Dare to Un-Lead: The Art of Relational Leadership in a Fragmented World

Rate this book
2022 PORCHLIGHT LEADERSHIP & STRATEGY BOOK OF THE YEAR

A transformational book for trying times, Dare to Un-Lead will challenge the way you think and feel about the role of leadership in your life.

What is revered as leadership today is often nothing more than a destructive set of obsolete behaviors and systems evolved from the centuries-old industrial theories popularized by Frederick Taylor and Henry Ford. This mode of leadership harms individuals and societies and must be reinvented to better reflect the way we live, trade, and work in the 21st century.

Dare to Un-Lead explores how contemporary organizations can transform leadership from a top-down hegemony to one that empowers people to lead together through the concepts of liberty, equality, and community.

Kotter affiliate and global engagement leadership specialist Céline Schillinger combines her experience enacting digital-enabled, people-focused collective work practices in global corporate structures with a deep analysis of leadership—studied through multiple lenses and timely sources of knowledge—to provide original insights into why these practices work.

The result is a series of evidence-based approaches for reinventing collective performance across organizations in a post-pandemic world.

From large corporations to small businesses, the lessons learned in this landmark book, implemented individually and collectively over time, will make our workplaces more equal, our jobs more gratifying, and our economies more profitable. And that will make the world a better place.

Sometimes book catch you because of their cover or title. Celine Schillinger`s book immediately caught my attention when I looked into the table of contents: Liberty, Equality and Fraternity in the context of Leadership and Change Management -written by a French Author specialized on these topics since decades. What else could I ask for? This book did not disappoint: it delivers value for readers who want to understand more philosophical aspects, get deeper into modern Leadership approaches with self-organizing teams ("dare to un-lead") and listen to Celine`s real-world customer cases and personal stories - told with an open heart and deep reflections.

Courageous and humble
If you are on a search for a complete book on leadership in a post-pandemic world, this is the one book to choose. From the many, many books on leadership, management, and organizational behaviour I have read, this is by far the most comprehensive, well researched and unbiased book on the subject. The title is incredibly relevant - it is COURAGE itself that makes one a leader, and a true leader is actually the opposite - she is a FOLLOWER of the community's needs. I love the way the book is structured too, the 3 values the author chose to explore in a deep, meaningful way. Her experience and expertise is unmatched, non-linear, she is a neo-generalist who is able to see beyond the surface. An excellent, well researched, humanly written book that I will recommend to anyone.

An indispensable guide for business, government and citizenship in the 21st century.
Celine Schillinger manages what very few before her have: Capture what it means to be a citizen in a world going through such profound, paradigm shifting times.
Delivering a powerful message with a voice that is inviting and sensible, weaving her decades of experience in the field of change management, a deep intellect and profound synthesis of French philosophy, Dare to Un-Lead strikes a tone that resonates across the full spectrum of humanity.
As someone who has spent decades on the front lines in driving change, this book has become indispensable to my own efforts.
With our economic and government institutions struggling to cope with the challenges of climate change and digital transformation, while at the same time geopolitical forces are tearing at the seams of a society strained by pandemics and uncertainty, Dare to Un-Lead provides a uniting foundation upon which to build a society capable of dealing with whatever the future has in store.
For change agents everywhere, at every level of business, government or citizen engagement, Celine provides us with time tested fundamentals to unite efforts across the globe. The basis for a common language and shared understanding of what civilization stands for in an interconnected, interdependent networked world.
I can't think of anyone who shouldn't have the tour de force on the bedside table, it is that important.

Dare to READ THIS BOOK
Celine Schillinger has written a revolutionary book. Painstakingly researched, she fortifies her real world lived experience with expert sources. For me, and the change-makers she inspires, the explosive active ingredients in this book are the breakthrough initiatives Schillinger commandeered herself. For example, take a look at the initiative she launched to address the deadly Dengue disease with her employer’s new vaccine. (p.72) And measure her moxie against the results! See this book as a lodestar on how to replace entrenched, established, lackluster corporate performance with bold innovation powered by impassioned teams that achieve new heights. Vive la révolution!

Masterful, expansive, and multi-disciplinary
Dare to Un-Lead is a masterful, expansive, and multi-disciplinary look at how leadership has evolved - and where it is headed.
Celine’s deep research into the philosophical, historical, and sociological changes brings together concepts, real-world applications, challenges, and personal narratives to weave a thought-provoking guide to the future of leadership.

It’s rare that a non-fiction book about leadership riles me up. Not because I don’t engage with the subject matter but because I do - and I certainly did with Dare to Unlead.

Everything Celine write in this book has been experienced by many workers in organisations who do their best to effect change but who come across meaningless rules, traditional hierarchies and power plays and organisational culture.

This book shows you an alternative to that. It provides ways in which leaders can encourage the workplace to be a space that allows for “liberty, equality and fraternity that allows workers to have a voice and purpose in the work they do. It challenges the traditional models of leadership and shares possibilities of alternatives that can be considered.

A highly recommended read. Give it as a gift to your boss or CEO.

The book is a “Tour de Force”, a “labor of love”. The book is full of quotes and interpretations from 200+ leadership books. I can’t imagine how many hours, days, and weeks she spent curating the right quotes and organizing them into a system that makes sense. It is a strength and at the same time, the weakness of the book: the core message gets lost in the sheer volume of references. But the core messages and very important: they are about high-quality identity, high-quality information, and high-quality relationships. They are nicely organized around the 3 tenets of the French Republic: liberty, equality, and fraternity.

This s already one of my favorite books in 2022. Céline puts together her view on modern leadership and change management in a book based on her broad professional experience combined with broad research. She is able to bring theoretical approaches to live and I have learned so much.

Céline Schillinger’s Dare to Un-Lead thoughtfully challenges the traditional view of leadership. She does so by reminding the reader of the role bias plays in shaping who society favors as most deserving of leadership roles and positions of power. By following individuals who are overly confident and dominant, we ultimately end up being mismanaged by those same leaders who may not necessarily possess the qualities to lead effectively.

Schillinger makes the point that we must rethink our assumptions about leadership and break out of the systemic cycle that hinders true leaders from flourishing. Schillinger’s book highlights behaviors vital for genuine leadership such as ability to be vulnerable and actively listen, willingness to serve, and being intentional about seeking perspectives of those who are different or think differently.

Relevant to those of us working in the DEI space, Schillinger’s work diligently calls out areas in which even today’s most inclusive leaders may fall short—and that is to be selfless and committed to serving others rather than being driven by their personal agenda. This disconnect in turn keeps us from moving away from dysfunctional work environments and towards making significant progress on what Schillinger defines as liberty, equality, and fraternity in the workplace.

Dare to Un-Lead gives me hope that leaders who read this book will be inspired to reflect on their own shortcomings and strive to recognize and empower hidden talent that have historically been overlooked.
