Mayet Justice #1

Sinful Justice

Rate this book
Murderer?
Vigilante?
Or seeker of justice?

The choice is yours.

I’m Minka Mayet, Copeland City’s newly appointed chief medical examiner.
My position demands I bring justice to those who can no longer fight, but my true calling is to honor the dead.
Though forced to play by the rules, I was gifted the knack for deciphering what the dead have to say, which keeps my success rate high and my unsolved cases nonexistent.

Archer Malone searches for justice too, but he comes with secrets deeper than the ocean, and an incessant need to claim me as his own.

We’re strangers. We’ve only just met.
But my first day on the job sees a particularly cruel case land on my desk that demands we work together.

Archer’s arrogant streak makes it impossible to remain objective when we’re within touching distance, but we need to work fast to find our killer, or the famed Copeland City vigilante may step in on our behalf.

Sinful Justice is the first book in a brand new standalone series by Emilia Finn. This book is intended for an 18+ audience and contains graphic scenes that may be disturbing to some readers.

What a great series!!!!

Minka was the chief medical examiner who moved to a new city and Archer the detective of the city’s police department.
I was very invested in this story, it was fast paced, main and secondary characters were fantastic, the plot was multilayered and I enjoyed how they solved the cases.

While there was no cliffhanger, it is an interconnected series.

On to the next asap!!! 📖🏃🏻‍♀️

Chief medical examiner Minka has moved to a new town. I think the author was trying to make her edgy or unique but she just came across as immature. She’s only 27, how did she become a medical examiner so quickly? Got her BA, then four years of med school, completed residency and was a practicing physician before applying for a CMO?

From her “dropping her pants to her ankles" to pee in a public restroom?? I can’t think of ONE woman that would allow her clean pants to even touch the bottom of a public bathroom floor. Gross

Then to the instant hook-up with the stranger from the airport on page 28 with FADE TO BLACK scenes??

Then she’s waking up the bar owner across the street every morning to make coffee in his bar like she even knows him? And she’s pissed off that he’s angry for her waking him? Who even is this woman? What nerve!!

All the men she encounters are extremely good looking.

To top it all off was the chatty co-worker with dyed hair and a quirky personality that is very reminiscent of NCIS. Their very first interaction is so unprofessional.

I managed to finish the book and the one-night-stand relationship ends up being somewhat hot. I don’t understand the choice to have their first encounter FTB, but it ended up ok at the end. Not sure I’ll continue the series.

Not that bad.

A new medical examiner arrived to a new city, with the aim of starting over, met this attractive man at the airport helping her and ended up working together in solving crimes.

Which btw, super descriptive sexual abuse of a ten year old girl on page. It's pretty traumatizing if you ask me.

Wow what a ripper of a start to a series. A mixture of mystery suspense and romance. I think I’m in for the entire 15 book series.

It's hard to believe that this novel was written and published in 2022. It features a romance between the medical examiner and a detective in a mid-sized city. The hero is an alpha male. The heroine is a smart, successful and assertive woman . That's why it was so hard for me to believe that she was accepting of his behavior. Not just dominant in the bedroom, he crosses the line in the workplace and other situations. While reference is made to harassment, it's in a joking, non-serious way. His initial behavior was just insulting- not protective or benevolent. Yuck!

So I missed something somewhere---this story was about one killer the vigilante. Somewhere we lost the main focused killer and jumped into a completely different story. I was told to read this as its likes Bones the TV series. No...no its not. There is nothing realistic about this book. The time lines jobs, murders, ages etc make no sense. Also we meet no one from her new team of medical examiners other than the very annoying NCIS copycat. So I thought maybe book 2, I read the synopsis and we are moving on to a new killer. Pass.

I'm Excited

It's been awhile since I enjoyed an Emilia Finn book. Loved her debut, The Rollin On Series, (six books in her debut series), and her second series, The Survivor Series but for me her writing fell off in The Checkmate Series and I stopped reading her work. That was until I read book one in The Justice Series and now I'm looking forward to seeing where this cast of new characters takes us.

I liked both mains, the support characters and I enjoyed the sleuthing involved trying to solve the murders. And I didn't pick who was committing the murders until the author's reveal. This had a Roarke and Eve Dallas feel to it so if you love JD Robb's In Death Series you will like Minka and Archer

Despite the grim topic this wasn't a hard book to read and I'll definitely be reading book two. The story flowed easily and had the right blend of storyline, character development and intrigue for me. It's a quick read but it sets up the story and cast of characters quickly. If you've never read an Emilia Finn book you can start with this series as there's no interconnecting characters but because I love the Rollers so much I'll always recommend that as a great place to begin your Emilia Finn reading journey.

