The book was amazing. It continued the series wonderfully. The end was shocking, since death has never really been dealt with outright in the series. It was always something that could happen in the future, or had happened in the past. But Taryn dying in Cruz’s arms to save him from Rook was absolutely shocking, and incredibly sad. And the reveal that Cruz is immortal was incredibly surprising. Though I’m sure there will be a scientific explanation, that was shocking and a bit too fantastical for something published by National Geographic.

The perfect amount of peril, friendship, and race against time! This book is a real page turner with a lot of twists and turns. You will love it like the rest of the series.
In this book, Cruz and his friends are tracking down another clue that his mother left for him when she died. This time they are visiting the Seychelles, India and Bhutan, and the stakes have never been higher. The spies from the evil Nebula corporation are closing in, and Cruz begins to doubt is he can trust even his closest friends.
There are a lot of plots twists and major revelations in this book! Just when you think it's going to be another formula plot, finding the clues, solving the puzzle, and traveling around the world... Bam! Something insane happens and it throws everything into turmoil. The adventure is fantastic!
I just adore these characters! They each have some good development and I love their different personalities. It's so cool to see how they discover their strengths and weaknesses in this book and grow closer as a team. Cruz is such an amazing main character. He surprises me in every book!
One of my favorite side characters dies in this book. No spoilers, but I was crying my eyes out when this character died. It was such a beautiful death scene and really meaningful and tragic. I was ugly crying and whispering, "No! No. It can't be." to the book. I was very emotionally invested in this story. I also liked that after the death, the other characters grieved. They didn't just jump back into daily life. We see them stumbling and trying to find their way again. Nothing is the same. They are grieving and blaming themselves. There are emotional consequences. I love the depth of these characters! It's such good storytelling, and it really made an impact on me.
The exotic locations are amazing, and I loved learning about different conservation efforts in the national parks of the Seychelle islands. There is a lot of interesting information about turtle egg poaching and wildlife conservation. It's so interesting to see the true history and real facts about actual places interwoven with the story, especially about how the local government uses technology to stop poachers and protect the ecosystem.
I love learning about the history of the Taj Mahal and the Paro Taktsang Monastery. The historical sights are incredibly interesting, and I was so fascinated that I felt like I was visiting those places with Cruz and his friends. But all of the information is woven so seamlessly into the story that you never realize you are learning. It doesn't slow down the plot at all.
The fictional technology is really cool. This book introduces a tiny robot that can monitor sea turtle eggs in their nest and protect them by sending out an alert if a poacher or predator comes to steal the eggs. And of course, Cruz has his little honeybee robot, Mel, who saves the day on more than one occasion!
I really enjoyed the writing style, which has both some serious situations and some humor to keep things light. The pacing is excellent. The writing kept my attention and had me turning those pages.
The artwork is a cool mixture of illustrations overlaid on top of real photographs, and it adds a wonderful dimension and depth to the story. I loved seeing the characters brought to life in the artwork, as well as the beautiful locations they visit. It really makes a special addition to the story!

This is the part of the series where it is not just about the cipher any more, but any number of subplots and sidetracks that begin to come to a head. The most fast paced book yet, with Cruz going after two different cipher pieces and beginning to investigate the double mysteries of the spies on Orion and his unexpected destiny. With enemies closing in on every side, Cruz must journey on his most dangerous mission yet - and the completely unexpected revelation at the end left me reeling for more! (Warning: this book contains what I consider the saddest moment in the entire series).

Audiobook with my kids. This book had a lot of big moments: the romance between 2 main characters advanced with a kiss (age appropriate), there was a death of a main character that was close to our hearts, and a big discovery for Cruz. All of these plot points brought up good conversation for us and we’re looking forward to the next book!

