frustrated about where the author was going and didnt give that ‘character development’ to him that i wanted so badly. Also how the end was finished ,left me feeling a little empty and could have seen a more fruitful ending.Questions such as why they needed to save jace from the truth? Why didnt he confess later on to the police? What made him moved back from new york?what happend to the person in the dark at the ending scene? Sadly, i would never know answers to these questions.
The story kept me hooked throughout and the mystery keep me turning page after page,it gave me alot to think about what could have happened alternatively and so ,i am sucker for all-loose-ends-tied-happy-ending but this story left me with my imagination to fill in the gaps.
It was a rough read. The language is unpolished with lots of grammatical errors. Few of the very important characters are shallow and lack any motive. The protagonist, Jace is immature and jumpy for his age. Jace's brother, Dane, explodes at the party for no proper reason (which serves as a turning point in the plot). I recommend the book for a professional developmental edit and a few rounds of copy editing.
A Walk through the Grapes by David Jackson is a story about a young man that leaves his family to follow his dreams. It doesn’t work out for him and he returns to the family business in a small farming community, feeling rather inferior to his brother and sisters. He tries to reassert his place in the family and get back in favour with his old girlfriend. Things go terribly wrong after he gets involved in an altercation with his brother and he loses his memory. Everything he does has a way of going awry and when tragedy strikes his family, he realizes that they hid a lot of information and truth from him.
The story has a lot of potential and has a number of potentially good subplots. The end is surprising. Not at all what I expected but I could identify with it and in the end the story made sense. The main story line is well developed, provides some suspense and a surprising denouement.
Unfortunately, I quite often lost track of which one of the characters were talking and whether they were in the past or in the present. The switching between the past and present were very disjointed and confusing. It did get better towards the end chapters. The last few chapters were very good and flowed effortlessly.
David Jackson writes about random things that has no impact or effect on the story. It sometimes feels as if he has a target of words that he needs to reach. In some places it feels as if the book was translated and not a very good translation. Grammatically the book is badly edited and sentence construction is awkward in places. Words are often written in the incorrect sequence and grammatically incorrect. Long and laborious sentences makes the book difficult to read. The writer also uses incorrect English idioms which is rather annoying and distracts from the pleasure of following the story. I sometimes got the distinct feeling that English isn’t the author’s first language. Subplots are not very well developed and some never concludes. This adds to the confusion while reading the book. The author builds the suspense and the reader is pulled into the situation when suddenly some totally irrelevant information appears, without any context, and the suspense is totally broken and instead of reaching a climax, the story falls flat.
The book follows Jace and his return to his family after two years away. He has always loved where he grew up and receives a warm welcome from his family. The story informs readers of Jace’s background and the people in his life. His dad wants Jace to help with the business while he settles and one task is to go in the woods with his brother. They uncover a secret and Dane insists they keep this discovery hidden from their parents. Not long after, Dane disappears and a darker secret creeps out of the woodworks over time.
Every chapter opens with wise words, summarising what’s to come in the story. Moreover, there are a lot of characters featured so it’s practical for the book to use their names over the use of pronouns. This makes it a lot easier to read the story and keep track of the characters featured. The story is also very descriptive, showing readers how Jace feels, and what he sees, does, and thinks, all giving insight into Jace’s character.
However, this is a slow-burn read. The story delves into Jace’s life at home long before the mystery takes place. In addition, the dialogue is rigid and unnatural, extending what would normally be condensed. The phrasing is also repetitive. For example, the description contains two sentences, one after the other, saying the same thing. The difference is the second sentence is the rephrasing of the first. The characters are also very animated when unnecessary, often shouting or losing their temper quickly. Furthermore, finding Dane doesn’t seem to be a priority for the majority of the story until it becomes important, by which time it becomes a race to find Dane. The book also has a lot of missing punctuation. There is a mystery to solve and Jace takes it upon himself to investigate; however, this investigation takes a long time to begin. By then, there are a lot of elements for Jace to piece together.
I received a free review copy. Thank you to OnlineBookClub and author.
I just finished reading A Walk Through the Grapes and I absolutely loved it! I actually met the author David Jackson at his book signing in Naples, NY. He could not have been nicer and appeared to genuinely care about his readers. I was very excited to have him sign a copy of his novel!
This story kept my interest the entire time! It started out a little bit on the slow side, but as the characters were built and the incredible detail regarding where they live and the small town feel more than kept my interest. The secrets in the Grazer family and the incredible description made me feel as though I was a part of their family and actually in the story with them!
The ending was shocking and I'm truly hopeful that there might be another book to continue this story as I enjoyed it so. I hope to read more novels from this author as I enjoyed his simplistic yet engaging writing style. I read this book in only a few days and found myself thinking about it when I wasn't reading it. In my opinion, that is the sign of a great story and the reason I read to begin with!
I certainly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery!
I really enjoyed this book! The twist and turns throughout each chapter kept me engaged and interested. I liked that each chapter began with a quote or an inspirational saying that tied into the story very well.
The book was an easy read which I thoroughly enjoyed. The characters had depth and I felt that their emotions were described perfectly in such a way that I could feel what they were going through!
I'd love to read more by author David Jackson. I enjoy mysteries and feel that this author did a great job at keeping me interested and questioning who did what and what will happen next. I have stopped reading many books before as they lack substance or generally don't intrigue me enough to keep going...A Walk Through The Grapes was not one of them! I read it in a few days!
I'm hopeful that there might be another book continuing this story as I wanted more. I have not found one yet so I might just have to settle for reading it again.
This is the 2nd book from David Jackson I’ve read. I enjoyed his thoughts and imagination in his story line. Like The Plantation book, this book also had a slow start for me, but an interesting start to keep me going . The same as The Plantation book, once I got through the beginning I had to keep reading , it is a quick read, as I read it a day &a1/2. I couldn’t stop reading because I had to find out what was happening in the story. The ending was a surprise ending for sure, some of the answers I needed were answered and some I had predicted. His writing captures you right into the story, I enjoyed his easiness of remembering characters and writing with the talent of creating a story that makes you feel you are there with the characters. Over all a very good read and author. I enjoyed his novels and look forward to reading more from David Jackson .
This book was...not good. The characters are underdeveloped and several are interchangeable. A central plot point is why the main character, Jace, left town, and the reveal is almost literally pointless. Several characters not only get away with felonies, it's unclear if even the author understands that they committed crimes. On top of all this the book is hard to follow because the dialogue is not properly formatted.