Unexpected

I love Ms. Finn's books. I've read all of them and I always preorder all of them. I rarely even look at the previews or summaries. I was very surprised by Minka and Archer! This story had a depth that I was not expecting and I was very pleasantly surprised! The secondary characters were the kind that make you want to learn more about them. I really enjoyed this!

Or is Archer sort of r@pey?? Not my fave. And, is Minka the killer? Was sort of hoping to get a final answer on that.

There wasn’t a single likeable character in this entire mess. The ages of the characters were incredibly inconsistent with their positions and with the absolute lack of professionalism they display in every sense of their jobs, it makes me think that they’re just handing out titles to just anybody.

Minka is the most annoying lead I’ve read in a while. She meets Tim and immediately proceeds to ruin his life. Tim has done nothing to deserve this woman barging into his life every single morning at 7 am, bothering him, and then being shocked he’s not happy to see her. The entitlement was astounding.

Archer 100% had an air of abuse of power and he definitely feels like a character that would have assaulted a woman if she said no and I know this because Minka LITERALLY said no to going home with him and he responded with “I’m bigger and broader than her” and carried her to her apartment and refused to leave.

Charlie and Aubree were wildly annoying too. Charlie just kept bringing up Minka like it was some huge character development for Archer to be attached to her so much after a full day and not entirely obsessive and weird. Aubree was annoying through and through, while also being an attempt to copy Abbey from NCIS without any of the likability or skills.

I don’t know how this series has gone on for 15 books, but I struggled to make it to the 50% mark on the first one. I like to give a book a chance and this did not deserve it.

As per the blurb of this book, "Sinful Justice is the first book in a brand-new standalone series by Emilia Finn".
This is the first book I have read by Emilia Finn and this is an interesting plot for a series.
I was engaged with the characters and purchased the next book in the series. The main characters of Minka Mayet, the newly appointed chief medical examiner and Archer Malone a police detective have a complicated relationship with their own moral compass as they each want to get justice for the victims. I was invested in both the main and supporting characters as the author explores the theme of good people doing evil things for the right? reasons and the fine line between justice and vigilante. If the crime described in these books happened to your loved one, where would you draw the line, what would you be comfortable with in relation to the punishment of the perpetrator? A thought provoking read. At the time of writing this review, November 2022, there are 6 books in the series.

There are no cliffhangers per se and in each book the main crime is solved but the books in this series are interconnected and are meant to be read in order. Be aware these books are intended for 18+ readers and deal with adult themes and contain graphic scenes that may be a trigger for some readers.

Ok I loved this. This very much gave me Bones and Booth vibes.

The FMC was kind of obnoxious at the start but she got better. It was also a bit instalove on the MMCs part which I usually don’t like but it just worked for Minka and Archer. The whole medical examiner and detective solving crimes and falling in love thing just works so well and I’m here for it

I think I liked the premise of this book more than the execution of it. It was enjoyable enough and I will be continuing with book two to see what happens next. 🥵

spoilers below 👇

###

I like the grittier, darker details with the main ongoing plot of the murder investigation and vigilante (although I wish there was more of this throughout the book). I also enjoy the professions the main and side characters have (i.e., medical examiners and detectives). Yet, sometimes it also feels like these jobs are too convenient. Like how are they all so young and yet in jobs like that?

One thing that made this book hard to read sometimes was the over explanation of things happening that did nothing for the plot. I understand filler and this being a short book you’d need some filler, but it felt like everything was being described. For example, the FMC going to the bathroom or just the process of the character walking anywhere. I would have liked to have read more environment/setting description, and the plot addressed a bit more. Being a short book it could also have benefited from further character development.

Descriptions and unique characteristics about the characters also just seem very artificial. For example, I felt it very randomly dropped in that Minka has a blood disorder and that Archer is ex-mafia, oh and Tim is his brother. And Archer and Fletcher are best friends. Oh and now Aubree is quirky and cute, and smart and is going to be Minka’s best friend. Like it all seems described in ways that’s just brings up a detail to make something interesting not because it is who that character is and it adds this value to the book. Archer’s mafia past doesn’t make much sense to me other than to make him out like a bad boy, and again just adds no substance in fleshing out his character. I feel like all of the characters are somewhat unstable and unreliable in their narration. Like the main characters feeling one way and then whiplashing back the other way. I thought it did help to have two POVs that balanced some of this out though.