I really like the ideas (new technology, etc.) in this series of books, and the plot is compelling enough to keep me and my 8 year-old son on the edge of our seats.
Jõudsin ära oodata selle ägeda sarja viienda maakeelde tõlgitud osa! Mõnikord küll kahetsen, et kohe järjest lugeda ei saa, kuid loo juurde minnes pole probleemi sinna taas siseneda. Seekordne noorte avastajate seiklus end India ookeani sisse seadnud teaduslaeval Orion edeneb tempokalt.
While so many other authors are spending time writing complete fiction (which is fine, don't get me wrong), I so so so appreciate those who combine actual science with fiction and Trudi Trueit has done just that in this series in Explorer Academy: The Tiger's Nest.
The Tiger's Nest deals with relationships with friends, having a crush, death, and trust. Of course, there's a lot of biology thrown in and it's written in a fascinating way. I appreciated the codes readers try to figure out in the book and the color illustrations are masterful. As opposed to book 4 of Explorer Academy, I appreciated that this book had a few more strong male characters, and they weren't all bad guys, either! As always, there is a whole slew of strong...
Read 2022: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (four stars cuz I was still shocked by the two giant plot twists at the end😅 like WHAT?!) Re-read Oct 2024: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (After re-reading the rest of the books and this one with the knowledge of both plot twists, this is definitely a five star, with a tragic and jaw dropping ending, but a five nonetheless💖🙃)
Wow, I forgot how intense this one was!!
Language: N/A. Just some uses of h*ck, d*ng, and g*sh.
Violence: Action. Death scne, not described at all.
Magic: N/A.
(Other: 12-13 year-olds kiss on the lips, not overly described)
Wow!!! After re-reading the rest of the books with the knowledge of the plot twist in this one...all the dots are connecting you guys! It makes so much sense now, how did I not see it coming?💖 like this was so planned from the start...mind blown🤯💖 when I first read it I was like no way this doesn’t even make sense, but now...whoa, whoa, whoa!!🤯🤯💖💖💖 This book is so intense! wow! The Taj Mahal part is really nerve-wracking! I forgot how intense that scene was, poor Cruzer!💖 This was so great, even better the second time around when the plot wtists didn't catch me off guard!💖🙃 The characters as always are just so great, tho I'm not a huge Lani fan, I did enjoy her roll in this book, she's a great friend to Cruz. And Emmett and Sailor🤭💖 these two are just too funny together, their bickering always cracks me up💖😂 And of course the egg scene is always hilarious and the jungle scene...lol!💖😂 This is such a good book! That ending tho, a tear-jerker then a fist to the gut, wow!💖😭 So can't wait to finally read the last two!!💖😃
Yes! Something that has been hinted at and nudged all around is finally, boldly stated, and I was right. Now whatever they will do with this information is beyond me. There is only so far you can go with this plotline logically, only so many directions. We are starting to see some revelations, also unwelcome events.
Moving on, the science and the locations are the stars here. No, let me take that back. The characters come across, for the most part, as real. They grow and change and develop throughout the series; too many children's series keeps the characters stuck where they are or the characters do not come across as real children. The locations and the science (which feels just out of reach, as if this will be real next year, or very soon!) make this series even better. I can easily recommend this to so many types of readers.
Looking forward to the next book. What will happen next?
My name is Lani, and the Explorers traveled to another section of Africa to help endangered wildlife. Our team was hoping to work with the sea turtles, so Emmett could test out his new invention. However, no one but me was excited to work with plants on the side of a mountain. Sure, cutting down trees and pulling out shrubs was hard work, but then we got to replace them with new trees to help the habitat and birds recover. Actually, we were lucky to survive when our teacher fell down the mountain, and we were forced to battle a violent tropical storm. Now back on the Orion, we've figured out the next clue in finding the formula hidden by Cruz's mom. Nebula is still trying to stop us, and they've already tried killing Cruz and kidnapping his father. Another Explorer is secretly telling Nebula our plans in the search, but I think I've figured out a way to discover his, or her, identity.
The continuing thread through all of the books is Cruz's quest to find all of the pieces to his deceased mother's formula that could change modern medicine forever. However, a ruthless chemical company called Nebula is doing all it can to stop him. Cruz has a close-knit group of friends, but the author keeps stringing along the mystery of a spy among the explorers. Consequently, I find myself suspecting everyone, including Cruz's friends. I anticipate it will be a startling reveal, but I hate that I can't trust any of the characters. Every book in the series finds the explorers traveling somewhere in the world to help protect the environment. It's a good way to learn about plants and animals, and it reveals the different ways mankind is harming them. The series introduces all kinds of impossible inventions that make this book science fiction. The most entertaining invention/character is Mell, a bee-like drone invented by Cruz. It accompanies Cruz everywhere and follows his orders, and it communicates with blinking lights in its eyes. Cruz treats it like a friend which helps generate feelings for the mechanical drone. Overall, I'm enjoying the series, although I feel like it's getting into a predictable pattern. The author is keeping my interest, so far, but I'm expecting a significant change. Cruz has found 3/4 of the puzzle, so the series needs to end soon.
In reviews for previous books of this series, I likened the Explorer Academy to Hogwarts. However, with this latest installment, we begin to see evidence that Mrs. Trueit is looking to National Treasure for inspiration.
Which is fine, since my boys like the National Treasure movies. And this book was written with them in mind, so...
Trudi writes compellingly; even with the National Treasure-like silliness, how Cruz and his friends respond to their missions is relatable. The plot moves along as steadily as the Orion, and within that plot, there are several mysteries to be solved, each of which has a good measure of clues pointing in the right direction and red herrings to cast doubt. Even with the foregone conclusion of Cruz' main mission being successful, there are plenty of surprises in store for the readers.
The neat thing about this series is that the story piques their interest, and they're able to make connections between what they already know and spark interest in some things they don't know. They get to tell me what they've learned about the Taj Majal, or Bhutan, or coral reefs. They ask: "is this real?" and we research something like the Seychelles together.
If you're making a list of books that will get your kids to read, put this series on the list.
Cruz and his friend Lanie, who is now an explorer, are attempting to solve the next clue. Once they do they will find their next adventure will take them to Namibia on the west coast of Africa to find the piece of his mom’s cypher. Also, a part of this exploration was to protect gorillas in the Biwindi Impenetrable Forest from harm. There, the explorers would observe and learn about them. But for Cruz, the threat of Nebula has infiltrated the group and it becomes very clear when Bryndis becomes ill from a poison that was meant for Cruz. Once again, there are mysteries to be solved and the need to find another piece of the cypher.
In book five of the series the tension is building and readers are going to be turning the pages hoping for the best outcome. More riddles, puzzles and technologies will continue to engage readers. Readers will learn about gorillas and their habitats. Parents and teachers can use this series as a tool to get reluctant readers wanting to pick up a book.
I have really enjoyed this series of books even though they are actually for young adults/teenagers. The books are very readable with good characters and a pretty good plot, though they can be a bit predictable. Trueit's research is imnpecable and each book has a section at the end which includes research and information about the technology, science, and equipment that is featured in the book. Some of it can seem a bit far fetched and then you read the short articles at the end and realize that it does actually exist. I have found those to be as interesting as the books and the story. In this one the story takes a deadly turn as his Cruz and his fellow explorers must go to India and the Himalayas to obtain the next pieces of the cipher. They also uncover more clues to the potential spies and to the ulitmate purpose of the cipher. Great series for younger readers.
D & I are always eager to read the next book in this series! This one did not disappoint. Such a great series! Cruz and his friends found the 6th cipher. This book was unique in that 2 people died - malcom room (a bad guy, nebula) and Taryn, the beloved advisor for the explorers. That was a shock. And at the end of the book, Cruz was allowed to enter a super secret underground storage facility where original masterpieces are stored, including Cruz’s mom’s book/journal. He was only allowed to read one page of it. In that page, he read that she believes the formula she was working on got to him and made him immortal. And he can’t tell anyone what he read. Can’t wait to read the next book!!