The relationships to Minka feel very forced too. It’s clearly written that she’s tried multiple times to set up boundaries with Archer, Aubree and Fletcher (name calling) and they all just ignore her but her internal monologue and speech very clearly state her feelings otherwise. These characters that are supposedly her new friends know no boundaries whatsoever which makes the relationships built (in the week of this entire book’s timeline) even more fake and plot driven rather than character driven. This is confusing and frustrating to read especially as Minka is made out to seem like a very individual, stubborn, strong-willed type but somehow keeps letting them do what they want to her?

Lastly, as much as I love the pairing of Minka and Archer I really just can’t get into this ‘Insta-lust/love’. They’re making internal declarations (external also by Archer about how much he cares for her) and it’s like, you guys have known each other for less than a week? And that’s the thing- this whole book is set within a week’s timeline so it felt more than a little unrealistic and rushed with the character relationships, investigation development, and overall ending which I also felt was quite predictable.

Again, I will continue with the next book but thats probably because these books are so short (again, a con in itself) and I kind of want to see if there is actually something genuine with Minka and Archers relationship that isn’t so shallow.

Emilia Finn knows how to introduce a series! This is the first time we have ventured so far out of roller town and the established universe of Emilia’s books and it could not be better. Like Minka, we are thrown into an established group of colleagues and friends in a busy city. It’s a nice touch that the reader and the female main character are both newcomers to this new town and learning everyone at the same time. In this book, the new cast of characters is introduced and the bar is set for what to expect. This series follows the medical examiners office and the police detectives solving crime around town. The only wrinkle is a vigilante is now making its mark and it sparks debate over whether vigilante Justice is acceptable. I’m this book Minka and Archer also begin to establish their relationship. It’s a wild ride with twists turns and murderers on the loose but the newest ME is a badass and the cops are pretty funny so definitely a must read!

DNF @ 75% and we’re still on like day 5 only. This is embarrassing

!!! LITERALLY DO NOT BOTHER WITH THIS IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR FMC ASSASSIN/SERIAL KILLER VIBES. I FEEL CHEATED AF BECAUSE IT ISN’T THERE IN ANY SIGNIFICANT WAY!!!! This is NOT comparable to the Mindf*ck series by ST Abby, which I highly recommend

- insta love for no reason
- fade to black steamy scenes which aren’t even steamy but just keep on reading rapey af.
- Every character is apparently model gorgeous even though they only make an appearance once.
- side characters and MMC have never heard of the word boundaries IN THEIR LIVES (and I’m really usually into alpha holes and semi forces friendships with chipper sidekicks in books)
- so far we’ve gotten at LEAST 3 full paragraphs describing FMC taking a pee. For no reason, literally none. There is NO value whatsoever in the extreme over writing of the most MUNDANE things.
- why is this so SLOW?! 40% in and we were only up to 3 days?! This book could’ve been and should’ve been at least 50% less. These editors really don’t have to do shit to earn their paycheck huh?

- MMC is not cute, Super rapey, misogynistic vibes, refuses to take no for an answer, feeling justified when FMCs body responds even though she says no in continuing what is essentially SA.
- MMC’s entire, really weird and completely unbelievable backstory being dropped in a diner after like 5 days of knowing each other without an actual reason for it makes no sense. None. And it’s LUDICROUS.
- MMC BREAKS DOWN THE DOOR, while FMC REPEATEDLY tells him not to come in, causing FMC to fuck up her medication and suffering the side effects from that afterwards, but the situation is then turned around on how the MMC feels?!
- oh yeah, he TELLS EVERYONE ABOUT IT because he’s “panicking”. Side character REPEATEDLY tells him not to disclose medical information but he does anyway AND THEN SHE DUCKING GOOGLES whatever he didn’t tell them because THAT’S apparently not a GROSS VIOLATION OF PRIVACY?!

- FMC is a cool, competent character but lets the three “friends” waltz all over her boundaries even though that’s EXTREMELY OUT OF CHARACTER.

Archer is a POS. Minka sucks too but Archer is top-tier jackass. He's not an enjoyable character to read.