This series just keeps getting better and better (though, who lets 12-13 year old kids wander off by themselves? I mean, yes they're supposed to be the best and the brightest . . . but they're still KIDS! lol) as it goes along. This installment sees Cruz et al trying to solve more clues left by his mother, and also keep up with their EA schoolwork, including working on important conservation work in Seychelles. It also had plenty of suspense, with Nebula dogging their footsteps at almost every turn. Things are getting very 'fraught' very quickly, and I wonder if my poor ol' heart is up for the next 2 books!
I have never cried when listening to an audiobook before. This was so sad. There were two things I didn't like about the entire series, excepting the first book, which I read in print. #1: The narrator pronounced 'Michelangelo' 'MICK-e-lang-e-lo.' #2: I love the illustrations, but I listened to the audiobook, so I couldn't see them. Maybe I'll check them out from the library just so I can look at the pictures. READ THE WHOLE SERIES!
Wow, this book was an amazing read and yet it still had at the end of the book.. A CLIFFHANGER! They sure do love them hahahaha, but I am not complaining because I am loving this super adventurous and creative series! However, there is some "middle school romance" which was not needed in my opinion, but the story is still an amazing read!! And.. some of it is based off of National Geographic explorations! HOW COOL IS THAT?!
This really is such a fun series. The characters are so diverse and interesting, and I love “The Truth Behind the Fiction” at the end of each book. It introduces you to actual scientists working in the areas the kid explorers have experienced and explains how much of the futuristic tech isn’t as futuristic as we may think. Great characters. Great connections to real world people and crises. Highly recommend for middle grade readers, especially those interested in STEM and adventure.
This book is the best one so far!!! So much happens to EVERYONE involved with Cruz's mission to find his mom's Cipher.(and a few people who aren't involved) There are still so many mysteries that still haven't been solved. After this book I like Bryndis even more. Plus,I finally realized how great Taryn really is. I really enjoyed this book and I recommend this series to everyone.
Book 5 was another good one. My six year old son is loving these. Now he gets to learn about the torturous wait in reading unfinished series. :) I like the diversity and science these have. The characters are good and the plotting is suspenseful. This book contained more revelations as we near the pending conclusion.