Minka is supposed to be head smart, street smart, and independent. Yet she leaves her suitcase unattended in an airport bathroom where it gets stolen. She goes home with an obvious bad decision and is stunned when that bad decision shows up at her job and gives a live demonstration of how much he sucks.

A brief synopsis of the first 80-ish pages

Minka bumbs into Archer twice at the airport- he's a little dickish and cocky. She grabs a cab to her new place, which isn't ready. She needs food, and she finds Tim's bar right next door to her new place.

Minka complains to Tim the bartender about how much of a douchebag Archer is, and at that point, he was only a minor douch. Then Archer shows up, and he cranks up his asshole level. She ends up going home with him and sleeps with him??? Somehow, "I'm not a prude" was misconstrued with "asshole behavior is tolerable because your hot"

Next morning, she's trying to sneak out of Archer's bed. She gets caught by Archer and a new character named Fletcher, and they're both assholes to her. She leaves, and now she's pounding on Tim's door, as in the bar door at 730am. Tim, as in the guy she only met for a total of maybe 20 minutes. I'm not even sure why she thought Tim would be at a bar at 730am.

Tim answers, he's obviously cranky cause he's maybe only closed up 5 hours prior and now he's got a strange woman pounding at his bar door, and she practically invited herself in so she could use his coffee machine.

She waits in Tim's bar for 90 minutes until she can get into her apartment, then heads to her new job. Everything is coming up aces. Suddenly, Archer and Fletcher show up. And right in front of her subordinate, Archer starts with bragging about their one night stand and how he kept her panties.

And that's where I gave up.

she goes to her new apt and finds out the ceiling came down and she cant spend the night there. its cold and icy and she doesnt have a coat, it was in the suitcase that got stolen

she goes to the bar next door, shes starving. the bartender makes her dinner and the man from the airport shows up. she spends the night having sex with him and leaves the next morning. its too early to get in her apt and too cold to wait outside so she wakes up the bartender and makes coffee in the bar for herself. she had left her debit card with him overnight so she couldnt go anywhere else

it wasnt the dad who killed the daughter, the mom was killed too and evidence was planted. it was the mayor. he tried to kill them all to cover up but she stuck him with a scalpel, she knew just where to put it to kill him

i would read more of this series

major Bones Vibes

You guys!!!! I have loved reading Emilia’s book since I was first introduced about 2 years ago!! This book is in a different world from her previous books, but it is still so good!! If you liked the TV series Bones, you’ll love this book!!

Minka is moving to a new town to become the chief medical examiner. Upon her move, she keeps running into Archer, who pushes to the point we’re she break down and agrees to one night together. Fine and dandy until you find out he is one of the head detectives on your newest case in town. Talk about tension!

This book definitely had moments that made me bust out laughing. The connection and banter between Minka and Archer was amazing. I loved seeing them purposefully push each other’s buttons, then leads to something more steamy. I loved the vulnerability that both showed at times, especially when Archer forced his way into knowing and helping with her medical issues. These two were perfect for one another.

This is only Book 1 in the series and there more to go. We have an underlying mystery that will run the series, yet we has a mystery to unravel in this book as well. Let me tell you, many times I had goosebumps throughout the book and it kept me guessing the whole time. Please not the cases they work in this book are extremely sensitive and filled with triggers, but justice gets served in a wicked way.

Justice is not easy…

If you can’t figure out who the vigilante is, you are brain dead…

Ok, maybe that’s a little harsh, but unless these are serious red herrings, it’s pretty clear who it is. Finn has used some of those first person techniques that allow for a narrator being unreliable. Meaning, they don’t tell you everything. What they do tell you may or may not be accurate. Agatha Christie was famous for this, as she wrote the first murder mystery novel using this technique. And at the time, she was accused of not playing fair, which I found very funny since we’re talking about a mystery!

Regardless, the main female is Minka, and I don’t like her at all. Many of the reviews say the same. She’s obnoxious, plain and simple. The male lead, Archer, is obnoxious in a different way. He is constantly trying to intimidate her and push her into a relationship that she repeatedly says she doesn’t want.

I scrolled through the reviews for future books and lots will be happening, but I won’t be there for it. Well written but these characters are not for me.

KU read.

I love the kind of books where ml and fl solve crimes together or something along those lines, I've loved mindfuck series and huntress moon series, found this book and was pretty excited for it.
Turns out throughout the book, I couldn't connect to even a single character (except for Tim maybe). Protagonists seem unlikable, fletch was ok but Aubrey was super annoying. I don't really like insta love so that was a bit of a turn off. Their chemistry felt forced THROUGHOUT THE BOOK. However what pissed me off the most was his behaviour towards her, so pesky, so annoying, borderline harassment. She says to him not to harass her and he's touching her the next moment!!! Like wtf. She literally repeatedly tells him not to barge in her house and he does exactly that, like where's the respect, where's the privacy bro
And what's with all this'I claim her'
Even the mystery part was mediocre, I totally guessed who the perp was.
Nonetheless finished 2nd book and gonna continue this series in hopes that it becomes better

Plot: 3 star, lackluster
Spice: 2 star, I literally can't even remember these scenes, but I remember they were there.
Overall all: 2 star. Just didn't do it for me.

Honestly, the FMC just comes across as a b*tch - I can see where the author is trying to make her a strong, independent woman, with walls, a mind of her own, and clear boundaries. But she's just rude to be rude, unprofessional as a boss (lead Medical Examiner), and unlikable. Supporting female character is the epitome of a boundary-scrossing lawsuit in waiting. Not a fan of her at all. She's not plucky, adorable, spunky, whatever. Honest to goodness her behavior would bring a rational person to violence. Story majorly skimps on plot line (this is meant to be a murder mystery + spice) with plenty of unanswered questions, an obvious villain from the get-go, and overall bland. Lacking in both the thriller and spice categories. Massive plot jumps, weird "flirting" that leads to the fun bits (which were very vanilla). Wasn't totally awful, just didn't do it for me. I'll try book 2 to see if there's an improvement. But first impression now that I've completed the book is that it's just "eh." The book is really short for the plot theme, so it feels rushed (instead of face-paced). With this first book, I can't see dedicating myself to reading all dozen+ books in the series. I'll definitely try the second book in case this first one just doesn't
was a miss for me. But initially? Nope. Didn't connect. Not funny. Not steamy, lackluster plot.

This book has been shot to the top of my list very quickly!

The plot - This is an enemies to lovers, workplace, grumpy X grumpier, forced proximity romance around a Forensic Pathologist and a Homicide Detective. Smut was like 2/5 on the spice scale. Oh yeah, SUPER dark shit inside so CHECK YA FUCKIN TRIGGERS PEOPLE. It’s a cliffhanger for the full series and lowkey a happy ever after? You could leave it here if you wanted, I mean.
I really loved the layout of this book! The action, the mystery aspect, the in depth characters and plot line… all added up to a super intriguing concept that had me hooked!

The MC - Minka is our secretive grumpy FMC who works as a forensic pathologist. Not only does her job sounds SUPER cool, but her personality was very much like mine so I’m in love with her.

The male counterpart - Archer is the grumpy to Minka’s grumpy, and he had a dry sense of humour that I loved. One of my new favourite MMC’s!

I'm very impressed that a woman being 27/28 years old is the CME. How did she find time to do anything in her life?
The author would like us to believe that the FMC was pre-med, got her medical degree and completed all of her residencies, worked for enough time to emasse an impressive CV to be a published and well respected authority in her field but still young enough to date and have a FWB relationship with someone? No, not buying it.

The MMC is another problem. He apparently doesn't believe in respecting boundaries, listening to the word no, or talking to anyone with respect. He manhandles the FMC ALL the time. FMC allows herself to be disrespected every encounter.

FMC is a pushover, allows her staff to treat her unprofessionally and doesn't do anything to get to know anyone.

The book takes place over 3-4 working days.

As another reviewer mentioned, the "second in command" is a bit too NCIS for my taste.

BETTER THAN EXPECTED!! but I knew it would be anyway!

I didn’t know what to expect but knew it would be amazing and this surpasses anything I thought it would! WOW! Honestly the story of Minka and Archer.. the way he just fell into her life from moments to becoming not only a powerful team but a power couple! Seriously another great read from Emilia.. will she ever fail? NEVER.. I don’t think I’ve ever read so many books in one go from a single author but Emilia’s writing is so captivating there is no chance of stopping.. this was amazing! The attention to detail was something else I assure you, murder, mystery and a shocking twist with a hint of romance.. well more than a hint.. it was OUTSTANDING ! Cannot wait to continue with the rest of the series!!
